Person Has Had Enough Of Influencers Treating Public Spaces Like Their Private Studio, Dedicates Vacation To Ruining Their Photos
You should take everything that you see on social media with a grain of salt. Heck, you know what? Bring a salt shaker with you!
What some people don’t realize is that it takes a lot of time, not to mention photo-editing, to take an impressive photo for your Instagram account, say when you’re traveling abroad. A lot of it is staged; very few photos are taken ‘in the moment.’ And these extended photo sessions can be a bit of a headache for the locals, as well as the other tourists.
Redditor u/creatingastorm started up an interesting thread on the r/pettyrevenge subreddit after sharing how they kept interrupting wannabe models’ photoshoots while on holiday. Scroll down for their story, as well as other redditors’ similar experiences. What do you think of this approach, dear Pandas? What do you think of social media influencers monopolizing beautiful locations for their photos? Share your thoughts in the comments.
There are few things more annoying than wannabe social media influencers dominating the area with their lengthy photoshoots

Well, there are those who are fighting back! One person explained how they dealt with these influencers and models while on vacation

The author of the post hit the nail on the head when they said that everyone has a right to be there and take pictures. However, the so-called ‘Instagram wannabe models’ “don’t have more of a right than anyone else.”
They were actively dominating the tourist areas for the sake of their social media photoshoots which is why the redditor decided to have some fun and interrupt what they’re doing. The post resonated with a lot of people and went viral. At the time of writing, it had 21.8k upvotes, as other redditors shared their similar experiences with invasive influencers.
There are a variety of reasons why people want to take gorgeous photos to post on their social media accounts. Some travel bloggers actually get paid to do this. Others do this because they genuinely enjoy travel. Others, still, aim to impress their fans and gather an even-larger online following. People are social animals and they enjoy being adored, respected, and looked up to.
As such, some individuals spend huge amounts of time curating their online personas. However, quite a few take it to unhealthy extremes. They want to be seen as extremely attractive. But, often, no matter how much attention you get, it’s never enough. So they might take to photoshopping to the extreme.
A while back, the moderators from the r/Instagramreality subreddit explained to Bored Panda that there’s a universal demand to be loved, desired, and to feel like you belong.
“The harsh, scary truth of the matter for anyone is that the more you resemble what people around you consider universally attractive, the more likely you are to have access to those things in your life,” they told us earlier.
“So, you begin to think, ‘Well, what do I need to change about myself to fit in? How do I become more attractive?’ Based on what magazine covers and many an Instagram Explore page shows you, that image is a tall, long-haired, fair-skinned woman with smooth skin, a slim yet hourglass figure—oh, and don’t forget, the perfect butt. In comes photo editing apps, offering you the chance to finally be her. Even if it’s only online.”
Meanwhile, during another interview, Bored Panda spoke about social media addiction with Nuno Albuquerque, the Head of Treatment for the UK Addiction Treatment Group
“A person can be addicted to anything, but they are only suffering an addiction if whatever it is they are ‘using’ has taken over their lives, and that they as individuals have lost the power of choice, i.e. that they cannot, regardless of how much they want to, stop ‘using’. This is the effect that addiction has, it robs the individual of the ability to stop,” he explained to us.
“Even if that individual is aware of the negative physical, psychological, or financial consequences, they still cannot stop. It is essential to not use the word ‘addiction’ flippantly; if a person is addicted, then they are in need of professional help and support.”
During the Covid-19 pandemic, people tended to spend more time on social media while they wre locked down. “Some people turned to social media during the lockdown to stay connected with others, which is really important and actually a healthy approach to take. Where it starts to negatively affect a person is when being on social media consumes them completely, and they no longer want to be present in their actual ‘offline’ day,’” the mental health expert told us.
Here’s what some people had to say after reading the viral post
Quite a few internet users shared their own photobombing stories
They are the skidmark of the human species, with their "I want free stuff" and how the world is meant to stop for them and their photo taking opportunities.
Guess I'm just an old crank, but I don't really get this whole "influencer" phenomenon anyway. I took my photos then used photoshop to remove the people. Problem solved. The photos were so good I got them framed and hung them in my house. Love his work!
Chihuly is amazing! I bet those photos all turned out so awesome. Seriously, those Google phones advertise how they can remove entire people with one tap of your finger so all these wanna be models need to chill.
Load More Replies...I love the fact that some places have started to push back. If you are doing photo shoots without prior authorization from the establishment, you are removed and banned. If you are a tik-tok or "influencer" asking for a discount or free meal/stuff, the price just doubled. Enough of this entitled BS!
The word/title "influencer" makes me throw up a little bit in my mouth...
I do the same. If I see people taking regular pics I wait for a few seconds until they're done. If that's some influencer posing s**t I don't give a f**k.
When i recently went to an insanely pretty 'sunset view' in arizona, we saw a ton of influencers. My family and i kept wanting to take pictures, but there were 3 influencers that took photos for almost an hour straight in the same spot, not letting anyone else get in. However, there was one girl who asked us if she could take a photo in front of where we were sitting, and was in and out in a minute. That is how people should do it!
I wholeheartedly support her. These "influencers" do not care about getting a photo/video at a cool place as a memory: they aren't even noticing it. They just want their shot for the 'gram or some other social media site. They aren't enjoying the location.
People have become so self centered. If you're reading this stop being so self centered. Be considerate and aware of others everywhere you go. Don't block the aisle in the grocery store, be aware of your surroundings.
My friend and I got to go to Japan. Now, her office had a bunch of rubber monsters for mascots, and about 2-3 years prior people started taking them on vacation with them. They had their own photo albums of the exotic locations they'd visited. So we, of course, had one with us. My friend wanted one of the thing in front of Osaka Castle, so I got up to take photos at 7:30 AM, so I wouldn't bother anyone,as they needed a slightly longer exposure. (It turned out great, BTW.) The fun part was trying to explain to an old Japanese man what I was doing. My Japanese, to be polite, is rudimentary! But he was enchanted. Yes, Americans really ARE crazy. He had a wonderful story to tell at home.

LOL! I used to work with a guy in Florida who called the "visitors" that same name!

Or only disposable or old cameras. So people actually wanting memories will go, and influencers won't be able to
Load More Replies...Could be worse. I used to work near Pioneer Square in Seattle. Walking back from lunch one day, I had a big guy approach me and insist, "You can't walk here, we're filming a car commercial!" Pretty sure this is a public sidewalk, buddy... you don't own it, and you're hours away from even having the cameras set up! No, he didn't succeed in intimidating me into taking the long way back to work.
Going anywhere touristy, please remember that people, in fact, also live and work there. Don't be a trashy pest, who nearly constantly inconveniences others. That goes double for when you're driving in the area. Lost or sightseeing? Stay the hell out of the passing lanes and/or pull over and get the hell out of the way.
I teach English as a second language, mostly on Zoom since COVID happened. I had a student once who claimed to be an influencer. Dude could barely speak a word of English, and he wouldn't follow my instructions or do his homework. He just talked and talked in very broken English about how much money he had and his two sports cars and his huge house. I kept insisting that he do his homework and one day he just went berserk on me. Started screaming about he was a millionaire and an influencer and that he didn't take orders from anyone because HE was the one who gave the orders. Ranted at me for ten minutes then said he was too pissed off to continue with his class. I told my boss what happened and she said he was the most difficult client she'd ever had to deal with. We made fun of him for weeks. The only thing this clown influenced me to do was laugh until I pooed my shorts.
Tell me you post on Reddit without telling me you post on Reddit 😂
Load More Replies...What the aitch is an influencer anyway? It's the most pointless and useless occupation anyone could try to attain and if that's your goal in life then heaven help you. Just knowing what you are means I wouldn't consider anything you're pushing. Rather like ads you see a zillion times. Waste of fake space.
Influencer: someone who wants to get paid for not working, thinks far too highly of themselves, looks down on others, and expects (free) service at the snap of their fingers.

We just avoid town if possible as it's so frustrating trying to get past thousands of goggle eyed tourists with their phones out taking up the whole path/road. At least working from home means it's easier to avoid!
I go out and take a lot of photos and people are generally very nice to me. I’m actually the opposite of the social media crowd. When people stop to let me get the shot, I tell them, “please go ahead, I can get my shot without inconvenience to you”. Every one has smiled and said thank you.
One time I was in the school bathroom and there was these girls doing a TikTok in the bathroom. Their phone fell in the sink.
Gym influencers are a joke. They set up their equipment, taking up so much space (which means taking valuable real estate for those who pay membership to be there to workout), fo their thing and leave. No workout - but they sure paint the picture on social media like they do!
"Influencers" (legends in only their own mind) need to get a life. I watched some twit climb up on a pillbox at the top of Diamond Head in Hawaii. Signs are clearly posted to not climb on top. I watched her fall and crack her head open on the concrete. I'm pretty sure she head me say "I guess that's why they post signs to not climb on top."
People tell me to move I always so nope and I stay right where I am. Deal with it. Get in my face and your gonna regret.it.
Tell. Automatic "nope". That might cause me to slow down, fix my bra strap, straighten my underwear, grab a railing for some streeeeetchiiinnngggg … Ask me like I’m a human and I’m a lot nicer.

You put a stop to that I hope (by complaining to the restaurant who then told the woman to stop). If you didn't, then you let her win and this will just continue.
Load More Replies...Oddly enough, I live in a touristy area (Long Island, NY) and have never once seen influencers trying to get a shot. My neighbor across the street, however, is a YouTuber. She does elaborate nail designs and creates beautiful artwork for both indoor and outdoor spaces. She films all of her content on her own property, no encroaching on public spaces. Now I'm curious to see them roaming about just so I can jump into their shot and make some Jim Carrey faces.
I can't believe the amount of people who take photos of art or that galleries even allow it. When you have thousands of people doing it every day, flash photography can degrade very old paint which is often made with natural substances like egg and plants. And your s****y photo won't look good. Like, are you going to flick through those photos and remember the art? Buy a professionally photographed postcard or art book or something
I would ask to see their permits for filming and closing off public property. They would come from the city and usually the fire or police department. Of course the answer will be no as those entities would have blockades in place for them. So yeah...a couple shots, sure..a whole photo shoot and everyone else has to do without... no.
You get one. One picture. No pic-check-pic. One. After that it's my sidewalk to walk on wherever I need to go.
Whenever I can, I photo bomb people's shots making the goofiest faces I possibly can. There must be hundreds of pictures of me out there. I love it.
British slang directly from the Arabic. It's insulting and very much not used in polite language. It means daughter. Please don't use it. It's rude and vulgar the way it's used in English.

It's the one time of the year there isn't kids in the park (mostly) at the night events. I asked if he got in the shots. He's 6' so I'm assuming so. I would have just said random words like pepperoni. Or pineapple over their shoulders. So annoying.
No, you start singing a tune that would cause the video to get taken down for copyright violation.

She was "using" the leg press by putting weights on it, putting her feet against the plate, taking a selfie, getting up again, adding more weight, and repeating. I didn't want to upset her by asking her to stop, and it was almost fascinating to watch someone go to that much trouble to lie.
We all know it takes effort, Jonas. We just don't give a s**t. I hope more influencers are disrupted and society has to contend with low IQ losers who can't hold any type of job.
It's that that they *can't* hold down a job, it's that they think they're too important to have to. "Oh, look, someone's following me. I'm *important*." Me, if they're following me, I wonder if they're nuts!

I work in tourism and always walk through people's shots. I didn't used to but they just take too effing long. They can continue shooting once me and my guests are gone. Life is too short to endlessly wait for pictures that usually will never be looked at, again.
In the past they were using cameras that needed film. Film is finite and costs money. These days they only have to worry about having enough memory in their phone/camera so they just keep going and going.
Load More Replies...Yea influencers are beyond annoying, but why would you waste your time by being passive aggressive when you could just ignore them and enjoy your vacation. Like why focus on trivial things that p**s you off, when you can just not. Maybe it's cause I see so many of these influencers where I live, but if I had the chance to visit another country, I wouldn't spend it ruining their dumb lil photos abafshvkdkd
So if you go to another country, and one is blocking what you want to see, you just won't go there to avoid pissing off an influencer? Because that's what you just said.

I went to Greece recently and the only pictures of me from that trip are ones other people took lol. I was a little more focused on what was around me.
I feel like I must be the only person in the world who hasn't encountered influencers. Or if I have, they weren't rude enough for me to notice.
You're allowed to take pictures, but if you're being rude- rude is what you'll get in return
I live in Florida. Watched an idiot trying to get a perfect shot with an Alligator sunning on the opposite bank of the river from the dock he was standing on. He kept backing up until he ran out of dock and fell in the water. Then he panicked and swam out of the water while screaming for help. The alligator never moved, it was busy getting some sun.
Just who are these morons "influencing"? 🙄 These people are worse than the annoying coworker who has to show you 500 pictures of their vacation/grandchildren/ etc. Just STOP.
I'd rather see the pictures of the grandchildren. At least *those* people have a reason to brag--even if it got old three years ago.
Load More Replies...I have to admit that I've been on both sides of this issue. Sometimes you lose track of where you are and wind up photobombing others by accident. Taking great pictures should also include understanding that others want to do the same. Accidents happen. But those people don't whine at bystanders that "you're ruining my important shot!"

I live in Czech Republic. Prague and Krkonose national park is *full* of ppl that think they own the place. Not only insta heros but groups that walk 4-5 persons wide so anyone else needs to dodge them on the sidewalk / trail. The segway and scooter idiots are also a nicety to have. High speed cluelessness, frequent near- and full collisions - and you need to be careful not to fall over those things once they don't need them anywhere. Parked or simply thrown down anywhere at their convenience. Conclusion: the problem is not the photo or scooter. It is the selfishness of those people.
We had a group of teens hit by a car. Why? "Because they were walking 5 abreast, and the sidewalk was too small", so they were walking in the WINTER street--out further to avoid the slush at the side. So it was the town's fault, because they don't make their sidewalks wide enough, and only shovel them so that two people can pass each other. Lady, give me strength!
Load More Replies...I walk right through these impromptu photo shoots all the time. I don't care if I ruin your shot seeing as how you don't care that your blocking a public space with your never ending picture taking.
Idk about all this... I mean yeah it's no secret that "influencers" are overly dominating social media. However, being rude and petty just to make it harder for them to do their thing is nothing more than petty. It's not "petty revenge," it's just plain old petty with a dash of ridiculousness.
Especially when they're not inconveniencing anyone else in any way. As long as they're not in anyone's space, it's no one's business how they act in public. Doing weird things is no excuse to punish someone.
Load More Replies...I got nothing against influencers till they start acting self entitled, like they own the place with bit of narcissistic personality thrown in. Which is what a lot of them turn into. I can respect someone trying to succeed online abd widsj them good luck, just don't lose your soul into it and turn into bad people.
There's another way to go about it. I've been shooting my wife in her wedding dress since before the term influencer existed. We were in a long line for a phot op in Brazil. We made friends with the people around us, they did my wife's hair. I offered to take photos of them, did and sent them to them. Without a strong flash, the sun was in the wrong place to get a good shot. So, it worked out for all. Key thing about photography is interaction.
The condo complex I lived in had a nice pool. An influencer started live streaming while I was in the pool. Went onto the background and shook my head and gave a things down. She got up and left the pool area.
The very first time I encountered a family "hogging" a site with too many photos (happened to be a cave tour), I had had enough by the 3rd cave room. I just ignored them going forward. I would like to think that's what everyone has always done, but they must not have if we need to hear "special" stories about how people stood up to or ignored or otherwise disallowed rude people from being rude by hogging some site. If we let the rude people win, guess what? They win! So, don't let them win from the get-go. Pointing out and not accepting rudeness is never, ever, ever in itself rude.
This is why I fear taking any pictures at all ever when out. I'm worried someone is going to assume I'm an influencer and not just a rock bottom non-existant self esteem sufferer. Or worse, I will see something, get lost in it for just enough time my husband pulls out the phone camera and starts spam photo taking before I notice him and make him delete them all....
There were these two idiots taking insta photos at chimney bluff once that I thought were going to fall off and die. I thought about asking for the handle of the "model" so I could report them to the park police but ended up not doing it. Kind of regret it.
Oh yeah- drivers in touristy places. When my kids were young I took a weekday women’s tele (skiing) class at the local mountain. I had enough time to change and drive back down the mountain to pick them up from school- UNLESS- tourists decided they should NOT avail themselves of convenient pullouts to let the growing line of cars pass. Locals were going to, coming home from work, picking up their kids, making deliveries … why don’t tourists realize that? It’s a well populated area. There are stoplights just as you get to town- I know I’m not the only person who did this … if I stopped next to the logjam car I’d politely signal them to open their window. I’d explain we live here, have someplace to be and they just added 20 min or doubled our commute. Invariably I’d get some form of "slow down- enjoy it. It’s so beautiful!" It’s been awhile since I’ve driven down the canyon but I still can see every twist & turn. I had it memorized. Did I mention they rode their brakes too?
Most people are morons. Ask me to move so you can get the perfect shot, and I'll say "f**k you and everyone with you". Really, that's the kind of sumbitch I am.
One of the problems is digital cameras. They make monopolizing an area for extended amounts of time too easy. If they were still using film they'd make sure they paid for a permit to block things off if they were going to shoot for that long because of the cost of film. Digital cameras should be making this quicker and easier for many reasons but instead some people just take more and more photos.
I work at a state nature area and I do this. If they're taking photos of the kids, fine. Bur if they start getting stupid with it, excessive posing and whatnot, i walk right through them, and keep doing it til they leave. You look stupid.
Everyone should follow this example! This “influencer” fad has got to fade. Quickly.

This is so funny bc I've seen SOOOOOO many girls at school recording tiktoks in the bathroom (especially last year) and my urge do destroy it and photobomb it has been spectacularly huge (once they did it outside where EVERYONE was. It was so annoying cuz ppl don't like being recorded, so do I, and most, if not all, didn't notice!)
I was standing at one of the infinity pools at the WTC Memorial. To one side of me, a couple of noisy tourists posing with selfie sticks. To my other side, a woman holding her hand on the engraved name of someone who died on 9/11, in quiet agony. I couldn't have hated our species more that day.
I can see letting them get a few photos but don't hog the space, and don't disrespect whatever situation is going on... Saw one influencer dancing at a ridge lookout, As a forest fire that killed people and took homes burned behind her happy face and movements. Plus for appropriate photos there are ai powered editing tools that can literally edit live vid. And make or erase things in pictures....
Chernobyl. There are photos of on asinine 'influencer, who took off her protective suit so she could pose before the ruined plant in the underwear she was flogging. I have hopes SO bad... Rude, insensitive and downright*stupid* only begins to describe what I think.

Everyone waiting to capture their soecial moment. WTF? Even worse, few of those there were dressed for a hike and better-suited and prepared for a trip to the mall; not a demanding hike in the desert. IMO only a small handful of the hikers were truly there to "experience" the joy of nature.
I'm not sure which is more deplorable. The passive-aggressiveness of haters intentionally trying to infringe on someone else's hustle (when they them selves probably contribute even less to society). Or the objectively annoying influencers. I'm just gonna say they both disgust me.
Contrarian alert: Not a fan of psuedo-influencers, either, but people who can't cordially oblige to get their gormless a*s out of the way of the perfect shot are a worse tax on society. You're likely some combination of fat/old/unattractive/unsuccessful, and thereby have nothing to offer in counter to what these nonfluencers are attempting to do, so you do not (and shouldn't) inherently have more entitlement to the airspace filling my photo's frame. Just do a favor and step 5 to the side already! Geez.
THIs "Karen" needed to be B***H SLAPPED, maybe THIS "it's All About Me" hoe would "Get The Hint" and get out of the "Shot"! Just Saying that there ARE "Alternative Options"!
Unpopular opinion I guess: if you can't wait 5 minutes for someone to take a few photos to make sure they actually got a good one (no blinking, no out of focus, etc) then that sounds like a you problem. It's different if they're actually taking up time and blocking people but most "wannabe influencers" aren't like that. If you're in a tourist-y place where you know everyone wants photos and you keep them from taking them, you're the AH not them. Also before anyone thinks I'm one of them, no, I don't even want my family to see me taking a selfie.
You expect people to wait 5 f**ing minutes to get up to be able to see some attraction when on a tour just so they can get some photos of whatever thing you are looking at that has 100s or 1000s of photos already online for the taking? You are joking, correct? So, you're on vacation, let's say there are 20 spots to stop and view something in a given day. You think someone should be okay with waiting 5 minutes to walk up, 20x a day for 100 minutes of unnecessary waiting in a given day. No, that is not acceptable. If the only reason you can't just walk right up to the attraction is some influencer hogging the place like they own it, then it's not okay. (If there are crowds, and you're waiting 5 minutes just to take your turn, that's okay of course.)

I remember going on a cave tour and every new room we went into, this Mom and her two daughters would walk right up to the interesting part, park themselves and take selfies until almost time to move into the next room so that nobody else could get a good look. After about the 3rd room, I guess I became "petty" in that I would get up there before them if I could, took the usual time to look before I moved back to let other people in. If they got there first, I'd wait the requisite amount of time, then just walk up and stand very close to them as if I were part of their party. They were rude, I was not. And it was not petty. I just really wanted to see the cave I driven a long way to see.

Many apologies from the guy in the bright yellow ball cap who may be in the background of many an awesome landscape or waterfall photo.
