Plus-size travel influencer Jae’lynn Chaney slammed Seattle–Tacoma International Airport for discrimination after an employee allegedly forced her out of her wheelchair and made her walk down the airplane’s aisle all the way to her seat.

Taking to her TikTok page last Tuesday (May 14), Jae’lynn posted a video of herself boarding an airplane in Seattle, Washington, USA.

Highlights
  • A plus-size traveler was forced to walk to her seat, claiming discrimination by Seattle–Tacoma International Airport.
  • Influencer Jae'lynn Chaney criticized airport staff for not providing wheelchair assistance due to her size.
  • Jae'lynn recounted her physical strain and near fainting after being denied a wheelchair, sparking a call for sensitivity training.

The 27-year-old explained that she had requested wheelchair assistance, an initiative she claimed to always do as a result of her physical condition as a “plus-size wheelchair user.”

When the time came for Jae’lynn to board her plane, she claimed the employee meant to assist her with her wheelchair walked away from her after noticing she wouldn’t be assisting “the smaller passengers.”

The TikToker recalled: “She started to walk away with the wheelchair while making comments about my size.

“Even when I told her I really needed the chair and needed her to let me sit down in it, she blatantly ignored me and kept walking.”

Jae’lynn said she was subsequently forced to “walk up one of the longest jet bridges [she’s] encountered” and that by the time she had been allowed to reach her wheelchair and sit down, her lips had turned white as her “oxygen levels had dropped.”

She added: “I almost fainted, this was my first time flying without oxygen.

“This woman just assumed I could walk and would rather me do that instead of her having to push someone my size up the jet bridge.

“All the other attendants wheeled their passengers up the jet bridge, but my needs were disregarded.”

“This is discrimination, nobody should be treated this way.”

Jae’lynn said these types of incidents were examples of why airports needed “employee sensitivity training,” which was a demand that had been outlined in a plus-size travel petition the influencer started last year.

The petition, which has amassed 39,039 signatures of its 50,000 target, recounted Jae’lynn’s experience traveling with her fiancé, Ard, who is also plus-sized, and the discrimination they have been subjected to.

During a flight from Pasco, Washington, to Denver, Colorado, Ard was subjected to hateful comments, disapproving looks, and refusals to sit next to him, the petition stated.

She alleged an employee forced her to walk to her seat instead of providing wheelchair assistance

“Similarly, on another flight, I was forced to occupy only one seat with immovable armrests that caused me pain and bruises,” Jae’lynn wrote.

The influencer’s petition demands that The Federal Aviation Administration require all airlines to have a comprehensive policy for accommodating customers of size.

This includes providing additional seats, offering refunds for extra seats purchased, clear communication of policies, airport assistance, priority boarding, larger lavatories, seat belt extenders, and specific sections for larger seats on new aircraft.

It also calls for mandatory employee training on respectful treatment and the inclusion of wheelchair-accessible lavatories on new planes.

Additionally, the petition demands that the Transportation Security Administration should implement guidelines and training for respectful screenings of customers-of-size.

Jae’lynn’s video, which accumulated 87,200 views, divided viewers, as a TikTok user commented: “Could be the person wasn’t physically able to push her.

“I am certain that wasn’t in the job description.

“Level surface or downhill I could do it but I don’t know if it be [sic] able to up an incline.”

A person wrote: “You’re able to walk, just stop and take breaks along the way.

“Walking is better for you.”

“I almost fainted, this was my first time flying without oxygen,” Jae’lynn said

Someone else penned: “Are you able to have a nurse assist you?

“Maybe the lady wasn’t physically able to push you.”

An observer suggested: “Get up and walk girly if you do it more as long as taking breaks you’ll get used to it.”

A viewer sympathized: “Sending positivity!

“No one should be discriminated against for their body or abilities”

An additional user argued: “I feel like a less selfish way of looking at this would be to get mad the airport didn’t have 2 people available to push you for employee safety reasons…one person shouldn’t be forced to risk injury.”

A commenter added: “If you think walking your own body up a jet bridge is hard imagine having to PUSH someone up it, especially as a smaller woman.”

A person asked: “Why should someone injure themselves for you? Obesity is a choice”

A separate individual chimed in: “I have health issues myself which has deterred me from flying, going to sports events, etc. but I’ve never blamed anyone for it.

“Most of these accessibility services are complimentary, not mandatory.”

She makes money out of her condition (yes, that’s a medical condition, indiscriminated body positivity is crazy), so she NEEDS these things to happen to her. Guys, she’s enjoying this moment and cannot wait to post the story everywhere! She’s supposed to be suffering from walking 50 meters, and having low oxygen levels (lol, that’s not how saturation works) and yet she’s putting all her focus on filming herself.. That’s a scam!

This is a story where the worker can't win; they push the wheelchair of someone very heavy and put their back out or some other injury and then they can't work to feed their family, or they don't help and get called fat-phobic etc and it's all over the news media and social media. 🙃 Yay minimum wage work

I know that I would not have been capable of pushing her in a wheelchair, so I don't blame the airline employee. If someone of this size is incapable of walking the short distance to get to their seat on the plane, they need to plan ahead and have a caregiver with them, carry oxygen, etc. But I've seen posts like this from her before, and I believe this is how she gets views.

I was under the impression that they offer reasonable accommodation. What this woman is expecting is not reasonable, if she has health concerns she needs to travel with a nurse or a caretaker. She should spend some time with a doctor trying to lose weight instead of bitching on the internet about her obesity causing her problems. And don't tell me it's a glandular problem.

But if services are offered, it's at the point of booking, they can't decide that they didn't mean it on the day. Airports have motorized transport and you can get two people if you need to. But when services are offered, they check the weight and ask if you need extra seats, I need assistance, this is asked. So the airline knew, offered help, and then didn't give it. That's illegal.

Medical condition? Then better fly only if it is a necessity. You don't want to get into medical trouble up there. Still, dealing with the special requirements to accomodate your body during non-emergeny travelling is your or your family's responsibility. You need two seats in coach on a plane for fun travelling? You pay for two seats. Why should others pay for you? Not a medical condition? Get advice on how to live healthy. What caused this overweight?

I have breathing issues, but I'm ok to fly as long as I don't exert myself. I carry oxygen in case I need it, but essentially, the advice is just stay seated. I don't think this should mean I shouldn't be able to travel for pleasure or see friends and family.

Fat phobia needs to stop being a thing. And I don't mean, "People need to stop being fat phobic" but rather "people who care about themselves so little that they weigh more than a small horse should stop seeing everything as discrimination". You cannot help what colour, gender, or sexual orientation you are. You CAN help eating enough at breakfast to feed a family of four for a month.

I'm obsese, but not the size to need to seats. I eat two meals, three days a week and fast the other four, only drinking juice. I don't eat any grains, I don't eat dairy. My doctor says I can't restrict any more and stay healthy, I've lost 6 lbs in the past 6 months. Medicine and medical conditions mean you can gain weight without eating too much, without making any bad lifestyle choices.

Size is not a protected class. This is not discrimination. She should have an assistant if needed as flight attendants are not at her personal disposal to push her wheelchair bc she is plus size.

You fat slob, you´re the one who needs some training. I´m sure there is some OSHA regulation that forbids workers pushing that kind of weight. If it´s a ramp imagen if the worker slipped and the wheel chair rolled back down to the plane; The damage to the plane could cost thousands and cause massive delays and inconvenience to the other passengers. It's time we started calling things what they are. Nobody turns in to the blob just because of hormones or medical conditions. I saw a woman on a flight recently that didn't fit through the security arch at the airport. When we got on the plane she didn't stop eating, family bags for crisp, chocolates, I counted 5 cans of coke. I'm a big guy 130kg and on some planes need a seatbelt extension so I know all about weight control.

JaeBae is notorious for demanding that the entire world rearrange itself to accommodate her. She demands free seats on airplanes, bigger bathrooms, bigger seats in restaurants, wider hallways, elevators, and beds in hotels, and that hotels have towels and robes that will cover her 6X body. The entitlement is unreal.

The airline has no problem taking her money, but is incapable of offering needed assistance? The airline can charge for an extra seat if needed, and extra assistance with getting to her seat without ignorant comments. Airlines don't discriminate against bawling babies, people with diet restrictions, people with head coverings, etc. If the airline cannot accommodate obese people they should tell them up front and not take their money.

I remember an american tourist like this woman, same huge overweight problem. She came in europe on a cruise boat. At hospital she wanted to be repatriate cause it was too hard to walk every day in the heat of the summer and with cruise schedule pressure. The problem is that her american insurance asked what was the health event ? And there was nothing about her medical condition. Every test was ok. She was just fat. I was sorry for her cause the cruise boat let her in my city and keep going on their schedule. But the sad reality was here, she was not able to walk a lot but she was not sick so she had to leave hospital and go found an hotel room. No idea what happened to her after that, probably bought a pmane ticket by herself i dont know.

So it's discrimination for her to have to walk her own fat a*s to her seat, but not to ruin the back of another person who would have to push her? Those wheelchairs are for people who actually need them, what if she'd broken it with her weight? How would an actually disabled person use it then? Her own gluttony led her to immobility and everyone coddling her is letting her stay that way.

I've been on plenty of flights and that is a very very average walk to the plane. I've been on way longer. I've had to walk outside onto the actual tarmac (I think it's called that) and go up these stairs to get into the plane. I thought the walkway was gonna be super long, not normal like this.

If the FAA were required to update their policies, the airlines would have to find a way to provide assistance without relying only on manual wheelchairs, eliminating the issue of the attendents' physical ability from being the issue. Here's why this is discrimination (not entitlement): the problem is that the attendant saw an obese person, with that being the only information they had, and made a decision that they were lazy, that they were lying about needing assistance and they did not have a real medical need. Being overweight and having a medical condition that requires assistance are two different things. They can both be true at the same time. Being dismissed just because a person is obese takes away that person's equality. "This person doesn't deserve to be treated like a human being because they're fat." Rarely is obesity a choice. If you truly think that, you've never suffered from it.

Plus size mobility issues are real. I need a chair, I'm plus size, not because I don't care but my condition means my weight is near impossible to control. But that is besides the point, it's the general lack of mobility access for anyone with issues. Airlines do need to consider this as do airports, a simple solution could be a couple of traveler chairs (basic electric wheelchair) that could be used to get people onto the plane and then pushed back... no injuries to staff, no discrimination, no fuss. But in general airlines do make seating to small for people with mobility issues no matter what size, we need space to shift because our arms often do the work of our legs. Bathrooms are hard for the same reasons. We are not mobile no matter what our reasons or size and our being able yo take part in society is a basic human right

Lips go pale then blue, so she was probably using white to mean pale. It depends on the condition though, I'm often red when my 02sats drop initially, I get flushed because my body is stupid and doesn't react correctly, which is part of the problem.

OP wasn't provided the promised support, and from comments it was clear this was due to her size. That's not legal, take action. Airline can refuse certain accomodations, but not in the day long after the reservation has been made. Mobility assistance is not something they can refuse legally without unusual circumstances.

Not only that, imagine if her extra weight broke the wheelchair. Those things have weight limits. How is someone who is actually disabled supposed to get assistance if her fat butt breaks it?

"Plus-size"... i call that obesity and it is not a medical condition. This girl is all about her weight and her life on s****y tiktok. I will never understand americans about weight. All this "positivity" is insane. She is just dangerously fat so whe will have trouble in every day life. Maybe stop blaming the system and try to do something. I don't want to be agressive at her at all but this tiktok propaganda is pure s**t here in BP. I wonder who wrote the article... oh wait...

Yes, I remember seeing some of this stuff from her before. Honestly, if I'd been the flight attendant, I would not have been able to push anyone of this size, nor would I have tried.

I am underweight. Am i allowed more luggage ? No. Am I paying less for a seat? No. Why should a fat person be allowed to use two seats for free. And why should a poor airport worker be forced to push her if she is not disabled?

The airline has no problem taking her money, but is incapable of offering needed assistance? The airline can charge for an extra seat if needed, and extra assistance with getting to her seat without ignorant comments. Airlines don't discriminate against bawling babies, people with diet restrictions, people with head coverings, etc. If the airline cannot accommodate obese people they should tell them up front and not take their money.

With monitoring 02, she has underlying conditions, it's not the weight that is causing the illness but the illness causing the weight.

It was likely obvious to the airport worker, when she approached with SOMEBODY FILMING HER THE WHOLE TIME, that she gave of "influencer vibes". Maybe the person filming could have... helped her with the wheelchair?

I'm wondering if it was the switch from the plus size wheel chair to the narrow ones they use to get you down the narrow aisles of the plane. Maybe someone was untrained in the protocol how to do that.

I’m not being rude but she seemed to be walking fine in the plane. She is not entitled to expect someone smaller than her to push her in a wheelchair and if she’s an influencer I’m sure she could afford to buy an electric wheelchair. Entitled much!!!

Lips go pale then blue, so she was probably using white to mean pale. It depends on the condition though, I'm often red when my 02sats drop initially, I get flushed because my body is stupid and doesn't react correctly, which is part of the problem.

Is she fat by choice? I can't work it out from what's been said. She shouldn't be expecting special treatment. I'm fat, I make my own accommodations and don't expect others to do it for me. They should have crated her and stuck her in the hold if she caused that much trouble!

OP wasn't provided the promised support, and from comments it was clear this was due to her size. That's not legal, take action. Airline can refuse certain accomodations, but not in the day long after the reservation has been made. Mobility assistance is not something they can refuse legally without unusual circumstances.
