With the pandemic having put our lives on unprecedented hold, many are dreaming of returning to norm… Who are we lying to? The sole, okay, one of the little things, we truly miss badly is traveling. And I can bet that at any given opportunity, you’d be up and rolling with a fedora to any place in the world just to sip on a pina colada and forget the comfort-turned-hell of your four home walls.

And it’s no secret that many thirsty travelers have must-see travel bucket lists somewhere in the drawer waiting for the borders to open up. For some, it’s Times Square and Hollywood, for others, it’s all about dinner with a view at the Eiffel Tower, but as you’re about to plan your next big post-pandemic trip, you may as well take some good advice from people who have been to those places, but would likely travel back in time to not go there.

So below, ladies and gents, are the most overrated travel destinations shared in one r/AskReddit thread to help us reflect on our sightseeing must-dos before its too late.

People Share What Travel Destinations Are Absolutely Overrated (30 Pics) The Mona Lisa in Louvre in Paris. It's just a small painting hanging quite far away in a really crowded room full of tourists. Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful, iconic painting, but it's not worth visiting the Louvre only for the Mona Lisa. The majority of the other artworks in that museum are more impressive than the Mona Lisa.

I was most fascinated by the Louvre itself. It was a royal palace, and the opulent details of the building itself are just as interesting as everything inside it.

There's SO much more to see at the Louvre, yes of course I wanted to see the Mona Lisa but I was equally in awe to see the Venus de Milo, or sitting in one of the sofas and look at the gorgeous ceiling paintings

There are a lot more to the Louvre than the Mona Lisa. I recommend buying a museum pass if you go to Paris and NOT trying to see the whole thing in one day. Take two or three trips instead. You'll enjoy it more. ...///... Cameras will be banned there in the future. Morons shoving cameras in your face have destroyed a lot of museum experiences for people. If you want a picture of something, BUY IT.

Absolutely. I was a bit dissapointed by the crowds. I like to see the whole painting, but also look at the details, brush marks, etc. There are many other great pieces of work ignored, because they are not Mona Lisa. Sad.

Before visiting the Louvre, it's interesting to discover some artworks online. You can learn something more about the artist and it's possible to zoom in to see all the details. If you visit the Louvre afterwards, you will appreciate the artwork even more.

I went to see the Mona Lisa and it wasn't crowded at all. I got to see it up at the front of the viewing area and it was a great experience. I also saw everything else in the museum and I can agree there are some other pretty impressive stuff there.

Flash photography degrades the painting, so hopefully people are taking video or not using flash. Also, why do you need it on film? Are you seriously going to go back and look at it? You already saw it, just be in the moment, know that you saw it, and move on. It's just as bad as filming a concert, like are you really going to go back and listen? Doubtful

I saw it in NYC at the Met in 1963. The scene was very much like the photo above, minus the cellphones and that's about as close as I got. I didn't mind and it was cool to see the iconic painting, even from a distance. But there was no travel to get there and that was an important difference.

I found Paris to be an enchanting city. We spent three days (way too brief) in Paris in the spring of 2010. I loved the Eiffel Tower. We only went up mid level because we had read that the view was as good there as it was at the top. It was a clear spring day and did not disappoint. We also had a view of the Eiffel Tower from our hotel room. I was delighted to watch after dark when they would light it up in sparking golden lights at the top of each hour. A new city ordinance in force at the time of our visit meant the streets were clean with NO dog poo in sight.

When you enter a shop, you are greeted with “bonjour” and it’s considered rude if you don’t return the greeting. “Ah revoir” upon leaving is also just good manners. Seeing the, albeit small, Mona Lisa amid a sea of other tourists was an equally rich experience for me. My reaction to it was a surprise even to me. We had just been to

Usual French bad organisation in public buildings (sorry but true) why not organise a slow line like at airports etc?? Because local pickpocket gangs that infest the area pay off the guards maybe? Hundreds of visitors crowded into a small room with bad exits - no place to have a fire drill!

People Share What Travel Destinations Are Absolutely Overrated (30 Pics) The original starbucks store in seattle.

It's a recreation and the actual location is a few doors down. The design and decor doesn't really stand out.

They serve starbucks coffee there.

Large queue to get in and standing room only. Take selfies in front, order, buy some souvenirs and gtfo. The store interior is just a queueing place.

At least its in a decent tourist area and its low effort though.

People Share What Travel Destinations Are Absolutely Overrated (30 Pics) The Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen.

It's just so... meh. And too far away from the city center, especially if it's freezing outside like the time I visited it. Just get a souvenir or a postcard or something.

Copenhagen itself is beautiful though, very highly recommended.

The most common tour doesn’t let you see anything of importance, just a bunch of rooms that nobody knew existed.

The White House seemed small to me. But then we do have Buckingham Palace, The House of Parliament and such

Honolulu, HI. It's just a huge and overpriced tourist trap. Sure it's pretty and obviously it's Hawaii, so great vacation spot, right? Do yourself a favor and go to a different spot like Maui or even Hawaii, Hi. But, Honolulu is kind of overrated imo.

Still love it, but there's WAY too many Australian bogans there now (I'm Australian).

Seychelles. Super expensive trip, overpriced hotels, terrible food and underwater is not nearly as impressive. Also, if you are a woman traveling alone, you will be hassled with sexual advances at every turn by the locals.

The Space Needle.

In Seattle, there are great tourist attractions...Pike Place is totally worth it, Post Alley is quaint, and the pier is fun on a nice day.

However, I don’t think going up into the Space Needle is worth it anymore. I haven’t been up since it’s been remodeled, but that’s because it’s so expensive now.

That's the problem with so many cool things... they have priced themselves out of what local's will pay. It's the same as the C.N. Tower here. If it was half the price we would probably go up more often, but at $35 we leave it for the tourists...

I went and had fun doing bridges and taking pictures. Also, the crafts are handmade and beautiful. We bought a magnet in New Mexico and still have it today.

See that's where you are wrong. Spots like these are places of worship, where you just take in the view and reflect upon your life.

People Share What Travel Destinations Are Absolutely Overrated (30 Pics) Anyone said Niagra Falls yet? Hear me out on this one.

The falls themselves are beautiful, and I guess if you're really into the history of a waterfall and its surroundings you can spent half a day there. But once you've seen it, you've got nothing.

The mermaid show at weeki wachee springs in FL. Their show looks great on their website, but the images you see with silicone tails were used or photo shoots or special occasions. Any normal day the show is very lackluster and I super disappointed.

I'm not sure I've ever considered that the inside of a working office would be something you could just go and visit.

Once you get there you have a great view of her back but there is no room in the front to get a good picture let alone be in the picture.

I cannot relate. I loved the ferry ride and I got great pictures of the front of the statue with myself on them too. If you go there, go up to her head, it is a great experience!

People Share What Travel Destinations Are Absolutely Overrated (30 Pics) Tower of London

Expensive, cheesy, absolutely packed with tourists. I have been twice because the people I was with really wanted to go, and all I remember is kids running and screaming in the “torture chamber” themed room, and the ravens which were the only interesting part.
