Four years ago I was skimming through a local paper when I  came across an article about an abandoned 14th-century villa located just a few miles north from Milan. “It sounds like a good location to take photos,” I thought, so I decided to go and check it out.

The first thing I remember is a vivid scent of wet wood and a haunting silence around me. It was dark, damp, and really quiet.

Since that first trip, I had visited more than 100 abandoned villas across northern and central Italy. There is a whole world of abandoned places out there.

But there is only one thing that every time I found it inside these places takes my breath away - pianos. I try to imagine the songs they played and I almost seem to hear them.

I find it interesting that many of the pianos have missing parts,or the keyboard is upside down ,or in some cases, totally stripped. I wonder why they were abandoned? Where did the residents go and why weren't they sold? Manyexpats buy these and bring them back to life . What a shame!
