I Just Adopted My First Cat! Everyone, Please Say Hello To "Nick Fury", Or "Fury" For Short! He's Had A Rough Little Life On The Street, But Now He Has A Nice Warm Home!
Since it’s that time of the year, we can’t help but think about the little puppies and kittens crawling out of the gift boxes. However, there’s a never-ending dialogue about pet adoption during the holidays. Various animal welfare organizations have policies against it since many think that cats and dogs that weren’t chosen by their new owners will not be seen as valuable.
Before you decide to adopt, there are plenty of factors to take in, both positive and negative. Needless to say, getting a pet as a gift is a dream come true for many. One of the benefits of taking in a pet during Christmas is that most of the family members have a few days off from school and work, so there’s extra time to get familiar and ease the transition of adoption. Also, there’s the fact that saving a pet will make more room for another neglected four-legged creature at the shelter.

What’s more, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) highly encourages people to adopt a four-legged friend during the holidays. According to their survey of more than 200 individuals, there is no increased risk of abandonment of dogs and cats that were received as a gift.
When asked if obtaining a pet on holidays increased, decreased, or had no impact on the attachment to the pet, almost all participants said it either increased or had no impact. Plus, 86 percent of cats and dogs adopted during the holidays were still in the home.
The researchers wrote that “denying adopters who intend to give the animals as gifts may unnecessarily impede the overarching goal of increasing adoptions of pets from our nation’s shelter system.”

Unfortunately, when reality sets in, some animals unavoidably get returned to the shelter. Holiday celebrations can be quite chaotic and our emotions often get heightened, so there are a few things to consider before making this step. First, make sure that the receiver of this gift really wants a pet and that they will be able to look after their basic needs and medical care.
Some people might be planning to travel during the holidays and if this is the case, it would be better to adopt after the festivities, during a less hectic time when everybody could turn their attention to the new family member.

Shirt Warmer. He's Just Sooo Happy To Be Adopted Still!
Previously, we spoke to Kelly DiCicco, Adoptions Promotions Manager at the ASPCA, who told us that adopting a pet should not be a spur-of-the-moment decision: “It should be expected that you’ll experience lifestyle changes over the course of the pet’s life, such as moving, having children or getting a new job, so it’s important to consider how you will care for your pet during those changes before you add that pet to your family; many shelters offer various forms of support to answer questions you might have before you adopt, or afterward.”

She added: “We always encourage adopters to keep an open mind and heart when visiting a shelter or rescue; as you may walk out with a pet you’d never considered before, like a senior animal or an animal who looks nothing like what you originally had in mind.” And if you have any kind of doubts, you could try fostering. Taking in a homeless dog or cat into your home until they are adopted will still let them know that there is someone who will give them the care and love that they deserve.

However, if you’re a hundred percent sure about adopting, remember that a pet is not just for the holidays, but for the rest of its life. According to the ASPCA, as you go through lifestyle changes, your animal will remain a permanent part of your life. Make sure that you will be able to care for your pet no matter the circumstances.

Your personality and lifestyle also play an important role in determining which pet is best suitable for you: “Research different breeds and ask shelter staffers for guidance—they’re experts at making perfect matches!” And lastly, when you've found your new furry friend, check your home and make it safe and ready for them to arrive. “That includes keeping toxic foods, pet-unfriendly plants and dangerous household items out of paw’s reach,” ASPCA recommended.

One thing most of us can definitely agree on—there’s nothing more wholesome and heartwarming than hearing stories about rescued pets and the kind-hearted people who took them in. Sadly, we can’t adopt them all, but we can at least look at the ones who already found their forever homes and get to live the life they truly deserve.

My husband and I only adopt elderly dogs. We had 4 in 2019. We have one 15 yr old left. It's very hard on us emotionally and sometimes financially but every animal deserves a loving safe home. We're going to wait a little bit before we adopt again. Our old guy is being tested for cancer on Thursday and I'm really anxious.
I’m really sorry :( hope it goes well! It’s great that you’ve given them a second chance! <3
Load More Replies...We got our guy back in April. He spent the first 4yrs of his life in a trailer with 80 other dogs. We have a fenced yard and everything was new, grass, butterflies, snow. Still has a ways to go but not a mean bone in his body and once we are able to finally get a leash on him and take him for walks his wee doggy mind will be blown.
I could serve this thread with two guinea pigs this month: last week a rescued lady for our mixed group and a castrated baby boy for our boar group yesterday. Sadly, we also lost a piggy a week ago :( R.I.P. little Oskar
As someone who doesn't Show feelings often this is the right place for me to show up happy tears.
My sister adopted a cat from Bulgaria this year (we live in the UK). He had been deliberately hit by a vehicle as he was a street cat. His injuries were horrific. He had one eye that had ruptured, the other just popped out of his socket which was fractured. He also had a broken jaw. He was a big orange tabby so he was called Garfield. My sister saw him on a Facebook post and immediately wanted to adopt him. She contacted the charity who was taking care of Garfield and did a Zoom interview. Because of Garfield's injuries he had to have his eyes removed rendering him blind. Luckily my sister had previous experience of caring for a blind cat. She passed her Zoom interview with flying colours and was supposed to receive Garfield in Dec 2020 but due to travel restrictions she couldn't get him until April this year. She drove across the UK to collect him and he's such a cuddle bug. He's adorable and has even caught a rat in the garden despite being blind!
That's adorable. :) We also adopted a blind kitty from Greece but he was born blind. Always great to see how well he gets along with everything. The only thing he doesn't really like is wind. Evil thing that "touches" him without permission! :)))
Load More Replies...I really needed this today. All the beautiful pets and people, really lifted me up. That, and my baby cat Lloyd snuggling me till almost lunchtime. Thanks to everyone who rescues.
Is it too late to add a shot of my rescue Chataro? He turned up in our driveway about 7 years ago, closer to death's door than I ever want to be. Nursed him back to health, and he's become the love of my life. I can't begin to tell how much happiness he bring into my life. Cha_30_40-...d84370.jpg
He's gorgeous er, very handsome. Yes, pets steal our hearts in such good ways.

I have a black barn cat who acts as a panther. He constantly brings me dead mice and rats from the fields around us. I adopted him when I saw that he was rescued from a really bad situation. Abandoned and crying on top of his dead brothers body. His name is buster.
I live in a tiny NorCal Mtn town of 1k...we have RAIN (Rescued Animals In Need) a Cat Rescue Thrift Store & Adoption Facility. I stopped to get a buddy for my Rescue...SHE actually Rescued me and I was told they had over FOUR Hundred Kittens this year & could have doubled that. 🥺 People dump pets, Dogs, Cats up here, I even found a Tortise once, up here thinking they'll survive "in the wild". If they aren't killed on Hwy 44, die of exposure or eaten by our multitude of Wildlife, they end up producing more unwanted babies. My own Miss Muffin was one of a quartet of Mama & three babies someone dumped. Her Mama & siblings were saved the day before but Muffy ran off. At 10wks she weighed less a pound, had severe chest/eye infections. PLEASE...If you aren't willing to Commit...Spaying, Shots etc...Don't Get! PLEASE support organizations that shelter pets & if you're in Shingletown...stop by RAIN...say hi to the Kitties & support their efforts, or do the same in YOUR town.✌🙏
When my elder cousin died from a mix of diabetes and drug use, the only thing I wanted was her black cat Jedi (17 years old) her ex husband took him and I was like no he needs him to recover. About a month later he was forced to move and couldn't find an animal friendly place. He brought him to my aunt. A few days later she called my mom worried she would have to send him to the pound and mom said I would excitedly take him. So my aunt rushed to us with him. I opened his cage and sat with him while mom and aunt unloaded the car. She had just before I opened the cage warned me he would hide for a while, but when she came back in he was curled up on my lap purring loudly while I pet him. It was like he finally found me. He lived another 5 years, the same year I married my husband he went down fast. Made me cry when he had to be put down. Since then we adopted two male kitties, I bought a flemmish Giant rabbit and made the kid cry that one of his rabbits was not going to be eaten.
Six years ago I adopted a orange kitten my son named Easter. Earlier this year I adopted a 4 year old Cattle Dog mix who came with the name Bonnie. My foster mother, who died from cancer 15 years ago, name was Bonnie. Easter is my cuddly buddy & Bonnie is my son's cuddly buddy. So in love with both of them. I hope they become close friends soon.
We adopted several puppers and cats over time. Each one had its own personality and though from time to time they act out. Comes with the territory. But we love them all just the same. Our newest addition is a tortoise haired trainwreck named Choloe ..
First I had one cat, then a boyfriend came in with a cat which mine got along with so well. When he moved out, I got another one. Then, a street cat showed up in my backyard. I found his owners, then got a call from the shelter the next day. His people told them he was a stray. I was like this is my cat now. At the same time new boyfriend (now fiance) brought his cat. We have 4 now, it's a lot 😅 (of work and fun)
We adopted a 12yo jack russell by the look of him he had had a hard time of it!. I said if we could give him a good life for as long as we had him then I would be happy. He lasted another three well loved, well fed happy years. So we were happy that we adopted him. I just couldn't resist his funny face, loved him to death, still miss him.
Do not go to a cat show, if you cannot have a cat ind your home. I went to one once, and passing I heard a man explain, that he did not want a cat. I smiled inwardly, because he had a kitten on his shoulder, that clearly wanted to be with him. When I passed that way again, he was writing a check, still with the kitten on his shoulder.
ok so we buy young dogs because we don't want this stuff to happen to them but we adopted an old guy 8 years later he passed to pancreatitis and a collapsing Tricia
