Finding suitable childcare can be a real challenge for many parents. Especially when so many Americans don’t hide their suspicion towards their nannies; The Zebra survey has revealed that 4 in 5 Americans would record a nanny or pet sitter inside their home (79%).

Ongoing prejudice against babysitters, and the constant pressure so many parents put on them, all while navigating being a carer, a friend, a family member, and an employee at once is what makes babysitting probably one of the most demanding jobs out there.

But entitled parents make it way worse. Collected from the "Choosing Beggars" Reddit community, below are some of the worst nanny job offers posted online. From totally delusional requirements to offering $3/h for an experienced nanny with higher education, these posts scream only two things: “Run!” and “Now!”

Finding a babysitter for the very first time is a responsible moment mixed with nervous anticipation and excitement. After all, it’s the person you will be entrusting your child to. And while grandparents, friends and relatives seem like the perfect babysitters for some, in reality, welcoming a stranger to your family is a much more viable option for everyone.

But the challenge is not entrusting your child to the hand of a person you don’t really know but feel good about; the challenge is to find a good one and when you do, keep it in your family. However, many parents often commit babysitting sins, making the job a living nightmare for the nannies.

Little things count. Inviting neighborhood kids without adding extra pay, or being late without warning and not offering any monetary compensation are among common faux pas. Some parents even seek to pay their nannies with goods and/or food rather than money. Being clear about payment from the very first day, whether it’s the transfer date or the exact sum of money, is crucial in order not to make it awkward well into the job.

They chose to have kids, if they can't find a babysitter last second then deal with it and take them with you. We don't have family to babysit for us so very rarely have a break from our kids, but that's called BEING A PARENT and is something you do until they're old enough to look after themselves.

This person was being very logical. But unfortunately with family a lot of times they don't care about logic, relationship is supposed to be god. So they all flipped out completely ignoring the fact they were asking this person to lose money. I hate that families treat people with no children as if they're not allowed to have needs, preferences, or good pay. I experienced this prejudice at my job, when I had questions about whether I was being paid my true value. My boss went on this rant about "if you need more money to take care of your family, fine, go," knowing I didn't have kids. Just being married and having kids does not automatically make you more important than the next person who doesn't. I say that as someone who is now married. I hope I never make anyone feel like that.

Paying 35 dollars an hour to someone to take care of the most precious things in your life is ridiculous? You are NOT an ass for giving that number. There is no way I would refuse to pay someone that much to take care of my children just so I could "get out." If I can't afford it, I don't go out. I paid someone to come live in my house for a week to take care of my pups. I gave her five hundred dollars for, basically, living in my house, feeding my dogs and keeping an eye on them. I also gave her 500 bucks for "expenses." She had the use of my cars, cable, internet, our son lives next door and I trusted her completely to keep an eye on my pups and "notice" if something was wrong. I bought her a new laptop and she was able to still go to "private" grooming jobs, and her duties at the house was just for my dogs. I trusted her and did not even consider asking her to do it for free. Oh, and I pay for her dog's vet bills, to this day.

35 a hour for family seems a bit rough to me but it is your time so you can ask for whatever you want, but me personally wouldn’t even accept payment for doing family members a favor, but we have different family’s and values, yours seems to be more about money where as mine is more about helping family when I can, nothing wrong with either of our approaches, just depends on the person

Wrong. You’re trying to make her look like the bad guy, and she’s not. Her family was trying to take advantage of her. If she’d agreed to do this for little or no pay, bet you a nickel they’d be blowing up her phone or knocking on her door every time they needed a babysitter, and they would be appalled and offended if she said no or asked for a higher rate. They KNEW they needed a sitter beforehand and thought they could get free child care. She did the absolute right thing.

Obviously not the right person for that kind of job. I she can earn more doing some programming, which she is trained to do, then that is what she should do. Having an overqualified person babysit is just a waste of talent/education, and if you insist on doing it, then just pay the hourly rate that comes with that requirement. Having her work for 15$/h would be her doing a favor and not something you are entitled to demand, why the heckt do you think she should loose money by working for you? It is your children and hence your responsibility to take care of the. If your family wants to assist you with the task, then fine, otherwise let the control their own time and do not burden them.

I get asking for a relative with nothing planned to watch the kids for a day for little to no pay, yes it is a sacrifice to some degree but that is what family does and getting to know your young relatives is a good payoff. Of course "no" should always be a graciously accepted option, and if it was my kids, any hesitation I would take a sign that it is probably not a great arrangement. I want someone who is comfortable and willing to be with my kids, wouldn't want it to be a drag for them or the sitter. But for 3 FULL DAYS with no prior arrangement, even for pay, that is total overkill. They are the entitled ones for asking for that, for any pay. And why would old friends not want to meet the kids? That makes me suspicious, there is plenty to do that is child friendly, so it makes it sound like the kids are a handful as well.

$35 is a lot to pay for a baby sitter but they sprung it on her last minute and she already had work plans. It's understandable to ask for that much in that situation. If they weren't willing to pay that much they should find a different baby sitter. Also never make the assumption someone is going to be able to babysit for you last minute and then get upset if they can't.

Not an a**hole for asking to be paid. However different jobs have different rates. I don’t know the hourly rate for babysitting in the US. Then you can decide if its worth it or not.

Did they tell you the $15 per hour babysitting is just for the first kid? Each additional child is $5 to $7.50 per hour extra depending on the ages and how much the sitter has to do to look after them? So 3 kids, $15 for the first, $7.50 per kid after that, you would have been at $30 per hour if they paid the going rates.Even if they managed to get a cut rate babysitter at the $15 starting rate with a $5 per kid extra they would have been at $25 per hour. Sounds like family though they had a sucker on the line. As you were willing to put paying work on hold to babysit, the extra $5 (or $10 if they are used to taking advantage of their sitter) is a small extra fee to have you babysit so they could avoid their kids and go "hang out"

Value yourself and your time as you will and if they don't like it, they can stuff it. 24 year old WOMEN are allowed to do such things for themselves.

i am so sorry, I learnt this on the hard way, myself. your time, your dime. you are the only person who can value your time, It seems perfectly legit for me, as you didn't asked for a certain amount, i don't know, having on mind that with the money resulted you will finally go onto a nice vacation that you normally can't afford or something. you valued your time considering all the work that you normally do. It's their own problem for not seeing your true value. Could have said that you are very expensive for them and they can't afford that, not calling you stupid, etc. No worries, the problem lies with them, you are perfectly fine. Go forward with all that you planned for yourself! Keep it up!

Nope. I have this problem with my sister in law too. She recently started a small business doing birthday parties, which is super great!. She has three children 7mnth, 4 years and 6 years. She messages me last minute asking if I can babysit the kids while she does a party. No, actually I cant - I have my own work to do and a client deadline the next day. She gets upset and says but you will have your kids anyway, so what difference does it make. Alot actually, my kids are 8 and 10. They can can go to the playground across the street where I can see them from my home office. They can independantly go to the toilet or get a piece of fruit without my input. Your children are not capable of any of those things and would require me to give up my whole afternoon and push my client deadline back a week and risk a signifcant contract penalty, so unless you are willing to pay me the value of the contract penalty then No. Apparently I am the selfish and entitled one?

I mean, yes, it is crazy high for a babysitter, but she will lose money of she asks for less. I had similar issues as a freelancer. People don't understand that we calculate our time constantly. Everythgin we do costs us money because we are not working. That is ok, that's how it works, but we are certainly very reluctant to do things we don't enjoy.

Not at all. It comes to about $11.50/hour +/- per child per hour. If it was just one kid, yeah $35/hour certainly would be outrageous. But I’ll tell you, if it was me, I’d tell them they’re getting off cheap at the $2520.00 combat pay they’d have to pay me to look after their THREE kids for SEVENTY-TWO hours straight—-since I wouldn’t put it past them to not come home at all for three days—-all by myself, with no breaks.

Communication is key and not every babysitter can immediately pick up what you want them to do for their child. Guessing games usually don’t lead anywhere, so the first days should be spent together introducing your lifestyle, family habits, things the kid likes or doesn’t, as well as showing them around the house. Making sure you’re clear about routines and expectations will make their job easier and your mind clear.

But experts say communication should not stop at the introduction week. Maintaining a good, healthy bond with your babysitter is key, even if that means remodeling some things that don’t work. For example, if a late return is going to put your babysitter in a difficult position with public transport, then it’s worth thinking how you can help—whether by paying for a taxi, or offering to drive them home.

Not only is she not paying properly, she doesn't even have the decency to ask 'are you available to babysit tomorrow?'. So many adults need a lesson in manners.

I'm confused!! Did she or did she not ask this person to come cat sit in the initial text??? Then to say her cat doesn't need watched as she is quite used to some routine but turns it around that she was offering a play date for her cat and the sitters cat!!!

Playing the “I’m in the military” card seems to be very common in the US. Why do you worship the armed services so much (& why do some clearly have no problem taking advantage of the same?). Strange.

Less than two bucks an hour. I'd do it for free for a close friend or relative in a bind, and have, but for a paid gig this is a joke. Look into subsidized daycare.

The only way this could work is if a group of mums got together and all chipped in for one of them to look after everyones kids. I can see taking care of your own kid +3 more for $90 per day, but one-on-one, that's not happening.

$13/hr doesn't seem awful for that in some regions. 'Especially if the sitter was allowed to bring their own kid, too. The degree requirement is classist though for sure.

In the U.S., workers are struggling for a livable wage. Note, that's different than a family wage. (Google it.) We used to have ample jobs that could support a family. No longer. We let wages stagnate. $12/hr may be what the parents are getting paid, but it's ridiculous to value a sitter's time significantly less than that.
