There’s always something people have demonized. First it was fat, then it was food additives, and lately it has become sugar. But things people see as evil don't end with our diet.

Other commonly disregarded stuff may have to do with music, like the controversial band known as Nickelback or going to psychological therapy, or not liking animals like rats, tarantulas, and snakes.

We rarely reflect on why specific things cause us such adverse emotions, so this viral thread may give us some perspective. The simple yet thought-provoking question “What doesn't need the hate it gets?” was asked by Redditor u/Alexdoesthedo, and it has clearly produced some very illuminating responses.

Reading overall is good for the brain and memory. Comic books, magazines about cars or fishing, romance novels, old classics, it's all reading.

35 Things That Get A Lot Of Hate But It's Undeserved Rats. They're some of the funniest, most affectionate and intelligent small pets, with a ton of personality, who actually enjoy engaging with people.

They get a terrible reputation for carrying disease or being aggressive- which is just not true for domestic rats. Growing up I had almost every common pet rodent you can think of, and hands down I'd pick a rat over a hamster any day.

Many people I know absolutely despise them because they think they cant love you the way some dogs can, or they remind you of the stereotype "crazy cat person" or the whole "they're all aggressive/bitey/scratchy" thing. Once I had both dogs and cats (and reptiles!) in my house - and though I love both, cats tended to speak a little louder to me. I'm part of a TNR company and ended up raising one of the cats I caught while searching for my missing cat last month and realized how sweet they can be if you take the time to earn their trust and give them space when it's asked for.

Author Peter Benchley who wrote Jaws regretted how Sharks became feared and hunted and became an advocate for their conservation. Sharks play a very important role in maintaining a healthy ecosystem and they need to be better protected.

I heard that sharks don't like the taste of humans. That's why in the very rare case that a shark bites a person, they will probably just abandon their prey after the first bite.

Correct. Sharks don't eat humans. When they bite you it's because they mistake you for something else (for example when surfers paddle on their boards, they somewhat resemble a sea turtle to sharks). The bite might also "just" be an "investigation bite" because the animal is curious about what you are. They don't have hands so they use their teeth.

Whilst I agree that orcas and other dolphins are meaner than a shark any day of the week it’s rare to get attacked by a dolphin with the main culprits being bottled nosed dolphins orcas have never attacked a human in the wild and when they do it in captivity it’s because they are insane due to the conditions they live in

There was a great experiment where scientists put animal blood into a tank with sharks, then human blood. The sharks virtually left the human blood alone except for one or two that came to have a sniff and decided they didn't like it, but there was a frenzy over the animal blood. Most shark attacks are either because we are in their territory, or they simply don't know whether we're a tasty snack so have a bite and see. If a shark wanted to kill you, or eat you, it would. The fact they bite us then leave us alone says everything.

Odd to not that dolphins and orcas are intelligent, social mammals while sharks are neither. So the smarter, social creature learns how to mess with others while the shark is just looking for a meal.

How can you hate a creature for being what it is? Sharks work solely on instinct and have "hunting aids" we can only dream about. But I'll never get bitten by a shark, because I am terrified of these creatures in the water, as I am the water itself. But hate it? No.

the risk of dying from a falling vending machine is higher than the risk of dying from a shark attack. Yet no one is scared of vending machines, thought statistically it would be a more proper thing to do. The human mind is wierd sometimes.

Fact is sharks very very rarely eat a person. They do bite but that is how sharks investigate and test things since they don't have hands. Majority of people killed by a shark die from shock, blood loss or drowning. They are seriously misunderstood creatures.

@MagicalUnicorn They aren't. There are no cases of death caused by wild orcas, just few accidents. There is only one known human to be injured by a wild orca, California surfer, orca mistook the surfer’s wet suit for seal and bit his leg, but it immediately let him go. Injury required 100 stitches but no permanent consequences. Something different are prisoned orcas, they attack people because of the stress of captivity that leads to aggression. (sorry for my english)

When sharks bite you they're giving you a taste. If you feel it bite you, DO NOT SCREAM OR THRASH AROUND. IM BEING SERIOUS. The very best thing you can do is to stay as calm as possible. If you stay calm, there is a VERY VERY VERY low chance it will like the way you taste. Most of the time it wont like you and swim away. If it decides it likes you, punch it as hard as you can on the gills. Those are it's weak spots. If you see the shark coming before it takes a taste, back away slowly. Never thrash and panic if you see a shark.

I can only assume that the OP has never seen the documentary series "Sharknado" and therefore has no idea of the threat sharks actually pose to not only those areas in direct contact with the worlds oceans but also those areas that are only tangentially in contact with the worlds oceans. This is the only reason I can see which would lead the OP to make such a statement to the "chances of them killing you".
