The problem with even the smallest white lie is that it can sometimes take on a life of its own, multiply and spawn into something much bigger and uglier until it’s out of control.

This is precisely what happened to this woman, Tumblr user rue-by-another-name. After a simple lie about a peanut allergy, to avoid being questioned about her dislike of peanut butter, she found herself faced with the uncomfortable reality of not being able to enjoy her beloved peanut M&M’s in public.

Not all heroes wear capes however. Her husband was there on the scene to save the day, and show what true love is!

This wasn’t the end of the story however. Her post on Tumblr attracted a storm of comments and hate-mail, with many people disgruntled about her blasé attitude toward the serious problem of faking allergies. In these gluten-intolerant times, when real sufferers of celiac disease are sometimes ridiculed because of the fad-following hordes, you can maybe see their point. But the death threats were taking it a little far. Rue issued an apology, and we hope that this is the end of the story!

Scroll down below to check it out for yourself, and let us know what you think in the comments!

What seemed like a cute story at first, spiralled into something way more serious in the comments

After 102 messages like that in her inbox, Rue decided to issue an apology

it's ok that she doesn't like the smell of peanut butter. it's ok that to save her time and having to 'argue' as to why she doesn't (which is fine, you don't have to like everything, really) she says she's allergic, what's not ok is how outraged people get at literally anything. it's like if I decided to spell peenut like this, someone somewhere would eat their computer and throw themselves down the stairs because of my hatred of the english language. here's a thing, try not caring about every little thing you see and hear, it's really ok, nobody will mind. also, peenut.

If she hadn't been harassed about not liking a food she wouldn't have told her fabrication to begin with. I feel for her. I am not allergic, but do have an inability to digest shellfish. Do I go into a big story about how IF I eat it I develop calcium deposits in my intestines and my digestive system shuts down? No, I say I'm allergic. The world is full of jerks and sometimes you just want it to be simple.

I have been instructed by an allergy-adjacent specialist to lie and say I'm allergic to penicillin. The truth is that I was probably one of the people who experienced one of those incredibly-uncommon side-effects (kidney shutdown) and that it's likely enough to happen again that no doctor is willing to contemplate giving me more - even in a controlled environment. But that's long and complicated, and doctors seem to have enough trouble with "I can't have beta lactam antibiotics". So... I'm deathly allergic to penicillin.

I am deathly allergic to peanuts and have almost lost my life several times to this. I can tell you right now that when you tell a person about your allergy they will be just as annoying as the person saying " eat it" I usually get " I would kill my self if I was allergic to peanuts, no offense" or " but like what happens if you eat it?" Lol so its fine as long as she is consistent with her lie and doesn't send the wrong message that some of us could eat them when we feel the need, go for it!

And even if she does... what's the big deal? Is it that people won't take allergies seriously enough? Really? Is that a real problem? Are people offended by that? ...

I have thought about doing this myself. I detest onions, I almost never use them in any way shape or form when I cook. I have had restaurants lie to me when I ask them if a dish has onions in it and had friends lie to me when they make something and when I eat it and it has onions in it the response is always the same, I didn't think you could taste them in it. So yeah I have thought about just telling people I am allergic to onions, because people don't give a s**t about serving you something you don't like if they think it is silly for you not to like it, but maybe they wouldn't sneak those disgusting things into my food if they thought it may kill me. For the record I have never told anyone I am allergic to onions, but I have contemplated it.

Word. I have a white hot hatred of onions and have also contemplated using the allergy lie (but never have). I hear the same thing - "oh, you can't taste them!" - Oh, yes, I can, and they make me want to vomit.

It is possible, however, that she has an allergy to an ingredient in peanutbutter that is not present in peanuts. On the other hand, it is amazing how people judge you if you don't like something. I am allergic to too many things, including fish. So people tell me the same s**t: "how can you not like fish!". Sorry, I get really sick from the even the smell of fish, because I am allergic to fish. My advice to this lady is to find out if their is an ingredient in peanutbutter (apart from the peanuts) she could be allergic to. Nowadays, so many ingredients are (unnecessarily) added to food which we don't want or need, but they are there anyway. Check it out.

You are very likely correct, and she did state that in her final post. I've had to quit buying a lot of brands of peanut butter due to the added palm oil, thenuse of which is decimating the palm trees. WTH, peanuts already have their own oil. I would guess they're using old dried up peanuts so need to add oil, so I wouldn't want their product anyway!

Wouldn't it be better to change the kind of people you meet? My friends don't try to change me or judge me....if I don't like Coca Cola (for example) they don't tell me :"Oh my God....you are not like almost everyone!" They will tell me:" So what do you like?" In my opinion one real friend is better than 200 "empty bottles"... life is too short....

Her husband is sweet. People overreacting about her so-called "peanutbutter allergy are so dumbass. She'll do and say what she likes. She won't eat whatever she doesn't want. She will pretend having allergies and all she wants. Her husband loves her anyways. Stop being so hypocrites people. Gosh. Seriously. -_-

I feel you on this! In the fourth grade my best friend wanted to be supportive and say she was allergic to peanuts like me, I was like oh she's a sweetie, but then she decides she's hungry one day and starts eating peanut butter in front of the class. It took away the severity of my allergy and my classmates assumed I was just faking like her. I honestly think it's super hard to explain to a person who doesn't suffer from life threatening allergies how much anxiety we suffer from making sure they understand the situation.

People shouldn't be harassed every time they reveal a food aversion. When I was a student, I used to say I was allergic to beer because I hate beer, and what do people drink in college...? Even now, in my 50s, my brother in law is constantly trying to find me a beer I like. Last summer at the beach, I spit out his latest "mild" offering into the sand. and the rest of the cup followed shortly afterward. I get that people are more comfortable when they feel like they belong, and maybe the root issue here is that people felt betrayed by her lie. What if, instead, we all focus on things that truly matter? Maybe then people won't need to "hide" to avoid petty conflicts, or jump on the latest food bandwagon just to feel special.

Why is her taste preferences anyone else's business? Just say "I just don't like peanut butter" and let those words stand. We are not required to defend our every choice, our ever preference! Besides her original post was about love, not the world's opinion of it. Just say "None of your business peanut police" and slam the damn door. ive encountered this problem with wheat. I'm not a celiac sufferer & yet if I'm out, the easiest & only real way to make sure there's no wheat AT ALL in anything I order to eat, is to say I'm celiac. Otherwise it's treated like a joke I've seen some amazing, remarkable health improvements since I cut wheat from my life. To the point that when i tested it w/ a weekend of wheat infected foods, (it really is an insidious ingredient that's made its way into WAY more foods than you might think possible), it took approx 10 days to get back to my normal levels of "new" health. Monday/Tuesday was like a bloated hangover sans the pain & I was cloudy/foggy & lethargic for the next week. Strangely enough I recognised these symptoms as how I'd always lived previously, but as I'd no wheat free benchmark to measure against I thought this was normal (like so many others in the world). I know differently now (especially after having added Wheat Belly by Dr William Davis to my nutritional arsenal).

Wow, all this over a dislike of peanut butter. My husband loved peanuts and had an extreme dislike of peanut butter. He did love peanut butter cookies, however. I never questioned it and neither did any of our friends and family. This all seems really blown out of proportion. I believe we're all allowed to have our own preferences without having to justify them to anyone else.

She hurt no one. She took nothing away from anyone. When she tried to deal with the issue directly, people were jerks and wouldn't listen. So she simplified her life and paid a small consequence. The bigger problem is the jerks who wouldn't accept her taste preferences. It's similar to, but on a much smaller scale to men who won't take a woman's no for an answer until she says she has a boyfriend or husband. Many women have to use this lie just to get men to leave them alone. That in no way diminishes anyone's marriage or relationship. People have to do this all the time when confronted with entitled jerks who think their view of the world is the only correct one.

I haven't read all of the comments here but I can say this. I am a chef and I have seen the strangest "allergies". People do it all the time. Just say you are allergic, it will pop up on the cooks screens in bold print. I take allergies very seriously as a cook even if they don't seem legit. Allergic to kale, allergic to salt, allergic to chives, allergic to guacamole. Just because someone lies and says they are allergic to something you know they can't possibly be, it doesn't change anything for me. I cook to order. The people sending her hate mail are idiots. She did absolutely no harm to people with real peanut allergies. Us chefs don't play with that no matter what. If you are "allergic" to French fries but not a potato with sour cream and chives, that's what I'm putting on your plate.

"Faking alergies isn't cute". Well, beeing blamed because you don't like something isn't cute either ! I don't like spicy food. But could handle it till my late 20s and have sometimes something not too spicy. Than one of a sudden I started to feel very very bad everytime I ate something that was even a little bit spicy. So, if I say "I don't eat spicy food", most people would tell me "this is not spicy", but in fact IT IS ! But my detector for spicy is just higher than the one of my friends. So I had to start "lying" and say I am alergic, cause otherwise people would keep saying "its not spicy", and I end up feeling sick the whole night !! She was not making fun or pretend to ofend any person with real alergies, but if people do not respect you diferent tastes or illnes it will cause, what else shall we do??? I'm totally with her <3

I totally understand her situation. I personally hate plain milk! I think it is disgusting by itself, and when I was a teenager I blamed a health issue I had on milk so people wouldn't make me drink it. Thing is, I was never allergic to milk. I cook with it all the time, making fluffy omelets, huge pancakes, pastries, doughnuts, pizzas coated thick with cheese, and crusts that you could never believe. Cow's milk has amazing powers. I just hate drinking it. I do like cereal, so I have Silk Vanilla Soymilk every morning. I'm not much into Soya, but Silk is great.

What cute story. Let the haters hate. This hurts no one. The same people hating on her are probably the type of person to disrespect someone's boundaries when they say they don't like a certain food. That's some real love and dedication from her husband. People are stupid complaint about her. There are people in this world who just don't know boundaries and will literally harass you about why who what and where if you tell them something like "I don't like peanut butter" but if you tell the same person "I'm allergic " they'll back up. I totally understand why she did this. I am a highly sensitive person to things like plants and plant based lotions and herbal supplements etc. It gets annoying and frustrating. As a society we need to acknowledge people with sensitivity's or allergies. I can't use acne cream, or most lotions or any skin care products. I have to read every ingredient. It'd be nice if people had more awareness about things like allergies because I feel left out.

Never explain yourself. The place in your brain that secretes that response is dangerously close to the place of unbridled sarcasm, which is far more cleansing than explaining yourself. If you feel you must, ask them why they need to know? Or say its related to sex then just smile and turn away.

Several things wrong here. She shouldn't have to lie about it, harassing people for not liking something is wrong. That being said, you should still not do it. Putting up with having to have the same discussion a few times is something that happens in life, especially when meating new people, and shouldn't be a major source of irritation. If you tell people "I don't want to talk about it" they usually respect it too so you can always use that to cut out of it if you really don't want to talk about it. Last thing, please don't doubt people who claim they have allergies, you're just making life harder for the people who do in fact have it, but I think that's fairly obvious

But as I'd no wheat free benchmark to measure against I thought this was normal (like so many others in the world). I know differently now (especially after having added Wheat Belly by Dr William Davis to my nutritional arsenal). If I'm out, the easiest & only real way to make sure there's no wheat AT ALL in anything I order to eat, is to say I'm celiac. Otherwise it's treated like a joke

The whole reason she lied about an allergy is because people judged her and tried to force their own opinions about how great PNB is on her. Now she's getting judged for lying. I suspect her apology will be judged. And now this comment will be judged. If only people would mind their own business this would be a sunny world indeed! Ps awesome M&M stealing husband :)

I hate potatoes - particularly mashed - but I like french fries. If I had a dollar for every time I heard "but you know French Fries are made of potatoes right?" I could have paid off my student loan debt by now. I can't help it that the smell and feel of mashed potatoes makes me gag. And I'll be honest, if claiming that I have a potato allergy would get people to back off so I didn't have to try and explain my inexplicable detest of that disgusting root, I would do it.

Tell them that you got really sick after eating a peanut better sandwich and was throwing it up all night and not think of vomit when you eat peanut butter. Make sure the story is gross and detailed. Tell them you had to clean it the peanut butter off the floor mixed with vomit. (FYI this works for any food or beverage you don't like that people try to convince you to like). They will not press you further. Also saying a food sometimes gives you uncontrollable gas. They will not try to get you to eat it.

The problem is that when people lie about allergies and get found out, they make it more dangerous for those of us with life threatening allergies. The reason for this is that if we tell a waiter we are allergic to an ingredient they think we mean we just do not like it, so do not take care to ensure the product does not end up in our food. Have been hospitalised several times because of this. It is generally women who are the culprits. She is an idiot but death threats are going too far.

To a certain extent, I can see her point. I do the exact thing with milk. Here's the deal: I LOVE milk and dairy products. But for almost a decade now, I've become sensitive to it. I can't drink even as much as half a glass of normal milk without being in severe pain. However, I can still eat food prepared with regular milk. The amount I'm able to consume depends on what we're talking about (e.g. I can have pasta alla carbonara, or *one* ice cream, but no lassi), how stressed I am, if I've been ill recently, etc. Each day, after years of living with my condition, I instinctively know just how much dairy I'm able to consume before my body breaks down. Do I feel like explaining this every single time to everyone? No. I simply say I'm allergic to milk. tl;dr: While technically I won't (immediately) die from milk, since I have a problem digesting it, I simply go and say I'm allergic.

I get where she's coming from though. Beer makes me sick but I'm not really allergic. I have a slight sensitivity to an ingredient. When I tell people I don't drink beer, they FREAK out like it's the most insane thing they've ever heard. It's infuriating and degrading and after years of dealing with these idiots, I switched my explanation to I CAN'T drink beer instead of "I don't." They usually accept it as an allergy and leave me alone.

it's ok that she doesn't like the smell of peanut butter. it's ok that to save her time and having to 'argue' as to why she doesn't (which is fine, you don't have to like everything, really) she says she's allergic, what's not ok is how outraged people get at literally anything. it's like if I decided to spell peenut like this, someone somewhere would eat their computer and throw themselves down the stairs because of my hatred of the english language. here's a thing, try not caring about every little thing you see and hear, it's really ok, nobody will mind. also, peenut.

I can tell you right now that when you tell a person about your allergy they will be just as annoying as the person saying " eat it" I usually get " I would kill my self if I was allergic to peanuts, no offense" or " but like what happens if you eat it?" I have thought about doing this myself.

Maybe then people won't need to "hide" to avoid petty conflicts, or jump on the latest food bandwagon just to feel special.

ive encountered this problem with wheat.

Sounds like she might actually have at least a sensitivity to peanut butter. However, no one is obliged to give a long explanation why they don't like to eat something - EVER. You just have to say you don't like it, end of conversation.

Of course she doesn't want to explain projectile vomiting to everybody. The lady don't like peanut butter, just be Ok with that. And yes, she lied but people are just too sensitive... I'm so angry that the internet yelled so much at her that she started to feel bad and wrote an apology.
