With the pandemic having put our lives on unprecedented hold, many are dreaming of returning to norm… Who are we lying to? The sole, okay, one of the little things, we truly miss badly is traveling. And I can bet that at any given opportunity, you’d be up and rolling with a fedora to any place in the world just to sip on a pina colada and forget the comfort-turned-hell of your four home walls.

And it’s no secret that many thirsty travelers have must-see travel bucket lists somewhere in the drawer waiting for the borders to open up. For some, it’s Times Square and Hollywood, for others, it’s all about dinner with a view at the Eiffel Tower, but as you’re about to plan your next big post-pandemic trip, you may as well take some good advice from people who have been to those places, but would likely travel back in time to not go there.

So below, ladies and gents, are the most overrated travel destinations shared in one r/AskReddit thread to help us reflect on our sightseeing must-dos before its too late.

People Share What Travel Destinations Are Absolutely Overrated (30 Pics) The Mona Lisa in Louvre in Paris. It's just a small painting hanging quite far away in a really crowded room full of tourists. Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful, iconic painting, but it's not worth visiting the Louvre only for the Mona Lisa. The majority of the other artworks in that museum are more impressive than the Mona Lisa.

People Share What Travel Destinations Are Absolutely Overrated (30 Pics) Dubai. Unless you're really into spending all day in an air conditioned building, then going to the air conditioned basement to get in an air conditioned car to travel to the air conditioned basement of another air conditioned building in which case, do I have a city for you!

Yes! From a business travel point of view, it was great as everything was easy and you can get anything you might be missing from home, but anything to do for leisure or tourism just feels completely synthetic.

For the way women have been treated here in the past and recently as well (foreign women, though I'm sure that the ones who live there are treated even worse), I don't want to go there. As a woman, if you're assaulted, then you're thrown into jail for it. Extramarital sex is frowned upon, and you CAN be jailed for that just as well (a year!!!). Don't go to Dubai honestly.

I also remember seeing a story of a man who was raped by other men, and when he reported it the police threatened to prosecute him for homosexuality. There was also the case of someone who was convicted of drug possession after customs agents discovered a nearly microscopic trace of marijuana on his shoe (don't ask me how they found it). So it's not just women who have to worry about their messed-up government.

I haven't been to Dubai but my brother has and he said it's like Singapore on steroids in that it's a lot of malls you access underground and flashy expensive stuff. He liked it but said it was very vast and hot. That said I think as long as you can make it sustainable and not damage the environment then flashy places like this have their place in the world. I love Singapore and even though it's a little clinical feeling, I imagine I'd enjoy Dubai. I don't get people that 'hate' certain places. I've enjoyed some countries /places more than others but I have never ever hated anywhere I've travelled. There are good things and bad things about every place.

Never been there but I understand the hate part towards how it has been built. That behind every flashy thing there are so many humans there are treated so bad. As a tourist you literally do not have the right to go to certain parts of the city where actual workers live because they do not want you to see their conditions

I’m sorry you had a bad experience. I hope you come in better weather when we don’t need ACs so much and go see the desert (non-touristy parts). Don’t stay in more flashy parts like all others and you might begin to see the real character of this small but large-hearted emirate. Xx

I have friends and family there. The beaches are lovely. The food is delicious. The smells from all the foliage, spices, and perfumes embrace me. The calls to prayer, especially at 0500 every morning, hearken back to an ancient time and in the stillness of the morning, as the various birds are warming up their voices, the chants are mystical. Camping in the desert is a blast. Snorkeling in Dibba is wondrous. Spending time with people I love is priceless. Will 100% be going back.

This is true. But... I would recomend getting out of the city and see the other side of Dubai. The souks (markets) are amazing. Vibrant and lively. Altough very touristy the desert tour is cool, particularly the sunset over the dunes is spectacular. Take an abra (water taxi) over the Dubai creek. There is lots to see in Dubai if you leave the air con.

Yep, I hated it until I went on a private tour that was 'off the beaten track' and really got a sense of the history of the place. Particularly how quickly it grew from 'camel herders to sky scrapers'. It's a fascinating place for a westerner.

With everyone hating on UAE I'm an Indian who lived in UAE my whole life. I had the best time. Both my parents had good jobs, we had a home, we went to a good school. Our church was fully funded by the government. Our communities were always invited to their festivities and are always happy to attend ours. We never had a feeling of alienation. We had moments where Americans and Europeans tries to bully us around and the local authorities stood up for us. The authorities are very hospitable. I enjoyed travelling a lot. I can't think of a single weekend we did not go out as a family. There so many places and I don't mean malls. Sanctuaries, mangroves, oases, farms all of which barely cost a dirham to enjoy. Lots of public programs and festivities freely open to the public. We never feared for our life be it in our homes or outside. I was in tears when I left the place :(

Perhaps, a bit unfair, as they failed to mention that the average temperature range from May to about September is between 35 deg. C (7AM) up to 54 deg C. (peak at 2PM). It is very difficult to manage those temperatures even if you grew up there. Not a native of that area, but grew up there. We used to play football all day - so many kids used to pass out and/or have nose bleeds from the heat.

Blue lagoon in Iceland. Always super crowded and you have to book it super early. There are a lot of better lagoons in Iceland that are just as pretty (or even prettier), more isolated, definitely less crowded, and just as "blue".

Seeing as Bondi Beach is the most famous beach in Australia, what do you expect. I wouldn't even bother to go there, especially when we have sooooo many amazing beaches that don't get anywhere as busy.

I did a Mount Fuji tour in Japan in March. It was hands down the worst part of the trip. No point to go up the actual mountain. It was like 12 hours on a bus. Then I saw it from a train like 3 days later, and that was a better view than anything I got on the tour.

I disagree, I climbed Fuji-san (in September) on a longer but less crowded track. We started at 20:00 to catch the sunrise at 05:30. The view was breathtaking and only the last part on top got crowded. I wouldn't do it twice, but wouldn't have missed out on the experience either. People Share What Travel Destinations Are Absolutely Overrated (30 Pics) Toyosu Fish Market. The one that replaced Tsukiji as the fish auction central of Tokyo in 2018. You get to watch the auction process, but only if you go early in the morning. And even then, only through small glass windows two stories above the auction block. If there are more than a couple dozen other visitors, you will not be able to see anything.

People Share What Travel Destinations Are Absolutely Overrated (30 Pics) The original starbucks store in seattle. It's a recreation and the actual location is a few doors down. The design and decor doesn't really stand out. They serve starbucks coffee there. Large queue to get in and standing room only. Take selfies in front, order, buy some souvenirs and gtfo. The store interior is just a queueing place. At least its in a decent tourist area and its low effort though.

People Share What Travel Destinations Are Absolutely Overrated (30 Pics) The Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen. It's just so... meh. And too far away from the city center, especially if it's freezing outside like the time I visited it. Just get a souvenir or a postcard or something. Copenhagen itself is beautiful though, very highly recommended.

Honolulu, HI. It's just a huge and overpriced tourist trap. Sure it's pretty and obviously it's Hawaii, so great vacation spot, right? Do yourself a favor and go to a different spot like Maui or even Hawaii, Hi. But, Honolulu is kind of overrated imo.

Seychelles. Super expensive trip, overpriced hotels, terrible food and underwater is not nearly as impressive. Also, if you are a woman traveling alone, you will be hassled with sexual advances at every turn by the locals.

The Space Needle. In Seattle, there are great tourist attractions...Pike Place is totally worth it, Post Alley is quaint, and the pier is fun on a nice day. However, I don’t think going up into the Space Needle is worth it anymore. I haven’t been up since it’s been remodeled, but that’s because it’s so expensive now.

That's the problem with so many cool things... they have priced themselves out of what local's will pay. It's the same as the C.N. Tower here. If it was half the price we would probably go up more often, but at $35 we leave it for the tourists...

The mermaid show at weeki wachee springs in FL. Their show looks great on their website, but the images you see with silicone tails were used or photo shoots or special occasions. Any normal day the show is very lackluster and I super disappointed.
