I started making pies as a way to deal with the boredom of our first Covid lockdown in March.

I’m a mum of two boys and work part-time in graphic design. In the first lockdown we had in Auckland, New Zealand, I started to make pies as a way of relieving the boredom, fulfilling my creativity, and also getting dinner on the table!

My pies are mostly inspired by my family, my moods, and internet culture. They are a mix of social commentary and sweet delights. I work on each pie for over 3 days in my spare time and it takes my family about 5 minutes to eat!!

The Homer Pie

The Homer Pie

The Homer pie was made as an apology to my husband. I was a bit grumpy one night in lockdown and bit his head off. He backed out of the room like the meme of Homer backing into the hedge. It made me laugh, so I made a pie about it.

So jealous of you pie, design, comp, artistic and color skills. I study and I never get it except by luck/accident. Mad respect.

Thank you! I'm sure yours are better than you give yourself credit for. I think being kind to yourself about your creative journey is the key. There are heaps of things I hate about my pies, but I decided to ignore my inner critic and just keep making (and eating ;-)). If you celebrate what you love about your work, others will too.

The Pie-llenium Falcon came about one night when I asked my 11-year-old what he thought would make a cool pie. He said the Millennium Falcon—challenge accepted, son!

Letting The Days Go Pie

Letting The Days Go Pie

"Letting the days go pie" is another music-inspired bake. It felt appropriate to the Covid situation and one of my favorite Talking Heads songs. As with the "Let's dance, Grum-pie Cat," I love Bowie—and internet memes, so I made a pie about that too.

The FBGM Pie

The FBGM Pie

The FBGM pie is another internet-inspired pie. I love the juxtaposition between the periodic table and hip-hop culture: only on the internet can you find such things. If you translate all those elements into their symbols it comes out as: (F)fluorine (U)uranium (C)carbon (K)potassium (Bi)bismuth (Tc)technetium (He)helium (S)sulfur (Ge)germanium (Tm)thulium (O)oxygen (Ne)neon (Y)yttrium—a Junior Mafia song sung by Notorious B.I.G.
