Curvy Model Challenges Rigid Victoria’s Secret Model Standards By Recreating Their Catalog, And The Result Speaks For Itself

Brooklyn-based lingerie model Tabria Majors has fighting words for Victoria’s Secret, but all she really needed was three Instagram photos to prove her point. To draw attention to the rigid beauty standards demonstrated by the company’s ad campaigns, she posed in a few of her favorite pieces of the season and looked absolutely bomb. If this doesn’t prove that curvy girls can sell just as many undies as the size-2 VS ‘angels’ seems intent on exclusively using, we don’t know what will (skinny girls, we love you too; we just think there needs to be more diversity going on).

“Maybe I’ll be a Victoria’s Secret Angel this year for Halloween since it ain’t happening in real life,” the plus-size model captioned the steamy set of photos, which has now reached the viral amount of more than 27 thousand likes. This is only the latest clap back a curvy model has leveled at the lingerie empire; runway star, photo model and body positivity spokesperson Ashley Graham has been vocal about being shunned by the brand on multiple occasions, and even did a campaign with Lane Bryant that said it all with a simple hashtag – #ImNoAngel. Perhaps it’s time for these guys to get the memo?

We’ll let you scroll down and decide for yourself.

More info: Instagram, Twitter (h/t)

This is Tabria Majors, a Brooklyn-based model who just singled out Victoria’s Secret for their lack of diversity

The lingerie empire is known for only featuring small models in their ads, which is just so outdated

To prove that curvy girls can sell just as many undies, she recreated (and slayed) a few recent campaigns

“Maybe I’ll be a Victoria’s Secret Angel this year for Halloween, since it ain’t happening in real life”

She’s only the latest plus-size model to take aim at the Pink producers, joining the ranks of Ashley Graham

The Internet, as you might have guessed, was 100% here for it

I hate the whole "it's a real woman" bit. Curvy women are real women, skinny women are real women, tall short whatever.

This is true. I am skinny, always have been, does that mean I'm not a "real woman"? So annoying. I don't mind any body shapes. I don't care how other women look like. Everyone is "real" and beautiful in it's own way!!!

"A real sized person!" So what, because I'm naturally thin and tall, I'm not real and worth less then heavier people? Seriously I haven't seen one bored panda article that makes thin people feel better about themselves, it's only about boosting overweight people's egos.

I'm 5'4" and I'm overweight and I just wanted to tell you I completely agree with you. I am working hard to get my weight down and so far so good. I know it is unhealthy to be this big. Glamorizing being overweight is not good for society at all! And those of you who are naturally tall and thin definitely don't deserve to have your self-esteem torn down!

Actually it makes sense to have a wider variety of models. Different people appreciate different body types and different types of beauty, so it would make economic sense to try to appeal to more than one demographic, wouldn't it? I'm sick of always looking at the same type of models anw, they all start looking the same after awhile!

unfortunately market analysis shows that for certain type of goods the more conventionally beautiful the model is - the better are the sales. This category includes appearance-related goods, like clothes or makeup. People are more attracted to the "dream", that's why there is also this s**t load of photoshop in ads, looking absolutely unrealistic. The psycology underneath it is that buying this lingerie will help you look a tiny bit more like that gorgeous model on the picture. Like you're buying part of that along with the lingerie. (If we think (!) about it we of course know that a bra is just a bra, not a magic wand, but it's how it unconsciously works)

I'm sorry, I just really don't like an obese model. It's awesome that she's happy and she's by no means ugly, but I would not buy 'undies' when presented like that. Also, being obese is very unhealthy and I don't understand why people keep pushing it as something to strive for. We don't need size zeros, but this is the other extreme.

While it makes sense to have a wide range of models with a brand as large as VS, I'm tired of people saying that to be "REAL" you have to be a size 16 and up. There are plenty of naturally slender women who eat and remain a size 2 or 4 because that is their genetic shape. They are just as real as the more voluptuous figures. Diversity is a welcome subject in the realm of beauty. VS has employed more racial types, so let's see them employ a plus-sized model or perhaps (GASP) a women over age 40 in their campaign.

At this point round hips are the beauty standard anyway. Everything is geared towards that shape. Thin models with rectangle shapes aren’t popular anymore socially. A new set of problems has been created.

I wish people would stop referring to these overweight models as curvy. They are overweight, and in some cases downright obese. They may be healthy as their young age, but being fat is generally unhealthy, as they age. Just as showing slim models upsets some people who are probably not thin themselves, showing overweight models encourages some people to think that being overweight is absolutely fine.

I wish people would stop referring to underweight people as slender. But the whole under and over concept is so outdated, I can't believe people still bother with it! I mean, sure, every body has a weight that is not enough and one that is too much. But it's not the same for everybody. My friend was told by her doctor to stop dieting when she was size 14 because she was already severely malnutritioned. The same doctor adviced a size 10 girl to watch her weight. That's because he actually run all the proper tests. But who cares with all the blood and urine and stuff, it's not like it's written on people's foreheads and we just need to judge on one glance, right?

I think she is absolutely beautiful. That said, I don't think Victoria's Secret sells plus size clothing, so why would they have a plus sized model to showcase clothing in sizes they don't in fact sell? They would first need to make apparel in plus sizes. Then it would make sense that they employ plus sized models. I think we've put the cart before the horse here.

How is it diversity if she has the same exact shape, just bigger? Wake me up when a model with actual flaws shows up. This woman just wants attention. Her shape is 1000x more unrealistic and unattainable than the thin model. It’s easy to be thin. It’s practically impossible to be fat with a flat stomach.

I agree that all clothing should be made to fit women of all sizes if the seller really wants his/her clothing line to be mass marketed. Think about it, you wouldn't shop at a Lane Bryant who carries 12-30 plus size if you were a size 4, so why do you think VS should sell sizes past 10 if they cater to then smaller gals? I think Lane B carries sexy undies too. I dunno, maybe I just don't see the big deal these days. No matter what size you are there are stores just for you. Unless you are really huge, then u might have to shop online. There is a limit after all.

Why do plus size models create such a controversy? There's nothing ideological about it - it's really about showing your potential customers how your clothes look on a real human and the fashion industry should finally realise that. I mostly shop online so if I cannot see a pic of the cloth on a relatable body I don't even consider buying it.

"Why do plus size models create such a controversy?" This 'campaign' by this girl was 100% specifically designed to do just that, and it's a specific point of view about a whole lifestyle so that basically does make it an ideology. And if she's a "normal average girl" then this generation will be the first to not outlive their parents. She's not super obese, but she's bordering on where it's really unhealthy. What I don't get is why it's controversial to tell people they should strive for healthier life choices instead of catering to fragile egos.

Victoria secret is successful based on the brand it has established and the image of the Ideal body a woman "Should" have. That is the selling point which makes their fashion unique and only for certain body types. Now creating bigger sizes and having wider variety of models doesn't increase revenue or bring in a huge margin of customers as most people would assume. They tested this back in 2014 and came to the conclusion that having a strict size which stuck to their brand had a more positive impact on their revenue over accommodating sizes that are for average to larger women. Their business exists to make money and to appeal to a niche of consumers who continue to support their brand.

It would not be a good business move for a company that big and popular. They would get called out on it as soon as the model had to make a real physical appearance. This is why they hire models who are close to the "ideal" choice that helps products sell more.

I don't think she is pretty, she looks nothing like a model. The modeling industry used to look for women who are stunning, not common, average , cute enough but actually stunning, beautiful, unique. Social media and body positivity are ruining the modeling industry BC they are letting everyone into an industry they don't belong in. The truth is, even if she were thin, her face isn't up to par. Yes, a lot of today's top models are quite average but the plus size girls are getting their average faces in based on the politically correct social media scam. If she were this size and stunning, that would at least make sense tho she would still be an unhealthy size. But she's not stunning, she's pandering to heavier, average faced girls and trying to bully and shame Victoria's secret into giving her the career she mistakenly thinks she deserves. Social media killed the supermodel.

So tired of seeing plus size model b*tch about VS. AND I'm a plus size model too! 1. VS is a business/brand. They can target who they want. Every business has a clientele and target market. Why is everyone so obsessed with VS’s advertising and business plans? We don’t see smaller women protesting about Lane Bryant. No one is boycotting McDonald’s because they don’t sell tacos. I don’t see any campaigns targeting Rebok to put out high heels. Sure, VS sells XL clothing and it would be cool to see them using models to fit all sizes they offer, but they don’t. So what. If you don’t agree with them, STOP PROMOTING THEIR NAME! Everyone sounds whiny and offended. 2. VS Angels are beautiful! Can we just support them? -Sarah Rose - Plus Size Model

Oh, so many of these comments make me wanna vomit Instead of appreciating a beautiful women in her own rights, she has to be torn down. Not only that, but all beauty has to be considered in the context of either garment seizes or society- beware the beauty, it might bite you right in the.... Women are beautiful. So are men. And everything in between. VS does not cater to all people, only to a specific type, so that is that and let's roll on, sod it, plenty of companies out there. Beauty-Standards are about to change, they always did- it is a fluid thing, just follow history. Yet, I have never heard of anyone who lived a prolonged live because of extreme dietary measures: "Yeah, I am 89 and just look at my VS underwear"- never heard of that. We age. We are what we are. Some people shine brighter than others, because maybe they got the point, which is not tiny or voluptuous curves: it is happiness in the small things, pride in one self and stamina.

What does this "prove" exactly? That larger women can wear lingerie? I don't think that was ever up for debate. If she's trying to say that they would look the same or better in the catalogue, that's still up to the viewer. I personally don't prefer her version. And why is it that some women continually chase things that don't want them: men, jobs, lingerie companies. If VS won't photograph you or make things in your size, LET IT GO! It drives me nuts How fashion models industries either don’t show their clothes the way they are. (They pin, spray, and tuck their closes.) Or they make clothes so impractical that no one but a model on the runway would wear them. They need more diversity and more practical clothing on show.

I'm so sorry, but I'm going to throw a really unpopular opinion... Every women are real, whatever their body shape. But not every body shape is, or should be, acceptable on a healthy sense, by first and foremost the one who has it. A woman must feel well with her body, but needs also to be self critical if her body and/or her lifestyle contribute negatively for her wellbeing. In lack of other factors, the ideal body of a woman is the one that brings proportion between height and weight, and keeps said woman physically healthy throughout her entire life, or the most of it. The model above, aside her undoubtedly natural beauty, is not curvy. She is overweight! I'm clearly overweight (and trying really hard to counteract it!), and I truly believe this is a bad acceptance of human body, not because is ugly, but because is UNHEALTHY. It is! Even if you have this body and semingly are OK nowadays, if you don't understand in time what is doing to your bodyyou'll suffer the consequences later.

Stop comparing big and small! Accept yourself for who you are O.J. the inside not by your waist size! Just because I person isn’t less than a size 10 doesn’t make that person unhealthy or not beautiful. I believe, based on how many times I’ve gone into a clothing store and sizes 10-14 are usually sold out or out of stock, that most women are these sizes and does that make them obese or fat or unhealthy? We are all built differently and have different DNA, come from different parts of the world with different ancestors so with so much difference it actually makes us equal regardless of sizes or height or weight! Beauty lives within and we need to stop making such a big deal out of the way we look on the outside! Who are any of us to judge anyways?

There are definitely smaller people out there and it's nice for them to have lots of options. But the problem is the average woman is not 'small' and that's the only size being targeted in pretty much every nice store like that. Skinny women aren't fake women. As much as larger women aren't fake women either. In fact some people are just naturally tiny or skinny. And they want to gain weight but struggle with that. As a plus sized woman (or fat as they really mean) I can't go into most high end stores and walk out with more than accessories in most. And there aren't many clothing stores that are either embracing women of all sizes or specializing in plus sizes. Those stores tend to be more expensive despite the fact they're marketing towards the majority of the population.

Il think it's good to present different types offre beauty (I personally prefer asian and black women over the classic all-american blonde!) but let's not go as far as saying stupid stuff like "real women have curves" or "real size models"; it's implying that smaller women are not "real" and plain insuline.

Ladies love yourselves. I literally no lie was at a 36, 26, 36, in high school and was an athlete on top of the world weighing in at 128. Now at 45 I weigh in 170 pounds its more like 38, 30, 40. I just swam the length of the English channel last year, and am currently playing basket ball with freshman and juniors at the local collage. Who says big girls can't have fun. I have been happy with both sides of me, and my husband likes me a little fuller. SOoo be happy with what you got and as long as you are not a health risk to yourself be kind to your ego and body and by yourself some lingerie. Maybe even start your own chain of lace and lavishness!!!!

Noone would deny she is good looking but "curvy" is not accurate. she is large, heavy, chunky, big, kind of fat, not too fat but needs to watch it a little better, not as fit as she could be, and even too big to compare...why be PC when the truth is right in front of us. Again I would say pretty good looking, a little heavy for my usual taste but would not hesitate to say yes if she were willing to date... The only turnoff is the attitude to whine about the difference in a VS model and herself. There really is NO comparing, I would rather be with a NON VS model and be with someone that displays the actual characteristics I long for and look for. 10 bucks says neither are approachable to average persons but given this article Tabria is the clear winner and hopefully approachable, likable, and better looking in person

No matter what you all say.

Agree with everything, It's only the same in the modelling world for me!! We are not all chizzled Adonises with thighs the size of buses with a square jaw line and blonde hair and blue eyes! Get normal people! you would probably sell more but no we have to have these models and others in the female fashion side who desperately need a good meal. Also, this is a major gripe for me is this big fashion houses picking 7-10 year olds!! This is just bloody wrong!! Hate the industry!!!

It makes sense financially to offer a wide range of sizes including separates for those who have tops and bottoms that don't match designer's idea of what is "normal" or "average" proportions.

the way I see it, this so-called "curvy" trend is a load of b******t. That "curvy" woman right there is plainly and simply fat, and fat is not sexy, and it is definitely not healthy(I can hardly imagine what her joints will feel like by the time she's 50 if she doesn't lose weight, and joint issues are some of the milder problems that she'll have to deal with if she doesn't keep her weight in check. I'm speaking of diabetes and possible organ failure). If you really need to put a tag on people's weight, use healthy and/or sickly as the case may be

This woman is being condescending towards thin woman or prefect woman. Somehow someone who works hard and doesnt eat c**p to maintain her figure is a "real woman" These people have no problem with woman wearing make up to look like something they are not. This fat lady herself has worn so much make to make her fat face look thinner than it actually is. I like the comment that said why are you trying make people who don't like you to like you. Its ture you cant force someone to like you. I am a fat guy and I don't expect think girls to like me. But I do get a lot of thin girls who like me for my personality and my intelligence.(yeah they think i am smart :-P) and some just fall in love with me and it doesnt matter my extra fat. I am just trying to get thin everyday. I Know THIS IS NOT REAL. I was NOT fat. I because fat because I didnt know what i was supposed to eat. I just didnt stop even after getting fat. I have no health problems because I am a vegan and now eat very healthy.

I’m a vegan and I’m perfectly average weight and height. Being vegan doesn’t mean you are thin or healthy really. It’s funny how there’s no middle ground in the modeling industry. They’re either fat or thin. Show me a 5’6” model who is 140-150lbs of evenly distributed weight. It doesn’t exist. Yet they claim to be promoting inclusion by introducing 180lbs+ women. That’s not inclusion, that’s swinging the pendulum. By the way, I’m not disagreeing with you - just adding to your comment.

With the exception of Renee Susann, I think most of these commentors listed have good points. What makes me angry is she is suggesting barring women over a certain height from being models, which is just as bad as barring women over a certain weight. The takeaway here ought to be that we celebrate the unique beauty of all women, not that we go from favoring one female image to another. That is what the Patriarchy has been doing for thousands of years.

Meowton Mewsk

This is the problem. The standard she wants to set is exactly the way it’s been for years. People would look at emaciated models and say “I wish I looked that good,” and we had to campaign for years to get rid of such unrealistic standards. Instead of being inclusive, we’ve just replaced thin with “chubby with a flat stomach” and girls are still looking at it, feeling inadequate and saying, “I wish I looked that good.”

Unfortunately, Victoria's Secret will *never* have a larger size model in their lineup. Look at how long it took them to include models of color. They "bragged" this year that they have more models of color this year than any other. Most of the rest of them, though, are skinny blondes, with a smattering of brunettes. They have an "angel" brand to protect, and while they *may* eventually produce larger lingerie, and even might have a larger print model, you'll never see a large model. At least in my lifetime. And yes, I'm larger. I just know what the facts are regarding Victoria's Secret.

I don't like being called a "twig" and I'm also a REAL SIZED woman. If you're fat, good for you, but don't forget that that door swings both ways and body shaming is body shaming no matter what. “Maybe I’ll be a Victoria’s Secret Angel this year for Halloween, since it ain’t happening in real life” <- THIS! Come on VS, the vast majority of us women are not 5' 11" and 135 lbs. The stigma that is put on women by the media and the vast majority of the fashion industry (not all of them, such as ModCloth - modelling women of all sizes, and Dear Kate), it gives all people the wrong idea of what the female body should look like. It's a rather vain and confidence crushing idea. A women of size, a women with a birthmark on her face, or a women with cellulite, ect... can be just as gorgeous, maybe if not more gorgeous, than the underweight supermodel. The fact that the real women has control over her body, who's body isn't owned by a modelling agency, is empowering. She can be beautiful at any size and height. Fat shaming and body shaming just isn't right on any platform in my opinion.

Actually it makes sense to have a wider variety of models. Different people appreciate different body types and different types of beauty, so it would make economic sense to try to appeal to more than one demographic, wouldn't it? unfortunately market analysis shows that for certain type of goods the more conventionally beautiful the model is - the better are the sales.

There are other places for you to shop.

10 bucks says neither are approachable to average persons but given this article Tabria is the clear winner and hopefully approachable, likable, and better looking in person

the way I see it, this so-called "curvy" trend is a load of b******t.

VC is only possible after a breast reduction last year. The bras look nice, but not comfortable (still), and not functional, (still). Would rather wear one that works and doesn't dig into me than one of VC's bras. Still.

It is a damn shame that we, as women, can't be just a woman!!! I am a curvy, 6' woman.......hell no, I am just a woman, period!!! I am proud of my body and have a ton of confidence in myself. My mama taught me well. Look at me and love me for who I am, not what I look like!!!!

It's time to live healthier. She's overweight, and I think it's horrible to make girls believe it's ok to be obese. It's just as bad as making girls think they have to starve themselves to be pretty.

I am tiny and I have to basically Photoshop most clothing to get some idea of how it might look on me. This is stupid. The average female is a 14/16 right now...how many size 2s are going to be shopping? Show the reality and maybe sell to the majority and make lots of money....

Let's be honest: "Would bang" and "Good for her" are two different things. Just because she wouldn't have troubles finding someone to bang doesn't mean she should be encouraged to stay that size and not make healthier choices.

I agree so much with the comment about being petite & curvy! I used to be a size PEC (Petite Extra Curvy) Now I'm PSC (Petite Slightly Curvy) It's still hard to find clothes that fit properly, without alterations. It makes clothes shopping very expensive and frustrating.

I find it funny how you use those abbreviations for the word overweight and obese. You're not 'curvy' you're unhealthy.

Some people like chocolate, some vanilla. The media has taken the hypocritical (shocking I know) turn and has started celebrating obesity and shaming fit people. Large women with large frames and toned bodies are one thing. Cellulite and and pure obesity are unhealthy. AGAIN, large framed women who are toned and healthy are hot. Pure obesity only appeals to undisciplined people with no self -control. Bleck.

So we have Rebecca Gee above who calls thinner women "twigs" and Tracy Rowe above who says "VS doesn't believe REAL SIZED women exist." For most of my adult life I have been very thin and people say nasty things to me about it. I am at a healthy weight now but my weight is often very low. Guess what? I don't like being called a "twig" and I'm also a REAL SIZED woman. If you're fat, good for you, but don't forget that that door swings both ways and body shaming is body shaming no matter what. People just need to stop being such jerks about others because we are not perfect.

That’s because size 12 in 1955 would be about a 2 or 4 in today’s sizes. She was about 120lbs with a waistline under 30 inches. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-3198374/Chart-reveals-clothing-sizes-changed-past-60-years-shows-size-12-Marilyn-Monroe-00-8-today.html

Victoria's Secret is missing out on a great deal of the fashion world market. Until when she continues to make clothes only for thin people? I believe it's time to change that concept. (Or prejudice). Look how beautiful my Chubby Model is. Beautiful-...9b36d3.jpg Beautiful-Chubby-5a04b869b36d3.jpg

They're models, not average women.. there's a difference. I'd rather see models as small and fit. Something to strive for. Not everybody is a fashion model, and I don't qualify, but I guess I'm okay with that. Doesnt mean they need to make models look like me, bc I am not one!
