They say raising a pet strengthens a couple’s bond and can even prepare them for parenthood. However, in the case of this woman, it has led to a terrible fallout.

In a post on the subreddit ‘True Off My Chest,’ she explained that everything started with her having to leave the house for a couple of days.

When she returned, however, the father of her child told her that he had gotten rid of her beloved dog because she was being too much of a nuisance.

People who abandon their pets do it in hiding so that others don’t know they’re capable of such a despicable act

But when this woman’s dog went missing, she learned that it was actually the father of her child who dumped her

In a 2023 survey on what folks think about their pets, more than a third of people with dogs answered that their K9 is more important than a significant other, and over two-thirds said they would end a relationship if their partner didn’t allow their dog around as much as they’d like.

“As a pet lover, I do think it’s important your significant other gets along with your pet,” dating coach Blaine Anderson told Bored Panda. “I’d hazard that there’s a direct relationship between how well someone treats your pets, and how caring of a partner they’d make. It can be a proxy for empathy.

“Obviously, the ability to bond with your pet is just one trait within a broader mosaic you need to consider, though. For example, if someone you’re seeing is literally perfect aside from the fact that they’re allergic to your dog, that might still be OK. Not everyone is a pet person, too,” Blaine, who can also be found on Instagram, added.

This particular time, the man cited barking and peeing inside as the primary causes of his decision to get rid of the pet; however, it’s unlikely the pointer started exhibiting these behaviors out of nowhere. You don’t just get rid of a dog when it starts doing something you don’t like; instead, it’s crucial to understand the root cause and address it appropriately. You help your family members, not discard them.

If you do have any concerns about the way your partner treats your pet, Blaine suggests you bring them up while trying to be direct but open-minded. “Whether or not someone grew up with pets is probably a huge contributor to how attentive they are to pets as an adult, so if your partner doesn’t seem to be a good pet parent, it may be more lack of experience than anything else,” she explained, excluding the radical cases.

“It’s OK to talk about it if it’s on your mind. If your significant other can’t respect that making an effort with your pet is important to you, that’s a much bigger red flag than their default treatment of your pet!”

The man’s hatred of the dog may have been a result of a deeper problem

Couples therapist Mary Kay Cocharo believes that, like with any issue that comes up in an intimate relationship, it’s important to explore the underlying meaning behind ill feelings towards your partner’s pet.

“Sometimes the hater actually feels jealous of the time and attention being paid to the animal,” she said. “He or she may feel that the pet draws energy away from their connection. In that case, it’s important to explore how the couple is connecting on a day-to-day basis. Do they have enough time together? Do they sleep together without the pet? Has the pet taken on resentment about other unmet needs?”

People who read the story were disgusted by the man’s actions

The woman later shared a happy ending to the story

It’s really heartwarming to hear that the animal was reunited with its owner safely. Usually, abandoning pets has far-reaching consequences.

“Abandonment exposes dogs … to an uncertain fate,” writes Four Paws, a global welfare organization for animals under direct human influence. “Once on the streets, they must fend for themselves and may suffer from hunger, thirst, injuries, and diseases as well as feeling distressed and confused because they have been left on their own in an unfamiliar place by their owner.”

Furthermore, dumping animals has consequences for the community that many people are often unaware of. According to Four Paws, the animals may pose a road safety risk if they run out in front of cars, and they may cause an “annoyance” to the community by searching for food, interacting with other dogs, or even getting into fights with someone due to feeling unsafe.

As 2023 came to a close, there were 250,000 more animals in the American shelter system than the year before, and many of them were pups. In times of economic hardship, dogs (and horses) are impacted the most, as larger animals are costlier to take care of, said Mike Keiley, vice president of the animal protection division at MSPCA-Angell, a nonprofit that runs four shelters across Massachusetts that saw a 40% increase in local dog owners surrendering their pets last year.

I wish this poor woman all the best, and I hope her ex is only allowed supervised visitation with that kid. Dumping a dog like this shows extreme lack of empathy and compassion. There's no excuse. Also, the dog peeing in the house? That makes me think he was neglecting to let it out when she wasn't around, or outright abusing it. She should be asking herself how many times did she come home to find the baby in a wet nappy, or crying in their crib because ex-partner didn't want to deal with them.

OK, I'm sorry that OP now faces a very difficult situation and I wish her te best, but at the same time I'm insanely happy that the dog has been found. I'm not in favour of capital punishment, but if there are moments I have doubts, this is one of them. To leave the pet that has been your companion for years, alone and frightened somewhere in a wood or at the side of a road is unforgivable. I would never, ever, talk to my husband, boyfriend or parents again. If you can do that, you don't have a heart. Simple and end of story.

My husband isn't a cat person, definitely wasn't before we got ours. But now, he is adamant that she won't go outside for fear of her getting hit by car or hurt by another animal. When she walked up on our balcony ledge, he would grab her because he was scared she would fall. When we're out of her breakfast wet food, he will let her have a can of his tuna stash. Because you don't have to like pets to be a decent person who treats them well.

If a creature passing for a human being feels justified in abandoning an animal that "annoys" him, what is to prevent him from transferring that same "annoyance" to a child or an infant? Remember, the most heinous serial killers in history started out by torturing and killing children and small animals. OP's ex shouldn't be trusted with a houseplant. I hope this follows him around for the rest of his days, and beyond.

An unfortunate truth is that when people show you who they are, believe them. He showed himself to be a conceited irresponsible partner with no regard for your wishes or happiness, and it would only have been the first in an ever growing list of such incidents if you had stayed with him. His first reaction to seek sole custody is the only confirmation you would ever need.

My ex-husband did the same with my 5-pound toy Yorkiepoo. He dropped her three towns over during rush hour close to a major highway. A teenager was walking home from school and saw her get hit by a car; thank god she was ok. She called her parents at work and made them come home and take her to the vet. I had had her for three years, from 6 weeks old, and had not microchipped her yet. It took me six days and the help of a lady to whom I handed a flyer at a gas station who ran an organization in New Jersey that helps find lost pets, and within 3 hours of her posting on her Facebook page, I got a call from the family in Hamilton Township New Jersey. They had her, and I drove so fast to get her. Thanks to that beautiful young girl, my Liberty is still here and is now 14 years old. As for him, he was on his way out. It made it faster. I'm glad you got your dog back. My six days, she had me in hell.❤️❤️

If anyone else is in a similar situation: get evidence that the partner abandoned the dog (ie them admitting it on text or video) and then PLEASE REPORT THEM. It's a crime in so many places, for good reason. The police can also flag this as potential domestic abuse (abusing a family pet to hurt their partner).

I don't know where OP is from, but in my country is totally illegal to abandon a dog on the side of the road. If you catch someone doing it, you can easily report them to the authorities, and it's a criminal offence.

I tend to view these situations with a bit of a side eye. I want to know how often he told her the dog was causing issues only to be blown off. Because I'm betting it was a lot. People who view their dog as their "whole world" tend to be doing and excusing things they really shouldn't until the partner snaps and nopes out in a way designed to punish the dog owner for not listening. That he straight up told her and described the whole thing means there is a TON of resentment there, to the point where he wants to emotionally hurt her and rub it in her face for not taking the dog complaints seriously.

Typical abuser move. The birth of the baby probably made him feel like he had her well and trapped... so now his true colors start to show. He has no empathy, respect or consideration for anyone but himself and it would only get worse from then on.

You can tell alot about someone by how they treat the animals in their care. This story reminds me of my friend's dad who put her dog down while she was on a trip with her church group. Be claimed the dog had incontinence issues but the reality is-- the dog wasn't old, wasn't infirm-- but the dog had separation issues and was afraid of him because he had always been needlessly mean to the dog. Soft dogs need soft training-- be would scream at the little fluff ball ans it would pee itself. So the day she left for her trip, he took the dog to an emergency vet and told them the dog had been having seizures so they would put down the dog. She absolutely lost her mind after as the dog was a gift (never give dogs as a gift) from her mom who had recently died from cancer. To this day my friend hasn't been able to bring herself to get a new pet. It absolutely breaks my heart.

He sounds dangerous and not safe to stay with, so unless she got an emergency order immediately ordering him out, she needs to leave for her and her child's safety. A judge can order him out and she can move back in at a later date. They're physical safety right now is more important. Can't live in a house if you're not alive.

I am going to get that the red marks are from where she landed as he threw her out of a moving car. See if someone from the Humane Society or their Vet will be willing to testify as to the forensics found on the dog. Forty miles away with road rash is huge! It also speaks to his unfitness as a parent. OP should get primary custody and child support. He should get supervised visits only. I am also guessing that the pup was barking and peeing on the floor because she needed to go out and he was not inclined to let her out. Great excuse for getting rid of her. The next time that OP needs to go out of town, consider a boarding facility recommended by friends!

This sounds fake. Particularly for the reason that she didn't grab her kid and walk out the moment she found out her partner dumped her dog. But then also stayed with him long enough for him to say "we can get a new, better dog". Yea no, no one replies with "My partner sucks". Any normal person would be at the point of throwing hands if their partner ever did this.

Go out for a drive with partner, you driving. Make him get out of the car. Get the locks changed and toss him and all his things out.

Wow he is a piece of s**t trying for full custody. But if she can prove he abandoned the dog (which he likely will just admit to on his own) hed be lucky for visitations. Not to mention most states its near impossible for the father to win full custody as it is

Get an emergency order for custody and home occupation based on domestic violence - coercive control evidenced by harm to family pets and financial abuse and threats to withhold access to children. Document dogs injuries and any conversations with ex using the recording function on your phone. He lied about where he left the dog, that is how she was found somewhere else. This is all abuse. Normal people do not behave this way, please believe that. If you return to the family home yo care for your child while this is resolved, please temporarily home your dog with a safe friend or family. She is not safe with him. Peeing and barking are stress reacting. I suspect he has been abusing her. 😢 You baby should also be checked by a pediatrician for signs of abuse. Your local women's shelter can link you up with legal and medical resources and give advice on how to approach the situation with a domestic violence lens. You are not crazy, that is his emotional abuse invalidating you.

Abandoning an animal is against the law and punishable by a fine! I would turn him in and while he is dealing with the police, I would be packing up his belongings. Lose him. He is a pos.!!!

Take a road trip, go down a long road where there are no houses (preferably in the snow) stop the car, tell him get out, stay. Then drive away and go home.

Step 1. Take him for a nice afternoon ride to the country and dump his sorry a*s , speed away while flipping him off Step 2. Never let this cretin near you or your child, he will dispose of you both once you become a bother or annoying. Keep searching for your good Boi, Keep going back to where he was dumped, place familiar objects with his and your scent on them in the are, he will be trying to get home by scent. Good luck

There are no words for how heartless that piece if c**p is. If she would ever be so kind as to drop his name and where he lives I'm sure there's enough of us animal lovers out there that could remedy his mistake. All dogs want to do is give you love. They trust and love without hesitation most of the time caring more for you than they do themselves. To be such gutless trash you would abandon a innocent animal like that shows what kind of dickless A hole he is. I hope karma pays him back the rest of his life

That m**o would have caught hands or got beaten with a pillowcase full of oranges while he was in a deep sleep. My dogs are my babies and if my ex would have done something like this I'd probably would have ended up in jail. If he thinks he is getting custody he is dreaming she can have the shelter file charges for abuse and photo evidence along with vet record will show the judge this dude can't be trusted. Seriously I'm seeing red for this woman her pos ex seriously should be tied up in the woods and left for days just to see how it feels 🤬

Continue: : I have experience with an ex like this because I was given a puppy for my daughter and she was 2 and excited to have a puppy. I was teaching her how to be kind to her new furry friend and how to take care of her puppy, and my daughter would just smile and giggle because she loved that puppy. When I learned what a cruel person who stepfather was, I looked to rehome the puppy before he did anything to her. I had to go to the emergency room because I was really sick and while I was gone, that you know what took that puppy and dumped her on the side of the road and he had my daughter with him. My daughter when I came home was crying for her puppy and she told me what happened because my daughter talked early and she talked like an adult, so I understood what she told me. I yelled at him and he thought it was funny, and picked on my daughter for crying. I left him soon after that. What he did to that puppy still haunts me and I start crying because I wasn't there to stop him.

If my ex ever did that to my 3 Fur Babies I make sure that no one ever found him like he did my babies, but I'm lucky that he loves animals and we're even roommates because we didn't want to split our babies up and get confused why the other one wasn't there, and why they had to go to two different places to see us. This man if you can even call him that is an evil, cruel person, and I agree that he might do something one day if he considered that you or your child were being a bother. She was probably urinating in the house because he didn't walk her like he should have or she was under stress or afraid of him. She was probably barking due to the same thing. Consult with a lawyer if he won't leave, and you loving your Fur Baby doesn't mean that you're crazy, it means that you're a loving and kind person. It also means that Heaven forbid that your child is ever missing, that you won't stop until find your child because you're also very responsible too. I'm glad that she's back with y

She stated her husband was alone when he released the dog. So the part of her narrative where her dog was whimpering, and trying to get in the car can only come from her husband which is TBH a weird detail to share considering he was the perpetrator. Hm.

OMG I was so happy to read the end! I'm so glad you found your sweet girl. I was tearing up reading about the horrific, cruel, unthinkable and torturous way your (hopefully ex-) partner treated you and your pup. I have a 4 year old dog, Snacks, whom I love more than anything, and I was putting myself into your shoes. I would be absolutely heartbroken if anything happened to Snacks. Dogs are family. Your partner abused you (and really, society as a whole) by callously dumping a member of your family. I'm angry at him and I don't even know him! Dump the jerk and enjoy your reunification with your pup.

You're a weak fool. Of course you'll stay with him because you can't do better, sans child out of wedlock. Poor animal. The dog didn't deserve this. You'll get another dog because he told you to, and then you'll end up resenting and probably poisoning it. Mental cases shouldn't have pets.

LilliVB

I tend to view these situations with a bit of a side eye. I want to know how often he told her the dog was causing issues only to be blown off. Because I'm betting it was a lot. People who view their dog as their "whole world" tend to be doing and excusing things they really shouldn't until the partner snaps and nopes out in a way designed to punish the dog owner for not listening. That he straight up told her and described the whole thing means there is a TON of resentment there, to the point where he wants to emotionally hurt her and rub it in her face for not taking the dog complaints seriously.

Dog was probably peeing in the house because he couldn't be assed to let/take "her dog" out while also having to take care of a baby.

I was in the hospital and rehab. Mine didnt eat. When I got home he didn't leave my side not even during therapy even with my walker.

Good luck with him getting full custody with s history of dog dumping. The judge will see through that. This guy sounds selfish and unhinged. You might ask for an order of protection too.

Hope she does not leave the house! Stay with the child in the home. The court will make him leave after they hear the specifics.

Get him charged for animal cruelty, and mention it in the restraining order if you need to file one later. Change the locks, get him out of the house.

Ya know this man is a real joke. A real joke. The moment she and her friends mention how he just left a dog on the highway is the moment his "I'll get full custody" is gone. He'll be lucky to even tell his kids bye after the case is done. I hope this man steps in dog poop for the rest of eternity.

It's a felony to drop a dog on a highway. Animal cruelty and endangerment. Let him know so he can reconsider the finances ... or turn him in. https://www.nhes.org/felony-animal-cruelty-laws-in-all-50-states/

What the actual f$&@?? I would have him charges for animal cruelty and theft of my dog!! Make your notes now for your attorney later. Get away from this monster, and you have no worries about custody, anyone who dumps a pet on a highway is unsuitable to use air.

ANYONE WHO DUMPS A PET IS NO BETTER THAN A CHILD MOLESTER. I hope you find her. Please dump him. You have a child's safety to think of besides you. Your dog knew this is not a good person. Prayers..

You're still with him. Okay then YOU'RE THE AHOLE! I'd make him leave and not come back without the dog. Then I'd permanently kick his a*s out. Did you file a police report? No? You're a bigger AHOLE than before.
