Movie Theater Employee Gives Regular Coke Instead Of Diet, And Here’s How Internet Responds

Food allergies are no joke, and for some the wrong ingredient can literally mean the difference between life and death. Despite this however, certain people in the service industry seem to take great pleasure in giving customers precisely what they DON’T want.

This was recently highlighted by an Imgur user named Amrikia, who posted about somebody boasting about having deliberately served people regular coke instead of the diet coke they’d asked for. In response to this, other people then came forward with their own stories, from people with Celiac disease being purposely served food containing gluten, to people with stomach ulcers being deliberately given whole milk in their latte instead of the soy they’d asked for. It seems that some spiteful people just want to make other people’s lives difficult, but perhaps they should think about what they’re doing, as what might seem like a harmless prank could actually have very serious repercussions.

Sick or not sick, it's a choice you have to respect. Why is that concept so hard to grasp?

Because "I know better than you". Sure, roll your eyes, b***h to your friends about how a customer who orders 16 large pizza and a diet coke because "cutting out sugar makes you lose fat"... or whatever makes your day. However; you are paid to help people with their food orders, not force your lifestyle onto others.

Just don't risk it everyone. Just give the person what he/she ordered. It's not worth getting into a lawsuit or worse killing someone just to try to prove a point.

I don't understand why this is such a difficult concept to grasp. "No milk, please." = This person possibly has an allergy to milk. No milk. You could potentially kill someone with your petty behaviour.

I work as a barista, When I first started out I remember once I most likely gave someone full milk when they asked for skinny before I could even think about it they were out the door. Yep, im one of the a******s 😓 I remember feeling completely c**p and worried about it for the rest of the day and promised myself I would take more care, boy did i beat myself up about it and now think about the importance of it all the time. Food servers are humans too and make mistakes especially if they are young and still learning (you would be suprised how easy it could be), but to do that on purpose is just atrocious and inexcusable. If you have a food allergy please do not put your life in the hands of someone else who may just be starting, i guess its kind of like hoping on a plane with a pilot who has only done 1 hr flight time. No ones perfect, sometimes its not done on purpose and thats the concerning part. I was actually discussing the importance of this with my coworker today.

i'm allergic to strawberries. If I eat just a little tiny strawberry, I'm getting an itchy rash, then the rash starts to swallow and I need to be taken to ER. On my Mom's bday I took her to the restaurant and as a dessert we got a cheesekake. I asked politely to NOT put strawberry sauce on mine. Ofc I got my plate drowning in the sauce. Asked again to take it back. The waitress was really, really mean. The thing is - if I would ate a lot of strawberries I could even die. Please, don't be a d**k.

I suddenly feel very grateful to my local restaurants, who have always been really understanding. Maybe it's the difference between franchise and privately owned, but I've always found small eateries are far more accommodating. It amazes me people are stupid enough to deliberately ingnore specific food requests. If anyone is those senarios is stuck up, or up their own a**, it's clearly the food workers in question.

Have Coeliac Disease - Always always always ask if it's GF or made with flour etc. Been ignored so many times I got threatened with being fired from my work as they thought I was faking it as I had to take so many days off due to crippling stomach pains, having to 'use the facilities' every 20 minutes and basically being so weak from all that I cannot do my DESK job with the sheer amount of Brain Fog I suffer afterwards.

Guess it depends on what you have. I'm allergic to pork so I'll usually just order something with chicken or beef to be safe. I would be more worried if I had other allergies (like nuts or dairy) and depending on the reaction. (Reaction seem to change every few years for me and now I get a bad rash in my face) But tbh it's just sad that you can't even trust the person in charge of your food, no matter how much they dislike their job or think a person is just into some food-fad, noone should mess with someone else's food.

I have a lot of intolerance and allergy. Once had a waitress serve me a regular lasagne instead of veggie - I am allergic. She couldn't see the problem, Even when the manager explained it to her. The fork had been almost to my mouth before I noticed the smell. I'm also allergic to several of the chemicals in cigarettes, so smoke causes my skin to burn, go red and swell. You try getting smokers to understand that one!

I get looks and eye rolls all the time when I order food without onion, and have been told before to just pick it off. First off, I ordered it without so it should have come without, second, I can not just pick them off. If I do I will not be able to drive home, and wont make it out of the restaurant without having too vomit. Onions cause me to have blinding migraines and will mess me up for days. I am not talking a little headache, I am talking not able to lift my head and not able to see.

Yup me in Tesco the other day- I picked up 2 corn buns, well they were discribed as corn, but since one of the bakers was there placing some fresh breads on shelves I asked him is it 100% corn or mixed. He said corn. I was almost out of this alley when he shouted "miss excuse me this is corn mixed with wheat!" Phew, bullet dodged. So glad he bothered to correct his mistake

I'm a barista and I have in the past accidentally made regular milk lattes for people (only if it's busy or if it was a large order of multiple regular lattes and only one in almond or soy or decaf) I have literally grabbed a cup from a customer once as they were about to take a sip as I suddenly realize my mistake and I will offer to make another proper one free of additional charge. People are understandably shocked at first but are usually very thankful that I took it seriously. Usually it's someone who is only slightly intolerant and they say it's no big deal and that they'll take the one they got but then I'll make it free. I'm so scared of being super tired one day and making a grave mistake. I've got IBS so I definitely understand.

Sometimes its not about an allergy but that some foods can interact with with medications. If you as the server fail to do as asked and the diner is hurt or worse dies there is a potential for lawsuit or worse if proven jail time. Complain about the request but honor the request.

When you have a medical issue with food (I do), it's risky to put your faith in total strangers who have no vested interest in your health. Even if they don't mean to be difficult, they can make mistakes. You have to take ownership of your own food preparation or live with the expectation that you could suffer a potentially catastrophic event.

I have Celiacs Disease, Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, severe food allergies & hypoglycemia. I pretty much hit the "life sucks when you can't eat ANYTHING" lottery. I'm not able to eat out b/c of my health issues; when I leave the house I have to have a meal made & packed. Even a small amount of wheat or gluten will send me to the hospital; even foods that are healthy for others, like kale & spinach make my goiter inflamed, which feels like someone is strangling me, for days. If I eat dairy or potatoes, I get sick to my stomach & break out in painful & itchy rashes all over my body. But once a year on my bday my hubs takes me out for dinner to the only restaurant we trust. I'm normally a really strong person, but reading this made me really emotional. People with health issues have a really difficult life. Getting to feel normal sometimes means SO much to those of us who live w/allergies. I can't imagine a person so emotionally void as to enjoy making someone's life even more difficult.

Same with me once. I'm not allergic to tomatoes but I can't stand them. I ordered a sandwich I think and I said no tomatoes. I don't know if he didn't hear me or ignored me but what do you know, I took a bite and felt something like chewing gum, something really disgusting and I spat it out. I just cleaned them off and ate it but what if I was allergic? Bottom line, pay attention and make the order just like the person said.

My scent is extremely sensitive . When I go over to friends houses I always ask if we can go out for meals as many foods taste disgusting to me. ( Any kind of mixed food, stew, soup etc.) When I am forced to go to fancy restaurants I can't eat half of the things on the menu (My stomach is very vomit prone). I have to order special things that don't mix food and taste like almost nothing to others. I ask for plain chicken alot. I ask for no sauces and nothing touching it. The amount of times I've stayed home sick because some bratty waiter decided that I was just being picky are uncountabe. Listen to peoples orders.

I don't get why they would do it, even if the person didn't have an illness. Like, it's what they want. You're not them. If they want soy milk, just give them soy. Why is that so hard to grasp; besides, you're working right now, why the hell would you act like that at work?! Honestly!

Exactly, just follow your job descriptions.. If it's on the menu then you should be able to serve it like they ask. If it's not on the menu, check if it van be done, and if not, be HONEST about it!! Money is not that important! It's better to loose a customer because you can't help them then a customers death or severe health problems..

When you order something in a restaurant it should be made the way you want it. No question there. I just wonder why some many people are allergic to so much these days. I'm an old man and when I was a kid everyone ate peanuts. All the kids drank whole milk because that's what they had in the school cafeteria. No one was allergic to gluten until 10 or 15 years ago and now they say 1% of Americans are. When I tried to find the cause for the sudden increase in gluten allergies I found explanations varying from better testing to increased use of insecticide. It is puzzling.

I am a server in a large chain country restaurant and I absolutely freak when my guests say that one or more have allergies within the party. I will move a mountain into a stream to keep you safe. I am so afraid that I will cause pain that I walk every but of their order through the back of house to watch it. I had a family with 3 little sweet boys under 6 with a deadly but allergy. I almost had a breakdown but I kept them safe. I begged my manager to cook the food and he did because I would it let it go and I would have mouthed and cried and freaked until someone cooked things my way. The children were happy, parents relieved and I calmed down. They now ask for me when they come in. If I EVER SAW OR HEARD OF A COWORKER doing this s**t to someone I would lise my job and the coworker would be picking their a*s up of the floor nursing a black eye or a broken nose. I refused yo take a tray full of food out because the cook started to make snide little jokes about what he did to the food. I got a manager to come close and listen and the dumbass cook talked himself into a final written warning. You can kill someone. This is deadly serious..... I just do not understand being so arrogant with someone's life. If I saw a person doing this elsewhere I would call the cops. This is an assault on ANOTHER person and for that I feel that it is a horrible gesture intended to hurt, maim and even possibly kill. You should be arrested and prosecuted for attempted mude

One of the more irritating things about having (food) allergies I find is that people almost always say "But they taste so good! You'll like it if you would just try some!" to me when I explain that I have allergies and I can't have something like onions. It's not that I'm a little kid that refuses eat his veggies without even trying them, these things actually hurt me. And then there is the morbid curiosity angle: "So you are allergic? Oooh! What would happen if I sneakily add some of this stuff to your food without you knowing? Would you die? Would you get really really sick? Have to go to the hospital even? Woud you try some so i can see what happens?" I don't mind the curiosity as such, it's the weird "what if I give it to you without you knowing it" bit that is kind of disturbing, it's as if they want to experiment on me to see if its true or something.

It is even more disturbing when a doctor decides to prescribe a med that can kill you because he wants to see the reaction you will have to it. I am severely allergic to Ibuprofen. It closes my airway. 3 times the same doctor tried to give me Ibuprofen for pain and a nurse caught it. She asked him why and he said he thought I was lying and wanted proof. There is a red flag in my files that he is never to treat me due to his misconduct when I was a teen.

I have no allergies at all, except I am somewhat allergic to throw up. I agree with ALL THIS it needs to happen when someone doesn't take into account what you have asked for they could kill you and they would be able to say, I didn't hear her/him very easily, almost as easily as not listening. that would be hell for many people, and just because they (example) 'she' is not allergic to anything does not mean 'she' can ignore their polite requests, I am at school, I have a very good friend with celiacs, she is off school sooooooo much, often for reasons of this, as I am guessing, even if it is a guess, it is a thing that could very easily happen

I have a very serious allergy to tomatoes. It's a very uncommon allergy, and it's extremely frustrating and embarrassing to try to order food with "no tomatoes, please. I have an allergy" So often, I'm given tomatoes anyway, or ketchup. So many times I have thrown away money driving back to restaurants after discovering tomato on my food. It clearly says "no tomato, no ketchup" on the receipt, but people just don't want to listen. The worst is when I bite into something with the tomatoes hidden halfway in, and end up throwing up on the spot. Why should I be forced to deal with this just because you don't want to leave the tomatoes out? And then deal with weeks of a horrible rash over my face, hands and neck, and dulled taste in my mouth due to the burns from the tomato? Sometimes these requests are done for a reason. Don't be an a*****e.

As a manager at a fast food restaraunt, it always amazed me how people think that just because they prepare food in a certain way at home, or can eat certain things, its ok for everyone else. I've sent employees home because they did not understand this. I've written people up, and they thought I was just insane cause the s..t doesn't happen to them. I wish I had this while I was a manager. I no longer work in a food business. Getting out was the best thing I've done. Cooks and waiters can all be childish at times. The job is usually stressful, so its really easy to think that one guest is just being an a*****e. Simple solution if you work in the food business: do it according to procedure, and don't skimp on the orders just because you are tired or stressed out.

Relatable. Ever since I was 18 months old, I have been diagnosed with Coeliac Disease. I was being fed gluten for years, and I was tired, couldn't walk, wasn't growing, had weak teeth, couldn't breathe, and more symptoms. I still have problems with those today. I have been lucky with eating, but there have been times where I have been out with my friends at age 12, and been paranoid about ordering, and making it very clear that there MUST be no gluten, to have them just roll their eyes, and bring it back out with croutons on the top. I have had to send back the same dish 3+ times because it had croutons on it, and they just scrape them off and tell me it's a different dish. PAY ATTENTION TO CUSTOMERS.

Really bad behavior from these food vendors...not being insensitive or anything but I thank God for we in Africa...we most times don't come across these conditions being mentioned here...maybe a bit of ulcer and diabetes...but almost none of these scary ones....I wonder how we would've been able to cope with it judging from d very poor state of our health care system....we would just be dropping like flies daily....and some people say there is no God.....hmmmm...

Part of it comes from our awful western diets, but part is probably also due to our health care system. What I mean is that these things get properly diagnosed. You probably have more friends than you think with issues, but they haven't been medically diagnosed is all.

I remember working as a supervisor at a Burger King when a family came to me asking about ingredients because their young son had a severe allergy. (too long ago to remember what it was) No way in hell I was going to be responsible for making that cute little boy sick. I checked all of the ingredients, sanitized EVERYTHING with FRESH sanitizer using a new bucket and cloth, put fresh food down just for him. His parents were delighted that I would go to such extremes just for their little boy.

My ex has a lot of food allegies and people think he's on a gluten free diet just because. No b***h, he can't eat that s**t or he'll be in constant pain, have migraines, and may have to go to the ER. He's also allergic to anything related to avocados, so I have cut out a lot of s**t out of my diet when we would go out to eat. People say I'm a b***h to begin with but when someone purposely screws with his, or anyone else's I know, order, you'd better believe I'll be a pissed off, protective b***h. I've watched him smile, knowing damn well he just got served gluten, then get mocked when he asked for gluten free. AGAIN. He's not scary, at all, and people tend to walk all over him. Funny how when I, the person over half a foot shorter than him, tell them to go remake it like he asked, especially after they make a jab at him, will f*****g run to the hills and get it remade. It's f*****g hilarious. It's 100% free to not be a c**t and do your job correctly. Don't be that person, it's hideous.

I am allergic to Berries, anykind. I purposely will not go to " juice" places because of the looks when you ask for a lemonade and ask it be made no where near the strawberries or any berries. Had someone at a Lunch meeting roll their eyes when I sent my Salad back because I specifically asked if any berries were part of its make up. The witch actually told me to just take them out!!! Had a Wendy's salad and asked for no strawberries, the girl brought me one premade, I watch her take the berries out. I asked her if she had done what I just saw, she denied it and when I asked for a Manager, she told her, she just wants a fresh salad! WTF? I explained to the manager and asked that the staff be taught about allergies and how you can't just take what you're allergic to out. I really do not want to end up in the ER

Just recently when Starbucks was offering macchiato drinks one had chocolate (mocha) and the other one had coconut, I ordered the coconut one because I'm allergic to chocolate (I was in the drive-thru, by the way). As I was turning onto Brainerd Rd I was taking a sip and tasted mocha. At first, I was perplexed because I know I clearly ordered the coconut one, but my throat told me a different story. It felt like it was closing, I quickly made a U-turn back to Starbucks. I got out of my car barely able to breathe and using my rescue inhaler. I went to the bathroom hoping that if I threw it up a little I will not have an intense reaction. I also had my epi-pen at the ready in case my rescue inhaler doesn't start working right away. Thankfully, the combination of throwing up and using my rescue inhaler did the trick. I was able to get up to the counter after 15 minutes, still a little bit out of breath and shaky, I told the cashier what had happened.

I've seen and commented to this same thread on Tumblr. Like TrickersGambit I'm allergic to pork - even a small amount can cause me severe stomach cramps. I'm also allergic to bell pepper, artificial sweeteners, cinnamon, and whole wheat. (I don't have celiacs but whole wheat causes me to break out and - well, spend a LOT of a time in the bathroom.) Plus I have a lot of allergies to medicines and some environmental. I've had servers still give me the stuff I'm allergic to, as a child I had a group of adults bully me into drinking hot chocolate with NutraSweet calling me a liar and wasteful - and boy were they shocked when I ended up in the hospital a few minutes later - and even doctors and nurses try to prescribe me medicine I'm allergic to. Heck, my insurance tried to force me to take a generic I'm allergic to because it's cheaper. (Some medicines I'm just allergic to the fillers, not the medicine itself. Like I can take tetracycline in a capsule but not a pill.)

I can't have animal protein, no milk, no meat, no eggs, not so bad, that it makes my blood curdle like a friend of a friend has it but it makes me oh so sick.... went to a starbucks copycat store the other week in another town close to where I life and one of the baristas in "my" coffee shop warned me about this particular one because they're dumb af.... I asked if I can have the caramel frappuccino also vegan "yeah sure, we'll just add soy milk" so I got it and walked around the corner to a) get out of the way for other people to order and b) to watch them.... the guy didn't even give a single thought about adding a flavored milk mix powder to the blender when it says soy milk. MILK POWDER!!!!! He had to toss it and I told him exactly what I wanted (caramel syrup is vegan) and then he wanted to add caramel drizzle and I could stop him last minute because again he didn't know that there is milk in it even though it's milky.... Worst thing about it: his looks blamed me for it....

I collapsed last year at my wedding reception, in front of everyone. Anaphylactic shock due to food allergy. Only survived because I had a couple tables full of firefighters and paramedics as guests because new hubby is a fire and rescue captain. Left my reception in an ambulance which they stopped 2 mins. away from hospital to get paramedic patch to doctor because I had a 4 mm airway. Caterer denies they were informed of any allergies, this is total bs. Next day my hubby and brother in law go to catering company restaurant to return wine glasses and settle bill. Original order for the event is produced, not only is there a list of food allergies on it, but someone there highlighted it with pink highlighter pen! Turns out they cooked my food in something i'm allergic to, but that was okay because "it wasn't in the food".

My mom's semi-allergic (or rather really sensitive) to certain spicy foods. This is why even though I love spicy foods (to a degree), I always specifically ask the server if that food item can be made non-spicy or pick a restaurant with a menu that offers non-spicy options like without pepper toppings. Though sometimes there would be a few mishaps or two but usually they're nice about it because the servers I've met also can't tolerate too much spicy foods themselves. The worst case scenario for mom if she has food that are too spicy is that she'd cough a lot and lose her voice for sometimes up to two days. People don't think that people would have any allergic or allergy-like symptoms to spicy foods and assume that they're just afraid of trying and would sometimes brush off the "no spicy" request as just a "preference". But I'm glad that most restaurants I've been to had really accommodating servers and competent managers.

Another thing to add is that our city has really strict restaurant training and sanitation rules and would stand by us customers if there's even a single complain of non-compliance. So basically people are more afraid of breaking rules even though some can try to be a******s but would usually think twice before trying something stupid because they could really face hefty fines and/or jail if they do break rules. I really do feel bad for the person in this article who had to suffer because of some a*****e. :( I wish them best of luck next time so that they wouldn't meet another one of these a******s. Also, one last thing: Respecting others are important even if that person isn't allergic. I mean it's a human thing to do. There shouldn't be needs for "laws" or "regulations" for people to know humanity.

You made me think... All my friends are healthy and order these things for no real reason, but to seem trendy, I guess. Never thought it could be actually so significant to really sick people. Probably they should explain it when ordering, to avoid similar negligence. Anyway by eating outside you automatically take the risk of having food poisoning or other kind of damage to your health.

I have several food allergies, and mostly I just eat at home. But once in a while (like once a year or so) it is nice to be able to eat at someone else's house, or at a restaurant, etc. About 20 years ago, a friend of mine died because of eating something at someone's house that he was allergic to--they just didn't tell him everything that was in the food, and it took less than 2 minutes for him to die of anaphalectic shock. Before he could even use his epi pen on himself.

I have had the horrifying gut pain from milk when I asked for a vegan coffee. Even if it was "only ethics" they ought to have given me what I asked but I am actually really badly intolerant to milk. It was in a takeaway cup and I didn;t see it I just took a sip. It tasted like milk but I thought I was paranoid and had some more. It wasn't until I was on the freeway driving a car with my kids in it that I doubled over in pain so bad my vision went wonky. And there was nowhere to turn off for some time! Thankfully I avoided an accident but I sure gave that cafe a piece of my mind. They said sorry and gave me a free coffee voucher (for a smaller size than I had bought). I actually wanted a refund and wish I had insisted but I was taken aback and just said nothing

I'm not sure I believe some of these stories - it is the internet, after all - but that's beside the point. If you work in a service industry, your job is to give the customer what he asked for. Period. Your opinion doesn't matter. The fact that someone could be seriously harmed by your decision to be an a*****e just reinforces the point.

As horrible as this really really is, being the one on the order-recieving end can be hard. I just recently had a severely busy stressful day at work (kinda similar to starbucks) and I was firing out drinks as fast as I could. This gentlemen had ordered three large drinks, no special wishes (which drained me of all the hot frothy milk I can prepare at a time) and when I set them down in front of him like a minute later (he was IN PLAIN SIGHT of the preparation process) he went "Oh can I have those lactose free?" so forgive me if I roll my eyes at a customer like this. I will forever do my best to do everything like I am asked to but I -have- expecienced "intolerance-a******s" (and I WILL secretly make your drink decaf if you are 14 and a snotnosed brat.). Also, please don't be a b***h if I don't carry vanilla-flavoured oat milk from another country or any other special item customised to your allergies. I am sure it sucks, but you'll have to go someplace else then.[/rant]

I am allergic to raw tomatoes and basically any fruit that's slightly acid. The mouth ulcers I get from those are no joke. I swear sometimes it feels like I've got a hole through my cheek. So whenever I go to a sandwhich bar I always have to ask for no tomatoes and really it's a pain. So far I've had no one put it on there when I asked. The worst offender to forgetting it is oddly enough my own mother. I constantly have to remind her to order sandwhiches without tomato. Or when she's making salads, she puts the tomato right in there and I have to fish out any cucumber and lettuce or whatever she put into it, that hasn't been soaked in tomato.

Just last week we ordered Chinese at work. My co-wprker and friend has a severe peanut and legumes allergy. We are always very careful when we order out. Well I verified 5 times that they use 100% vegetable oil and what was in the spring rolls. No peas no peanutbutter etc. I even told them I was asking due to severe food allergies. Two bites into the spring roll, she started having a severe allergic reaction. When I called back and told them that she was in the emergency room and the doctors needed to know what she ingested, they informed me that they use 100% vegetable oil but they cook their eggrolls and other items that contain peanutbutter and peanuts in it. To top it off, the springrolls amd eggrolls are cooked at the same time so it was probably due to cross contamination. I asked them if they have any policies to prevent this due to food allergies and their response was no and eating there was at your own risk and they don't have to disclose this information!

This is not specifically about allergies but the food service industry. I live in South Korea. In general, service at restaurants is incredibly prompt and attentive, with no delay or backtalk, especially when the employees are older (teens/20s might be a bit inattentive). Service is far superior to almost any experience I've had in the US. And there is no tipping in Korea. They don't get any incentive for providing good service. They just do it because that's their job.

On the other hand, I choose to eat at home because I know I can trust the food. Eating out is not SUCH an amazing deal when you think it could cost you your life. Even with the best will in the world, a peanut allergy, for example, can be triggered by just a trace from the day before on the hands of the chef. Why pay people for food which may, possibly, be your last?

wait staff/servers can be so mean spirited sometimes. I realize their jobs can be very stressful and many customers can be downright rude as well, but when it comes to messing around with other people's food should be an offensive that comes with jail time. As some of these poor folks have stated, this can be a life or death situation and who are you to judge them in the end?

I've actually had people put regular milk (or worse whole milk) in my latte instead of soy even though I specifically ask and pay extra for it. I am lucky that the most I get is horrible gas/cramps/diarrhea from regular milk but the whole milk straight up makes me want to cry in agony from horrible stomach cramps. My docs still don't know exactly what I have but it's a combination of lactose/casein intolerance. I always KNOW when they use whole milk because I can taste it and if I can't, I usually have violent reaction to it 15-30 minutes later that lets me know. And I am not even white or skinny.

On the flip side of the soda thing, I am allergic to aspertame and xylotol, aka artificial sweeteners, so I never order diet. I read labels very carefully, even on foods I've had before. About 10 years ago my favorite chewing gum switched from sugar to artificial sweetener and I spent an afternoon in the ER. When I go out to eat I always order unsweetened tea or water, or if I get a soda I have my husband taste it first. I've had people (including co-workers and family members) tell me when I ask if a food has artificial sweetener "Oh, you can't taste it". Really? Well even if I can't taste it it is still going to trigger a migraine so bad I go temporarily blind, so if you don't mind, I'm not eating it.

As a person with a gluten intolerance, its hard to actually know if what I'm eating is gf or not until about 30 minutes later when my body starts to shut down. The looks I get when I ask for the gf menu or ask that gloves be changed due to my intolerance are the real intolerance. If people would just have respect for others a post like this wouldn't be needed. Sadly, it is needed because of the ignorance and judgment.

Disgusted. I have been the victim of "skinny shaming" many times. Nasty comments and attitudes are NOT O.K., any more than fat shaming or any other type of bullying. I absolutely cannot have sugar or carbohydrates due to serious health issues. I always check and then double check with the person preparing /serving my food and/or beverage. I unfortunately have still had some negative reactions due to servers who were either indifferent or inexperienced. Regardless it's my choice as to how I eat and drink and nobody has the right to judge or alter my choices.

To be fair 99/100 times its the cooks not the servers and you shouldn't say things like "hun" and "it takes no time" because it takes their whole day they take care of hundreds of people and the human mind isn't perfect they are bound to mess up every now and again it isn't always malicious not everyone is trying to attack you they are just trying to get through their work day in one of the shittiest jobs there is where they get constantly disrespected so your "I asked for" or "and DON'T FORGET" sounds like "you stupid low wage worker I asked for this thing it's not that hard to take care of and remember hundreds of orders a day"

I have this problem with caffeine, not that I will die if I have some but it makes me feel really sick, my stomach and head starts aching and I become really anxious (physically anxious, I mean tachycardia, cold sweat, etc...) so I had to stop ordering coffee because all too often the barista would "forget" that I had asked for a decaf... It's sad because I really love (decaf) coffee, but for me it's not worth the risk anymore :(

I'm fortunate to only have minor food allergies, I'll only get a little sick if I eat too many peanuts or almonds. I get a rash if I drink pre-mixed chocolate milk (I think it's the emulsifiers). But people who ignore others' food allergies just because 'they know better' is nothing short of malicious. It makes me really mad. Making an honest mistake is one thing. But purposefully ignoring a person's order is potentially deadly. You're risking killing somebody to make yourself feel better.

Food allergy sufferer myself, nothing life threatening, but the cramps, sweats and nausea can indeed be very debilitating. There are a lot of good people out there at restaurants who care (bless you) and do their best but I have experienced a lot of irritation, snappiness and disbelief when I ask to clarify some things of the menu to be sure it doesn't contain anything "dangerous". My mother has a deadly allergy to pine nuts. DEADLY. She went to a company party being hosted by a fancy hotel, and the owner's wife specifically said NO NUTS WHATSOEVER, because her husband, the owner, also had a (different) nut allergy. So what do they do? Use POWDERED pine nuts as seasoning. WTF. Mom ate some, but thankfully not a lot before we realized. She still ended up at the hospital. Owner's wife was LIVID. Lectured them on how they could have killed my mother, and that if this was how seriously they treated food allergies, they'd think twice before booking with them for another party. Just because something isn't a commonly allergy, doesn't mean it won't potentially kill someone because of your negligence.

That one at least sounds unintentional, unlike these posts. Still terrifying though! My friend's daughter has a SEVERE nut allergy and it's been so eye-opening for me to be around her. I never realized how closely ALL ingredients have to be checked. And she is one of those that "this product was made in a plant that also handles peanuts" keeps her from eating whatever it is. Scary!

About that caffeine comment from iopele, decaf coffee contains caffeine. I haven't had a sip of any kind of coffee in 20 years because of migraines. There is a caffeine-free coffee, but it's some weird herbal non-coffee alternative. If you really are sensitive then your only option is to give up coffee and decaffeinated tea (caffeine-free tea is ok).

As someone who drank diet coke for years, I would know immediately from the taste and ask for a new drink. People have accidentally given me regular and it tastes so much sweeter than a diet coke that I can't even drink it. Many of my friends drink diet coke and they too would know right away if they were given regular. So I while I think the movie theater meme is likely a joke, I agree that you have to give people what they order because there may health issues and beyond your knowledge. Plus it's just a matter of trust.

I totally agree with the core message if this article. And I think it's really importnat to share it. It just seems funny that someone would drink diet coke "to be healthy". Coke? Healthy? Really? Come on peoplle, diet or regular, we all now there's no such thing as "healthy" sodas.

I ask for food to be cooked with less MSG because I have a kidney problem and the chefs always get angry and say, "Don't tell me how to cook. If you have a problem, go take medicine." If I had an allergy, I would just avoid eating at places which serve the allergenic food cos I can never be sure. I wouldn't trust anyone with my life.

Of course it's mean and stupid to screw up people's orders. Are the food preparers who do this likely to read and care about a post like this? Probably not. If you have a serious, life threatening condition, then shouldn't you take your own self-preservation more seriously than that? Why even place your life in the hands of a food worker who is paid minimum wage and most certainly doesn't give a flying fig about you?

People with food allergies and medical conditions shouldn't have to limit their lives because a******s can't do their jobs properly. A server or the concession stand worker at a theater is in the customer service industry. It is their job to take care of the customer and get the customer what they ordered. It doesn't matter if it's for medical reasons or personal preference. If someone orders diet coke, they should get diet coke. If someone orders gluten free pasta and the restaurant offers gluten free pasta, that pasta better be gluten free. It's not the server's place to judge or change their customer's order, it's the server's job to turn the order into the kitchen staff as the customer ordered it. If the server is too much of a self righteous or petty jerk to do this, they need a new job. End of story.

Sure, roll your eyes, b***h to your friends about how a customer who orders 16 large pizza and a diet coke because "cutting out sugar makes you lose fat"... or whatever makes your day. However; you are paid to help people with their food orders, not force your lifestyle onto others.

I went to a bakery almost everyday for 2 months. I had allergy with milk protein, so I drink my coffee with almond milk. A few days ago I bought my almond milk coffee as regular, I didn't realize the mistake at the first few sips. Long story short: terrible stomach ache and other problems during the whole day..and I have asked the barrista if my coffee was really with almond milk, I have remembered her to not to forget the higher price...just because she thought I drink my coffee with almond milk because it was funny, I felt sick the whole day. I didn't go back to that bakery since this "accident "

"Skinny bitches"? Sounds like someone is super jealous. You don't know why someone orders diet coke and it's none of your business. Grow up and stop hating on women. You will probably be working at a movie theater for the rest of your life, with your negative attitude.

This is not a prank. Its pure evil. I seriously hope those who does that stop and think about your actions. You hold a job as a professional server, be proud of yourself and take pride in your job. Don't judge your customers' choice .

I doubt it's evil and malicious, just ignorance. They don't consider that these choices may cause someone great pain or even take their life.

I'm not trying to steal your super secret recipe people, i just want to enjoy a meal without getting sick!

Scary!

Multiple food allergies here and some of them are on the severe level. This is not a joke! We need more food allergy related lawsuits!

If regular coke can make them sick and diet coke doesn't, guess what? Diet coke is healthier.

Yeah, did you even READ this. People can be allergic to real milk. "spiking" someones starbucks with milk could leave them in the hospital. Don't be an ignorant prick and let people the f**k alone. Got it?
