There’s always something people have demonized. First it was fat, then it was food additives, and lately it has become sugar. But things people see as evil don't end with our diet.
Other commonly disregarded stuff may have to do with music, like the controversial band known as Nickelback or going to psychological therapy, or not liking animals like rats, tarantulas, and snakes.
We rarely reflect on why specific things cause us such adverse emotions, so this viral thread may give us some perspective. The simple yet thought-provoking question “What doesn't need the hate it gets?” was asked by Redditor u/Alexdoesthedo, and it has clearly produced some very illuminating responses.

The rain. Rain is f**king awesome. It feeds all the plantlife, makes puddles, and my personal favourite, at night time the rain reflects light and makes even traffic lights look f**king amazing. Jesus I love rain.
Atheists. Most of us are nice, sensible good people just like you, we just happen to have different views on religion. Just like any religion, of course there are extremists that give the group a bad name, and the rest of us look down on them and don't support how they act.
In France, almost nobody cares about your religion in daily life
Load More Replies...I'm still confused as to why so many people are so concerned with the faith of others. I wholeheartedly support your right to believe, or not believe, in whatever you choose. Shouldn't I be afforded that same right?
I see, that problem comes from “the true believers”. It does not matter from wich religion. I am a believer. But i dont go to church and i am not being a fanatic. I believe in my way and never force people to be. But those true believers, they have their rules and if you dont go by their rules, they judge you, they can be really unpleasant. And this is the problem. They are so entitled. And second, politics should never be done according to religion. Religion should be a private matter and should not be forced on anyone…
Load More Replies...I like the way Ricky Gervais puts it. When you look at all religions combined there are approx 3000 different Gods. Most religious people only believe in 1 God so they dismiss the other 2999. Atheists dismiss just one more.
Exactly. It is also very sad how a supposedly omnipotent god (talking about the Christians here because it’s the one I have closer) only showed himself to a very select group of people. Condemning the other humans in the planer to hell instead of doing miracles all over the planet and sending multiple profets.
Load More Replies...Atheism is not a religion. Atheists are not a group. Atheists do not have extremists. The only thing atheists have in common is not believing in fairy tales.
But there are a few Atheists who are bigots.
Load More Replies...People don't like that it is possible to be moral, good, and virtuous simply because that is who they want to be; not because "God" told them that's how to behave. Some people don't need "God" to not be a murder or rapist. Lol
I've always feared people whos only reason of being a deasent human is gods wrath.
Load More Replies...I am a Christian and I would say the biggest problem with Christianity are Christians. The small percentage that loudly look down on everyone else makes us all look like bigoted jerks. Its not my job to judge you or to tell you that you have to do anything. My job is to live my life and show love to EVERYONE... not just the people who I deem not "heathen".
The difference between an atheist and a cristian is that the latter needs the constant looming threat of eternal pain and suffering to show some moral decency.
I think that if there's a God then it's a sick creature, because everything in the universe is devour to survive, kill not to starve or worse, if there's one mind that created all this, then it's not a very kind one.
I second this. Just because we lack religious belief doesn't mean we judge or scrutinise those who do.
Christians think atheists are against them, therefore for Satan. They fail to understand that if we don't believe in any god, we don't believe either for its competition.
It the opposite in germany.. well not hate but overly religious people (weekly church visits, religious morals, etc..) are viewed as weird and backward minded since the population is at least. 40% atheist. Extremists religious hordes are rare.. most of the religous people keep it for themselfes and just belive in God but do not follow religous "rules".
There is an important distinction to be made here, Atheists (A-theists) do not believe in the existence of any deity. Antitheists (Anti-Theists) are actively opposed to beliefs in deities. They are absolutely different, in the way that asocial people do not seek social interaction, and antisocial people seek to actively oppose society.
As a Christian part of my understanding of human nature is that we are generally made with an idea of right and wrong. Doesn't matter what you believe, that sense is still there. People who need God to tell the difference are messed up.
Extreme athiests? When's the last time an Atheist extremist killed anyone over some imaginary boogeyman? Pretty sure the atheist aren't too extreme.
An extreme athiest? Do they not believe in god more than regular athiests or something? I've never met a hostile or judgemental athiest, can't say the same for any other religion, aside from Buddhism.
Just because you haven't met any, doesn't mean that there aren't any.
Load More Replies...Atheists simply don't believe in a higher power. The "extremists" as you call them, HATE God. There's a big difference. They behave as if they need to obliterate all mention of Him - everywhere.
I sometimes think that many loud "Christians" don't really believe in God, based on how they behave. It's just a shield they hide behind while they do nasty things in the name of God.
Yes unfortunately there are many people who are christian only by name but their hearts are far away from Jesus.

Atheists are smart. The people that hate them are desperate and jealous because of the faith that ties them down.
Not all atheists are smart. Also, real christians don't hate anyone and they are not desperate or jealous of atheists.

My sister is an atheist, while I believe in God. I would never try to force my beliefs onto her. I mean God gave us free will to choose. Do religious groups trying to strip others of that free will think they are better than God????
I've had more than one person confuse my belief in evolution and/or not taking the Bible literally with being an atheist.
As someone who believes in God (I'm not part of any religion) I can still respect other religions and not be stupid about it.
Uhm what? In my part of the world (Western Europe), being an Atheist is pretty much default, at least in my generation.
In the US, there are still laws on the books that you can't run for certain offices if you are. Said I was an atheist once, was asked when I started worshiping satan. It was wild.
Load More Replies...The main issue is every religion or non religion has extremists and it gets worse when the extremists are up front and making all the normal believers and non believers look horrible.
Every one has a right to chose, bottom line just be good compassionate people
Genuine question: are there extreme atheist movements out there? I've never heard of any.
wrong, not just like you.. atheists are good, without the fear of burning in hell.
It is the few who demean religious people, make comments about Flying Spaghetti Monsters, and claim they know there is no God that give atheists a bad name.
I am concerned about those bad ones. What are those militant atheist groups?
If there was a majority of nice, sensible good people you would not be hated. The reality: no human being can either prove existence of god or disprove "His" existence. God is unknown and probably unknowable!!!
I have heard the argument made that if you don't believe in a specific god, you may as well be an atheist, in the eyes of someone who believes in that specific god. Because you don't believe in "God". You know; the Real one. Even if you claim to believe in a god, if it isn't the right one, it doesn't count as believing in a god. This is not just the US; let's not forget the Middle East and parts of Africa. They whack your head off for that stuff there. In the US, they just stigmatize you.
Well said. You can't assume a few bad apples are representative of the group as a whole. A recent quote I came across "If your religion requires you to hate anyone, you need a new religion".
If religion is the "personal" connection to god that so many Christians claim these days, then why do so many people spend time criticizing and hating other people's personal connection to god regardless of what it is called?
Unfortunately not everyone who claims to be a chistian, truely is one. A real christian does not hate anyone.
Load More Replies...I am one, and I do not really feel that I have to assure everyone I am nice. I actually am not. This alone does not make my stand views any less relevant.
It would be nice if nonreligious people would have this same attitude towards religious people too.
Most of us who follow non-mainstream religions have the same problem. I’m a Druid, and no, we don’t sacrifice babies or anything like that. We worship nature in all its forms and served as the bards, teachers, and lawgivers in the ancient world.
exactly. just because we're atheists doesn't mean that we think your beliefs are stupid. we respect your religion/culture just don't participate in it.
I am glad to hear that you respect other people's beliefs. Unfortunately that is not true with all atheists.
Load More Replies...One problem, which I don't subscribe to but I know it's an issue, is that a lot of religious people think that you need religion to be a good person. Therefore atheist and people who are just spiritual with no organized religion connected cannot be moral in their eyes.
It would seem from this post that atheism exists everywhere. So does belief in some religion. No one should force their opinions on others about this. Everyone has the right to their OWN beliefs and opinions. Respect that. I am a person of faith, but I hold to respect. It's about how you treat others. There are atheists that treat others like crap. But, there are also so many atheists who are good, kind, moral people who lead good lives. There are people of faith (any faith) who are good, kind and moral people who live and let live. But, there are people who believe in God and then proceed to inform me that I am condemned to hell if.......or they act with unbelievable cruelty in the name of "god". I have an issue with that, not atheists.
Same. Just like you don't hate on others for their religion, don't blame atheists for not believing in it
What exactly does an extreme Atheist do?? Saying 'There is no God! really loudly?? Half my country consists of atheists. Since the Christains in my country are usually not bat-s**t crazy, the difference between them is really not that apparent.
Liar. We are bunch of miserable god hating creatures. And we are eating babies
As a European christian I have gotten quite a strange impression from American christians. I don't personally know any of them, but they do seem hypocritical. And that is far from christianity. Jesus preached against hypocriticism multiple times.
Load More Replies...Most I've encountered are fine. I think with newer generations, atheism is on the rise in the US.
Same goes for Satanists, I think. From what I've read/heard, many(?) are actually very cool!
Been, well, anywhere in America? I regularly get death threats because I don't believe in someone's God. The number of times "good, loving Christians" have told me to "put a gun in your mouth and shoot yourself" when I say "No, I don't go to church," or "No, I no longer hold any religious beliefs" or "I am an ex-Christian" far outnumbers the times said Christians have been kind and loving in the model of Jesus.
Load More Replies...Aren't the majority of people effectively atheists these days? I don't think they get a lot of hate (or any hate, for that matter) at all.
- Me: If God is real, why did he make me an atheist? - Believer: because he gave you freewill to act like you want - Ok, if so... why do you want me to change my view if it is God's will not to believe? Why do you hate homosexuals claiming that "God's does not like them" if that's what they choose to be under freewill (assuming that homosexuality is not part of the creation and they choose to be like that). Isn't that contradictory? (among 100s other contradictions i have found on their arguments)
Plus, most Atheists and Agnostics did try several different religions before deciding on none, but gleaned the best guidelines from them along the way. For example, the Golden Rule, which appears in nearly every religious text, makes perfect sense in a secular way as well as a religious one. So, it’s not like we’re anarchists who want to live in chaos. We want get along peacefully with other people too. We just don’t want to fight wars to force them to live by our rules (though, if you think about it, most do already anyway). Oh, and Agnostics are not Atheists!
Yes and no. Technically, everyone is Agnostic. Nobody 'knows' if a god exists or not, we either believe (faith), or we do not believe. So yes, you can be an Agnosic Atheist.
Load More Replies...All religion has got extremists, those are the ones you've got to look out for.
As one of Jehovah's Witnesses, I find atheists and agnostics the easiest and most interesting to talk to. Could be because I used to be agnostic. As a group, I personally find they are more reasonable and logical than people are strongly religious.
JW is a cult, not a religion. Although the difference can be pretty immaterial sometimes.

The Catholic church, on the other hand, is an oppressive and powerful institution. I don't hate Catholics, but I do hate the institution.
Load More Replies...God! (sorry) They would hate me even more. I am not even an atheist. Athiests belive in something or the chance of a god. I don't believe there is anything mythical, supernatural or mystical. I beleive we are just another life form on a planet trying to survive.
You are describing being agnostic, not atheist. I was the latter, now I'm the former. After deliberately choosing to study things I didn't believe in, to understand the viewpoints of others. And I don't necessarily believe in any higher intelligence, I just know science isn't as infallible as I thought as a teen.
Load More Replies...I want to agree but when i used to be religious i met too many who laughed and mocked me for believing nomatter how much i tried to respect their unbelief. Man, some of the comments here make me lose what little faith I had left for the US.
Most atheists don't mention that they're atheists in casual conversation. There's just no reason to. We generally only let it be known we're atheists when religious people try to force their beliefs onto us. If every atheist you meet makes it a point to tell you he/she is an atheist, perhaps the problem is you.

Reading.
Even those who read scoff at what others read and it's not necessary.
Reading overall is good for the brain and memory. Comic books, magazines about cars or fishing, romance novels, old classics, it's all reading.
There's no need to feel shame or shame someone for what they read.
Enjoying cartoons as an adult.
Good content is good content and looking back at the cartoons I loved now and then. I do have superior tastes.
Child please. I'm approaching retirement age and I never stopped watching cartoons.
Therapy. It's never a bad thing but I definitely still know people who are firmly against or see it as a sign of weakness.
People who want to live a basic, "normal" or "boring" life. From all generations, I am constantly hearing locals/normies being made fun of for not wanting a ~fancier~ lifestyle but like... Why does that matter? Besides, just having a roof overhead is luxurious to to some people. Let others live the lives they want to.
Rats. They're some of the funniest, most affectionate and intelligent small pets, with a ton of personality, who actually enjoy engaging with people.
They get a terrible reputation for carrying disease or being aggressive- which is just not true for domestic rats. Growing up I had almost every common pet rodent you can think of, and hands down I'd pick a rat over a hamster any day.
Cats. Many people I know absolutely despise them because they think they cant love you the way some dogs can, or they remind you of the stereotype "crazy cat person" or the whole "they're all aggressive/bitey/scratchy" thing. Once I had both dogs and cats (and reptiles!) in my house - and though I love both, cats tended to speak a little louder to me. I'm part of a TNR company and ended up raising one of the cats I caught while searching for my missing cat last month and realized how sweet they can be if you take the time to earn their trust and give them space when it's asked for.
Bra straps showing. Like what? Why does it make you mad? It's fabric. And if I'm not mistaken, you're covered in it on the daily.
Sleeping with stuffed animals. You’re never too old for that.
The North American Opossum. They're docile unless threatened, and I think they are endearingly cute. They perform a great service by eating tons of pesky insects, like ticks. Added bonus, they are almost entirely immune to rabies.
Teenage girls who are obsessed with something (a pop star, a movie, a book etc). Let people enjoy things.
Broccoli. Steam it and melt a little Smart Balance on it. Yummy. Your parents didn't know how to make it. It's arguably the healthiest food you can eat, at least in the top ten.
Muslims, they are really misunderstood everywhere.
I'm in favor of practicing any religion you like, but Islam is one of the most intolerant religions to ever exist. There is no Muslim-majority country where being gay isn't hazardous to your health. There isn't a muslim-majority country that isn't a hellhole in regards to women's rights. Islam is incompatible with liberalism, the same way 14th century Catholicism is incompatible with liberalism. If you want to follow Islam, as a liberal I say you do you, but don't expect me to turn a blind eye to the religion's social problems.
Homeless people. Austin, TX just reinstated a ban on public camping/sitting/laying down, with zero allocation for actually helping the homeless population.
Sharks. They're just a well designed killing machine and the chances of them killing you are super low. Orcas and dolphins are actually "meaner" if you want to look at them in a human way, they'll purposely mess with you or hurt you. Sharks might just bite you on accident.
Hyenas. Most unfairly villainized and maligned animal in the world all because of some stupid Disney movie. They are not scavengers at all they hunt 90% of their prey and lions steal food off of them far more than they steal off lions. They are highly intelligent predators with an equally important role to play in the ecosystem.
Teachers.
I can personally confirm that I was a piece of work in grade school - then high school. And it wasn't because of teachers - it was because of me.
So true! Living with a teacher every day, and believe me, it's not only the kids, but also the parents, the school board,....
Snakes. They are awesome pets and the super dangerous ones don't want anything to do with you. I can't stand people killing snakes they find. To me its like killing a stray dog you find. Just call animal control.
Snakes are so cool, we used to have a pet Murray darling python. Sadly she passed away a few years ago.
Trans people. Just like many other minorities, most people get little exposure to them other then what they hear and see online. Aka the trans freakouts and anti trans pages aren’t too realistic, along with the tumblr 30,000 genders people, “real” (not because of a coping mechanism or fetish, etc but fr like born that way, ) trans people irl are quite normal.
GMOs. Humans have been slowly doing that since we started cultivating crops, now we can just do it quicker. And there are millions of people who rely on GMO crops to not starve to death.
It's just Monsanto GMO seeds. 1 generation so they can keep selling them, and they don't care if their product does get into organic fields nearby. Losing natural, unmodified seeds to Monsanto's greed is terrifying.
Brussels Sprouts. You can do so much with them! Just stop boiling the hell out of them.
People with the Karen haircut who are actually normal and chill.
TV shows made specifically for toddlers. They are toddlers. It's all colors and shapes and being excited over simple things. That's what toddlers are about. YOU don't need to watch the show. It's not for you.
Nickleback - I'm not a fan, but it's just kind of generic rock music that you are in no way forced to listen to.
Billie Eilish. I don't know what it was that made people go "eeeew, BiLlIe EiLiSh" but come on. She's an interesting person and her music is genuinely good. I'm not one for forcing artists on people, I just don't get when a relatively innocuous musician gets that level of hate.
And while I'm at it: Taylor Swift writing about relationships. Just about every artist in existence has either written about their relationships at least once, or usually write about love/relationships, either through experience or generalization. Why is it okay for people like Ed Sheeran, John Mayer, or Ariana Grande to write about their relationships without much uproar, but when Taylor Swift does it? Sheesh.
Body pillows.
There's no law saying you have to put something sexy on it there's plain colored pillowcases for them literally everywhere.
They. Help. You. Sleep. Gud.
How can people hate body pillows? I have one covered in a plain white sheet and it helped me have the best sleep I've ever had. Honest to god, I recommend everyone to have one.
Veganism. We just don't want innocent animals to get hurt yet we get mocked for it all the time.
People do not hate the veganism, we hate the aggressive, "only we can save the world, you f***ng animal killer"-like evangelist vegans.
Anyone showcasing genuine passion and hobbies on social media.
There are 2 kinds of people. 1 People who do what the hell they enjoy and don's give a s*** what anybody thinks. 2 People who do what they do, and post and share it everywhere. Once it is out there in the public, the public has a right to respond. Be a 1.
Boy bands/ any music where the target audience is teens/young women. people need to stop assuming that anything that is liked by that demographic is stupid.
I don't think people hate boy bands per se. I think they hate the cynical manufacturing of them by music companies. 'OK, so we've got the super handsome one, the goofy one, the sensitive one, the blond one...' 'Can they sing?' 'Sing? who cares?'
Kristen Stewart--she's just socially awkward during interviews! She's a decent actress. People freak out that she's not super emotionally expressive... Some people just aren't!
I think a lot of people hate these things because media and the internet tell them to.
I'll add introverts. It's okay to be an introvert, you don't have to be an extrovert, introverts can be fun, too an it took me years to realize that.
I love my introvert friends! I'm a socially awkward extrovert, but I'm a heck of a lot more outgoing than many of my friends.

I will add: innocently staring at people shouldn't be that bad. We are visual and curious creatures and sometimes we just want to look with wonder or appreciation at someone else, but it's always perceived as creepy/perverted, and unfortunately it often is. I often check out someone's hair, shoes, backpack decals, facial structure, clothes etc. but terrified that I'll be "caught" appreciating their style or something. For this same reason, I never compliment strangers the way that I want to.
Now you need to take into account that the other person doesn't know your thoughts. Many do stare with creepy intentions. And also that no everyone is always waiting for compliments. Having some empathy about that would make it easier to understand how it's not appreciated to stare. Also, what you personally want should never be at the cost of discomfort of another.

I showed a friend an English version of a K-Pop song and they SERIOUSLY enjoyed it, but when I showed them the original, they were disgusted that I had "tricked her into listening to that stuff." I went on later and got a bachelors and masters degree in computer programming and IT. Most of the AA was the general ed stuff that all degrees require. Not a useless degree.

Load More Replies...You know what should be on this list? People who like signs like "Live, Laugh, Love". I like to think I'm a pretty edgy, cool, artistic, individualistic, and self-made woman. OK, so why do I get made fun of if I want a gd inspirational quote in my home.?! There is nothing "basic" about me. Ya'll are judgmental a-holes. lol
I would add K-Pop, J-Pop, and C-Pop as well! I enjoy this music and I'm teased and judged for being interested in different cultures? Same when I listen to any music in Spanish or French. I'm always judged for listening to different languages and I don't understand why. I showed a friend an English version of a K-Pop song and they SERIOUSLY enjoyed it, but when I showed them the original, they were disgusted that I had "tricked her into listening to that stuff." It makes me really upset that fans are teased and judged for listening to this. It's our musical taste, and no one is asking you to be a fan, so please just respect the fact that WE enjoy this. Thank you.
uhh you see there are no problems when it comes to k-pop its just the fandom has toxic stans :(
