While most of us use Google Maps and GPS on a daily basis, it’s pretty rare to find real fans of cartography, the study and practice of making and using maps. If you were ever into geography or history as a kid, the chances are you’re not much of a map person.

But today, we’re going to turn this around. Combining science, aesthetics and technique, cartography builds on the premise that reality can be modeled in ways that communicate spatial information effectively. And below we collected some of the most unusual, intriguing and informative examples of maps that will put our reality in a whole new realm.

Thanks to this awesome corner of Reddit (whose name we cannot mention thanks to the notorious internet police), there’s a LOT to uncover! Get ready to boost that inner adventurer of yours since we’re about to go places you’ve never even known existed. Psst! More awesome maps can be found in our previous posts here, here and here.

Countries That Have Had Female Heads Of State Or Government In The Last Century

Countries That Have Had Female Heads Of State Or Government In The Last Century

marrow_monkey Report

Previously, Bored Panda spoke with the founder of the subreddit named Patrick, who shared some very interesting insights into the wondrous world of maps. According to him, there are many different reasons one chooses to make a map. “Sometimes for navigation, sometimes for showing statistical phenomena, and sometimes for fantasy. While artistic skill helps, it is not absolutely necessary. The important thing is to make it easy for users to glean useful information. Most maps should have a thesis or a story it is going to tell and this needs to be told through the map.”

Today, the subreddit of maps is home to 1.7 million devoted members, making it a Reddit powerhouse. But just like any other online community on the platform, changes are inevitable. Patrick told us that the subreddit is doing well, but “Reddit overall over the last few years has shifted towards mobile-friendly content. Reddit used to be only for desktop users. In the early days, the content was mostly large files that were wallpaper-sized. They were great for zooming in and exploring in detail." Those days are now gone.

The moderator also said that nowadays, "Reddit is overwhelmed" with users who only use it on their smartphones and other mobile devices. "For better or worse, that is how it is and that's the trend for the future. The subreddit contains a lot of bite-size Instagram-style statistical maps. The community upvotes this content and if that's what they want, that's the direction the sub will take," Patrick told us some time ago.

Are you KIDDING me? Is this why I get weird reactions online sometimes when I mention how I was atheist and now agnostic (agnosticism is basically a fancy was of saying 'we have no way of knowing'). I cannot imagine how atheism is a threat, but only from my perspective. If someone knows about this or lives in these areas I would love to hear what you have to share

FWIW, @Lauren Caswell, the US Supreme Court ruled that these bans are unenforceable. FOr the last 50-plus years, in fact. The state constitutions often date waaaaay back, too, and aren't often updated. (Why the US hates updating constitutions, I don't know. I really don't.) Historically, these states also often banned Jews and Catholics from public office, in their state constitutions. Goes back to colonial era under the UK, and then expanded along with the white people, is the best I can figure.

Dude, why should you have to declare your religious beliefs or lack there of for any position whether it's a street sweeper or government representative? It shouldn't even be a question asked! I don't think I've ever asked anyone their religion in my life, I've debated religious ideas with people but generally I don't care what peoples beliefs are as long as they aren't forcing them on people

This is false. These states have laws on the books from over 100 years ago about swearing the oath of office in the name of their god. However the courts overturned these laws a long time ago, so they dont actually exist. I mean until 15 years ago according to laws on the book, Black People could not live in Boston, but those laws had no validity anymore.

Just so you people don't get worried, there are many ridiculous laws which were passed over a century ago and people just forgot about them. So while they may still be on the books, nobody even knows them or cares enough to even vote to repeal them. I can guarantee you all that in every one of those states, there is at least one atheist holding public office.

The laws are not Constitutional, so they are just so much blah-blah-blah by morally corrupt politicians who are trying (and succeeding) to obscure their lack of anything resembling morals or ethics by doing meaningless gestures. It is a testament to the sheer stupidity and ignorance of their voters that this actually works.

Kinda sorta fake news? US states are filled with unenforceable, unconstitutional laws that are never removed from the books because they are already struck down by courts. FILLED. There are entire books on absurd laws. In this case, some of these laws PRE-DATE the U.S. Constitution. Here's is Pennsylvania's ban on atheism, from its pre-U.S. constitution. Itmakes no mention whatsoever about atheism, but merely limited a prevention of discriminating against someone on their basis of belief to believers: "No person who acknowledges the being of a God and a future state of rewards and punishments shall, on account of his religious sentiments, be disqualified to hold any office or place of trust or profit under this Commonwealth."

No, they don't. Ones purpose is to give you knowledge and prepare you for challenges of real life ahead of you while another tries to shape your believes and submit to servitude. One operates facts of knowledge while another gives you false hope of easy answers. Therefor NO - church and school have nothing in common.

Nuclear energy isn't as dirty as people think. Actually it's one of the cleanest. You don't need much space for it as you would need for solar or windmill. It is constant and reliable as you don't rely on wind/sunshine. The only thing you need is water to cool the reactor. However, if something goes wrong then the results are disastrous. Is it worth the risk?

Sulfur dioxide is not poisonous in any meaningful sense. Any substance will kill you in too great of a concentration. But it doesn't bioaccumulate in your system and the greatest harm will be the stink of rotten eggs until you are thousands of time above anything you're likely to get from LaPalma.

As I understand it, abortion is legal upon request in the UK. Though technically there has to be a risk to a woman's health it was ruled that "the continuance of a pregnancy is always more dangerous to the physical welfare of a woman than having an abortion, a state of affairs which is said to allow a situation of de facto abortion on demand to prevail".

When I tell people I went in the tunnel under the sea, they seem to expect a glass enclosure that one could see out of. I always have to clarify, "It's under the GROUND below the sea. You can't see anything!" (I could not get my phone to pair with the app that lets you see the outside.)

Fun fact. Since Vietnam used to be a french colony it has tons of lean words. Among them is "xăng" which is short for "ét-xăng". So actually Vietnam should also be blue :)
