“She’s not like other girls!” We’re all familiar with this phrase that became an internet phenomenon in the early 2010s. Girls who love eating pizza, who drink beer but never gain weight, girls who look like models without wearing makeup and girls who are just “one of the boys” because women never want to be friends with them.
There’s nothing inherently wrong with being unique, and we all have special quirks that will make us stand out. But the idea of claiming that you’re “not like other girls” doesn’t just celebrate one person’s uniqueness, it also implies that all other women are a monolith. And it perpetuates the idea that interesting women who may not like stereotypically feminine things are rare.

She preaches shes better than women getting degrees and not having children because by being a stay at home mom on her farm with her 4 kids and pregnant at 23 years old is "going against the grain" as if thats not what women were forced into for thousands of years because of the patriarchy and societal expectations of women .. they're not vaccinated and "unschooled" (?) and now shes into "free birthing" which is an extremely dangerous way to give birth (no check ups, no prenatal care, no birthing guide, no meds, no nothing..) she is seriously psychologically f*cked up for thinking this is the best way to care for your family. Obviously, women didn't like being slaves trapped in the house. If you want to play frontier-mom, go for it. But women are just like men, we all have different talents and skills. I can rebuild an engine and code. I prefer to be a member of the 21st century not the 6th.

The Not Like The Other Girls subreddit has been around for years now, and it has never had a shortage of content. The community has 944k members, and it’s one of the largest subreddits on the platform. But just like everything else, it has changed a bit over time. A few years ago, the posts may have been more focused on girls who want everyone to know that they don’t wear makeup, don’t like “girly” things and don’t ever plan on getting married.
Today, however, there seems to be an influx of women posting online about how they’re not like other girls because they’re not feminists. Trad wives are becoming increasingly popular online, and today, lots of “pick me” girls seem to be conservative, anti-abortion and really into drinking raw milk for some reason.

Regardless of what makes a woman believe that she’s not like the rest of us, it’s sad to see girls who want to separate themselves from other women. The women that I know are strong, brilliant, brave, creative, intelligent, hilarious and fascinating. I would love to be like them! But sadly, many of us have been taught from a young age that we should be in competition with other women and should compare ourselves to other girls, so unless we unlearn that toxic idea, it can be easy to fall into a pattern of trying to prove that we’re better than other women.

Recently, the “not like other girls” women have also been labeled “pick me girls.” But they’re essentially the same archetype, women who go out of their way to separate themselves from other girls and gain male approval. But according to life coach Bayu Prihandito, we should approach this topic with empathy.
“People, especially young women as they continue to grow up, have to navigate a society filled with mixed messages about their worth, identity, and the roles they are expected to play,” Prihandito told CNN. “And you have social media, the usual suspect, amplifying these messages and creating an environment where external validation is not just sought after but often seems necessary.”

I do a lot of work with seniors & folks with traumatic brain injuries. We focus on exercising cognitive awareness & enhancing neuroplasticity via gaming. 1/3 of them are finishing up BG3, another 1/3 are finishing or new gaming Elden before June, the remaining 1/3 are all over the board playing everything from mobile tap games to Fortnite to platformers, dungeons & VR. Many had never played a video game until they joined our group. Many more hadn’t played since Atari 2600. They’re all very proud of being gamers, but they’re so nonassuming. There are no qualifiers of what it means to be a gamer other than they, indeed, play video games.

Pokemon and Mario are some of the most recognizable gaming franchises out there, so stfu OP. They are part of the 90s kid gaming starter pack. (I still have the OG Pokemon games for the Gameboy I had when I was 10.) And the Ninetendo 64 was fun! It had 007, Mario, Perfect Dark, and Resident Evil 2. (N64 RE2 was great because it had additional files you could collect which provided more backstory and a randomizer mode, so the items were a surprise, but in a fun way.) I guess this is an old post since they keep mentioning PS4. Get a PS5 and install the extended storage OP so you can finally be a real gamer. And you haven't even play nearly 600 hours of Horizon Forbidden West like me? Loser. BTW your dad is my new sugar daddy and is taking me to Greece and is going to kick you out of your basement. (I hope that was clear that was sarcasm. Except I really did play that much Horizon Forbidden West.)

This person doesn't have a library of shame. 300 hrs (no plus for mathematical reasons) would put me at 15 years when playing 24/7. Or, removing weekends and holidays, that would be enough to cover 73 years working full-time (40hrs) Not nearly all those games have 300hrs gameplay. And I am ashamed of my unplayed games list, yes.

I play Sims and Candy Crush. But I also have been gaming since PSone days (Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Silent Hill). Still playing TR and RE games, as well as Far Cry series, most horror games, a lot of survival games. I’ll be 53 this year and won’t be giving up gaming anytime soon

Internalized misogyny is a powerful and insidious thing that women need to be aware of to be able to break. Society tells us that women are one-dimensional beings who should love the color pink, taking care of the home, raising children and being submissive. And while there’s absolutely nothing wrong with any of those things if you genuinely want and enjoy them, the problem arises when girls are told that if they’re not like that, they must be super special and unique and quirky.

However, in this day and age, we should not be perpetuating the belief that some women are better than others or that being “unique” makes you more valuable or attractive. There is literally nothing that makes me hotter than women who endorse allowing your partner/spouse to get a total free pass from parenting, helping around the house, or having to do anything but relax because they bring home a paycheck.

This could be Alaska in Looking for Alaska, Ramona Flowers in Scott Pilgrim v. The World, Clementine in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Summer in 500 Days of Summer and countless other female characters. This archetype is often portrayed through the male gaze and only there to enhance the male protagonist’s life or story. They usually don’t have much of a plot or development of their own and often leave him once they’ve served their purpose.

Overall, the world should be much kinder to women. It seems like we can never win, whether we love Taylor Swift and Stanley cups or sports and metal music. That said, even feminism has its cliques and some of these would qualify as the school of French feminism that celebrates femininity and difference between the genders. I think it was the French feminist Luce Irigaray who famously arrived at events in a fur coat, lipstick and not much else (but it's a long time ago so apols if wrong person).

No no, you totally have a point, and it's something to think about. Usually the line I have where I jump into mockery is when they start with the anti-vax stuffs and how women shouldn't vote. A lot of this is just women dealing with their own insecurities in a relatively harmless way. Then you get the quiverful weirdos, who ARE actively harmful by being Typhoid Mary and trying to push regressive views. The first grow out of it usually. The second makes another generation to ostensibly fill the world with more sourdough and Jesus and backwards thinking.
