People Back Driver Who Refused To Let Plus-Size Woman In His Car As She Sues Lyft: “Common Sense”
A Michigan woman called for a Lyft ride but instead got a blatant rejection over her weight.
Dajua Blanding, with a stage persona known as Dank Demoss, shared the moment where a driver told her she was too big to fit in his Mercedes-Benz and his “tires were not capable.”
Her video quickly led to online controversy, with people either taking the driver’s or the woman’s side.
- Dajua Blanding, known as rapper Dank Demoss, shared a video of a Lyft driver denying her a ride.
- “I can fit in this car,” she said in a viral video shared on social media.
- “Believe me, you can’t,” responded the driver. “ … I’m sorry. I’m going to cancel.”
- Lyft acknowledged the incident and said they are “disheartened” by the “driver’s unacceptable behavior.”

“It hurt my feelings,” said the rapper, who revealed she weighs nearly 489 lbs.
As Demoss spoke about the incident, she revealed that she requested the ride to go to her cousin’s house to watch the Lions playoff game.
When the driver showed up, he allegedly took a look at her and immediately locked the doors, denying her entry into his Mercedes-Benz sedan.
“I can fit in this car,” Demoss was heard saying in a video she posted on January 19.

“Believe me, you can’t,” responded the driver. “ … I’m sorry. I’m going to cancel. You’re not going to be charged.”
The rapper said she could fit in his car and has had no problem riding in vehicles of a similar size.
However, the driver insisted that his car was too small and “his tires were not capable,” she told TMZ.

“I’ve been in this situation before,” the driver said in the video.
“So every big person, you turn down because they can’t fit in your car?” asked the rap artist, who calls herself “PAID PHAT QUEEN” in her Instagram bio.
After apologizing, the driver suggested she order herself a larger vehicle, like an Uber XL, to get around.
“I just feel like y’all treat big pple like shyt [sic] like we don’t belong here,” Demoss said

“AM I WRONG ? @lyft what yall got to say about this yall driver discriminated against me,” Demoss wrote in the caption as she shared her video.
“I JUST FEEL LIKE YALL TREAT BIG PPLE LIKE SHYT [sic] LIKE WE DONT BELONG HERE,” she added.
Her video sparked mixed views online, with one saying: “Most drivers, would’ve canceled the ride and left her standing out there. At least he was honest even though she’s in denial.”

“Yall love to throw out the word sue……. This man is protecting his car. If I was her driver I probably would’ve said the same thing,” one said.
“Love her to death but he has the right to protect his only means of transportation i had a friend her size and she messed up a another friends car it said but at least he wasnt rude,” read a third comment.

“We gotta start being honest man. This is why shame is needed in society,” another social media user said.
Others were Team Demoss, with one saying: “He needs too [sic] lose his job.”
“He messed up when he said to order a xl and when he said his tires were too tired,” commented another. “I’m disappointed in @lyft.”
The plus-size artist’s story sparked mixed opinions online, with some supporting her while others sided with the driver

Lyft responded to the Detroit rapper in the comments section and said they were “disheartened” by the incident.
“We’re disheartened to look at this driver’s unacceptable behavior,” the rideshare company said. “Please DM us at your earliest convenience for additional support. We’d like to address this as soon as possible.”
Following the incident, Demoss took action to file a lawsuit against Lyft.
“I knew that it was illegal, and I knew that it was wrong,” attorney Jonathan Marko said

“I’ve been in cars smaller than that. I just want them to know that it hurt my feelings,” she told FOX 2.
Her attorneys Jonathan Marko and Zach Runyan defended the client.
“I knew that it was illegal, and I knew that it was wrong,” Marko told the outlet.

The disappointed Lyft customer thanked her lawyers Jonathan Marko and Zach Runyan in helping her take legal action against the rideshare company.
“Thank you to my lawyers Marko and Zach Runyan. Fighting for my community my people and making change to the world, not just for me but everyone,” she wrote on Instagram.
“Thank you to my team and all the support I’m getting,” she added.
Demoss’s video of being rejected by the Lyft driver garnered more than 575K views on Instagram

Lyft released a statement following the incident, saying it “condemns all forms of discrimination.”
“Lyft unequivocally condemns all forms of discrimination—we believe in a community where everyone is treated with equal respect and mutual kindness,” the company said.
“Our community guidelines and terms of service explicitly prohibit harassment or discrimination.”

The state of Michigan characterizes discrimination based on weight as “unlawful.”
The Michigan Department of Civil Rights has revealed on its website that they have the “authority” to “accept complaints based on unlawful consideration of religion, race, color, national origin, arrest record, genetic information, sex, age, height, weight, marital status and disability.”
The incident triggered a flood of conversations online about who was in the wrong
Poll Question
Who do you think was in the wrong in this Lyft incident?
The driver
Dajua Blanding
Both
Neither
As a fat person I'm getting tired of other fat people being so f*****g entitled.
I feel the same. I wish people would stop being proud of being so unhealthy. I'm fat for all the usual reasons, I don't expect the world to adapt to my bad life choices.
Load More Replies...Well as I counted she is cca 3 healthy people combined…. 222 kgs?! And just to let you inform, if a 100 kg man sits alone in your backseat (not in those giant cars like in the US, but this kind of smaller sedans) u definetly feel the back of the car goes down not a little, then here is an obese woman, with 222 kgs! Alone! This is the same entitlement when the other obese woman wanted free sits on plane because she couldn’t fit one.
She's already 3 - 4 of the persons allowed in a lift (Not meant as insult, just doing the math)
If she was to big for a seatbelt he was totally in his rights to deny. No idea if the car was to small for the weight, but his car, he decides if something is not safe.
That’s an excellent point, thank you. I was thinking that a driver would not have turned down two 245-lb passengers, but this makes perfect sense. He did not handle it well, but it should have been a safety issue, not a safety of my car/tires issue.
Load More Replies...Imagine the driver showing up and you want him to haul a 500lb package. It’s a matter of weight distribution. (And the fact she’s a walking heart attack; I don’t want anyone dying in my car.) I don’t blame him, and what’s she suing Lyft for? What do they hafta do with the price of rice in China? She’s completely unreasonable expecting everyone to accommodate her.
He handled it perfectly and respectfully. SHE is the one griping about his unwillingness to accommodate her morbidly obese body.
Local DMV had a driving inspector who was very overweight. Some older cars had seatbelts that wouldn't fit her. (Happened to a friend)
The state bans discrimination not rational thought. Amusement parks now have scales near some rides, and if you're too heavy for the ride, you can't go on it.Try suing for that? There is no difference here.
I hate to be that person but your comment is the closest to being a little calm and rational and not angry on one side or the other. No state or country that I am aware of bans discrimination outright. They ban discrimination based on very specific things. Ie race, gender, old age, religion, ethnicity, etc.... not a lawyer but to my knowledge this one will hinge on whether she can successfully argue that obesity is a disability and therefore a protected class owed a duty of accommodation. I imagine Lyft will use the case history in the aviation world and argue that they can accommodate but that doing so has additional costs due to the constraints of their system. You have to buy a second ticket, sit in first class etc. I imagine that if making a heavy person buy 2 seats and then not guaranteeing that they are together is not discrimination against obese folk that saying you just use a bigger car won't be either. Again not a lawyer, but someone who fights against his own weight issues
So this obese rapper that no one has ever heard of is getting a ton of free publicity from this bogus lawsuit that two lawyers with dollar signs in their eyes and that want to get their name out there are pushing. She needs to lose weight, that is not healthy and she knows that she can't fit in most vehicles without causing damage to the vehicle. Also since she wouldn't be able to wear a seatbelt he would be right for denying her a ride for safety and liability reasons.
She probably paid bored panda to post this. They have taken money for trashier posts than this.
She is 3 people in 1 body. The XL Uber is for that many people. She's not a standard 1 sized person. She's not 1 person in that body... she's 3 standard sized people. She's nearly 500lbs. That's 3 - 165lb women (and that's still considered overweight for a woman at 165lbs.) He was absolutely in the right to fear for his own "personal property." I don't think insurance covers that. A standard Uber says 1 to 2 people if that... she's again... 3 over weight women in 1 body. Take that to court!
Hang on a tick... 165lbs is not overweight for all women. For anyone over 5'9 that's actually healthy. A little less judgment please.
Load More Replies...Jesus f*****g Christ! A "plus-size woman". Call it what it is: an obese woman!
The driver is the only one who can judge whether a person can access his car. Also, there is the issue of seat belts: if the man has not installed an extension, in the event of an accident the person transported could have serious consequences and take action against him. He did the right thing. I can't stand hearing people get offended for trivial reasons, clogging up social media with b******t.
How is weighing this much (unless it's due to a medical condition) defended and viewed as a good thing? She's aggressively unhealthy. How hasn't a doctor told her to loose weight asap?
Typical victim mentality. The truth hurts so naturally, they have to sue. Saying it's against the law to call people fat is utterly ridiculous. If you're offended by something, there's truth in it. Period. I wouldn't let her into my challenger.
I’m overweight at 5’8” 235 lbs and I wouldn’t allow her to ride in my Acura RDX SUV!
Load More Replies...Calling her fat is offensive. Calling her "metabolically challenged" on the other hand....
How is this discrimination? This is getting out of hand. And with almost 500lbs you're way over the term "plus-sized"
She needs to seriously lose weight. All of this body positive s**t has gotten out of control. What is he going to do if she is forced to buy more than one seat on a plane? Sue them too?
If I have extra luggage I ask for a van and can guarantee I don’t travel with 500 pounds of luggage. She should specify she needs a van. Realistically she is 1 and half to 2 sumo wrestlers and they all travel in very large sedans or vans.
I can almost see the massive money signs imprinted on the Lawyer's faces, as they comfort their client. That poor driver. Could he have said it a bit better? Maybe, but it probably still would have offended her. So, Lyft (We don't have it here; assuming it's similar to Uber?) also have XL vehicles?
He wasn't driving a company car. That was HIS personal vehicle and ride shares don't cover repair bills, there is absolutely ZERO chance that woman could have fastened a seatbelt, which would be a legal and insurance nightmare for the driver and owner of the vehicle were they to be in an accident. She is 4'11''...healthy weight for that height is 94-123lbs....so she is actually 4-5 people in one body...she allowed that to happen, and now expects the rest of the world to make allowances, and take undue responsibility for her choices. Plan accordingly, stop pretending reality is discrimination.
I'm classified obese and I am getting my weight down. I am so sick of fat people (And I look skinny next to this person) being proud and beautiful about their weight. It's unhealthy, it unsafe and no you don't look great. Own up to it and lose weight!!! And as a sideline, there is no way she would have fit in that car.
I'm sorry but I wouldn't even let her on my couch let alone in my vehicle. Cars are too expensive and if she throws off the weight of the car it could be a legitimate wreck threat increase
I had 2 different chairs broken by 2 different morbidly obese women. Obesity of this severity is a legitimate issue for cars and furniture and planes.
Well, new struts for most cars run $200 a piece, not counting installation.
IMO, fundamentally this is the driver's decision. It's their car, their insurance, their responsibility to themselves and their customers. They can accept or refuse service to anyone for any reason - 'I don't like your stupid face' or 'Only people entirely dressed in purple' are as valid as concern over weight. They can choose to take passengers that others refuse because they think it would be a bad idea. As a result they may get offended customers, or indeed no customers but that is a decision they have to make for themselves. If they were driving as employees of a company, with set guidelines for what they must or must not do, and the driver broke them, then a lawsuit would be justified.
I converted her weight into kgs. Damn girl. So you choose to get THAT heavy and then you complain that others won’t ruin their property because of you? The audacity!
I converted it to baby elephants - she weighs same / more than TWO BABY ELEPHANTS!
As a fellow fat person, fat discrimination isn’t a thing nor is it illegal. Someone is allowed to deny you service because of your size. Stop being entitled.
Change the entire world to accommodate you? Nah, how about change your eating habits & your lifestyle.
Total weight capacity for a car that size is around 800 lbs. That's the total weight of all passengers cargo ect. She's over half that by herself and the car is designed to have that weight distributed. Sorry I'd be worried to. Especially if my shocks were a little worn or my tires were due for change. You about to put .625 of the total capacity over one tire of shock. I have nothing against large people but this is questionable.
Most sedans and compact car mandate in the manufacturer's specs a maximum combined weight of occupants and cargo in the 385 kg-410 kg range (850-900 lbs), spread over the four seats. This morbidly obese passenger (she passed "plus" long long ago) would exceed the average weight rating of a seat by a factor of two. It would not be safe for her, and it would likely damage the car to have her as a passenger.
So if her excess weight destroyed his car she was totally going to pay for repairs or a new car, right?
The female leads in Wicked are criticized for being too thin, and no one is offended that they are called too thin or anorexic. If it is permissible to criticize someone for being too underweight, it must also be permissible to criticize someone for being overweight. And Dajua Blanding is fat, very fat. Weighing over 220 kg is just an awful lot, regardless of body structure.
If she gave him a $1000 deposit before she got in to cover the replacement of his shocks, that might be OK, Otherwise, leave this poor driver alone who is working hard in HIS OWN CAR to try to make ends meet in a very challenging way
That lawyer is why lawyers have a bad rep. It's like he's a shark + smelled blood in the water. smh I hope the Driver contacts Mercedes + they can send him something that shows the weight limit of passengers in the back seat.
Yep. It's that one lawyers fault that the other hundreds of thousands of lawyers on Earth are being made to look bad for being money hungry. It's this one lawyer's fault. 🙄
Is it physically possible for her to fasten the seatbelt? That should be the criteria, and by the looks of it seems difficult. But what do I know
We need to stop using the term "plus sized" when we are referring to someone with morbid obesity, I'm plus sized you know an XL plus size, that woman is some size us regular folk don't even know about it's insulting to put everyone overweight in the same category as someone as out of shape and dangerously unhealthy as this lady.
Not everything is a law-suit. Cars have different tyre pressure requirements for different load weights, if the driver was unsure as to whether his tyres were adequately inflated he was absolutely correct in denying her a ride.
I really think car seats have a weight limit of some kind for safety and did the seatbelt fit ? absolutely not to blame. Her feelings were hurt. Time for some reality lady, you are just to big for a lot of things. I'm not disrespective !
please America, start using the right names. OBESE and not "plus size".
Seriously? BP is a Lithuanian website using that terminology. But, sure, it's the US' fault Lithuania used the wrong word on their own website. How stupid of me.
Load More Replies...I am not complaining about BP but the woke and fake inclusive american word usage
Or the baby elephant scale: she weighs as much as TWO BABY ELEPHANTS!
There is fat, then there is morbidly obese....emphasis on morbidly.
Not in my suv, no way. Anyone notice she said it was Mercedes suv. It was a small Toyota
Are her lawyers fake? How is it illegal to not allow someone in your car. He didn't charge her and there are other more comfortable options, I am just at a loss
I can't understand how a person gets to this size. I'm trying to lose 5kg and its difficult, but being obese like woman puts things in perspective for me. The driver was thinking practically, and it's unlikely she would have been able fit in the car comfortably.
It’s a disease. But that doesn’t give you the right to break people’s furniture and vehicles.
She is so wrong. I hope she loses this lawsuit. If Lyft settles I hope there is a backlash against Lyft for catering to "feelings" and they suffer in profits to the point where they must make a public apology to the driver for calling his behavior unacceptable in order to save face with customers.
Most Uber/Lyft drivers use a Toyota Prius, she ain’t fitting her fat așs in a Prius.
To be fair, safety should always be the number one thought of both passenger and vehicle driver/provider. The driver's initial concerns as told here may not have been presented in the best way and the potential passenger may have taken it as a real insult versus the driver's concern for his vehicle and her safety. And based upon many commenters here, this young lady appears to have had options of which vehicles are available to her based upon her current physical status. The two parties and the transportation company now must realize that this is definitely a learning lesson to move forward on. The passenger must know that she has special physical requirements for her transportation, the driver has to understand how to explain his concerns in cases like this, and the company needs to utilize this moment to add another safety/diplomacy page to their hiring program information handouts. Image this issue with an elevator in a building with a 6 person limit sign.
For perspective she weighs as much as TWO BABY ELEPHANTS! Would she have reimbursed the driver if she broke the suspension or the seat - I think not! “ On average, a newborn elephant weighs between 200-300 pounds”
I worked for a group of cardiologists…you’d be surprised at how many patients walked out because our doctors addressed their morbid obesity. It’s not fun to hear but it means your weight WILL contribute to your death if you do not take steps to correct it. This young lady is definitely morbidly obese.
She is at an unhealthy weight. If the driver told her she can’t fit in the car if it’s for a good reason
I think ride share drivers should pick and choose which fares they wish to take. I got assigned a driver on Uber that dropped me when I messaged him to pull in the driveway for pick up. Replied NOPE. Ok. Next assigned driver was fine with driveway pickup. It's their car. I'm entitled to nothing but a safe journey.
When your butt decides it would get more attention if it's in front of you...
He's an independent contractor for all intents and purposes. He has the right to refuse service to whomever he wants, and he certainly had a reason to. If he was worried about potential damage to his vehicle, then heck yes he had every right to refuse service. It'd be different if he said he didn't want her in his car because he didn't like overweight people, but what he did was essentially the same as refusing to give a ride to someone covered in grease... he was worried about his vehicle.
it's about safety, not discrimination! I mean, would she want to force herself into the car then have it break down somewhere, or get stuck in the car? Would she try to sue him for that too? FFS this is getting ridiculous!! Yes, she was probably embarrassed, but at almost 500 lbs this isn't the first and won't be the last time she won't be able to be accommodated in or on something. unfortunate, but not the driver's fault by far, he didn't force her to be that heavy. She is TA, not the driver. (and not because she's fat, but because she's making her weight everyone else's problem and not taking any responsibility for it!)
Size is a burden. Up to a point, it's mostly just a burden on you. But past that point, it's a burden on everyone. Don't burden others and then expect to be treated special. Attention seeking is not the answer.
Years ago I was over 420 lbs myself and decided to do something about it. I understand not everyone can, but you need to take responsibility for yourself. Everyone looks for a way to sue others and this is just another money-grabbing thing. I hope the lawyers get sanctioned for being ambulance chasers.
Three questions I didn't see here: How much does she weigh? What is the safe recommended load capacity of his vehicle? What is the safe recommended load capacity of his tires?
"Ppl are backing her" 😆😆😆 the poll on your own article says 85% her fault 😆😆😆
So if someone with no hands wants to be a heart surgeon and told no, is that discrimination too? No.
Who would be responsible for paying if her weight damaged the car seat?
My father in law was her size for the last 10 years if his life and he ruined the seat in 3 cars during that time with just his weight crushing the seat padding. In a BMW we had to replace the entire seat before selling it on Craigslist.
In all fairness if you look in your cars doorframe many do list a weight capacity for passengers, mine is slightly under 1000 lbs for a four passenger car, and it is assumed the weight is spread out. So the driver had a legitimate concern. And just like elevators have a total weight capacity if she tried getting in one that she would make it exceed that due to others in there already she has to accept she'll have to wait for the next elevator car. Same principle.
Theres photos of her sitting in a massive SUV and even then she is pressed right up against the steering wheel, and a video of her performing from the trunk of a truck that she takes up completely. I actually have negative sympathy for her. Bring back shame and bullying.
My father is 5'8 240lbs - not nearly as large as this woman but his belly makes it really difficult for him to get in to a coupe that is low to the ground, and it makes buckling up super difficult for him. He struggled to get it around his body, then struggles to latch it underneath him. Seatbelt extenders are specifically made to support larger people like this woman. Even if she got in to the car, I don't see how she would have been able to buckle up for safety.
I'll bet her body weight combined with the drivers would be in excess of the safe capacity of the vehicle so the only thing to do would be to refuse the ride. Common sense.
The driver's mistake was to get into an argument with her. He didn't have to give an explanation. Once he saw her and made up his mind not to drive her, all he had to do is cancel, the ride, select a reason for canceling like "accepted ride by accident," and kept it moving. As for the rapper, she's just trying to get paid by a large company. I have no respect for her because of her entitlement, someone lost a form of income.
If someone’s weight/size is an issue for some cars, there needs to be a clearly stated policy for Lyft the way there is for riding horses, amusement park rides, etc. For example, the policy could be “the seatbelt must fit all passengers, and the car’s weight capacity could be listed when you reserve the car the same way their passenger capacity would be listed. It doesn’t seem ideal for individual drivers to be left to figure out their own strategy case by case.
I know this is polemic, but I'll write it anyway. Things like that is one of the reasons a certain Orange Man is POTUS in a certain northern country.
Why do people think it's okay to tell someone they are too thin, but you can't say they are too fat...lawsuit!
Well, you'd be wrong. Weight limits in cars are assumed to be balanced. You put all the weight on one corner and you're looking for a new suspension once you hit the first pothole.
