More than 70 percent of Americans who follow current events feel concerned about "fake news". Well, they have every reason to. False or misleading information can be seen everywhere—from online media to print, from TV to radio. But even if we feel overwhelmed by the number of lies we're bombarded with daily, it shouldn't discourage us from exposing them.
Luckily, some people who stumbled upon falsehoods said about them online chose to do everyone a public service and call them out. To celebrate their razor-sharp replies, members of the Quit Your BS subreddit decided to document their deeds and share the screenshots with the whole community.

Gene Roddenberry had a vision of how he wanted his imaginary future to look. It may have been a bit naive and idealistic, but it gave people a ray of hope at a time (the mid to late 1960s) when the real future didn't look very bright to many. Roddenberry was barely in his grave when Berman began dismantling that vision. Yes, he's an @rse.

Since 2013, the Quit Your BS forum has amassed more than 1.7M members. The subreddit started when user GreenMagine shared a Facebook conversation where one person was accused of lying about getting engaged. Another user responded to the post: "I wish there was a whole subreddit for this, like r/quityourb*****it or something. Or at least I hope the trend continues." Redditor (and now moderator) Doxep replied by saying that they created a forum with that exact name.
Ever since that day, the community has been growing strong and becoming one of the main places for people to call out any type of lies, fake news, and misinformation. And from the number of posts the members share, it seems that falsehoods online get shared all too often.

A survey conducted by the Pew Research Center found that 64 percent of American adults said fabricated news stories were causing a great deal of confusion about the basic facts of current issues and events. They interviewed 500 people on landline telephones, and 502 on cellphones. The respondents came from different backgrounds, education levels, demographics, and had different incomes.
While Americans are aware that these stories spread perplexity, they reveal a fair amount of confidence in their ability to detect such made-up tales. About four in ten respondents felt very certain that they can recognize fake stories, and another 45 percent felt somewhat confident.
Generally, about a third of the US citizens confirmed they often stumble upon fabricated political news online. Pew Research Center explained that "it is difficult to measure the precise extent to which people actually see news that has been completely fabricated—given that news consumers could see but not recognize made-up news stories as well as mistake factual stories for false ones." Yet, these numbers show "a high-level sense of the public’s perception of this kind of content."

I don’t know if that person is also lying about having a girlfriend, but people change their profile pictures all the time to do call outs like this when they’re not actually the person in the picture.

Previously, Andrew Selepak, Ph.D., a program coordinator of Master’s in Social Media and a lecturer at the University of Florida, told Bored Panda that "everyone engages in self-image manipulation on social media. We highlight and promote our best moments while leaving out the bad or mundane."
"Before social media, a person could tell a lie to another and then the exact opposite lie to someone else, and it is possible no one would know. But you cannot do this on social media because everyone you know finds out at once."
He noted that the one great thing about the internet is that collectively, we can uncover falsehoods and those who spread them more than ever before. “If anything, social media may actually limit the amount of outright lying people do anymore because anything they say or post can be refuted by any and all of their followers rather than by one person,” the lecturer said.

For example, when we see a story criticizing a politician or sports team we don’t like, we will probably share it because we want it to be true: "We aren’t the originator of the lie, but we are spreading it because we didn’t do our due diligence to fact check it first."
Yet, this is not as bad as being the creator of a lie. "Politicians, internet trolls, and influencers spread lies about issues like COVID-19, their political party or the opposition, or other major political issues, to manipulate the public." Such posts are dangerous because these people have a greater reach. Thus, their lies can be further spread by individuals who want to believe they're true.

I have to wonder if these are all made up by the papers or if they have people sending in anonymous tips and they don't do their due diligence. In America, if the paper knowingly makes something up and it harms your reputation, you can sue. But if someone "reports" something and you ask for comment and don't get a reply after an hour, you can usually get away with it (assuming it's about a public figure). So in other words, it's easier to sell someone else's sh** than your own!
“This is how fake news spreads,” Selepak explained. “But it can be difficult to combat fake news because as individuals we often don’t have reach as influencers. We can debunk and dispute lies, but not as many people will see it, and some might be more willing to believe the lie than the truth.”
We are all impacted by dishonesty on social media. Selepak provided COVID-19 as an example: "those who were telling lies that Covid was spread through 5G towers led some to take down the towers for fear over the disease." He added that people also get hurt by encountering exaggerations online. "We know that celebrities have personal trainers, personal chefs, ... and Photoshopped images they post to social media that then receive thousands if not millions of likes on their post. Social media has a way of setting cultural norms on behavior, beauty, relevancy."

It was a prank set up by a couple of UK comedians for their Saturday-night light entertainment show. A lot of the trash tabloid newspapers, who routinely vilify green campaigners, ran it as a real story to make it look like violent green protesters were targeting Clarkson. It wasn't a real protest. In real life Clarkson is quite interested in climate change, and has highlighted some of the issues in his show about his farm.

It sounds like a stranger paid for his meal, so he never got the check.. if you don't get the check, if you don't have cash, you can't really tip.. unless you want to buy a soda or something and leave a fat tip on that receipt, but even still, some places will only let servers enter tips up to a certain percentage of the bill.

If you pay a meal, you pay a tip, unless you're in a country where they are discouraged/offensive. You don't go out to eat if you can't tip. You also don't offer to pay for a meal if you don't pay for the tip. I have no idea who "Mr. Beast" is, bit he's in the right here; it's a jerk move on the other person to offer to cover something and then stiff the help.

It was a weird way to raise funds. Especially popular amongst high school age boys who would offer basically their work as a way to raise funds. You bid on a way they offered to be your slave for an agreed upon time. They would usually get all silly with it, dressing up in costumes, whatever to draw attention. Football teams in small towns did it. In retrospect, it was just as cringe as I thought but times changed, thank God. I don't think we've improved everything to the point if pointing fingers at the kids yet back then, but we are getting better. I'd like to see some better with on bullying and such.

We had a day like that when I was in high school. Basically you "bought" an underclassman for the day (they volunteered and the money went to charity) and you could dress them up and/or have them do weird stuff all day. It was stopped shortly after I graduated in '99 after some of the upperclassmen went too far and actually injured a few kids. We NEVER called it "slave day" though. Yikes.

Musk didn't even start Tesla. He was supposed to be a silent investor but then pushed out the guys that actually started the company and began calling himself a "founder". There was a court battle with a settlement that is not allowed to be discussed. Musk came from a well to do family before anything else. He's literally the son of the guy that owns the IT company.

Like the guy who said his submarine idea for getting the kids out of the cave wouldn't work and wasn't being seriously considered...... so his response was to use his considerable social media influence to accuse the guy of being a 'pedo' in revenge for it. Whilst he may have been unfairly targeted at times, he definitely isn't a good guy.

Not on a big, Internet famous kinda scale, but it happened to me too, to be... "given too much credit", to put it nicely. Accusations of things I've never done or said, without any proof. One of my ex-bosses and a previous circle of friends, in two instances. Thankfully, both are over now. Although disappointing, I find it pretty interesting what people hear you say, the askew connections they make with the words you give them, and the ones they insert themselves to fill the gap of their wanted imagined story.... wow!

What bakes my noodle is that verified account holders can see on a dashboard EVERYTHING that uses their name. They can face take-downs, account removal and even full-blown litigation. For a stupid tweet? There are literal companies that hunt these clowns down for a slice of the litigation money.
