While it might sound counterintuitive, the real issue often isn’t perceiving the truth, it’s admitting that it’s true in the first place. “The truth hurts,” “the uncomfortable truth” and other phrases are almost cliche at this point, but this doesn’t make them less correct.

Someone asked, “What’s something that’s painfully obvious but people will never admit?” and people shared their best uncomfortable truth bombs. From the fact that life isn’t fair, to interesting psychological realities, get comfortable, perhaps take some notes as you scroll through, upvote your favorites, and be sure to share your own ideas in the comments section below.

30 Facts That Are True But Some People Refuse To Accept Them Just because you're offended doesn't mean you're right.

KaJuNator , Keira Burton / pexels (not the actual photo) Report

It’s not exactly clear who coined the phrase “the truth hurts,” but some variant of it has been around for centuries. While it’s so unhelpfully common, the painful truth is that the truth really can hurt. Psychologists believe that the act and feeling of our preconceived notions being shattered is, ultimately, painful

It can be hard to admit you are wrong and that, presumably, you wasted a lot of time sticking to incorrect information. Sometimes this can mean overturning an entire worldview which is often such a challenge. Unfortunately, just the idea of reworking everything you know might be too much for some, leading them to simply live in denial. Not just a river in Egypt, as the saying goes.

This particularly works if you are overweight or disabled. It sucks, and it's unfair, but it's true. You will face less discrimination if you are dressed and groomed beautifully. Not just adequately; beautifully. I've been fat, I'm currently a wheelchair user, and it is noticable.

I'm American and I don't know anyone who refuses to accept this - most people are frustrated with the de facto 2-party system. But the politicians and special interests who buy the politicians and who have the political power are not interested in relinquishing power, and won't implement changes which enable more parties to rise to power. Ranked Choice Voting is the easiest way to do it, which I support 100%.

And people doing these jobs need and deserve benefits, a living wage that does not depend on tips, and to be treated with courtesy and respect by their customers, and their managers. They also deserve for their jobs to be preformed in an environment that is safe, and as comfortable as possible. Your cashier does not need to stand for an eighthour shift.

A part of it is the increasing laziness of people to not want to have to do the work to punish or hold these people accountable. If you think about politicians... people complain about it constantly, but there aren't enough people doing anything about it. We aren't making laws that punish our media outlets for telling outright lies. No one is standing up for legislation for campaign reform to punish candidates when they are caught lying to the republic. So they get away with their lies.

I’m not sure this is true. People frequently misidentify what the root issues of their deepest problems are and, subsequently, fail to find real solutions. We have lots of defense mechanisms that prevent us from seeing ourselves as we really are (protecting our ego).

When people say we're better than this, we're really not.

We killed the buffalo to kill the native Americans. We gave them smallpox infected blankets.

We imprisoned our own citizens for having parents born in Japan, but not Italians or Germans.

We freed the slaves only to reenslave with Jim Crow laws.

We've done evil and have to wage war against our worst instincts or we'll do it again.

All countries have done terrible things, not just the USA. The point is, some countries progressed enough to look back and learn from their past, others just don't want to admit they too have a terrible past. Even worse, some still have awful things but don't care. Slavery is the best example of this unevenly progress of the world.

Hard disagree. I can absolutely be incredibly homely, but through good hygiene, learning hair and makeup skills, and dressing nice, I usually look pretty attractive to many people. Men can absolutely change their “attractiveness” by finding a good haircut, taking good care of his skin and teeth, learning how to groom himself and facial hair that most flatters him, and learning to dress well.
