As cute as this picture is, and it is absolutely adorable, parents please remember to not just get a dog on a whim. I am not saying that's what this family did. But make sure it's something you were planning to do before giving it as a gift to your child, don't just get one for the cute face and not actually be prepared for the animal

I get so worried when a family gets a dog as a "gift " for a small child. As a rescuer and a shelter volunteer I've seen so many dogs being dumped after 6 months/1 year, when they get big and the child gets bored, or the dog unintentionally scratched the child (ah, the tragedy! A scratch!). Pets are not toys for children to play with as they please and be disposed of when no longer funny or "too demanding".

I do agree that living things should not be given to children as "gifts". The entire family needs to be prepared to take care of that dog/cat/etc. for as long as it lives, which might be as long as 18 years. Animals are not "toys" or "gifts". They are family members. Once you have one, you MUST care for it just as if it was family. Which also means that you don't make it live outside!! There should be NO SUCH THING as an OUTSIDE DOG!!! Today's dogs are not meant to live outside. They are not prepared for that, only wolves and coyotes are able to survive living outside. So, THINK about it carefully before getting a pet. They live for a long time, and you have to make sure they have a wonderful life. YOU MUST BE RESPONSIBLE!!! On another note, that little girls face is so sweet and adorable. She looks like she's about to cry happy tears. I hope her and her dog have many wonderful years together.

Couldn't agree more. We have five cats that have never touched grass because we live in a very busy area do not want them outside exposed to disease, cars and preditors. They are spoiled rotten and love their fresh air at the windows but outside is off limits. Our previous cats lived to 18, 16 and 9 and we would never have thought of giving them up for any reason.

When you have a much older child, who you know will be a responsible pet owner then I think it's okay to give them a pet as "gift". But remember, the entire family must be prepared to help take care of him for his whole life. The boy looks so in the moment. Everything else around him doesn't matter, just him and his dog. Bless his soul. Beautiful moment!! Damn, now I'm going to cry.

When I was a child we did this & this is exactly what our dog did & the reason I chose her. I was about 6 or 7 at the time. She was such a sweet dog. A Fox Terrier named Mitzi.

2/2 There are 4 major animals that don't usually get adopted. They are: the senior animals., the special needs animals, large dogs like Pitbulls, Rotties, Doberman's, etc., and for some reason black dogs are usually passed by. And I have no idea why. I have a little black dog, who I love so very much!! Her name is Baby. And I love the color black. I've had her for 4 years, the vet said she was around 5 or 6 years old when I got her. It's been 3 years since then, so she's probably about 9-10 years old now. She is a rescue dog, and I love her very much. I even let her sleep with me. Next time I rescue another dog, (depending on the what my personal and financial situation is at the time), I have decided to adopt a senior, black, large dog. I will get the one that has been there the longest, the one that always gets passed by. The one who really needs me. If I was rich, I would buy a REALLY BIG Ranch, and adopt all of them. Remember "Don't shop, ADOPT!!!".

The guy looks a tiny bit rough. (But, you should never judge a book by it's cover.) And, you can tell by his choice of dog that he's just a big ole softie. May they have many years of love, adventure, and joy together!!!!Thank you for adopting and not shopping. There are so many animals in shelters that need a loving forever family. And they have all sorts of animals to choose from for you to adopt. They even have pure bred animals. BUT REMEMBER, ALL homeless and shelter animals need forever homes. A lot of people adopt puppies, which is understandable. But older dogs need love too, especially senior dogs. They just want to live out the rest of their time in a loving, caring, forever home . And they are the most loving, grateful, happiest dogs you'll ever see. WARNING: There are Kill Shelters that only give the animals a short amount of time to live. And if they are not adopted by someone or saved by one of the animal sanctuaries soon, they are usually put to sleep. 1/2.....

When we adopted are three cats they had been in a couple foster homes, so they seemed like they didn't feel at home. When we took them to the vet the first time they were so freaked out about being in the car. But when we brought them back to our house they lit up and you could see it was now home for them

I never wait. No dog can replace the dog you lost, but nothing can help ease the pain like a new little life in the house. I've heard people say they don't get another dog for a long time out of respect to the old dog. Nothing could be further from the truth. What better a tribute to the love you lost than to show that what he or she gave you was so essential to your life that you need it...and soon. Getting a new little one won't erase the pain of your loss, but it's hard to sink into the depths of depression when you have a little lover needing your attention and giving you the love you so desperately need.

We lost our old girl a few years ago; I was so heartbroken. I said 'never again'....I can't take that pain and loss again. But then a friend of mine passed away and her friend that was taking care of the final details needed to re home her dog. I feel so blessed to be able to honor my friend's memory and her dog is such a great add to our little family. He makes me laugh every day. He is 12 so I know we'll be saying goodbye before we want to, but he's such a happy guy he is teaching me to take the good from the situation and enjoy every day as it comes <3

I'll be devastated when my dog's time has come, but I will try to carry on and hopefully will be able to give a loving home to another dog or two even. I think my dog knows I could do with the company and wouldn't begrudge me giving another dog some love and care. he's not selfish like that :)

One of my dogs had a heart defect and died at only 5 months- but i would have euthanized anyone who would have suggested something like that- if he is not in a pain that can't be helped, why should you not love him for as long as he lets you?

And worth every penny. Mine had a heart murmur. He was 2 when I got him, and had lived in a home where he was kept locked in the bathroom for 12-16 hours per day then beat for peeing on the floor. I was told by my vet that his murmur was so bad he'd be lucky to see 3 years old. He lived to be 13.

Reminds me of a dear little pupper we rescued.... He was so cute and affectionate, that the person who ran the shelter, adopted him instantly! But he ran away from the shelter when all the dogs were taken on a field trip.... they looked everywhere for the fellow... put up posters.... but there was no sign of him.... The only consolation is that, he was much much older when he decided to run off... so at the very least, he had loving care in his growing up days... I miss him to this day.... i hope he's happy and that god's watching over him.... :(

into a black hole. It felt like being in an endless tunnel, but at least we where together. Doggie started barking at me, barking... barking... and barking. Slowly the barks became words and we could understand each other. We both loved the weightless fall but did not know where the journey would end. Suddenly doggie started pulling me to the left into a very bright side path. A purple door was located there. Doggie started scratching the door and told me we should go in together. I followed doggie, because there was trust. I don't know why, it was just there. We held paw and hands and opened the door. A beautiful full green meadow with chocolate flowers lay before us and at the end there was a beautiful beach made out of dog cookie crumbs. I had some flowers and doggie some sand. Chocolate is bad for dogs you know and the dogbiscuits are not my cup of tea. The meal made us sleepy so we snuggled together and fell into a deep, deep sleep. The vets advised us to have them washed out surgically and when they got in there he had a congenitally malformed bladder and the stone would have kept forming in these malformations and he would have died from continuing infections. The surgeons made the difficult decision to let him go. We were all devastated. The brightest stars sometimes burn out the fastest.

Man, I am so jealous. When I first brought my first dog home he HATED me. He was so distant and aloof and I literally cried for a week because he wanted nothing to do with me. He wouldn't sleep in my bed. He wouldn't be in the same room as me. HATED me. He is still, eight years later, an old man grump BUT he is my grump. 30042_8664...68874f.jpg
