Finding suitable childcare can be a real challenge for many parents. Especially when so many Americans don’t hide their suspicion towards their nannies; The Zebra survey has revealed that 4 in 5 Americans would record a nanny or pet sitter inside their home (79%).

Ongoing prejudice against babysitters, and the constant pressure so many parents put on them, all while navigating being a carer, a friend, a family member, and an employee at once is what makes babysitting probably one of the most demanding jobs out there.

But entitled parents make it way worse. Collected from the "Choosing Beggars" Reddit community, below are some of the worst nanny job offers posted online. From totally delusional requirements to offering $3/h for an experienced nanny with higher education, these posts scream only two things: “Run!” and “Now!”

If the babysitter fulfilled all of the requests, she'd probably be more qualified to look after the kids than the parents would.

Judging by the demands and implied personality of this advert, it makes me wonder, who would want to sleep with this person... four times? It defies logic. I mean, once is a mistake, but four? Wow.

Who says it is the same person that slept with her all four times? Maybe she likes to party and pray on guys being drunk beyond reason.

You're putting your children's lives in the hands of someone else and you won't pay more than $10 an hour 😐 your kids are worth $30 each to you... You can't even potty train your own kids. Try looking for a babysitter when youve managed to successfully do that...

Finding a babysitter for the very first time is a responsible moment mixed with nervous anticipation and excitement. After all, it’s the person you will be entrusting your child to. And while grandparents, friends and relatives seem like the perfect babysitters for some, in reality, welcoming a stranger to your family is a much more viable option for everyone.

But the challenge is not entrusting your child to the hand of a person you don’t really know but feel good about; the challenge is to find a good one and when you do, keep it in your family. However, many parents often commit babysitting sins, making the job a living nightmare for the nannies.

Entitled whiny military wives like this infuriate me and my family (military). And not only b/c she sounds like she's gonna go get wasted and come home too drunk/stoned to care for those kids, then demand the sitter stay over. Been there, seen that. It's why Mom said we moved to the farm or else after she was out. My dad could do his thing, and we wouldn't be around that stuff.

I agree she should just fill out the paperwork, but I don't think this falls into the same category as others near the top of the list. My sister had 6 kids (one adopted, the 6th one a surprise). She was on a base in Japan while her husband was deployed to Iraq. She home schooled, like a lot of military families. She never got a moment's break. That's what people don't get. Even if she was sick, she was up at 6 and spent every waking moment mothering. She loved it and didn't complain, but she became so exhausted that she became really ill. Close to the point of becoming ill, she was probably too tired to fill out paperwork.

Wow, if someone didn't want kids maybe they shouldn't have had any. With this ladies concept of being "just done" with paperwork, yet wants a total stranger in her house... it almost sounds like she wants something bad to happen to her kids. (yes, I am well aware that parents need breaks or "me time" too. But this is kind of taking the cake for me)

This is what welfare and social safety net programs do. They create crutches for employers to lean on. They know that low-income people will get TAX PAYER MONEY so they purposely underpay an employee knowing they'll get the rest of their living expense from someone else.

Little things count. Inviting neighborhood kids without adding extra pay, or being late without warning and not offering any monetary compensation are among common faux pas. Some parents even seek to pay their nannies with goods and/or food rather than money. Being clear about payment from the very first day, whether it’s the transfer date or the exact sum of money, is crucial in order not to make it awkward well into the job.

Well you cannot kill a dead person, so even badly performed CPR is better than nothing. With a cardiac arrest the minuttes are critical, and in most cases fast CPR is what is the difference between life and death. Even those short CPR courses save lives, so go ahead and sign up for one (it is not that scarry). Saving a life feels really good, and you'll never live with the guilt of not trying at least.

When my kids were younger we couldn't afford a babysitter. We were blessed to have both my parents and my husband's mother living close so we had people willing to watch our kids at no fee. We did things like make them dinner or do a project or chore with them oh, and we always thanked them profusely even when they said it wasn't necessary. But the times the grandparents weren't available? Since we couldn't afford a babysitter we just stayed home. None of this shaming and trying to make other people do it for free

They chose to have kids, if they can't find a babysitter last second then deal with it and take them with you. We don't have family to babysit for us so very rarely have a break from our kids, but that's called BEING A PARENT and is something you do until they're old enough to look after themselves.

This person was being very logical. But unfortunately with family a lot of times they don't care about logic, relationship is supposed to be god. So they all flipped out completely ignoring the fact they were asking this person to lose money. I hate that families treat people with no children as if they're not allowed to have needs, preferences, or good pay. I experienced this prejudice at my job, when I had questions about whether I was being paid my true value. My boss went on this rant about "if you need more money to take care of your family, fine, go," knowing I didn't have kids. Just being married and having kids does not automatically make you more important than the next person who doesn't. I say that as someone who is now married. I hope I never make anyone feel like that.

Paying 35 dollars an hour to someone to take care of the most precious things in your life is ridiculous? You are NOT an ass for giving that number. There is no way I would refuse to pay someone that much to take care of my children just so I could "get out." If I can't afford it, I don't go out. I paid someone to come live in my house for a week to take care of my pups. I gave her five hundred dollars for, basically, living in my house, feeding my dogs and keeping an eye on them. I also gave her 500 bucks for "expenses." She had the use of my cars, cable, internet, our son lives next door and I trusted her completely to keep an eye on my pups and "notice" if something was wrong. I bought her a new laptop and she was able to still go to "private" grooming jobs, and her duties at the house was just for my dogs. I trusted her and did not even consider asking her to do it for free. Oh, and I pay for her dog's vet bills, to this day.

Communication is key and not every babysitter can immediately pick up what you want them to do for their child. Guessing games usually don’t lead anywhere, so the first days should be spent together introducing your lifestyle, family habits, things the kid likes or doesn’t, as well as showing them around the house. Making sure you’re clear about routines and expectations will make their job easier and your mind clear.

But experts say communication should not stop at the introduction week. Maintaining a good, healthy bond with your babysitter is key, even if that means remodeling some things that don’t work. For example, if a late return is going to put your babysitter in a difficult position with public transport, then it’s worth thinking how you can help—whether by paying for a taxi, or offering to drive them home.

If this cheap dumbass wanted 'affordable' maybe they shouldn't have had a kid. I don't have a kid of my own but I understand from friends and family that they are cheaper than a sports car but more expensive than a season ticket. And once you start a family, there's no way that you can afford either.

Over time theyre probably not cheaper than a sports car. In 2019 in the UK, the average cost of raising someony just to the age of 18 was £151,000. Thats over £8k every year. Now remember this in in the uk where we dont pay for healthcare, oh and in scotland all public education is free at the point of use(including university). So, imagine if you're paying for schooling and health on top of that?! I'll have a sportscar please 😊

Gigantic red flag when I saw the words “he’s a very sweet boy who loves to run around and play”, it struck me as code for “I’m exhausted and need a break from my f*****g nightmare of a hyperactive toddler, who is out of control and constantly destructive, so you have to keep your eye on him 100% of the time you’re there. Also, I lied about you being able to take your breaks when he sleeps, because he NEVER sleeps. Never ever sleeps. Or stops. Or slows down, Even to eat. Never.” RUN! Run as far away from this family, and their spawn of the devil child, as you possibly can!

Some parents are very lazy with this. You basically just have to put your kid on the potty every time you go in there to start and then every hour or two after a few months. Make it a fun time and praise them for whatever they offer the potty gawd. My son and daughter were trained before they were 2. Pur that cheerio in the toilet for the boy to aim at! I don't get why parents are so lazy. It would make their life easier.

I started babysitting when I was 12. I am the oldest of five kids, so I had plenty of experience taking care of kids. I charged 50 cents an hour. BUT I was NOT treated like a live in slave with no legal options. I am horrified to read these want ads. Besides, "professional" babysitters were called "Nannies" when I was younger. A baby sitter was someone who lived in your neighborhood, who you knew, whose parents you knew and who you could trust. Generally a teenager who was working to make extra money. People, today, for the most part, fail to become "neighbors" in cities, they isolate themselves and assume that everyone is "out to get them." For the most part, today's parents are children themselves and playing at being parents.

I hate when ppl think babysitting, fast food, etc are not real jobs. (If they were fake job, they'd pay in Monopoly money. Hehe) If ppl got 'real jobs', then there wouldn't be anyone left in these jobs to help everyone else! No one to watch your kids so you can work yourself to pay your bills. No one to make that happy meal for your kids because you're too tired today to want to cook. These jobs may not be what someone wants to do or pay that much, but they are real jobs and definitely serve a purpose to be there for anyone who needs them.

I come from a military family in the US. We do NOT worship them. My family is appalled by this crap, and dislikes the whole idea of "military are entitled". No, we do not serve our nation to be treated like we're special... I cannot speak for others, but this is not okay behavior with a LOT of people, including those in the military.

It's at limited bases from what I've seen, if there's a need for it and if enough wives/family volunteer for the program. And yes, they have you fill out forms to cover everyone's a**. Most bases do have regular daycare, but that's like 0600-1800 maybe, and you pay according to you and/your spouse's rank.

In 1978 I got $1/hour for babysitting, but it was a different age, I knew the people and I was 15. No way would I take $2.50 an hour now, especially for what is basically a full time job.

Less than two bucks an hour. I'd do it for free for a close friend or relative in a bind, and have, but for a paid gig this is a joke. Look into subsidized daycare.

Wait until your 8-year-old grows up to be an adult. When she is 18, send her back in time to when she was 8. She can then look after herself and you can go off thinking about flying pink hippos or whatever. So, if we compare your advert to my - let's call it a 'scheme' - then it will be pretty clear that my 'scheme' offers a far greater chance of scoring you a babysitter than your advert ever will.

yup, the lucky person gets to live there for free in the 6-20 hours they watch the kid and do housework. And they have to pay 60 $ a week to rent their room the rest of the time. Basically a room for rent (with some strict rules), that is paid for with housework, taking care of the 6 year old and 60 $ a week. Lucky lucky to get that job..

Where I live a 3 bedroom apartment on the low end costs $2,200 a month but most are closer to $2,500 so $1,500 a month would be a steal. It really depends on your area whether this could be a good deal. But the babysitting aspect is weird and too vague on how much babysitting they actually expect.

The only way this could work is if a group of mums got together and all chipped in for one of them to look after everyones kids. I can see taking care of your own kid +3 more for $90 per day, but one-on-one, that's not happening.

    Hannah Marshall
    Community Member
4 years ago (edited) Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

I look after one 2 year year old for $30 a day (for 6 hours) but he comes to me between 1 and 3 days a week. Sometimes he doesn't come at all if his mum doesn't work. I also look after two 4 year olds for $30 a day for 4-7 hours, per child, (usually from 9am til 4pm) and $40 for 8+ hours (7:45am til 5pm) per child, in my own home. Parents provide food, sunscreen, spare clothes, water. I provide the toys and entertainment. I look after them for 2 days a week. Daycare is $450 a month for part time hours. So for 2 kids, they're paying $900 a month - and a lot of people here, in Canada, aren't working, or are on low income due to Covid, so me charging between $4 and $5+ an hour is ideal for them, if they're on unemployment.

If it's going to be a group, there are babysitting coops that are free. You get paid by "tickets" or some such per hour per kid you watch someone else's child, and then if someone is available to watch your child, you pay them in tickets. So it's an exchange, but with specific rules. I was in one for several years and it was terrific. I met a bunch of nice neighbors, and we all had occasional babysitting when we needed it without paying for it. But not all day every day, ever! That's just delusional!

In the U.S., workers are struggling for a livable wage. Note, that's different than a family wage. (Google it.) We used to have ample jobs that could support a family. No longer. We let wages stagnate. $12/hr may be what the parents are getting paid, but it's ridiculous to value a sitter's time significantly less than that.

Just to highlight that final (fully readable) comment. The high cost of childcare is EXACTLY the reason some mums in the UK don't return to work. Of course this is professional day care costs, not a babysitter on FB. This has/is changing with the introduction of free childcare places for 2 & 3 year olds (the government pays the nursery instead of the parent). When my friend (who had a reasonable paying office job) returned to work after having her daughter, after paying the nursery (which wasn't a high-end one), she had £20 a week remaining from her take home pay. Wasn't worth it.

Depending on how the nursery rates are applied, you may also be subsidising the cost of looking after the younger babies. I believe the ratios have changed, but when I (briefly) worked in a nursery, it was one carer to 3 babies under 1 year old, (I've forgotten the 1-3 ratio as I never worked that department) and one carer to eight 3-4 year olds. One senior member of staff per department, but the rest were minimum wage workers like me. So it costs a lot more money to look after babies, because you need proportionally more staff. Let's say minimum wage is £10/hr (to make the maths easier! And I'm rounding the percentages.). One carer works 8 hours. If they are working the baby section, their wages make up 50% of the charge (£54 x 3 babies = £162. Staff cost £80). If they work the toddler section, their wage is just 20% (£54 x 8 toddlers = £432. Staff cost still £80). And that's *just* staff cost, not food, building rates, admin and all the other costs of doing business out of the home.

my sister stopped working because it's cheaper for her to stay home with her kids than to pay for daycare/babysitting. i'm not saying babysitters shouldn't charge a decent amount for their hard work and time- $15-20/hr seems reasonable to me. I'm just trying to provide a different perspective.

Well, traditionally, you would have a 13-15 year old sitting on the sofa watching tv, pay them less than minimum wage, and one of the employers drives them home at the end of the night. And they will still want $10 an hour. You want an adult, who can drive themself, has referrences, car, CPR cert, etc, they're going to have more options.

That is two of the animal shelters in spain that ask you to be a "volunteer" for 40h a week (thats a free worker not a volunteer) and you need to pay them rent!
