18 Biggest And Most Awkward Moments From The 2024 Oscars That Everyone’s Been Talking About
The 96th Academy Awards, held on Sunday night (March 10) at Hollywood’s Dolby Theater, were not short of entertaining moments. From a famous celebrity covering his privates with an envelope to an electric performance of Barbie’s “I’m Just Ken” —and the ever-present red carpet accident—the ceremony left viewers with multiple talking points.
In what has now become a tradition, social media has commented on each of these instances, joining people in a massive watch party.
Below, Bored Panda presents a list of the 18 most memorable moments of the ceremony that honors the cinematic achievements of the year.

Messi The Dog Steals The Show
The adorable border collie, who stars in Anatomy Of A Fall, got his own seat at the awards. He was even seen raising his paws during the ceremony, and host Jimmy Kimmel directed a joke at him.
“Even though he’s a dog, he may have given the performance of a year in Anatomy Of A Fall,” Jimmy said in his opening monologue.
Dressed in a bowtie, some say Messi deserves a spot in the best-dressed list of the show.
Ryan Gosling Makes The Audience Sing Along To “I’m Just Ken” With A Surprise Performance By Slash
One of the most memorable moments of the evening occurred when Ryan Gosling took to the stage in a pink bedazzled suit to perform his Barbie song, I’m Just Ken.
The hit, nominated for Best Original Song, got audience members to sing and dance along—with lyrics of the rock tune appearing on the Dolby Theater’s screen like a karaoke bar.
If things couldn’t be better, the fierce guitar solo in the song was rendered by none other than Guns N' Roses lead guitarist Slash.
Arnold Schwarzenegger And Danny Devito’s Reunion
Both stars of the comedy films Twins and Junior reunited to present Oscars in two award categories, visual effects and film editing.
"Arnold and I are presenting together tonight for very obvious reasons," Danny said before the Terminator star finished: "We both tried to kill Batman."
Both actors have played Batman villains in their time. While Danny was The Penguin in Batman Returns in 1992, Arnold was Mr. Freeze in Batman & Robin in 1997.
Then, the camera panned to former Batman Michael Keaton, who signaled to the pair to bring it on as Arnold called him a "son of a b*tch."
"You have a lot of nerve to show your face around here," he added.
The Godzilla Team Brought Toys On Stage To Accept Their Award
Winning an Oscar is a moment movie fans have dreamed of since their youth. After taking to the stage to accept the award for Best Visual Effects, the cast of the Takashi Yamazaki film knew the perfect way to make that dream extra special by adding a nod to their inner child.
The cast proudly held up the gilded statuettes… and some Godzilla toys.
They won and totally deserve it with such a small budget for big movie this is insane
Jimmy Kimmel Reads Donald Trump’s Post About Him Aloud
Opening monologues are hit or miss, and they can set the tone for how the rest of the award show will unfold.
As Jimmy Kimmel took to the Dolby Theater stage for the 96th Oscars, he didn’t receive the most heartwarming of greetings.
While many audience members stood up to applaud him, others, including Emma Stone, Emily Blunt, and Lily Gladstone, were seen clapping from their seats.
Also, before Al Pacino presented the Best Picture award in a very anticlimactic fashion, Jimmy went on stage and read a message Donald Trump had written about him on Truth Social, his social media app that resembles X (formerly known as Twitter).
“Has there ever been a worse host than Jimmy Kimmel at the Oscars?” Jimmy read to the audience.
“Get rid of Kimmel and perhaps replace him with another washed up, but cheap, ABC ‘talent,’ George Slopanopoulos,” seemingly a reference to the This Week host, George Stephanopoulos.
Jimmy then clapped back, directing the attention towards Trump’s legal woes, “Isn’t it past your jail time?”
I watched the Oscars live last night. When Kimmel read the tweet, I thought that it was a joke, something Kimmel's writers made up. This morning, I find out it was a real, actual tweet from Trump. Amazing.
Billie Eilish’s Spectacular Performance Of “What Was I Made For?”
Billie delighted the audience with a performance of “What Was I Made For?” from Barbie.
The powerful ballad, which she wrote alongside her brother Finneas, was recognized with the award of Best Original Song.
The singer wore an outfit that paid homage to the Mattel doll creator, Ruth Handler.
The song made me weep when I first heard it in the "Barbie" credits and brought a tear again last night. 22 years old and she's snagged two Oscars (this and the Bond theme, "No Time to Die"), good on her.
Well those are your opinions and they don't count as facts.
Load More Replies...Emma Stone Wasn’t A Fan Of Jimmy Kimmel’s Joke About Her Sex Scenes
After showing a montage of the Best Picture nominees, which included brief scenes of Emma in Poor Things, Jimmy joked, “Those were all the parts of Poor Things that we’re allowed to show on TV.”
The comment was evidently referencing the sci-fi film's many explicit sex scenes.
The film’s lead, who has defended the scenes before, was seen shaking her head and seemingly mouthing, "What a prick."
Da'Vine Joy Randolph’s Heartfelt Acceptance Speech
The singer-turned-actress, who received the Best Supporting Actress award for her performance in The Holdovers, recalled the moment her mom casually suggested she change career paths.
"I didn’t think I was supposed to be doing this as a career. I started off as a singer, but my mother said, 'Go across that street to the theater department. There’s something for you there,’” a tearful Da'Vine said.
But, toward the end of her heartfelt speech, she abruptly changed her tone to thank her publicist, saying, "You don't have a publicist like I have a publicist."
Emily Blunt And Ryan Gosling’s Barbenheimer Smackdown
Emily and Ryan, who starred in Oppenheimer and Barbie, respectively, addressed the cinematic feud of the summer in a hilarious segment.
The duo staged a catfight where they argued why their movie was superior to their competitor’s.
While Emily pointed out that Oppenheimer had received more nominations than Barbie (13 vs. 9), Ryan comically fired back, saying the "Barbenheimer" phenomenon wasn't called "Oppenbarbie" for a reason: "You've been riding Barbie's coattails all summer."
"Thanks for Ken-splaining that to me, Mr. 'I need to paint my abs on to get nominated.' You don't see Robert Downey doing that!" Emily responded, defending her Oppenheimer co-star.
The Godzilla Cast’s Themed Shoes
Oh, and the team of Godzilla Minus One (the 37th film in the Godzilla franchise) showed up to the event in themed Godzilla shoes.
The Japanese epic film took home the award for Best Visual Effects.
Jimmy Kimmel’s Awkward Reference To Robert Downey Jr.’s Troubled Past
While the host of the evening, who took to the stage for the fourth consecutive year, had a smooth time presenting the awards, a joke he made about Robert Downey Jr.’s past problems with substance abuse created a tense moment in the room.
“This is the highest point of Robert Downey Jr.’s long and illustrious career. Well, one of the highest points,” Jimmy said as Robert pointed to his nose.
“Was it too on the nose, or was that a drug motion you made?”
The actor could be seen miming, "Let's move on."
Robert took home the award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Oppenheimer. Once on stage, he thanked "my terrible childhood and the Academy, in that order."
Many Oscar Firsts
22 years after he was first nominated, British filmmaker Cristopher Nolan was finally able to lift up the Academy Award statuette for Best Director for his work in Oppenheimer.
In 2002, he received a nomination for Best Original Screenplay for Memento. In 2011, he received a nomination in the same category for Inception.
In 2018, he was nominated for Best Director for Dunkirk.
The film also makes Cillian Murphy the first Irish actor to be named Best Actor.
Additionally, it’s the first win for his co-star Robert Downey Jr., who was first nominated in 1993 for Chaplin.
The Zone of Interest also became the first UK production to win the Oscar for Best International Feature. The 96th edition of the ceremony also marked the first Oscar for Ukraine when 20 Days In Mariupol was named Best Documentary Feature.
Emma Stone Accepts The Award For Best Actress—In A Ripped Louis Vuitton Gown
When Emma rose to her feet after hearing her name for the Best Actress category, she was seen suddenly grabbing her back.
“My dress!” she said. “It’s broken. I think it happened during [Ryan Gosling’s performance of] ‘I’m Just Ken.’”
“Don’t look at it,” she later added, addressing her wardrobe malfunction as she walked off the stage.
The actress received her award for her performance as Bella Baxter in Poor Things.
The special recognition, an emotional Emma said, “is about a team that came together to become greater than the sum of its parts, which is the best part of making movies.”
Emma beat out her friend Lily Gladstone who played Mollie Kyle, an Osage woman who survived the Osage Indian murders, in Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon.
Kirsten Dunst Trips Into A Golden Statue On The Red Carpet
The actress, who attended the ceremony with husband Jesse Plemons, bumped into an Oscars statue while looking at the photographers on the red carpet.
Kirsten, dressed in an elegant white gown, laughed off the blooper and grinned with her spouse as they continued to pose for the camera.
Al Pacino’s Weird “Best Picture” Announcement
After sitting through a three-hour ceremony, viewers wanted to know which film would receive the biggest prize of the evening: the Best Picture award.
Still, some were left disappointed by Al Pacino’s underwhelming delivery of the important news.
“My eyes see Oppenheimer” were the words used by the 83-year-old actor after he opened up the golden envelope with the winner’s name.
The Scarface star also didn’t list the other nominated films, neglecting an award show tradition.
Dominic Sessa Does The Heisman
Instead of striking a serious pose, Dominic surprised everyone by jumping and crossing his arms in front of a photographer on the red carpet.
Dominic made his film debut as the troubled teenager Angus Tully in the coming-of-age film The Holdovers, nominated for Best Picture.
John Cena Goes (Almost) Naked On Stage
What better way to present the award for Best Costume Design than with a demonstration of the importance of clothing?
Half a century ago, the Oscars were famously interrupted when actor David Niven was upstaged by a streaker.
Host Jimmy Kimmel reminded viewers of that moment as he called on the wrestler-turned-actor to follow in the streaker’s footsteps.
"I changed my mind," a nude John protested, his privates covered by the envelope containing the Best Costume Design winner. "The male body is not a joke."
Vannesa Hudgens Shows Off Her Pregnant Belly
While the ceremony itself is nothing short of entertaining, many fashionistas tune in to watch the red carpet pre-show, where A-listers show off their most head-turning designs.
This year, actress Vanessa Hudgens wowed viewers with a gorgeous Vera Wang head-to-toe gown that revealed a part of her life she had hidden from fans: her pregnant belly.
“I clearly have a lot to be excited for,” the co-host of ABC's Oscars pre-show telecast said.
Vanessa is expecting her first child with baseball player Cole Tucker, whom she married last December.
Johnathan Glazer Stated While Accepting His Award For Best International Feature "Right Now, We Stand Here As Men Who Refute Their Jewishness And The Holocaust Being Hijacked By An Occupation Which Has LED To Conflict For So Many Innocent People."
how is the Documentary Feature win "20 Days In Mariupol" not on this list? that documentary was incredibly painful to watch (at about 17 minutes in I had to pause because I was crying my eyes out) and it was so deserved that they won. the director's acceptance speech was one of the most powerful of the night. more people need to watch this documentary and understand that this is not fiction, this is real life and it's still going on every day. if you stand with Palestine and want to free the innocent people there, you have to stand with Ukraine too and do the same for them.
