Pauline Chernichaw: Bridging Color And Form

“Artists have the need and passion to create. It is who we are.” This statement encapsulates Pauline Chernichaw, an evocative contemporary artist with an unyielding urge to express the vast landscape of human experience. Her early years were marked by significant change when her family relocated to New York City—a move that would profoundly influence her artistic trajectory. The cultural environment of New York provided Chernichaw with a wealth of inspiration, shaping her distinctive artistic voice.

Chernichaw pursued her formal art education at the University of Miami and later at Brooklyn College, where she enhanced her skills. Her thirst for knowledge and creativity did not stop there; she further expanded her repertoire at the International Center of Photography and New York University. This diverse educational background equipped her with a multifaceted approach to art, blending techniques from painting and photography to create a singular visual language.

Through her portfolio of intense hues and bold abstracts, Chernichaw challenges viewers to consider their own experiences. Her intuitive gestures speak to an instinctive desire for refuge, embodying both the physical and emotional spaces we create to expose or shield ourselves from external pressures. By masterfully manipulating shapes and colors, she creates an atmosphere that oscillates between serenity and tension, mirroring inner conflicts.

Reflecting her recurring themes of protection and introspection, Chernichaw’s aberrational series titled “Cocoon” is characterized by powerfully abstract forms encased in a cocoon-like environment. Using a drastically limited color palette and organically rooted shapes, she captures the essence of human vulnerability and the universal longing for safety and comfort.

Pauline Chernichaw has established a sincere voice that mirrors her personal history and familial influences while also echoing universal themes. As she continues to evolve as an artist, Chernichaw remains committed to exploring the delicate balance between exposure and protection, inviting us all to consider our own positions in a complex world.

Hey there, Pandas! My name is Diana (though some prefer to refer to me as Diane, Deanna, and even Liana sometimes), and I am a Community Post Moderator Lead for Bored Panda. As my position title states, I am one of the people (employed Pandas for bamboo) over here who work with the community side of things on this website to ensure all is well, and while at that, I also help various creators and artists get recognition for the incredible work they do by connecting them to a large worldwide audience. Other than that, outside of work, you can find me brewing a nice cup of coffee, making a pizza from scratch, or baking brownies. I also love traveling, concerts, and cats (heavy on that, because I am a cat mom).
