Photo Group Donates Solar Lights To People Living In Darkness

I travel the world bringing photo enthusiasts to remote places where we document the local people’s way of life. I always try to stress to the group that we should see what they have, and not contemplate what they don’t have. So many of these rural indigenous people light their huts with kerosene lanterns which emit toxic fumes. The tribes of the Omo Valley in Ethiopia have no electricity, no candles, and no lanterns – they live in darkness once the sun sets. When I ask the people in their villages what is one of the things that could most change their life, they all say “Light”. These people live life according to sunrise and sunset. My gift to them are solar lights. These lights extend the day which allows them to prepare meals when the men come home from the fields after sunset, and businesses to stay open longer. Kids are able to do schoolwork after 4pm during most of the year in rural Myanmar now that they have light. Over the course of the last 5 years, I have been able to donate over 400 lights thanks to donations made by people to EpicPhotoTours.

I get the lights from mpowerd and solight design. They have been kind enough to sell them to me for $10 each. Mpowerd has a rep in New Delhi who got me me 100 for $7.00. I will be bringing solar lights to the tea plantation workers in Munnar India in mid May.
