August 23, 1989: 2 Million People Form A Human Chain Through Latvia, Estonia, And Lithuania, Uniting All 3 Countries To Show The World Their Desire To Escape The Soviet Union
And now that bald dwarf with a big ego is trying to bring it back. F**k Putin.
I was part of this "chain". I was 6 years old but sublime emotions are still in my memory.
I was 12yo boy and I was there with my parents. On the Estonian side.
my father lived in the motherland at that time but he told me that he drove to be a part of the chain
I never knew about this.. how awesome! It's giving me goosebumps to think about the sheer size of this demonstration, two million people across three countries, WOW!
There were people all over the world who took part. I remember my father & his family taking part with hundreds of other Latvian, Estonian & Lithuanian people in Adelaide & Melbourne, Australia.
Load More Replies...I remember when we decorated Easter gingerbread with new post-communist name of our country that changed just around the Easter 1990, I could not stop giggling at the new name. Everything was so new and bizzare. They were happy times full of optimism. We truly believed Russians are gone for good, I really did not think I’ll live to see the plague try to spread west again. Puck Futin!
I am so sorry. I guess everyone hoped that Russia would come around and get along with the West. It still seems so self-defeating to me to think that they have just wrecked all their good business relationships with the West. For what??? It's always a delicate dance, I know, but the idea that we can tame other autocratic countries with business relationships has had mixed results at best. It seems like Putin, in his mind, lives in another century. One where conquest matters, not getting along. There is a reason why the rest of Europe gave up that mentality, the cost of war is just too much.
Load More Replies...Omg how have I never heard of this. This is humanity at its best, coming together for a better future. Today we could learn a lot from this. Who's game, I mean if I'm the only one who shows up I don't think it would have the desired effect. 2 million people is astonishing
Wow. Imagine. All of the coordination required in order to achieve this. The desperation that drove these people and yet they did not show fear because they had nothing to lose. Unlike all the other countries that only supplying to aid to Ukraine- with Putin having allies in North Korea and China. China has forged trade ties with India, which is alarming to say the least.
The Couple On The Woodstock Album Cover Is Still Together 50 Years Later In 2019
Sadly, she died of leukemia March 18 of this year. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/27/arts/music/bobbi-ercoline-dead.html

I have that album! Or rather, my dad had it. He never opened it so I've never listened to it.
My dad did too--his was opened and VERY well listened to through!

we traveled through Scotland. on the very first day, late in the evening we stopped to rest. I turned on the flashlight on my mobile phone and started making a circle of 180 degrees. I turned around myself almost a full circle when I suddenly saw a dozen glowing eyes very close to me. I almost had a heart attack. it took me a few seconds to realize that huge shaggy red cows were watching us through the fence all this time
I love that a picture of a group of racoons is part of the “40 Important Historical Photos” series 😄
The creator of the 'Photos From History' Instagram page has shared over 2.7k photos over the years. At the time of writing, the account had 1,430 followers.
The founder of the page quotes legendary French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson in the bio: “It is an illusion that photos are made with the camera. They are made with the eye, heart, and head.” We’re particularly big fans of the quote because we, too, believe that photography goes beyond technical skills and is Art with a capital ‘A.’
The Swedish Warship Vasa Sank In 1628 Less Than A Mile Into Its Maiden Voyage And Was Recovered From The Sea Floor After 333 Years Almost Completely Intact
Here is an illustration of her at sea VASA-6436d...77e589.jpg
The thing I'm curious about is: Why is this ship so intact after 333 years, but the Titanic is WAY more damaged in almost 112 years of being underwater? Is it something to do with the location this ship was recovered from compared to where the Titanic sank?
Well, the Titanic split into two on or near the water's surface during the sinking in 1912, causing immediate structural damage. We also have to consider where Titanic ended up. The Titanic lies over 12 000 ft (3 700 m) below the surface. As the ship plummeted to the bottom of the ocean, large pieces of the superstructure were stripped away and the stern (back) section imploded as it plowed into the sea bottom due to trapped air inside. In contrast, the Vasa just kind of gently flopped over and sank to a depth of only 105 ft (32 m) near the shore. Today, the Titanic is being eaten by rusticles--a class of rust-eating bacteria first found on Titanic (Halomonas titanicae). This bacteria will finish the work the iceberg started in 1912, destroying the ship and returning it to its natural components. The ship has become its own ecosystem, inhabited by an array of sea life unique to the wreck site. You would think that because the Titanic is made of metal and the Vasa is made of wood, the Titanic should have lasted longer, but treated organic materials-- tanned leather, seasoned/oiled/lacquered wood, etc. routinely outlast plate metal and rivets, especially in low oxygen, high-current, salty environments like underwater.

East German Soldier Helps A Little Boy Sneak Across The Berlin Wall The Day It Was Erected In 1961
This is heart breaking , I'm half German and this picture is very famous in Germany. Families were split within a night and people who were elsewhere over night were stuck the other side. For a short time after people were allowed to chose which side to stay , many students went west. But a lot of parents also abandonned their children to flee to the West. They put them in orphanages or just with neighbours.
This is the other famous photo, where an east-german soldier "jumps to freedom" - even has a statue in Berlin mauerbau16...fullhd.jpg
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sprung_in_die_Freiheit
When VP George HW Bush came to Berlin in 1985 he said it best. The Berlin Wall was one of the most oppressive man made objects in the world. To see pictures & films of it did not do it much justice. Viewing it in person was very emotional. I was stationed in West Berlin in the early 80s.
There is a wonderful fiction trilogy about a girl and her brother that were separated by the wall. Their father is very ill so she stayed to take care of him and sent her brother to the west with her best friend. The first book started when the wall went up and the last one ends when it came down and they are reunited. The books follow her life during this time. It’s the Berlin Butterfly series “Ensnared”, “Deception”, & “Release” by Leah Moyes. They’re available on Amazon.
My brother was there when it all happened. I have photos of him at Check Point Charlie. Here is a photo of him standing guard duty looking over into East Berlin. Scan-5-67f...f-jpeg.jpg
Absolutely heartbreaking... but also inspiring! He knew what would happen, and he still did it... such courage!
King Arthur's Statue Overlooking The Atlantic Ocean On The Cliffs Of Tintagel In Cornwall, England
Damn, I was in Cornwall in 2007. No one mentioned this, this Is something I would have loved to have seen.
Hey another post about Cornwall, there was on the last post as well, I'm glad that my home is getting some attention
Some other brilliant quotes by Cartier-Bresson include the idea that “your first 10,000 photographs are your worst,” suggesting that there’s no substitute for practice and experience. He adds that “the picture is good or not from the moment it was caught in the camera,” alluding to the idea that art isn’t purely subjective—there’s a lot of objectivity hiding in each snap.
According to the French legend, taking a photograph means aligning “the head, the eye, and the heart.” For him, the camera was an extension of his body, and he would keep it with him at all times.
Photographer Cartier-Bresson said that the difference between a good picture and a mediocre one is “a question of millimeters.” Those tiny differences were essential. “I didn’t think there is such a big difference between photographers. But it is that little difference that counts, maybe,” he mused.
Helen Mirren, 1967
I absolutely adore Helen Mirren and think that she is an amazing actress.
I first saw her in the film Excalibur. Well worth a view.
Load More Replies...She's so talented and beautiful, and sassy to boot. Even now at the age of 77 she's still gorgeous and has a kind of fiery spirit. She has such a great range as an actress too.
A wonderful, wonderful woman. She's atheist but has good values that aren't dictated by religion, is childless, has achieved so much and inspired so many people. Edit: Not exactly athiest, she describes herself as Christian but doesn't believe in God.
The Last Public Appearance Of Laurel & Hardy In 1956
Oliver Hardy passed away the following year due to heart complications. Due to his own ill health at the time Stan Laurel was unable to go to his dear friend's funeral, famously saying 'Babe would understand." Laurel would never recover from Hardy's death. He refused to perform in any capacity afterwards, turning down interviews, stage and screen roles. Instead, Laurel decided to dedicate the remainder of his life to his fans and offering tips to up and coming comedians. His address to his small Santa Monica apartment and phone number where published in the phonebook. He eagerly greeted fans and guests that would show up unannounced. Fans were surprised that Laurel, himself, would answer the phone. Much of his free time was dedicated to answering his fan mail. He insisted that each and every letter be answered personally. Amongst the up and coming Comedians that often visited Stan Laurel were Jerry Lewis and Dick Van Dyke. The advice they received from Laurel was invaluable to the later success of their careers. Stan Laurel out lived Oliver Hardy by eight years. As his health continued to decline, he remained out of the public eye, fearing that children would be horrified by his current old appearance. In 1965, he suffered a final heart attack and four days later passed away. At his funeral, Dick Van Dyke gave the eulogy and among the attendees were Hal Roach Sr and silent film comedian Buster Keaton who remarked "Chaplin wasn't the funniest, I wasn't the funniest, he was the funniest"

Unfortunately she already died in 1982 but I still miss her.

The variety in TV shows back in the 60's was pretty limited, as were the number of broadcast stations, so we got to watch the "oldies", like Chaplin, Keaton, The Marx Bros., and Laurel and Hardy fairly regularly.
Archeologists Unearth 2,200 Year Old Mosaics In An Ancient Greek City Named Zeugma In Gaziantep Province, Turkey
They have given us the opportunity to witness the unveiling of Greek and Roman art that hasn't been seen in thousands of years. Three new mosaics have been discovered. They are exceptionally well preserved mosaics, dating back to the 2nd century BCE.
gaziantep was destroyed during the earthquake, I wonder if this survived?
Every time I see one of these beautiful mosaics unearthed, they just take my breath away. I start to imagine the houses they were in, and the people who walked on them. The stories they could tell! Then the more practical part of me comes out and thinks. "I wouldn't mind having a floor like that in my own home!"
I always wondered how they get buried in the first place. 1000s of years of... what?
Me too. When i hear about old cities under new, i wonder how that happend
Load More Replies...I saw something similar. This one is a little more detailed / complete. But there is (or was) a mosaic in Pompei that was still mostly intact and looked pretty cool. and it was humbling to think somebody made that 2000(ish) years ago and it's still there. The whole 'Hans Solo in carbonite' treatment probably helped but still impressive
In 3000 years there will be Nothing left of our things (well, plastic bags) except the toy hans solos in carbonite. People will be like, who is this guy??
Load More Replies...Yes, this is what archeology is all about. . .! But, is he actually squatting with his shoes on the artwork???
Bored Panda wanted to get professional photographer Dominic's thoughts on Cartier-Bresson's quote about millimeters separating the great from the mediocre.
"I think in some ways he is right. My interpretation of that is that the best photos are in the small details," he told us, adding that what makes a good photo to someone is open to interpretation. "But, if we're talking about art and aesthetics, then it definitely comes down to a game of millimeters," he said that the French photographer's thoughts can be interpreted differently.
We also wanted to get the photographer's opinion on standing out with one's photography now compared to a few decades ago. Dominic, from Ohio, believes that the art form has become far more accessible, so there's a lot more content. However, quality photographers will almost always stand out.

Ornithologist Jerry Mcgahan Holding A 6-Month-Old Andean Condor In 1971
Condors are impressive, already. But if you really want to be flashed, you need a harpy eagle and its truly piercing, unsettling gaze. THIS is the most beautiful representative of any bird of prey.
Omg, every time I think of harpy eagles I get heart palpitations, I don't know how one bird can look so much like a judgmental auntie and so much like a serial killer at the same time.
Load More Replies...Yep, that's a "baby condor"... when they're adults, they're a mixture of beautiful, awe inducing and straight-up terrifying
Load More Replies...Jerry Mcgahan became a beekeeper, painter, photographer, and writer. His best-known work was A Condor Brings the Sun. Yes, a much safer creature to hold in the mind and pen than in the hand.
Load More Replies...That's not how birds work. Once a bird has fledged it is already at full adult size.
Load More Replies..."At one time in history, you had to have a lot of money to be a photographer. Now, nearly everyone has a camera on them at all times. To some degree, it diminishes the art form, but, on the other hand, it opens the art form to so many more and creates a wider range of artists," he explained.
The professional photographer added that this doesn't necessarily mean that everyone with a camera is an artist. However, "it does put the power of artistic expression in the hands of more people, myself included."
He opened up to Bored Panda that his own photographic journey began as a teenager with a 1.3-megapixel cellphone camera. "What started as me taking photos of my friends skateboarding, turned into something much more."

One of my former physical education teachers kept the peace by taking a running start (barefoot), nearly demolishing the springboard, and performing a handspring over the long horse, angled with a 3/4 somersault and perfect landing.

Load More Replies...Grace Jones By Jean-Paul Goude, 1981
A friend of mine was a huge fan of hers, probably still is. He was working in a restaurant on Old Compton Street, in London. She comes in with a friend to get breakfast. She’s seated in his section and he’s beside himself! He takes her order etc etc, and just before her food arrives, he nervously goes up to her and asks if he could have her autograph? “NO!!! But you can get me the ketchup!” He still sees that as a win!
Also in the mid 1970s, Grace Jones, Jerry Hall and Jessica Lange all shared an apartment together in Paris. They all went on holiday together and Ms Jones’ suitcase contained nothing but sunglasses!

My sister adored her growing up. And the attitude was always that she wasn't pretty. I never understood that. I always thought she was stunningly beautiful since I was a little girl. Especially those eyes!
Same here. I guess it's because her face isn't perfect or symmetrical or any of the things considered pretty. I find her beautiful because her face is way more interesting than the perfect faces of the "beauties", who all end up looking exactly the same. Streisand's face may has its imperfections but, my goodness, they truly work together to make her stunning.
Load More Replies...Regal yes but she was a horrible diva, demanding that any hotel room she stayed in be painted peach because it was the only colour she felt suited her complexion.
In the expert's opinion, there's a saturation of photographs online these days, however, "those who excel in and hone their craft will stand out." He added that things tend to happen for a reason and that some images might stand out even if we don't understand why, at the moment.
Finally, Bored Panda was interested in Dominic's take on how AI might impact the photography industry. Some artists and writers are already worried about the rise of AI, and we wanted to know whether photographers have anything weighing on their minds, too.
"If anything, I could see AI becoming another art form in its entirety (which I feel it's already headed there) and possibly make photography more of an art form once again, rather than something we just take for granted," he shared his perspective with Bored Panda.
However, Dominic was honest that he has concerns about AI-generated images manipulating what is and isn't real. "I recently saw a political image that I did not know was AI. I thought it was a staged photograph, but I did not know it was AI until someone pointed it out to me. The spread of fallacy through generated images is something that scares me," he said, adding that other than that, photographers shouldn't fear AI.

In A 1996 Incident At An Illinois Zoo, A Female Gorilla Cradled A 3-Year-Old Boy Who Fell Nearly 20 Feet Into Her Enclosure An 8-Year-Old Gorilla Named Binti Jua Made Worldwide Headlines When She Carried A Boy To Safety After He Slipped Away From His Mother And Climbed Through A Barrier At The Western Lowland Gorilla Pit At The Brookfield Zoo On Aug. 19, 1996
Turned out better than it did for Harambe. The boy suffered a broken hand and a gash on his face, and was taken to a hospital without trouble. Binti Jua received attention from the media and was given special treatment for months afterwards.
The difference was the watchers here weren't harassing her. People assumed Harambe was dangerous and were throwing things and yelling at him, which was obviously upsetting him, which was why he then began acting unpredictably and they had to kill him for the safety of the child. If they hadn't interfered and let him remain calm as he was when he first approached the child it might well have ended the same way as this.
Load More Replies...Um.. 'The Zoo' is quite high up on my list of where to know EXACTLY what my 3-year-old is doing. 'A 20-foot Drop' is even higher up that list. Just talkin' about my lists here, folks. I ain't judging. EDIT: Forgot to say that such a wonderful creature shouldn't be kept in a concrete enclosure in some city. It sickens me.
We had an incident at the zoo where our son (probably 2-3 at the time) took off running full speed away from us. We were letting him out of the wagon to walk with us and the second his feet hit the pavement it was like flash. I was watching him 100% of the time when he got away from us. We ran after him but frankly only caught him because he decided to climb in a Photo Booth. He was absolutely out of my sight at points in time (it was along a curved path) and it was terrifying. We immediately left the zoo. I always kept a close eye on him in public because I know he was a fearless little runner. And that increased 10 fold after this. I never let the poor thing further than arms reach from me and I’m sure my grip on his wrist at times made it sore. I’m very thankful he’s six now and doesn’t just dash away anymore. I know what some kids can be like so I try not to judge parents too harshly but I also know that not everyone really watches their kid like I do.
Load More Replies...I'm still super pissed-off about Harambe all due to some dumb bimbo with her nose in her phone and not paying attention to her kid. She should have been fined and locked-up for that.
This was 1996. Not many people had phones and when they did, talking was the only option.
Load More Replies...This is near my home and the zoo we frequent - I remember when this happened. I thought because it had already been worldwide news in the past, it wouldn't happen again and certainly not the way it did with Harambe. I'd say people maybe have learned from it, but since then, there's been some nut job that was stealing animals from a zoo in Dallas who fortunately was caught but said he'd do it again. Sigh.
Another reason why kids should be on leashes. Fortunately not in this case, but it's bordering on immoral when an animal is put down because a naturally inquisitive child got too close. I don't expect it within the range of parental abilities to be attending to a child every single second, which is why a leash comes in handy.
Gorillas do NOT hurt humans - Harambe did NOT need to be killed...humans are the problem as usual
With continued technological improvements and the rapid rise of AI, some people are worried that it will become more and more difficult to differentiate between what’s real and what’s been manipulated. It’s not a baseless fear either, as photo manipulation has become incredibly widespread thanks to social media and easily accessible filters, apps, and photo-editing software. People value aesthetics, but they also love authenticity, whether it’s a modern or historical photo. And it sometimes makes sense to be entirely sure whether a great-looking photo is genuine or a subtly-tweaked montage.
Some people lightly edit their pics, others go way overboard. Though many edited photos are quite easy to spot (you might have learned how to do that while scrolling your Instagram feed), others require an incredibly keen eye and some technological know-how to recognize them.
Harvey Ball And The Smiley Face He Created In The 1960s
Rubbish!! The smiley face was invented by Forrest Gump as shown in the documentary of the same name...
He never made a dime off of it because he didn't trademark/patent, etc. He did it for the insurance company he worked for if I remember correctly

Load More Replies...MUO explains that one of the ways that you can tell if an image has been altered is by looking at the edges. Odds are that if there are jagged edges around the subject in the photo, someone probably used photo-editing software. On the flip side, if the edges around objects like hair or fur are too smooth, this might be another sign that the image has been photoshopped. Zooming in on details can reveal a wealth of information.
Meanwhile, keep an eye out for any reversed text in the pics: the photo manipulator might have forgotten to focus on details like this. Moreover, take a look at the shadows in the image. Photoshopped shadows often look flat. Others might be missing altogether.

Ukrainian Refugees In Germany In 1945
Things are very different. Yes, they are still refugees, but in the 1945 picture, they had just been treated dreadfully and frequently imprisoned by the Nazis. My father-in-law is Ukrainian and his father and uncle both died as Ukrainian POWs in Germany. Comparing that with today's situation where Germany, having learned much from its past, welcomed the Ukrainians with open arms (for the most part).

The Nazis did the same thing to the Jews when the international press was given a dog & pony show of the camps. 6 million Jews died in the Nazi camps & over 5 million non-Jews. Slavs like the Ukrainians would have been considered sub-human by the Nazis. My mother's parents left Ukraine due the Russian persecution of Jews & others. My grandparents were indentured servants to rich Jews. It was the only way to survive the severe poverty the Russians created in Ukraine in 1906. The Jewish families treated them like family & once they came to Canada, the families set them up with jobs & places to live in the US.
My heart hurts for them, being in the worst place now, I pray for them, I would be pleased if Putin had a fatal heart attack, evil man !!!
The same goes for odd or missing reflections and bad perspectives: they suggest that someone might have taken to photoshopping the image, adding, removing, altering, or moving around objects for whatever purpose they had in mind. What’s more, take the time to comb the background and look for ‘cloned’ objects—things that were copy-pasted multiple times to fill in the blank space.
According to How-To Geek, if something like a person’s skin looks too ‘perfect,’ it’s probably been airbrushed to get rid of any ‘imperfections.’ This can give the subject of the photo a strange, uncanny valley sort of feel, as though they’re not a real person.

Dali had spent the years 1936-1939 in Paris, throughout the Spanish Civil War. During the beginning of the Second World War (1940), Dali fled to California with his wife, due to the Fall of France, in which Germany had invaded and captured France. This experience, along with then recent horrors of the Spanish Civil War, inspired Dali to express the misery of Europe through this painting

A very tense historical moment - November, 9th, 1989. Because at that very moment, the border was not really open, with a shooting order still active. A gouvernment official just had - mistakenly - told reporters at a mpress conference that the border was finally open immediately ("ab sofort - ähm - unverzüglich"). So people flocked to the border checkpoint. It could very well have been a massacre instead. Fortunately the local commander in charge decided not to shoot and to open up a checkpoint instead in direct contradiction to his orders. After that, the further developments were not stoppable any more. The reason the border patrol guards are standing ON the wall? They wanted to be safe from being trodden down by the masses. It may sound boring in the history books, but those days were anything but.
Yes, the East German soldiers had absolutely no idea what was happening. Neither did the rest of either country. The East German government had been plagued by demonstrations (Montagsdemonstrationen) and East Germans seeking refuge in the West German embassy in Hungary. The East German government knew they had to take some sort of action and pushed this little know politician (Günter Schabowski) in front of a camera and Egon Krenz handed him a note saying something along the line of the borders being open. Without any further instruction, Schabowski made the 'mistake' of saying "According to my knowledge ... effective immediately without delay). And so people from both sides of the Berlin Wall thought 'only seeing is believing' and effectively stormed and tore down said wall.
Want to add: Schabowski just came from a vacation so he was more or less clueless

Both her and the Northumbria, her sister ship, had a plethora of problems due to poor design and shoddy construction. Minor spills and equipment malfunctions were common. The hull required constant repairs and upkeep, being prone to develop cracks when loaded and subject to seafaring conditions. As you may guess, this is not ideal for an oceangoing ship with a single hull containing 120.000 tonnes of crude. Both the ships were retired after just 12 years, since at that point they were basically floating time-bombs for a major environmental disaster.

Can someone please enlighten me as to why a classical barre chord is necessary to be grabbed as depicted in the photograph, when playing an electric guitar? Don't the chords sound crappy when they are played through, i.e. all 6 strings are played? Weren't Strats and co. developed in such a way that barré frets became relatively superfluous?
Barre chords are still important when playing electric guitar because they allow for different chord voicings, facilitate transposition, offer tone control, and aid in technique development. While some electric guitars have features that make it easier to play certain chords without using a full barre, barre chords are widely used and can produce clean, clear, and musical sounds with practice and proper technique. Also, it’s punk. Sometimes crappy sound is the charm.

Sr 71 Blackbird Designed In The1950s, Was Able To Cruise Near The Edge Of Space And Outfly A Missile
To this day, it holds the records for the highest altitude in horizontal flight and the fastest speed for a non-rocket powered aircraft. For me it is one of the most beautiful engineering designs in history, a kin to the great Art Deco locomotives of the 1930s. "It still looks like something from the future, even though it was designed back in the 1950s," Peter Merlin, an aviation historian and author of "Design and Development of the Blackbird". "Because of the way the fuselage bends and the wing curves and twists, it looks more organic than mechanical. Most conventional airplanes look like someone built them -- this one almost looks like it was grown." 70 years on from its inception the SR 71 Blackbird is a timeless design classic.
Agree that it is the most beautiful aircraft ever designed. Finally got to see one up close at the aviation museum in Oregon. Wanted to be one of the pilots when I was a kid.
Particularly amazing is that it was designed without the aid of any computers.
Also still mostly classified. And if you want really funny, hit YouTube and search for "blackbird pilot"
Is that the anecdote about the BB pilot listening to the other pilots seeking speed readouts from the aircraft control tower? If so, it's beyond funny.

A Wheat Field In Manhattan Showing The Twin Towers
The Public Art Fund hired artist Agnes Denes in 1982 to produce something of artistic worth in Manhattan's Battery Park before high-rises and condos took over the region.
