Now that your local hair salon is shut for the foreseeable future, it looks like your hair isn’t getting a professional treatment any time soon. But you still really want those fringe bangs, huh? Standing in front of a mirror, you tell yourself, “I can do this” as you cut your own hair with a pair of rusty kitchen scissors.
After all, spring is the right time to freshen up those looks and when a DIY haircut is the only service available, it’ll have to do. After all, how difficult could cutting bangs or doing a short back and sides be...?
Turns out it’s harder than it looks and many of us have ended up with hilariously bad haircuts. From seriously disconnected undercuts to accidental slips with the shaver, we’ve compiled them all. Maybe that Peaky Blinders haircut wasn’t such a good idea after all. Oh well, at least you can go for a buzzcut as the last resort — I heard they’re always in fashion.

My Kiddo Cut His Hair Yesterday, Then Agreed To Let Me Have A Little Fun With It Before We Fixed It With A Buzzcut
Bored Panda contacted La Boutique hair salon based in Sydney and asked their team if it’s ever a good idea to cut your own hair.
Senior hairstylist Joelene Booth told us, “There’s a reason that people go to study hairdressing for three years before they're even allowed to work on their first client and spend their whole life working at improving their craft.” She believes that a good haircut is not something you can learn from a Youtube "how to cut hair" video.
On the other hand, we are now living in unprecedented times. Joelene said that “there are a few tricks hairdressers can teach you to help tide you over until you’re able to see them next, like trimming your bangs.” First, do not bulk cut your hair—instead, try cutting bits at a time. Second, go millimeter by millimeter and don't cut straight lines. "To do this, you use point cutting, which is where you hold the scissors vertically, not horizontally," she explained.
According to Belinda Jeffrey, the award-winning hair colorist and owner of La Boutique, cutting your dead ends isn’t a priority. She said, “Use this time for treatments to repair the damage from styling and coloring to get it in the best condition you can for when you can return to your normal routine.”
Most importantly, remember that it’s just a haircut. Joelene advised us not to worry about making a mistake: “the hair will grow back before you know it.”

Followed All The "Steps" On The DIY Haircut Guide
In an interview with Bored Panda, Ryan Forsythe, Senior Director and Head of Education at Trevor Sorbie salon in Covent Garden, London, said that it’s better to leave your hairstyle ideas to the pros.
“We’ve all suffered epic fail haircuts and funny hairstyles as kids and those scars run deep. After 2 months, your hairdresser will have more hair to play with and who knows—you may want to take your style in a new direction.”
“We’ve all suffered bad haircuts and funny hairstyles as kids — those scars run deep. After two months, your hairdresser will have more hair to play with. So, who knows, you may want to take your style in a new direction.”
The enforced time at home is an excellent opportunity to give your hair a much-needed break from blow-drying and styling tools. “Give it the love it needs with the appropriate treatments — moisturizing, strengthening or repair masks. Now you have the time to let products do their work,” Ryan told us.
Have you ever wondered how the professionals do their own hair? Well, it turns out for a DIY haircut that a little goes a long way. Ryan said, “As a guy, the most I’ll do is trim and sideburns with trimmers. I’m not going anywhere so I’m happy to let it grow out a bit. I think that would be the same for most hairdressers.”
I'll Give Him Points For Effort Though
That's great if he did it himself. When needing 2 mirrors it's hard to know where your hands should go.
How You Actually Look After Cutting Bangs
Aw Snap, We Have To Go Bald
I don't know why people can't wait a few weeks. Your hair will only be about 1cm longer.
While most of the states in the US have allowed barbers and hair salons to decide whether to close for quarantine or not, the UK is now debating the prospect of shutting down all salons.
The conservative MP David Morris, who owned six hair salons himself, urged government to add salons to the list of closed venues. “Hairdressers don't wear gloves when cutting hair. It's impossible to do so," he told the Sun, “and they touch other people on average 1,000 times per haircut."
“I don’t want to see my former colleagues close down but I don’t want them sick either. Hairdressers work with so many clients every week that the issue needs to be addressed now."

Josh Went For The Full-On Bowl Cut
You know, the only difference between a good haircut and a bad haircut is 8 weeks... well, in this case maybe 18.
I'm not keen on these cuts even when they're done correctly 😕 At least it's fairly straight....!
I solved this almost 20 years ago. I just take hair clipper and I shave the whole ball on my neck
What do you mean "ball on your neck"?? What would THAT be?

Sometimes, an urge to change one's appearance has to do with changing situations amid stressful times. “It’s about people trying to control what they can," said Amy Flowers, a psychologist specializing in stress management and body image.
“A lot of people change their appearance when they have a change of situation. It’s a task, it’s a mission, and that makes us feel good," she explained.
In the end, it’s a painless way to experiment a bit without getting awkward looks from people on the streets. Let’s hope we can all pay a visit to the salon or barbershop again soon.

That pullover full of hair is much more disturbing than the hair- or earcut...
Why not just leave it or shave it all off? Seems like everyone is attempting the same kinda look.

Like anything, it takes practice. I used to cut my own hair for years and can do it pretty well. You just need to learn what works and what doesn't!

It's disturbingly ironic that the bowl cut is reappearing in numbers, since a lot of the art of the 14th century shows it was a popular haircut back when the Bubonic Plague was spreading.
I think most of these hairstyles are just bad in general. I don;t think a professional would improve them by very much

I've been a hairdresser for over 40 years. There are only like 3 cuts here that look halfway decent. SAD! And what is with that dude not putting a towel over his shoulder or taking his top off. Blue sweater and hair... not a good combo and for CHRISTS sake, shave your necks when your done, your not a Neanderthal! LOL
Certainly makes self isolation easier, who'd risk going out like that?
I've been cutting my own hair for years now with no issue.... but then I just shave my whole head, so there's that...
I find this genuinely bewildering. Most places are only in lock down for a few weeks, It's not essential to have your hair cut! I haven't been to a hairdresser since 1988, I just do a kitchen scissors cut, I'm used to it and my hair is slightly wavy anyway so I can get away with it. But this desperate need and total inability to wait a couple of weeks is daft! But many thanks to those who posted pics here on this theme cos really, it's hilarious 😂😂
It's not going to be a couple of weeks, but several months. And probably most of this lot were already due a haircut when lockdown happened.

I cut my own hair, but it's literally a fringe (bangs) and a straight end cut. I don't know that I'd chance anything more complicated, but hey the longer we're in lock down and the more bored I get...
I'm really worried about my brother's beard. It's going to look insane when this is all done. My dad has suggested that we try trimming him ourselves--which sounds like a really bad idea. I'm not tall enough to reach him, and he's going to protest like crazy because he loves his beard even when it's unkempt.
Shave it all off and by the time we're allowed back out again it will grow back
This is why my husband completely shaves his head to stubble. He can't stand spending money to get a haircut. Personally, I like it because it feels kind of velvety when he's done.
Ooh yeah I shaved my head once for charity and couldn't stop touching all my little stubbly bits.
