The Mayflower group left because a) they were being hounded to believe the correct things and b) because they were fed up with others not seeing that they were right and doing things their way. The second part usually missed out in US history, I only recently discovered. They wanted to start from the beginning and have a world where everyone agreed with them. I have read accounts of them hanging someone for expressing a Pagan activity in the early days, so they most certainly weren't supporters of religious freedom at all.

I used to work in Saudi Arabia, there, there is almost no way to be atheist..and alive (at least if you're not a foreigner and even, you have to lie you get a religion when you make your visa)

Everyone has different experiences. I’m also an atheist living in the US, but I have had comments about my lack of faith and had people question whether I had the ability to be a good person if I didn’t believe in God. I’m very glad you never went through anything like that; it’s a sign that things are changing for the better.
