There’s always something people have demonized. First it was fat, then it was food additives, and lately it has become sugar. But things people see as evil don't end with our diet.
Other commonly disregarded stuff may have to do with music, like the controversial band known as Nickelback or going to psychological therapy, or not liking animals like rats, tarantulas, and snakes.
We rarely reflect on why specific things cause us such adverse emotions, so this viral thread may give us some perspective. The simple yet thought-provoking question “What doesn't need the hate it gets?” was asked by Redditor u/Alexdoesthedo, and it has clearly produced some very illuminating responses.

The rain. Rain is f**king awesome. It feeds all the plantlife, makes puddles, and my personal favourite, at night time the rain reflects light and makes even traffic lights look f**king amazing. Jesus I love rain.
Atheists. Most of us are nice, sensible good people just like you, we just happen to have different views on religion. Just like any religion, of course there are extremists that give the group a bad name, and the rest of us look down on them and don't support how they act.
Pineapple on pizza. It’s delicious, and if you hate it don’t s**t on people who like it.
Reading.
Even those who read scoff at what others read and it's not necessary.
Reading overall is good for the brain and memory. Comic books, magazines about cars or fishing, romance novels, old classics, it's all reading.
There's no need to feel shame or shame someone for what they read.
Enjoying cartoons as an adult.
Good content is good content and looking back at the cartoons I loved now and then. I do have superior tastes.
Child please. I'm approaching retirement age and I never stopped watching cartoons.
Therapy. It's never a bad thing but I definitely still know people who are firmly against or see it as a sign of weakness.
That's the only problem with therapy, it only works when the patient wants it too. If they're unwilling or in denial it won't work.
Load More Replies...At 35 I don't hide it anymore. We need to be the generation that sees mental illness is seen as just that; an illness. Just because we can't see it it's still a horrendous experience whatever you're suffering from.
Yup. Therapy is healthcare (now all New Zealand needs is for the government to hurry up and treat it as such, CINDY.)
Load More Replies...I have no hesitation telling people I see a psychologist and have done on and off for the past 20 years. I don't see it as a weakness and fortunately no one has ever made me feel like it is.
I was visiting a therapist for 2 years (anxiety, attacks). It is really important, how good the therapist (psychologist) is. My was average, but still helpful in hard things but also i had a lot of fun on sessions, really. Occassionally i still go on few sessions in year, but just to let go all of “things” in my mind and dont bother with this my family :D It really clean my head :)
I'm glad it helped you. I've only had a few sessions with my new therapist, but I've already made great progress with my anxiety/PTSD. More than with my previous therapist I had for 3 years, long ago.
Load More Replies...Therapy is the greatest gift you can give to yourself. It's messed up how caring for our mental health is stigmatized, when it should be valued.
I've had therapists who shouldn't have been in the business. Mentally unwell, drug addicts, narcissists, or just burnt out. But when you find one who you match with they can save your life.
I'd said people with mental illness. Nobody will blame on you if you get a cold or a cancer, but if it's anorexia, for example, you have to survive the illness and the people.
Of course, therapy doesn't always mean mental illness.
Load More Replies...Some talk therapy is very helpful ... some is totally useless! Depending on the therapist.
My mother saw it in a bad light. But, that could have been because I was going to therapy because of her.
My mom is a therapist. From her I can confirm that therapy is to HELP people. All people.
If only it wasnt so damned expensive! Here it costs 60 euros per hour (nothing compared to other countries i am sure). The only time when i really saw progressnis when i did it weekly or byweekly. But its just too expensive. Monthly is still a lot of money but doesnt seem to help me at all.
It's definitely expensive in the US too, way more that 60€, it should really be free for everyone imo
Load More Replies...My dad taught me when I was a kid "you don't tell others about your problems. When you feel sad ,you just go to work and ignore it. It will pass". When I had a major burnout years ago,it took me months before I was willing to find help. My husband talked me into finding a psychiatrist and told me I was by no means weak. I'm glad he did . Not finding help was weak on my part. Now I had to face my demons. You need to acknowledge you need help. You're not living on an deserted island and you can't do everything alone.
Therapy may be good for many people, but if you want to enter certain professions, you had better make sure you have never had any kind of therapy nor have ever taken anti-anxiety meds or antidepressants. If you have, you will be immediately rejected. It's sad, and most unfortunate, but true.
it seems a lot of ppl dont know the difference between psychology and psychiatry. they assume anyone seeking and advice with a psychologist is a crazy person
I've started thinking therapy as the same as if a personal trainer would help you with your body, a therapist helps with your mental side. You get your need/goal specific help in both.
i'm actually going cuz i currently am really good at self loathing and having anxiety so
It depends on culture. In the UK where I come from to go to a psychiatrist would be shunned by many but in the USA many look at it as no differentto going to a dentist.
It's the ones who are the loudest about it being a sign of "weakness" who are the most in need of it. They're frightened and unevolved and that makes them sound off like the toddlers they really are. Sorry, I have zero sympathy for that type.
I somewhat like going to my therapy (person with MDD here), its the only time i can express myself freely. my therapist have been very good so far
If therapy might just save someone's life, what the heck is your problem??
It’s a generational thing too. I have been a big fan of therapy for a long time. I’m 43, but my parents and grandparents just sucked it up and dealt. With its own benefits and definite disadvantages. There are some in the younger generation that can, and of course I am not saying all, use therapy as a sort of confirmation bias for a sense of victimhood with some things that in life you just need to be strong and deal with no matter what you feel about them. The world is in a transition regarding mental health in my opinion, and it is going to take some time and effort to shake some old stereotypes about it.
I started therapy when I was 31. I knew something wasn't right in my life or with me. Don't know how to word it. Turns out mental illness. Looking back I should have started as a kid, but that was unheard of. Take me to the Dr because I won't eat. "It's a virus. She'll eat when she gets over that". Over and over again. No. I wasn't eating because I couldn't stomach what was going on in my home life. Years of therapy and meds. I have Bipoar II disorder. Wanna make something of it? So what. Many times we stigmatize ourselves because it's so hard. We are stigmatized from the outside and that just adds to the whole thing. For the people further down who look down on us, do not be so quick to judge us. I truly hope not, but you might find yourself walking in our shoes. And then, unfortunately, you will understand.
The reason therapy is weird is all a chain reaction. Let me explain. Say we have a little girl. Let's call her Jane. Jane goes to therapy and feels like a freak because of it, so she doesnt tell anyone. Meanwhile, a lot of other kids in her school has this exact problem. When someone tells others about their therapy, well call him Tom, say the news gets shared with Jane. Jane now thinks of Tom as a freak, because Jane thinks of herself like a freak because of the same situation. Make sense?
I'm very open about my mental illnesses, medication and therapy to try and help remove some of the stigma; a lot of my coworkers have actually come to me to talk about theirs and ask about therapy because they're now thinking about seeking it themselves.
I used to be that kind of person who thought "therapists are for psychopaths, I am not one so I don't need it".... I was diagnosed with more mental illnesses than you can count on one hand... I am still no psychopath but I sought a therapist and I think my mental health wouldn't get so bad if I treated it sooner. Even people with no mental illnesses should speak with a psychologist every once in a while. It's good for you!
It's a little odd that caring about you physical health is considered a good thing, and one that many people put up for show, with post of how long they have run, how many vegable smoothies they have ingested etc. getting a personal trainer because you want to get into shape and improve on your body is a perfectly normal thing to do. However consulting an expert when it comes to wanting to improve your mental health is just seen as a sign of weakness and not strength. A persons eagerness to improve should never be a thing that is frowned upon.
I am one of those who is strongly against it. For me. I just don't feel comfortable opening up to a complete stranger. If other people find it helpful, good for them.
I don't see it as a sign of weakness, I just don't like telling my problems to anyone, especially a stranger. And I have always eventually work these out myself which I'm very proud of.
I tend to agree. If one really needs outside help - get it. But don't use everyone you meet as your therapist, your friends, your work colleagues, the media. Why do some people think that everyone on the planet wants to hear about their issues? We don't. And there are so many professions that will NOT allow any kind of therapy or drugs without losing their job - not right.
Load More Replies...Hot take on therapists: 1/3rd don't suck, 1/3rd became one to sort their own issues out, and are not much help to others, 1/3 like to get paid for f**ging with your head. This is not a scientifically backed survey, but based on personal and secondary accounts. Downvote me now.
People who want to live a basic, "normal" or "boring" life. From all generations, I am constantly hearing locals/normies being made fun of for not wanting a ~fancier~ lifestyle but like... Why does that matter? Besides, just having a roof overhead is luxurious to to some people. Let others live the lives they want to.
Rats. They're some of the funniest, most affectionate and intelligent small pets, with a ton of personality, who actually enjoy engaging with people.
They get a terrible reputation for carrying disease or being aggressive- which is just not true for domestic rats. Growing up I had almost every common pet rodent you can think of, and hands down I'd pick a rat over a hamster any day.
Cats. Many people I know absolutely despise them because they think they cant love you the way some dogs can, or they remind you of the stereotype "crazy cat person" or the whole "they're all aggressive/bitey/scratchy" thing. Once I had both dogs and cats (and reptiles!) in my house - and though I love both, cats tended to speak a little louder to me. I'm part of a TNR company and ended up raising one of the cats I caught while searching for my missing cat last month and realized how sweet they can be if you take the time to earn their trust and give them space when it's asked for.
Bra straps showing. Like what? Why does it make you mad? It's fabric. And if I'm not mistaken, you're covered in it on the daily.
Sleeping with stuffed animals. You’re never too old for that.
The North American Opossum. They're docile unless threatened, and I think they are endearingly cute. They perform a great service by eating tons of pesky insects, like ticks. Added bonus, they are almost entirely immune to rabies.
Teenage girls who are obsessed with something (a pop star, a movie, a book etc). Let people enjoy things.
Broccoli. Steam it and melt a little Smart Balance on it. Yummy. Your parents didn't know how to make it. It's arguably the healthiest food you can eat, at least in the top ten.
Muslims, they are really misunderstood everywhere.
I'm in favor of practicing any religion you like, but Islam is one of the most intolerant religions to ever exist. There is no Muslim-majority country where being gay isn't hazardous to your health. There isn't a muslim-majority country that isn't a hellhole in regards to women's rights. Islam is incompatible with liberalism, the same way 14th century Catholicism is incompatible with liberalism. If you want to follow Islam, as a liberal I say you do you, but don't expect me to turn a blind eye to the religion's social problems.
Homeless people. Austin, TX just reinstated a ban on public camping/sitting/laying down, with zero allocation for actually helping the homeless population.
Sharks. They're just a well designed killing machine and the chances of them killing you are super low. Orcas and dolphins are actually "meaner" if you want to look at them in a human way, they'll purposely mess with you or hurt you. Sharks might just bite you on accident.
Hyenas. Most unfairly villainized and maligned animal in the world all because of some stupid Disney movie. They are not scavengers at all they hunt 90% of their prey and lions steal food off of them far more than they steal off lions. They are highly intelligent predators with an equally important role to play in the ecosystem.
Teachers.
I can personally confirm that I was a piece of work in grade school - then high school. And it wasn't because of teachers - it was because of me.
So true! Living with a teacher every day, and believe me, it's not only the kids, but also the parents, the school board,....
Snakes. They are awesome pets and the super dangerous ones don't want anything to do with you. I can't stand people killing snakes they find. To me its like killing a stray dog you find. Just call animal control.
Snakes are so cool, we used to have a pet Murray darling python. Sadly she passed away a few years ago.
Trans people. Just like many other minorities, most people get little exposure to them other then what they hear and see online. Aka the trans freakouts and anti trans pages aren’t too realistic, along with the tumblr 30,000 genders people, “real” (not because of a coping mechanism or fetish, etc but fr like born that way, ) trans people irl are quite normal.
GMOs. Humans have been slowly doing that since we started cultivating crops, now we can just do it quicker. And there are millions of people who rely on GMO crops to not starve to death.
It's just Monsanto GMO seeds. 1 generation so they can keep selling them, and they don't care if their product does get into organic fields nearby. Losing natural, unmodified seeds to Monsanto's greed is terrifying.
Brussels Sprouts. You can do so much with them! Just stop boiling the hell out of them.
TV shows made specifically for toddlers. They are toddlers. It's all colors and shapes and being excited over simple things. That's what toddlers are about. YOU don't need to watch the show. It's not for you.
Nickleback - I'm not a fan, but it's just kind of generic rock music that you are in no way forced to listen to.
Billie Eilish. I don't know what it was that made people go "eeeew, BiLlIe EiLiSh" but come on. She's an interesting person and her music is genuinely good. I'm not one for forcing artists on people, I just don't get when a relatively innocuous musician gets that level of hate.
And while I'm at it: Taylor Swift writing about relationships. Just about every artist in existence has either written about their relationships at least once, or usually write about love/relationships, either through experience or generalization. Why is it okay for people like Ed Sheeran, John Mayer, or Ariana Grande to write about their relationships without much uproar, but when Taylor Swift does it? Sheesh.
Body pillows.
There's no law saying you have to put something sexy on it there's plain colored pillowcases for them literally everywhere.
They. Help. You. Sleep. Gud.
How can people hate body pillows? I have one covered in a plain white sheet and it helped me have the best sleep I've ever had. Honest to god, I recommend everyone to have one.
Veganism. We just don't want innocent animals to get hurt yet we get mocked for it all the time.
People do not hate the veganism, we hate the aggressive, "only we can save the world, you f***ng animal killer"-like evangelist vegans.
Anyone showcasing genuine passion and hobbies on social media.
There are 2 kinds of people. 1 People who do what the hell they enjoy and don's give a s*** what anybody thinks. 2 People who do what they do, and post and share it everywhere. Once it is out there in the public, the public has a right to respond. Be a 1.
Boy bands/ any music where the target audience is teens/young women. people need to stop assuming that anything that is liked by that demographic is stupid.
I don't think people hate boy bands per se. I think they hate the cynical manufacturing of them by music companies. 'OK, so we've got the super handsome one, the goofy one, the sensitive one, the blond one...' 'Can they sing?' 'Sing? who cares?'
Kristen Stewart--she's just socially awkward during interviews! She's a decent actress. People freak out that she's not super emotionally expressive... Some people just aren't!
I think a lot of people hate these things because media and the internet tell them to.
I'll add introverts. It's okay to be an introvert, you don't have to be an extrovert, introverts can be fun, too an it took me years to realize that.
I love my introvert friends! I'm a socially awkward extrovert, but I'm a heck of a lot more outgoing than many of my friends.

I will add: innocently staring at people shouldn't be that bad. We are visual and curious creatures and sometimes we just want to look with wonder or appreciation at someone else, but it's always perceived as creepy/perverted, and unfortunately it often is. I often check out someone's hair, shoes, backpack decals, facial structure, clothes etc. but terrified that I'll be "caught" appreciating their style or something. For this same reason, I never compliment strangers the way that I want to.
Now you need to take into account that the other person doesn't know your thoughts. Many do stare with creepy intentions. And also that no everyone is always waiting for compliments. Having some empathy about that would make it easier to understand how it's not appreciated to stare. Also, what you personally want should never be at the cost of discomfort of another.

All of these that where mentioned just remind me how great it is that people enjoy different things. A lot of things I wouldnt learn or hear about if someone didnt introduce me to it. What a boring world it would be if we were all the same, acted the same and liked the same things. Love and embrace our differences but try not to be an asshole if someone is not like you or likes things you dont.

I worked as an hourly worker in some chemical plants & refineries... I got a bachelor's degree in humanities... It was so useless that I couldn't get a job selling insurance on commission with it... so I went to work as a workin' man... I was hated everywhere I worked because the workers didn't have any education beyond high school, and they were jealous and offended that I would dare to work in "their plant". They would tell me to my face that I was a fool for working there with a degree. I got tired of telling them that I was making three or four times what I could get with the useless degree...
I got my AA in social science and humnaities becuase after basic training and tech school I only needed 6 classes to finish it.
