Here are the photographs I had taken during my trip to Chernobyl. For the people who don't know the history or didn't see the HBO show, the Chernobyl disaster was a nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1986 at the No. 4 nuclear reactor in the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, near the city of Pripyat in the north of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic.

More info: romainveillon.com

It is considered the worst nuclear disaster in history; when technicians at reactor Unit 4 attempted a poorly designed experiment. Workers shut down the reactor’s power-regulating system and its emergency safety systems, and they withdrew most of the control rods from its core while allowing the reactor to continue running.

A shot like this really puts it into perspective. That they HAD so many masks, all just abandoned.

These mistakes were compounded by others, and at 1:23 AM on April 26 the chain reaction in the core went out of control. Several explosions triggered a large fireball and blew off the heavy steel and concrete lid of the reactor. This and the ensuing fire in the graphite reactor core released large amounts of radioactive material into the atmosphere, where it was carried great distances by air currents.

For some reason I love the pics of the amusement park which was never abandoned- because it was never opened.

Technically not quite correct. It was to be opened for the first time on 1 May 1986, in time for the May Day celebrations, but these plans were cancelled on 26 April, when the Chernobyl disaster occurred a few kilometres away. Several sources report that the park was opened for a short time on 27 April before the announcement to evacuate the city was made and one site shows photos of the amusement park in operation.Theories that the park was hurriedly opened in the aftermath of the accident to distract Pripyat residents from the unfolding disaster nearby seem to be substantiated by the fact that some of the rides were never fully completed, the Paratrooper was not fitted with canopies and the Ferris wheel's cladding was incomplete.

the plants, the animals have the power to overcome that nuclear disaster, they adapted, changed, people.... not quite, maybe that is the top of the evolution, that any changing of the environment doesn't allow any permutation, any adaptation, because the human lost the power to adapt

Poor chernobyl, such a thriving city and because of one fatal mistake it was destroyed.

On April 27 the 30,000 inhabitants of Prypiat were evacuated. Since then, the city is abandoned even if nowadays more and more tourists decide to come and explore the remains which are left after that disaster. Here is my view on what's still behind these walls.

I really wish that each of these pictures were identified . So that others less familiar (like myself) would better understand “Where & What”? Exactly we’re looking at.
