It’s a blessing when we work in a place we enjoy, doing what we love, with people who respect us, and an employer who values our efforts. Recognition in the workplace is extremely important, considering that our professional life consumes the majority of our time. Even if our work is not necessarily what we always dreamed about, it's still better to be in a company where our input is appreciated.

However, what if the workplace turns out to be our worst nightmare? Typically, this is a red flag indicating that we should consider leaving it as soon as possible. Unfortunately, for various reasons, some people postpone the decision to quit until they reach a breaking point and can no longer tolerate their jobs. The Facebook page 'I Quit My Job by Text' is dedicated to sharing authentic examples of message exchanges between members of its community and their employers.     We reached out to Nathan Dimoff, the person behind the 'I Quit My Job by Text' page, and asked him some questions related to employment, toxic work environments, and other factors leading to people resigning from their jobs. We were told the page was created by Dimoff, who’s currently moderating it together with another admin, Richard.

    First, we were interested in how he came up with creating the Facebook page, and we learned that: “I have quit a few toxic jobs in the past by text, so when I saw the threads on Reddit about people texting their boss and quitting, I thought it was great. I wanted to move the discussions over to Facebook. I created the page so I could share my stories of quitting by text and back them up with others' stories."

    Dimoff mentioned he never anticipated that the page would attract so many people sharing similar experiences in their professional lives: “When I started the page, I had no idea it would have turned into what it did. I just wanted to be able to have the same discussions that were on Reddit on here with my friends. Through me and my friends' interactions on the page, having much-needed discussions about toxic workplace environments, the page quickly reached 10k followers in the first year. After the first year, the page got picked up by other pages and it quickly grew to what it is today.”

    We were curious if the messages shared by people on the Facebook page have any recurring themes. Nathan told us: “There were a few patterns I noticed with the messages and screenshots that people messaged us. The top two reasons people were quitting were people believing their pay was not meeting the amount of effort they were putting into their work and horrible management that either did not communicate with their employees, or, if they did communicate with their employees, it was with a nasty ongoing attitude.”

    I think this is a common problem. The best workers are given more and more to do and they do it because they are good workers, it then falls apart when they are taken for granted and can't make a shift. S****y management.

    The 'I Quit My Job by Text' moderator also told us more about the posts that engage the page’s audience the most: “I would say that the most resonating stories would be screenshots that we share of people showing us that they quit their job by text and then after we shared it, they find a better-paying job or a job with a better management system in place. Our followers love to see those updates. They also love when our followers send us messages and ask us to post their questions anonymously, looking for feedback from other followers on how to handle situations at work.”

    I quit my job this week. I had to have a required surgery and biopsy following some health problems i’ve had. I had medical leave covered, I always provided notes and documentation that HR accepted no problem. My (male) boss CONSTANTLY had issues with it the second he found out it had to do with a uterine problem. Telling me that if “I wasn’t dying” I needed to come in. Well I started having complications from surgery and my doctor wanted me in and he argued with me up and down, saying I just wanted time off. After being in pain and exhausted that he was the only one who argued it, I quit.

    This male boss needs to get back to school so he can learn when to use "your' and when to use 'you're'. If you don't know when to use the one and when to use the other, you've no business being a boss of anything. Also, but I guess we all know this by now, US labour laws are a joke.

    When the CDC quarantine period was reduced from 10 to 5 days it was explicitly "if asymptomatic" (I just double-checked in case I was experiencing a Mandela effect or something, and it was very clear).

    The CDC guidelines are for whether you feel sick or not. They in no way are intended to make people report to work after 5 days of illness.

    You CAN test positive for months after.. but if you're still showing signs then you're still sick. Wether it's covid or a cold, stay home.

    That is absolute BS. You have to be symptom-free for 5 days in addition to having a negative result, at least it used to be that way

    While it's true they decrease it to 5 days, it's 5 days and all the symptoms resolved. It's supposed to keep going if you're still sick! (Then it was 24 hours after the symptoms are completely gone).

    The whole aura around COVID is just weird. We had an employee come into the office to receive a Flu injection (they are free for govt employees) but then admitted she was positive for COVID. She was asked to leave immediately. We don't believe she told the nurse dispensing the injections so have had to clean up that mess as well. WTAF

    Lastly, Dimoff shared with us how the page has impacted conversations around workplace conditions and employee treatment: “We have received stories over the years that not only has this page encouraged people to find better jobs, but it has opened up conversations at work. There have been a few times where people have messaged us saying that they took our advice and asked for a meeting with their bosses asking for more pay and that it's worked out in their favor. We have received that type of message at least two dozen times. We have also received a few messages where we have encouraged people to talk to their coworkers about their pay. They have told us that this had helped them get an increase in their pay as well.”

    "Walked out mid shift in August because my coworker was being a d**k, texted my boss to let him know. It was a decent place to work and bossman was chill. Hadn't had any issues with my coworker until that night. I asked him to apologize and he refused, so I left. Coworker popped off and said that "I can't be the only one doing anything here, f**king do something." When I was literally working side by side with him for the passed 5 hours, sweating my ass off. We were like 15 tickets deep. I was like "What?", he responded "I'm doing this all by myself." I asked him for an apology, he said "F**k no." We got like 10 tickets out of the way and the rush died down, so he went to smoke without saying anything and left me with the 5 tickets. I finished those 5 tickets, packed up my s**t, walked out the back door and he was lighting a 2nd cigarette and talking on the phone. I interrupted him and said "Now your doing everything by yourself." Got a new job now, part time, a $6/hour pay increase and cut my commute down from a 13 mile bike ride to 2 miles, the boss pays everyone a damn decent wage and everyone is appreciated"

I finally quit my s**tty job at a non for profit where I and just one other case manager were responsible for 400 clients and the only other employees were outsourced workers from the Philippines. 52k a year and no benefits. The only benefit I had was Fridays off.     1/2 I used to work caring for adults with disabilities. My supervisor never liked me, but I did very well with the two clients in the home where I worked. Then they moved a third, high-needs person in there, and I did not have the medical training or behavioural management training to provide proper care. I kept telling them that there needed to be a dedicated caregiver trained to handle that individual client, which I was not. They kept telling me I wasn't being a "team player." I managed for a few months, 12-hours shifts with no breaks, and even though I got through the task list, the clients were not getting the time and attention they needed. My mental health collapsed and I had to take time off, and my supervisor again went off on how I wasn't being a team player. Then he had to take one of my shifts. He called the police a few hours into it because he couldn't handle it and got scared.

    I work with the disabled community and am disabled myself. The way they worded this is fine! And the way we treat these workers is awful. The good ones leave for a living wage and the bad ones stay because they can't get another job.

    So, I've been deeling with my grandma being in and out of the hospetal and rehab facilities for the past 2 months. I am her caretaker and have had to call into work to take care of her. I am a shift leader at Taco Bell. Well, was. I was demoted yesterday due to having to deal with family medical emergencies. I have screenshots of text messages with the other managers and how they have acted towards me over the situation. I live in Texas, unfortunately. So I doubt there's much I can do. But I feel me being demoted is retaliation and unjust punishment.
