For many years I enjoyed working as a portrait photographer, but it was never totally satisfying. It was all about poses, make up, lighting. It just wasn’t personal, it wasn’t an emotional experience. So, in order to create a balance of sanity and artistic experience, I decided to step out onto the streets, and photograph people as they really are. AT first it was frightening. I was used to being in control, telling people what to do, how to stand etc. Now I had to search for and create an emotive experience that was totally unrehearsed. I started sitting in a café where I felt safe and unnoticed, and then as I gained confidence I moved out onto the streets, in search of the human expression, the nature of ourselves.
