America is a place full of quirks that can feel completely foreign to outsiders. From the suspiciously big serving sizes to tipping for a cup of coffee to even just how people go about their lives, the experience of being in America can be a real shocker for visitors and new immigrants.

And while some things don’t fully make sense until you’re actually there, these posts give you a fun glimpse into the quirks of American life. They might not prepare you for everything, but they’ll definitely show you a unique side of the States.

Compared to countries like Italy, where people sip on small, strong espressos, or Japan, where green tea is the norm, US drinks are super sweet and come in sizes that could last all day.

On top of this, they have truly become successful at being able to do things quickly, especially when it comes to food. There are many fast food places in the States that come with drive-thru features. But that’s not simply it.

There are even drive-thru pharmacies, banks, and coffee shops. In other countries like Spain, people usually enjoy sit-down meals with friends and family. To these people, the concept of taking a cup of coffee through the window is quite alien.

While tipping is a common practice in many countries, it is practically a requirement in the States. And no, you can't skimp on tips—15-20% is the expected norm at restaurants.

On the contrary, in countries like Japan, there is an actual cultural principle not to tip anyone, and a good number of European nations include the gratuity within the bill itself.

Medical bills in the US can be shockingly high compared to countries with universal healthcare, like Canada or the UK. In those places, most people do not have to pay for doctor’s visits, surgeries and staying in the hospital, because this is financed by the state. Here, on the other hand, a simple visit to an emergency department could lead to a bill that runs into hundreds of thousands of dollars.

When it comes to holidays, Americans don’t get much vacation time. With an average of just two weeks of paid vacation, they might feel rushed to squeeze in their trips. Unfortunately that's not quite right. *By law* employees in Germany are entitled to at least 24 days of paid leave per year, assuming they're working six days per week. If working less days per week, this number is adjusted accordingly, resulting in a minimum of 20 days of paid leave for the common arrangement of working five days per week. However, a lot of employers contractually grant their employees more days of paid leave than legally required.

Having a real hard time continuing to find a reason to stay in America. I was born here, but most everywhere else in the civilized, industrialized world, seems to treat their citizens better. I am constantly concerned that if I get sick or if someone in my family does, we could go bankrupt. What would I miss if I live abroad? My sports teams? That is about it I think.

This is only part of the story. In the UK we have statutory maternity leave, where they must keep your job open for you to return to, of 26 weeks, and additional leave of a futher 26 weeks. We also have Statutory Maternity Pay of 90% of wages for 6 weeks (30 days) plus a further 33 weeks at a lower rate. And a lovely little caveat at the end for employers - they must pay SMP even if the stop trading!

I find it very strange you think we must like this situation. So many people here work themselves to death, hate the system and would love to change it. But you call us proud losers? It certainly seems like Americans aren't the only ones with problems.

My country sucks, but there's at least 20 paid leave days. You start with 20 or 21, and the older you are, the more you get. Right before retirement you can have more than 30. Doesn't matter how many years you worked, it depends on your age and you can get some more days if you have children (our flag is not in this picture)

Don't include Canada in this list. The 10 days are for federal employees. Individual provinces set their own. In Alberta you get 5 unpaid sick/personal days which require approval. In Quebec you get a minimum of two paid sick days. Employees are nothing to the provincial governments that switch between progressive and conservative. Everything nice we get is eventually killed when the Trumpers take over

Hungary: 20 days + 1 day after every 3 years over the age of 25, max. 30 days. Add 2 days after 1 child, 4 days after 2 and 7 days if you have 3 or more children. Add 5 days if you're a full-time worker but younger than 18. Add 5 days if you work under the surface (eg. mining) or at least 3 hours/day with x-ray. Plus maternity leave, paternity leave, caring family member with disability etc.

Inaccurate for UK. It's 28 days a year. The minimum holiday entitlement that an employer must provide to a full-time worker is 28 days a year (or 5.6 weeks). That can include bank holidays but everywhere I've worked, it didn't. So I got bank holidays on top.

They forgot Romania: 21 paid days that just got increased to 23 and after 2 years with the same employer, it goes up to 25! You can also get 60 days of medical leave per year, from your personal physician, without anyone questioning it. Anything over 60 days, they should check it, but nobody does!

Actually those figures are grossly underplayed, as noone only offers the legal minimum in those countries. While, e.g., Germany requires 20 days if you have a five-day-workweek, the norm is between 25 and 30.

Not to one-up..but went to an urgent care that I had visited before for a Upper Resp infection. Got a bill for the whole amount, when my BC/BS should have paid 80%. Upon investigation it was reclassified by the conglomerate as a Ready Care, or, an offsite ER. Oh...the hospital ER is 4 blocks away. I refused to pay any more than my 20% co-pay due to their "subterfuge". They threatened credit reporting after a few months. Called my (GOP) Rep. and explained the situation. I sent them 20% right after my call to my Rep. Got an e-mail from McClaren telling me it was paid in full.

They were both the same price so it only made sense. Didn't realize until I got home. Thought it was fine cause I had to get tums, to find the same thing… And find another associate. Finding someone took about 5 minutes. The funny thing is they just hand it over right after and let you take it to the front.
