In the series “Pandemia – Um Rio de vazios”, Brazilian photographer Sergio Fonseca portrayed the emptying of the city of Rio de Janeiro during the isolation caused by the covid-19 pandemic. Second most populous capital and one of the main tourist destinations in Brazil, the Marvelous City was left with practically deserted streets.
“The soul of Rio is not just in its beautiful landscapes, on the contrary. The soul of my city is the people. In these pandemic times, the city is different. I cycle around looking for images of this ‘enchanting soul of the streets’, as the chronicler João do Rio used to say at the beginning of the 20th century. All images were produced on weekdays in an apparently deserted Rio. However, as the contemporary writer and historian Luiz Antônio Simas asks, ‘who said that the street is empty?’.”
Sergio Fonseca is a freelance photographer. In 1998, he was one of the creators of the website Photosynthesis, the first Brazilian photography portal.
