26 Photos Of Americans In Their Bedrooms Let Us Take A Glimpse Into Their Private Lives
Barbara Peacock is a successful American commercial photographer based in Portland, Oregon. She has recently started a new project where she aims to photograph the hidden and transparent complexities of who Americans are as individuals and a nation through detailed and intimate portraits taken in the bedrooms across the USA.
The people in her photographs come from different backgrounds – some of them are friends of the author, and others are just strangers who she invites to participate in the project in various ways, for example, on social media or by leaving a card with all the information at local shops. A comfortable room with casual ease and a beautiful view of trees - the mixed patterns carry the mixed colors theme.
At first I thought it was a painting... And a beautiful one!! Not a painting though, but still beautiful
Kitty's look is so judgmental of the couple still sleeping
Load More Replies...I can't sleep with my feet under the covers either no matter how cold it is. Anyone else?
Load More Replies...A bed room that appears to be exactly that - for sleeping.. Although one must judge by only this view - it appears stark with little decorative pop with the wrought iron head borad of simple lines and even the curtains are muted and colors downplayed.
their baby dog is HONGRY! feed him & go back to bed
Load More Replies...Santa has an Airstream... and a cat. He's alright.
Load More Replies...Santa may sleep in cramped quarters but he goes on a world tour every year! May look lonely but has a companion to keep him company.
It appears to be a mobil home where the detail of layout has to do with conserving space, minimal attributes, yet it would be every thing one would need to live with and use of simple or primary forms'
Couldn't agree more! If it was some sort of boat many people who are judgemental here would be praising, when it most likely would be 3 times smaller (my dad loved sailing, I know how cramped they might get, even helped some architects friends design a space saving house based on my experience with boats)
Load More Replies..."Comfort" is the word that comes to my mind on this photo. He has everything he need and is happy
What a beautiful photo and lady. She looks like a model from Renaissance times, same couleur of skin and position as those paintings.
If you don't like the smell cigarettes, don't go over to her house. She doesn't complain about the overwhelming smell of smugness at your place.
Cool chick.... that appears to have hands as feet or am I really high right now
I love this one! Such a great example of a lifestyle so different from what society would call "ordinary" or "commonplace."
The young woman is a distraction to what you are looking at as a "bedroom" - This is a sloppy environment which many might like yet others would find distasteful. It is the essense of making a bed wherever you can find the space with no mind of discarded clothes and towels, remenents or food and drink .
Her quilt brings back fond memories of my Grandma. She made all of her grandkids special ones. I still have mine. I miss her.
My grandmother passed on at 94, ten years ago. She and mama made several quilts together...I gave the last one, the one mama gave me, to my son. Both my children have quilts their great grandma made, and that makes me happy.
Load More Replies...It's the kind of thing you win at one of those fair booths...or someone else wins for you :)
Load More Replies...Snuggling with her dolls and stuffed animals. Still has time to grow up.
I don't know how to feel about this photo . Like a grow up person that didn't had childhood. Hope not the case.
I would want to pop a train track around the bed and run it in the morning to wake him up.
Load More Replies...Probably visiting the family because of the air mattress, Christmas time , nice room.
This makes me happy...family or friend from out of town, being there to celebrate the holidays...
now who's been naughty ? seems to be sleeping on the couch, dunno if santa's bringing him something.
Nope, he wants to go out first and then have his breakfast
Load More Replies...Nice room, relaxed couple enjoying being together and loving their dog, some time, no blankets.
Weirdly demonic from a distance lol then I zoomed in on the suspected demons and they were regular happy folk
Ahh the typical bachelor pad ... but where's the hot plate and empty KD boxes?
I think it's more likely to be a son who hasn't left home!
Load More Replies...An student who loves cats, matters on the floor, struggling to get trough school maybe
You know, it's really too hot for covers but you just want to snuggle.
I am a horrible single male. I never have dirty clothes on my floors.
A lot of elderly wind up living in just one or two rooms of their house due to difficulty getting around, even one level can be exhausting
That is so true. I'm not elderly, but due to my disability I spend nearly all my time in my bedroom. I never go in the lounge, and only go in the kitchen if I really have to. I can totally understand them staying in the same room/s.
Load More Replies...I'm guessing it might be because she has trouble climbing the stairs (if it's a two-storey house).
So depressing, as well as #3 ! All the other pics have light filled rooms , but not the seniors' bedrooms. Are you trying to say that when one reaches their senior years , no light left in their lives ? I'm 68 and i make sure my home and life are filled with light !
Reduced to one word... discarded... but there are hints of another "wilder" life... now just history awaiting a motionless end... spare me from this tragic end and grant her peace
Load More Replies...God love him...widower, very faithful wife...but leaves the reminders of her and her Faith around him to...feel close to her....that's my guess
Maybe he's a devoutly religious man who still lives with his mother and has never married.
Load More Replies...I don't think a priest would have that cover on their bed. Probably a widower.
Load More Replies...If we're guessing, I'd say retired priest. Spare room save some icons of Catholicism (and his shoes!).
If we're making guesses, I'd say retired priest. Spare, surrounded by the icons of Catholicism.
The man is elderly, religious and is accustomed to being neat and orderly. His bedroom is likely in a nursing home.
It reminds me of my father who has been gone quite a while. He was a Baptist, though. But seemed so lonely. :( I went as often as I could, he lived 4 hours away, I worked, had children, single. Sigh....
I'm sorry. Did he have any pets or hobbies? My friend's grandpa was ill and cranky and he just wanted to be left alone and not deal with people...
Load More Replies...Let your freak flag fly, baby! Wow. There is a LOT going on in this room. I'm fascinated by the rainbow keyboard, too.
Its all so creepy but fascinating at the same time. Loving the underwear choice.
I couldn't help but wonder if it had a totally open back
Load More Replies...The classic bedroom that feels like a prison cell look. I was that young once. It'll get better, my friend, trust me.
Thers is an aura of loneliness and perhaps sickness in this somber room with its dark wall only broken by windows with shades. The bed itself looks like a hospital bed and the boy looks weary of being its occupant.
This guy dreams of being a dancer, but his father insists that he become an engineer.
Looks like he's waiting for something to happen or someone, anyone to come and see if he's ok 😇💕
Having worked in a nursing home, here is my suggestion for those of you who want to hug her and be with her: do exactly that!!! So many of these amazing people either have no family or family that lives far away. They want the company! Being a volunteer or even just going to visit them would honest to god make their day.
I've visited people in places like this, relatives of my wife. The mood most of the time is pretty depressing.
Perhaps coming to the end of a long life. Hope she is comfortable.
Retirement homes or nursing homes have small bedrooms for their occupants with nurses to attend and aides to help dress, clean and exercise... it is for many the eventuallity.
Not for me. I plan to off myself before that.
Load More Replies...I feel like this isn't where she'd want to be. It's not where I'd want to be. I hope this isn't representative. I hope her waking hours are full of visits from her family, making her feel loved.
When I was growing up it was just me and my mom. Income would only allow for a one bedroom apartment. Often times I would just share the bed with my mom (really not as creepy as it sounds) because there was no where else to sleep. This picture reminds me of that. Looks like a single parent and child making due with what they have to me.
The Love Story.... With a sense of fun, whacky choices, creating easy to get to spaces in this bedroom, is about a family living with each other.
Such incongruity. Such a heavy masculine bed (almost looks like a camouflage coffin) and it in lies the fairy princess!
That bed looks super comfy .... (I'm talking about the big wooden one, not the 2 on the floor) ;)
Looks like the only person still connected to the world is looking out the window.
She'll be the one to get out and make a better life for herself.
Load More Replies...What fun! Two little ones to play with in the morning... Uh, no, wait! The internet is calling me...
Classic. Both parents staring at their phones while the kids are ignored.
Yes because absolutely every. single. waking. moment. of a parent's day should be devoted to their children. Don't judge. That little boy is listening to something and the little girl seems perfectly content looking out the window. Nothing wrong with Mom and Dad taking a minute to be on their phones. Maybe they're texting the grandparents about the family gathering. Maybe they're making a grocery list. Maybe its playing a game so they can just enjoy a quiet morning before the day goes nuts. Get off your high horse.
Load More Replies...Yes. Looks like they are snug on space. But at least they are together as a family. Important v. insignificant. You do the math.
But they are NOT together as a family! This is what is so wrong about 'families" these days. The parents are distracted and on their phones! The kids look bored and unstimulated, which they probably are! For this to be a good family scenario, there would be no technology - they would be talking, sharing & laughing with each other, or playing games TOGETHER or reading books TOGETHER. So wrong!
Load More Replies...It’s a bit of a sad sight and hopefully not the rule in that household. They seem disconnected, one child already adapted to it and the other seems to still want to be in the outside world. Like I said, hopefully this was just a downtime moment and not the rule.
It looks like tight spaces for a growing family in probably or hopefully a two bedroom apartment (for the moment) where the family is adjusting to the spaces; and the room the parents chose has a stackable washer and dryer in it.
I love the way everyone is judging them for not playing with the kids. I guess My childhood was different. We didn't have cell phones, hell we had a black and white television until I was in 3rd grade and my folks were on TV (news). Nobody dotes on their children constantly and not every child wants their parents attention constantly. The fact that there are two parents there is a blessing. If this makes you mad, get off Bored Panda yourself and play with your own kids.
Puppy is too shy for the camera, please, I haven't had my morning pupcake!
Love the pup. Is this an attic space? Past experience makes me think OMG how hot is this in the summer?
Did she cover her chair from one of her other doggies that went to doggie heaven?
For some people, their jobs make every hotel room their bedroom.
Load More Replies...Plastic headboard all the way to the ceiling , nothing but concrete out the window. Whatever floats your boat! She is into pink!!
We definitely wanna be closing the curtains before any nooky ... or do we.... no we definitely do
Haha isn't that typical...one mate always has to take up 3/4 of the bed so the other is practically hanging off the side.
wow, he's hogging the bed I hate that stay on your own side lmao!
Thinking about someoneelse is shooting these photos, I grow a feeling like all is a setup.
He'd have better luck at a good night's sleep if he would just plug in his CPAP machine.
My thought was that it's plugged in behind the headboard, so the cord isn't a tripping hazard.
Load More Replies...Stop giving kids Mountain Dew!! It's garbage. Use that energy to clean that pig sty.
EVERYONE! Write down what makes you uncomfortable in this photo! Like OCD and stuff! I'm the lampshade, the overlapping bit is driving me crazy!!!
A couch bed that holds pillows and much loved toys for this eclectic senior.
Why are you describing what's going on in every single picture? You do know we can see the pictures, and what's going on in them, by ourselves, right?
Load More Replies...This is the same bedroom we saw with the other single woman. Same walls, same chair. These photos musn't be their own bedrooms. Looks like a selfie taking place.
She's using him as a pillow. He's white with black speckles.
Load More Replies...Don't you want to make up these people's stories? I see this one as working on the novel he is secretly writing, before he goes to work at his bartending job at the cowboy bar.
His romance novel. That he writes under the pen name Elora Jayne.
Load More Replies...Dear diary, today a stranger entered my bedroom and took photographs.
Definitely is a redneck. Some of the best people I know are rednecks. The world needs more of them. : )
Load More Replies...Smoking + bed = fire. He's a tragedy waiting to happen. And no Marine would leave his home so filthy.
At least it was a smiley face and not a winking one. That would be worse lmao
Load More Replies...Now is the kiddo taking a pic of the photographer? That's cute!
I am SO happy there are kid/s books on the bed and he's getting to wear dad's T-shirt.
He's wearing Dad's t-shirt.. I love this.. I remember wearing my dad's t shirts to bed when I was a kiddo too.
Looks like Moms asleep and Dads about to have a coronary attack because little junior took his phone and might see something he shouldn’t or better yet mommy wakes up and sees something she shouldn’t!
I am a girl, and I had toy six shooters as a kid in the early 70's. My dad was a pacifist (saw the destruction in Japan after WWII and it changed him) but he wasn't opposed to having a firearm for protection in the home (although we didn't, too poor for a handgun).
I wonder if the boy is autistic. My son loved to sleep in his closet, toy, clothes, junk and all. It made him feel safe.
Insert random life affirming non offense comment about youth and childhood. Agree by proxy until another offers a slightly different non offense comment. Allow third person to disagree with first two commenters..or just drink enough red bull till your hair hurts
After viewing all these bedrooms I now feel like I live in a castle and have been totally blessed.
Just want to get away from the political crud for a bit, can we just enjoy the pics? I remember when my 20 year old was that little girl's age. I miss that pure innocence of little ones.
A children's bedroom, overflowing with things to occupy its inhabitants and beds according to the sizes of the children.
I really like this series of pictures! Too bad there's only 27, I could have scrolled through these for hours :P
The ones of older people are fascinating and sad. So much history that maybe only they will remember
The first photo made me feel so sad. This looks like a mature woman without resources living on a minimal income.
Load More Replies...The sheer amount of accent furniture that is the same from pic to pic makes it clear these are all staged, and not well. See the "antique" nightstand in several pics, the leopard chair, etc. These aren't real, which is a real shame. Great pics, but not authentic.
I couldn't find the leopard chair more than once (the second time is just another photo of the same person in the very same room) but I definitely see that antique nightstand at least twice, and maybe even one of the dressers.
Load More Replies...Most of these photos speak clearly of poverty and desperation. The contrast with the luxury of the others is especially jarring.
Really great images. Compositions are engaging. and I love the use of natural light. Five Gold Stars.
The mess and clutter in most of them made me feel like I'm a damn good housekeeper.
