With the pandemic having put our lives on unprecedented hold, many are dreaming of returning to norm… Who are we lying to? The sole, okay, one of the little things, we truly miss badly is traveling. And I can bet that at any given opportunity, you’d be up and rolling with a fedora to any place in the world just to sip on a pina colada and forget the comfort-turned-hell of your four home walls.

And it’s no secret that many thirsty travelers have must-see travel bucket lists somewhere in the drawer waiting for the borders to open up. For some, it’s Times Square and Hollywood, for others, it’s all about dinner with a view at the Eiffel Tower, but as you’re about to plan your next big post-pandemic trip, you may as well take some good advice from people who have been to those places, but would likely travel back in time to not go there.

So below, ladies and gents, are the most overrated travel destinations shared in one r/AskReddit thread to help us reflect on our sightseeing must-dos before its too late.

People Share What Travel Destinations Are Absolutely Overrated (30 Pics) The Mona Lisa in Louvre in Paris. It's just a small painting hanging quite far away in a really crowded room full of tourists. Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful, iconic painting, but it's not worth visiting the Louvre only for the Mona Lisa. The majority of the other artworks in that museum are more impressive than the Mona Lisa.

Yes! From a business travel point of view, it was great as everything was easy and you can get anything you might be missing from home, but anything to do for leisure or tourism just feels completely synthetic.

This is true. Pisa is wierd and kinda cool but very much a tourist trap. That said, I had one of my best Italian meals in a tiny restaurant in Pisa. I asked my taxi driver where he takes his wife for thier anniversary. It was reasonably priced, really nice atmosphere and amazingly good food.

It depends what you're after. Thrill rides and roller coasters? Six Flags. Theming, landscaping, the whole experience? Disney World. Disney's been waaaaaaaaay cleaner than the several Six Flags I've been to (can't speak for all of them, but the ones I went to had a "Six Flags smell" - like a combo of baked sweat, rubber, and asphalt).

Going to Disneyland on a Wednesday in October is A TON of fun. One of the perks of not having children to cater too! You can get off a ride and get right back on it again. We had the entire Nightmare Before Christmas Haunted Mansion to ourselves. I've been to Disney many times and that day was the absolute best.

I've been to Disney in Tokyo, Anaheim and Orlando and I loved it. Each Disney has multiple parks with awesome rides. It's not just Disneyland/World. There's California Adventure, Tokyo Disney Sea, Epcot, etc. Each park is different. The main Disney parks are similar and their rides are more kid friendly but the experience is awesome. Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain, Splash Mountain are all awesome. The 'bad' rides like 'it's a small world' or Peter Pan feel dated but still have their charm. It has an old world Disney feel and if you're into that it's super whimsical. It's not about the thrill rides only. If you use the free fast pass system you don't even wait for rides. I barely waited at all. The only ride I waited for was the Cars ride which was slow to move and couldn't be fast passed. I'm an Amusement park enthusiast and I still adore Disney. By the way the best Disney imo is Japan because they are so into Disney it's great, but I highly enjoyed Anaheim and Orlando

When I lived in SGV, I was able to go to Disneyland (and Magic Mountain, Knotts Berry Farm, etc) in the off season, and on days when hardly anybody’s there (think Christmas Day). Also, my high school had its Grad Night at Disneyland. Sadly, I understand they had to stop that tradition when the kids started getting violent. What a shame. We had a blast.

I visited the Disney in Florida when I was 11 and it was a massive letdown, but then again it's probably just not my thing. Quite liked Epcot, but didn't get to spend much time there. Then a couple of years later I went to EuroDisney (it's now been renamed Disneyland Paris, I think) and had a much better time. Probably because I had such low expectations based on the Florida experience.

Its too much demand for too small a space. They can't expand because of geography - college on one side, highway on another, convention center on another, and six lane streets on all sides. But Disney is still Disney so people are willing to pay waaay too much money to get in not understanding that there is actually less than they think to do and its going to be a long wait for all of it. Even the tricky "I'll buy a fast pass and skip the lines" won't work. If you're already paying $1200 to take your family there for a day, everyone spends the other $80 to get the fast passes so your wait in line is still infinite.

Unless you have a fast pass, waiting to get on the most popular rides takes about 1-3 hours. That means that you can go on around only 7 rides in a day. (At least that's how much it was for me.) Six Flags Magic Mountain is significantly better. The rides are so much more fun and the lines are shorter. I went there on New Year's Day once and there were practically no lines.

and in all the pics, they show just what we see above and fail to show that the hill is about 3 times what you see here and when you're on the observation deck, you're far. (I spend way too much on google earth finding places I see on TV)

People Share What Travel Destinations Are Absolutely Overrated (30 Pics) Bourbon Street, New Orleans. It's really just the same as any other bar district in any other large city around the world. Same old cover bands playing the same old songs that you'd hear anywhere. You can experience all you need just by walking down the street for an hour and not going in anywhere.

To me the purpose of Bourbon Street, just like the Red Lights District in Amsterdam, is to host all the loud bachelor/birthday destination parties, letting the others chill in any other bar in the city.

Blue lagoon in Iceland. Always super crowded and you have to book it super early. There are a lot of better lagoons in Iceland that are just as pretty (or even prettier), more isolated, definitely less crowded, and just as "blue".

Seeing as Bondi Beach is the most famous beach in Australia, what do you expect. I wouldn't even bother to go there, especially when we have sooooo many amazing beaches that don't get anywhere as busy.

I did a Mount Fuji tour in Japan in March. It was hands down the worst part of the trip. No point to go up the actual mountain. It was like 12 hours on a bus. Then I saw it from a train like 3 days later, and that was a better view than anything I got on the tour.

I disagree, I climbed Fuji-san (in September) on a longer but less crowded track. We started at 20:00 to catch the sunrise at 05:30. The view was breathtaking and only the last part on top got crowded. I wouldn't do it twice, but wouldn't have missed out on the experience either. People Share What Travel Destinations Are Absolutely Overrated (30 Pics) Toyosu Fish Market. The one that replaced Tsukiji as the fish auction central of Tokyo in 2018. You get to watch the auction process, but only if you go early in the morning. And even then, only through small glass windows two stories above the auction block. If there are more than a couple dozen other visitors, you will not be able to see anything.

People Share What Travel Destinations Are Absolutely Overrated (30 Pics) The original starbucks store in seattle.

It's a recreation and the actual location is a few doors down. The design and decor doesn't really stand out.

They serve starbucks coffee there.

Large queue to get in and standing room only. Take selfies in front, order, buy some souvenirs and gtfo. The store interior is just a queueing place.

At least its in a decent tourist area and its low effort though.

People Share What Travel Destinations Are Absolutely Overrated (30 Pics) The Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen.

It's just so... meh. And too far away from the city center, especially if it's freezing outside like the time I visited it. Just get a souvenir or a postcard or something.

Copenhagen itself is beautiful though, very highly recommended.

Honolulu, HI. It's just a huge and overpriced tourist trap. Sure it's pretty and obviously it's Hawaii, so great vacation spot, right? Do yourself a favor and go to a different spot like Maui or even Hawaii, Hi. But, Honolulu is kind of overrated imo.

Seychelles. Super expensive trip, overpriced hotels, terrible food and underwater is not nearly as impressive. Also, if you are a woman traveling alone, you will be hassled with sexual advances at every turn by the locals.

The Space Needle.

In Seattle, there are great tourist attractions...Pike Place is totally worth it, Post Alley is quaint, and the pier is fun on a nice day.

However, I don’t think going up into the Space Needle is worth it anymore. I haven’t been up since it’s been remodeled, but that’s because it’s so expensive now.

That's the problem with so many cool things... they have priced themselves out of what local's will pay. It's the same as the C.N. Tower here. If it was half the price we would probably go up more often, but at $35 we leave it for the tourists...

The mermaid show at weeki wachee springs in FL. Their show looks great on their website, but the images you see with silicone tails were used or photo shoots or special occasions. Any normal day the show is very lackluster and I super disappointed.

Expensive, cheesy, absolutely packed with tourists. I have been twice because the people I was with really wanted to go, and all I remember is kids running and screaming in the “torture chamber” themed room, and the ravens which were the only interesting part.
