American Health Insurance is beyond stupid. If it was a person, it would be unable to wipe it's own butt. That's how stupid American health insurance is.

After my brother died, a life insurance company send me a letter which began "We note from Social Security records that your brother died recently." In the instructions for claiming the policy, they required a death certificate. Dudes, didn't you already just tell me you knew he was dead?

I got one of those! My insurance sent me a letter saying they need proof of my address. To determine if I'm within the coverage area

That wording makes sense, though. Account providers etc may ask for utility bills or similar to prove an address, to avoid people supplying fake addresses for fraud.

I have insurance through the state, and every year I go through this. I haven't moved in six years, and they send me tons of junk mail. Stuff like, "Did you know, your child can get a flu shot?" But, whenever it's time to reapply, they say they can't find me, and tell me they sent it to some address I have never heard of. This year, I brought in all the mail they'd sent in the last two months, to prove they knew my address.

All address's are suspect, we are after-all on a rotating planet in a spinning solar system within a swirling galaxy adrift in space contained in a further who knows what.

Here in the UK, I often read of US folks trying to do something about the high rate of gun violence. Unfortunately, they are always up against powerful opposition. Maybe someone in the US ought to start talking about "the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." when arguing for measures to reduce deaths by gunshot - make it into a return to the original values of the USA and all that. After all, getting shot dead does rather deny a person to the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. A patient named Michael Louis, blamed an Orthopedic doctor that had just performed a back surgery on him, causing him to have severe back pain Post-Op. Louis killed Dr. Preston Phillips, as well a receptionist Amanda Glenn, Doctor Stephanie Husen and patient William Love at the clinic at St. Francis hospital before committing suicide. Yes, there's knife crime in the UK but? Sorry to put it like this but? A knife is up close and personal. A gun is too, apart from high powered rifles et al... At the end of the day? There needs to be far more stricter gun laws but... Knives... Every single kitchen in the world more than likely probably has one... I just don't know or have any answer... Sorry it's... Just to make it ALL about me??? If a gun had been present the night my ex did what he did to me? I highly doubt I'd be alive right now, at least with a knife? Most Floridians oppose the bans but the governor and other elected leaders push them through anyway. Why? Because the far-right minority wants them to. Why do what the minority wants over the objections of the majority? Because that minority votes in much, much higher numbers making them the functional majority. Infuriating that so many moderates and liberals give away their power like that but hopefully things like this will wake them up before it's too late.

Yep, I'm in the UK but my employer also gives private medical insurance. Anytime I've tried to use it I gave to jump through 100' s hoops only for them to get so far and say the rest of the treatment isn't covered. NHS picks up mid treatment and guess what? It's the same consultant as they do both private /NHS. All doctors are NHS trained so private doesn't mean better doctors or care.

A lot of people should be locked up over this - and you know this is far from an isolated case.

I was admitted to the hospital a couple years ago for a stroke, admitted straight from the ER. Insurance initially denied coverage because I didn't get advance permission for the hospital stay. It's not like I was there for funsies. Also, a doctor's office fought my insurance for over a year to get a treatment the insurance denied as "experimental" despite having been fully approved by the FDA for fourteen years. They pulled shady b******t by sending me completely illegible forms to try and fight my case, but the doctor's office used a third-party service that had pristine copies of the forms to send me whenever insurance pulled that garbage.

Not only is that cruel to you and everyone who cares about you but all of that time and effort just adds exponentially to the cost of healthcare in the first place. The whole thing is obscene. I hope you are all doing well.

I have a auto immune disease in my lungs, had to go for early ct scans to make sure it was not progressing. Insurance tried to say it was not medically necessary. My Pulmonologist got on a 3 way call with them & demanded you know their expertise because he specializes in my disease. He said I can't believe you are wasting y time on this when I have sick patients. The insurance person just stammered through the conversation & approved the CT scan. It was fantastic but I also wish it never had to be done. Our insurance now denies my husbands epilesy meds that he has been taking for years because they are expensive & they say try something else. I once had my insurance company refuse to cover a doctor's visit when I broke my arm because it was a "pre-existing condition." Like yes, the condition existed prior to my arriving at the doctor's office, but I figure that's why we go to the doctor's office in general?!?!!?

Apart from their supersized food, Americans have a reputation of being fans of sugared beverages as well. If you are planning on visiting the US, prepare for a lot of flavored sodas and sweet iced teas.

Compared to countries like Italy, where people sip on small, strong espressos, or Japan, where green tea is the norm, US drinks are super sweet and come in sizes that could last all day.

The minimum wage needs to be a livable wage. That it's still $7.25/hr in so many places is beyond obscene. And it's not just about raising it. It's about including a provision in the law that automatically raises it every year or two to keep up with inflation. Otherwise we'll just end up right back in this same place again and again.

Same here in the U.S. [Which isn't to say that some don't still try it.] But our minimum wage in most places is obscenely low. For context, if you calculate what a MW worker takes home after taxes and the rent for an average 1 bedroom, they have to work about 33.5 days just to cover one month's rent. Which is obviously f****d. That's what needs to change. Focusing solely on tipped workers (many of whom make *significantly* more than MW) is a distraction from the real issue.

The minimum wage isn't enough no matter what kind of employment it is! At least these employees have the potential to earn more. Most don't. It needs to be raised and the law needs to provide for it to go up every year to keep up with inflation.

The problem is, restaurants have been allowed and even encouraged to run a certain way for a Very Long Time, they cannot/will not change overnight. BUT those people that don't tip anymore to try to force the business to change are ONLY HARMING THE SERVER, not the business. The business still got your money, because you came and dined there. So if you really want to get the businesses attention, don't go there. BUT (last one) the catch 22 is that boycotting the business only also hurts the servers, because the business will cut staff before paying them more.

As a dual citizen of the US and the EU, I’ve experienced this firsthand. The absurd conspiracy theories and whining about masks and social distancing totally started in the USA, and only a few months later began to influence the rest of the world. While most people could have lived with some temporary restrictions, in the US it became part of the usual polarized and oversimplified political discussion. The hyperindividualistic nature of the US also hindered the understanding of simple concepts, such as that masks are not meant to protect you directly, but to protect those around you in case you’re already sick. Through the massive influence of American media, the European far-right adopted this rhetoric, successfully extending the duration of restrictions, by convincing many people to fight agains wearing a mask as it's some major human right issue.

It used to be all free in the Netherland, but thanks to Rutte and the VVD you have to pay more and more, only basics are covered. For instance, if you break your arm? wait 3 to 14 days for the surgery, if you are over 80? they will not help you anymore. And you have to pay for the ordinary painkillers yourself. On the other side: painkillers like oxycodon, lyrica, amytriptilline and all that addictive s**t are being given out as candy. I still wonder why...

There are even drive-thru pharmacies, banks, and coffee shops. In other countries like Spain, people usually enjoy sit-down meals with friends and family. To these people, the concept of taking a cup of coffee through the window is quite alien.

this is shocking that this is the solution that people come out with to gun violence. And people talking about ooh the 2nd amendment says its ok. I am pretty sure when that was written it was with muskets in mind not guns that can fire hundreds of rounds a minute. And regardless if how many kids are killed in mass shootings people still defend it basically they are saying their right to own guns trumps a kids right to go to school without worrying about being murdered.

    Jess Smith

my opinion is that it applies to muskets, you can own all the muskets you want (actually not, _well regulated_ militia) but the fact that we call AR-15s 'guns' like muskets is a sign of our language being wrong. It's like how if you lump Asian and African elephants, split 7 million years ago, together, you have to lump chimps and humans (split 6 million years ago) together. No one's gonna do that, our terminology is just wrong.

This is intentional. Some Christian groups buy these billboards near places they consider sinful, apparently under the impression that it might make people who want to buy adult videos have second thoughts. There's a spot on the highway we drive past a lot, with a couple of these 'Jesus frees you from sin' type signs around a strip club. I can almost guarantee that the purchasers of 'Jesus is watching' did not see the irony in the placement.

What really drives me crazy about this is that a billboard, even in the most rural area, is about 1500-2k a month to run. 24k a year would go a really long way in helping the community, which is what a church SHOULD be doing. You could run a successful food drive or soup kitchen with that money once a month. It could go to rent space for a shelter. It would do so much more good than this sign would ever do to stop people from watching porn. But it's more important to police sex than to do what the leader of your faith actually taught.

While tipping is a common practice in many countries, it is practically a requirement in the States. And no, you can't skimp on tips—15-20% is the expected norm at restaurants.

On the contrary, in countries like Japan, there is an actual cultural principle not to tip anyone, and a good number of European nations include the gratuity within the bill itself.

50% of the peeps I knew/know would die if residing in the USA. I'm surprised the citizens aren't out on the streets, en masse, to force change. I'm also hoping the citizens of the UK do the same to stop it happening here (it's sneaky/gradual, atm).

Allmost 11 years ago I had surgery for colon cancer. 2 days after I got home I got a 45 page bill in the mail.... $351,000--- and that was just the first bill. Almost 11 years later, counting chemo / radiation therapy, two more related hospital stays I'm looking at $4.2 millon... I've got two insurances-- I know they will be happy when I die.

And little kids peek through the gaps or crawl under the doors. Most parents are blase'. I slammed my purse on the head of a kid 7-9 years old, who poked his head under my door as I was changing my pad. He screamed, mom yelled at me. She was finally shouted down by a woman who said she'd accompany me to the store manager. I carry light purses. Kid was a perfect reflection of his mom.

I was in a bathroom once. Two stalls, with several women waiting in line. A little kid, 3-4yo was roaming in & out of the bathroom, unattended (parents were in the store section, restrooms were in the lobby). Kid crawls on the floor and looks under the stall where a teen girl had just entered. "WHY YOU BLEEDIN'? WHY YOU BLEEDIN'?" You could literally feel her freeze like a deer in the headlights. Someone chased the kid out, but the teen wasn't leaving that stall until everyone was gone

Medical bills in the US can be shockingly high compared to countries with universal healthcare, like Canada or the UK. In those places, most people do not have to pay for doctor’s visits, surgeries and staying in the hospital, because this is financed by the state. Here, on the other hand, a simple visit to an emergency department could lead to a bill that runs into hundreds of thousands of dollars.

TBF, in most places it wouldn't be okay to protest (hold an actual demonstration) in a commercial or privately owned space, at least for extended periods. In a public space, it's fine, though often subject to pre-filing an announcement of a public demonstration. (Supposed to guarantee the safety of both the demonstrators and the passersby.) The problem with the USA is that they seem to consider all space privately owned.

And... so what? Malls are private property, they are no more required to host protests than you are in your living room. People who go onto private property in the USA and refuse to leave when told to by the owner, are actually committing crimes.

When it comes to holidays, Americans don’t get much vacation time. With an average of just two weeks of paid vacation, they might feel rushed to squeeze in their trips. Compare that to countries like France or Germany, where five to six weeks of paid holiday is the norm. So it is no surprise that Europeans are said to go globetrotting more often.

One year, my husband (42ish) was too lazy (his words) to go and get the flu shot. He got the flu (of course), and the virus went to his heart and caused a heart attack (I thought he was having a stroke). The surgeon said his arteries were perfect, and this was just damage caused by the virus. He was off work to recover for 5 months, and required daily naps for about four years. Now, he has naps about 3 times a week. He never fully bounced back. Get the damn flu shot. He will never neglect his vaccines again.

Unfortunately that's not quite right. *By law* employees in Germany are entitled to at least 24 days of paid leave per year, assuming they're working six days per week. If working less days per week, this number is adjusted accordingly, resulting in a minimum of 20 days of paid leave for the common arrangement of working five days per week. However, a lot of employers contractually grant their employees more days of paid leave than legally required.

Having a real hard time continuing to find a reason to stay in America. I was born here, but most everywhere else in the civilized, industrialized world, seems to treat their citizens better. I am constantly concerned that if I get sick or if someone in my family does, we could go bankrupt. What would I miss if I live abroad? My sports teams? That is about it I think.

This is only part of the story. In the UK we have statutory maternity leave, where they must keep your job open for you to return to, of 26 weeks, and additional leave of a futher 26 weeks. We also have Statutory Maternity Pay of 90% of wages for 6 weeks (30 days) plus a further 33 weeks at a lower rate. And a lovely little caveat at the end for employers - they must pay SMP even if the stop trading!

When living in the US, it is usually hard to get around without a car unless you are located in a major city like New York or Chicago. On the other hand, when people go to places like India, Bangladesh or other Asian countries, they find and enjoy superb public transportation facilities such as railroads, buses and three-wheeler vehicles.

It's not always the company's fault. Years ago I worked for a baseball stadium. We used to donate all food leftover after games to a local shelter. Then someone took the food to go and ate it like a week later and sued the stadium food provider for food poisoning and won. So they quit donating food.

To be clear, if food is donated in good faith, recipients cannot sue if they get sick/have allergic reactions/etc. Regardless, all across the US and Canada, good food like this is thrown out because uninformed people say "We can't give it away for legal reasons." Yes, you can give it away, yes you can help. You're just choosing not to.

Anyone who says it's a liability doesnt know the law. The US has a Good Samaritan law that protects individuals and businesses. It provides immunity from prosecution should someone get sick...any company, store or individual who says they throw away food rather than donate it because they don't want to be sued are lying. Period.

That's ridiculous, there's a food pantry in town and the grocery stores like Food Lion literally right down the road from it donates bread, cakes, pastries, etc that's getting ready to expire. The bread store that I go to gives expired bread to pig farmers or they did several years ago. Gonna try to remember to ask when I go this week. I thought it was terrible because the homeless shelters could have used it. I know that the color of the tie on the bag is for each day of the week.

They ALREADY spend more than enough for universal healthcare, but the system is so skewed by profiteering, that even the government can't afford it. So they need private ON TOP of that cost.

I worked hospital pharmacy, and that's where the majority of money is made in the hospital. We had a minimum charge of $10 per dose (for things like spirin, which literally cost us less than $0.01 to buy. Everything else had a %500 markup, across the board. At the time Zofra was selling for $14 a pill, so we charged $80 per dose; other hospitals charged MORE. This s**t should be regulated.

There is a big difference between "worth" and "cost to you". Is seems the US pays massively inflated prices for most things medical. However it is worth saying that some cancer medications do costs 10's if not 100's of thousands. In the UK we often have news items where the NHS is under scrutiny for whether they should or should not make very expenive medications available to patients for free.

The NHS doesn't provide free healthcare. The NHS is part of a social system whereby healthcare is provded by those who can pay and those who need healthcare get it - it's imperfect of course, but works pretty well for most people most of the time. It's an example of one aspect of communism actually working: those who can pay, do; those who need, get. Shock, horror! One of Karl Marx's ideas actually working in practice! Of course the USA will never go for it.

2024 California Wildfire Stats here in California: *One person has died *1,433 structures have been destroyed *254 structures have been damaged ***Nearly half of the acres burned are suspected to be due to arson, which is about four times more than the last seven years combined **The Park Fire, which started in Chico in July, is the largest wildfire of the year, burning nearly 430,000 acres and destroying 709 buildings (ARSON!) **I think it was just last week they arrested a Fireman for setting 5 fires while he was off-duty. I hope they throw his a$$ in jail. I'm so tired of my beautiful state always being up in flames. :'(

Are any of you guys noticing the videos now that start and then ten seconds in, they run an ad? Yeah, well, they must be pretty damn stupid to think anyone watches that ad OR the rest of the video. Also, BP, you must be pretty damn stupid to think anyone actually looks at your big pop up ads, too, before they get deleted.

That's sad. How about requiring University education as the prerequisite to teach? This is the standard in Europe. In Finland, it's a Master's degree. (Though don't get me started about the current working conditions in education, they suck.)

Alimento's, IIRC, is one of a number of LA restaurants that claim to be ani-tipping. However, I should point out that Silver Lake is one of the original "gentrified" neighborhoods, so I'm not surprised by that line. I mean, $12 for tater tots? And what is a water donation? Honestly, a $4.53 surcharge is not the worst thing on this receipt.

Not to one-up..but went to an urgent care that I had visited before for a Upper Resp infection. Got a bill for the whole amount, when my BC/BS should have paid 80%. Upon investigation it was reclassified by the conglomerate as a Ready Care, or, an offsite ER. Oh...the hospital ER is 4 blocks away. I refused to pay any more than my 20% co-pay due to their "subterfuge". They threatened credit reporting after a few months. Called my (GOP) Rep. and explained the situation. I sent them 20% right after my call to my Rep. Got an e-mail from McClaren telling me it was paid in full.

I'll one-up your one-up. Friend has her son on her policy. Son went to Urgent Care. Insurance says that's out-of-network and UC says she owes $400. She calls insurance - the place is in-network and they've accepted it previously. Insurances says have UC send it thru again. Friend talks to UC. They were sold recently, have a new name. They send in the insurance bill again. And it's declined. Insurance says they tried it twice, so they won't consider it again. UC realizes they sent it under doctor's name instead of clinic's name, and doctor moved here recently. Whoops, they bad. Oh, and are you going to pay the $400, cuz we're sending it to collections.

No-one has yet commented about the bias which makes the healthcare to constantly and consistently ignore or belittle women's health problems. Pain isn't pain, bleeding isn't bleeding, even tumors aren't tumors in the worst case, since "women always exaggerate." Given the medical costs shown in the other posts, I am wondering what exactly a $49 gift card will get you. "Hello, I'm Dr Smith...sorry, your time is up"

It’d cover 1 call with someone who can’t prescribe meds who tells you to go to urgent care.

$49??? Again gosh bless the NHS here in the UK... We've a free 24hr 111 number that you can phone for medical advice, support and they'll assess if you need an ambulance or hospital transport sent to you should you need to go to hospital... Every single country in the World should have access to a system like ours...

I’ve seen people say (obviously in a different state) that if they have to get the government to claim child support from their ex (because their ex isn’t paying it voluntarily) that they take it out of ex’s wages and ex has to pay more for the effort. It’s crazy that it’s the receiver of child support that is charged in Michigan.

If you have any type of government benefits, you are REQUIRED to cooperate with the state's child support enforcement or you won't receive benefits. Even Medicaid.

In Hungary, the state pays you child support and collects it by force of law from the defaulting parent. The service is free and not a cent is deducted from the amount paid.

South Carolina does this too. They will send the parent who receives child support a letter ASKING if you want them to have the parent who is paying child support to pay the "processing fee" also or if you would be ok having it deducted from your child support

When I was in primary school, I had a male teacher tell me I couldn't go to the bathroom during class as I should have gone at lunch. The reality was I had just realised my period had started, at 11 years old you're still getting used to what a period actually feels like and how to tackle it. So me being a smart-a*s, the next day at recess I took my pad off and purposely asked if I could go to the bathroom. He said no again so I sat there and just let it all bleed through my uniform.

They tried this at the school my daughters went to. They would get penalised even when they had their periods, so I started keeping them home on their heaviest days (as did other parents for their own daughters). The school stopped the system within two months!

Our school had a morning school bag check daily. For electronics (phones, games, etc) cause they are not allowed in the classrooms (students can bring them and leave them in a safe at the entrance). Never caused lines this long. And it was conducted by appointed students. Super chill. Few students would still sneak in phones. But it wasn’t the end of the world cause they weren’t weapons! (No phones and other gadgets in classrooms is a rule in like 95% of the schools in my country. Very effective in my opinion.)

Came For Boxer Briefs. Everything Is Locked Up. I Had To Track Someone Down Just To Get These Unlocked

I pointed at a 10-pack and said “The 10-pack in medium” and they grabbed a 6-pack… Of course, I didn't check (which adds to my mild infuriation) just because I thought they saw and heard. They were both the same price so it only made sense. Didn't realize until I got home. Thought it was fine cause I had to get tums, to find the same thing… And find another associate. Finding someone took about 5 minutes. The funny thing is they just hand it over right after and let you take it to the front.

This is because US chain stores forbid their employees to stop shoplifters. They are afraid of being sued if the employee is injured. Word has gotten around and thieves openly push full carts out without paying. The remedy: Lock stuff up or close stores in high-crime neighborhoods.

One thing about my bigger Tesco near me that has started to annoy me? And there's got to be a reason for it such as not enough staff for whatever reason? Is that there are 20 self service tills but only two staffed checkout ones which aren't always open. I usually go to the cigarette kiosk instead if I've only got say, 8 items if there's noone at the staffed checkout ones. The self service tills don't accept cash, they're cards only.

I travel a lot all over Spain. You can tell what kind of neighbourhood you're in by going to a loxka supermarket and checking out what's locked up. Where I live some have the licor locked up. Some only the premium brands others just have alarm tags. In some places I've been the dish soap was kicked up.

I have to say, grocery stores here in the US don't usually have any place for a customer to sit. Sure, you can use the electric carts to shop, but most stores have only 3 or 4 of those. There's always two in use and two charging. Stores need to get a clue and start putting a few chairs out as their customer base gets older.

Jesus was a great guy. Kind, generous, compassionate, forgiving, socialist, never had a bad word to say about the gays but wasn't keen on the rich - exactly the opposite of all these hate-filled fake Christians that plague the USA. AND he was dead keen on people paying their taxes which does make you wonder how all those non-tax-paying so called "Christian" "churches" in the US justify it.

Meanwhile, Spain passed a comprehensive food waste reduction law which will require supermarkets to donate surplus food and sell at least some amount of wonky vegetables and other “imperfect” foods in their displays. They will be asked to promote ecological, sustainable and seasonal, local products. There are other things in there too, all designed with protecting people and the environment in mind.

If they allowed employees to take food, that could lead to staff trying to force low sales just so they can take leftover food later.

i highly recommend everyone in the US find a credit union they can join. some of them have very easy to meet requirements like "live/work in this county/city" or "live in the same house with someone who is already a member". i've gotten some past roommates qualified for my credit union under that last one. there's even one near me that has eligibility for workplace, or residence location, or family members already members, or, failing all of the above, join a specific non profit community organization for a one time fee of $18, which comes out of your first credit union account deposit. $18 one time beats losing monthly account maintenance fees from big corporate banks.

I have a lot of money in my credit union, and from time to time contemplate moving ALL of my cash there. The only reason I keep anything at Bilk of America is the convenience of ATMs. It isn't easy to find an ATM or office for my credit union.

Why would you continue to stay in that type of account? This is clearly an account where you need to maintain a balance, probably to get interest. So get an account that doesn't require that. Sorry but this is your own stupidity. No one is holding you hostage there and you agree to these terms when you open the account. These fees are not a surprise.

I normally don't advocate things like vandalism and destruction of property. But let's just say, that if you wanted to mess with someone, pouring a bag of sugar in the gas tank would be a subtle and expensive long term way to counter protest. My bestie and I "hypothetically" when we were teenagers, decided to test this on my Sister's Ex after he beat the hell out of her and the legal route didn't work. A midnight excursion to test our "theory" out on his Pick-up truck and our little experiment yielded positive results. Growing up around the type of people that I did provided me with several ideas on how to express my displeasure without leaving evidence behind.

Our rent is ridiculous. Our health care is ridiculous. We pay crazy amounts for everything and we have no say about it. Meanwhile we can't afford to buy houses or have kids anymore. And then we get sh!t from other countries for being fat because cheap food is the only cheap thing we have. So yeah, with my 40 dollar grocery budget, I'm going to buy 10 packs of cheap but fattening ramen for 5 dollars that will last the week, and not the 4 dollar green pepper that will barely last 1 meal.

Poverty = worse food choices. Plus no public transport or very crappy public transport. Plus the factor that everyone overlooks: climate. I live in one of the darkest purple states and for six months of the year the heat and humidity is horrific. The other six months it's raining. There's a reason Colorado is orange and it's because the weather is beautiful 90% of the time.

A former co-worker of mine told me that he grew up in an extremely fundie household, and every Halloween they gave out crud like this, usually Chick "Satanic panic" rubbish. One guess as to which house on his block was a favorite target for eggs and teepeeing. He never got to go trick-or-treating. I grew up in a very religious household. My mom would only pass out candy if she had a card similar to this to give with the candy. On the card was a phone number to call and hear a bible story. Once she ran out of cards, she turned out our light and refused to pass out anymore candy.

Got An Eviction Letter For Being 15 Minutes Late Paying My Rent. Look At These Fees

Got An Eviction Letter For Being 15 Minutes Late Paying My Rent. Look At These Fees

$180 just for writing an eviction letter? Like seriously? You had to write it once and I bet it was years ago. You have copies just lying around!

So, my $1,479 of rent after all these charges and the late fee really means my rent is $1,988. Why is it a bank can tell me I can't afford a $900 mortgage but $2000 for rent? Nah, you got this bro. Two-bedroom dumpster fire with a drywall missing. This isn't the luxury apartment that's advertised, so why charge luxury prices?

There's a difference between telling your kids "no", "you can't have that", and "you can't do that" and screaming at them and physically hurt them. I am on the team of telling my kids no and I allow them to tell me when they think I am being unfair or just stupid. I am often told I am being too soft but on the other hand, when we are at big family gatherings my kids are praised for how polite and well-behaved they are and between all three of them we've only had 1 temper tantrum in a store. So honestly.... I think I am doing a good job doing this mom-thing. (My understanding of "being tough on them" is to be physically hurting the kids and screaming at them for little things. I know that it may not be what everybody understand from the sentence.).

Having To Pay To Wear Shorts At Walmart During A Heatwave In Maine

We are experiencing some crazy heat in the 90's with high humidity. Today alone the heat index is forecasting 110°F. $2 a day to wear shorts during a heat advisory is disgusting. This is the Walmart in Augusta, ME.

Also, check out the bottom where they are no longer providing CUPS for water during the summer. I won't generalize Walmart as being out of touch but this particular location sure is.

Well, this can happen in Germany or the Netherlands as well. Usually roadworks are covered by the monthly/yearly fees to be paid to the city and county. However, under certain circumstances it can happen that you are required to pay for the road or sewage system in front of your house.

If you own a home in the US and a pipe bursts on the street and it's connected to your property (in the sense that it's a main water line connected to everyone on the street), you have to pay for it. They usually split the cost between everyone on the street and if you escrow your insurance/taxes, there's a lien placed on your property and the bank will split it to your over all mtg payment each month over the course of a year. If you own the home and don't have a mtg, they just bill you and you are often forced to get a loan from the bank to pay it because it's usually too much for anyone to just come up with. These costs can be in the 10s of thousands, especially for old lines because they are required to be updated. Another reason I don't want to own a house.

The person who got this letter was informed about the condition of their sidewalk BEFORE the city would have fixed it, to give them a chance to do it themselves. And everyone is right, that's a really cheap price to fix the sidewalk!

Yup, a lot of businesses have different hours for different categories of members. I believe Costco does this too, or at least used to, so businesses could stock up before/after the hordes of retail shoppers. Same with Home Depot for contractors.

Its for outside of normal hours, because the club doesn't open to the public until 10am. Sam's has Business or Advantage members that can come in at 7am, so they can get in and out without having to stand in line. Sam's Club and Costco both require paid memberships in order to shop there since they've opened. I worked at Sam's Club #8241 in Midwest City, OKLA that was the very first Sam's ever built. Until about 10 years after Sam Walton died that company treated us amazingly and ALWAYS took care of us Associates. Once upon a time that company Walton Inc. was considered one of the best places to work, because their starting pay was WAY above minimum wage and the Insurance, 401k, Profit Sharing and the annual Sam's Share (our yearly bonus) was a way to make serious bank. If that company hadn't changed then I never would have left in 2008, It's just sad what they turned that place into now that SW is gone.

Sutures and needles are surprisingly expensive, although maybe not *that* expensive. But there's dressings and fluids for cleaning, disposable gloves and aprons, the disposable covering for the chair/bed the patient's treated on, all sorts of things like that. Then, what with this being US healthcare, the suppliers of all these things have added a 100% markup before it gets to the hospital and the hospital does the same... I'm probably not even being cynical there. 😕

Fish, first of all, as a formerly homeless person, there is no way I'm going to go into the house of someone I don't know who suddenly offers me a place to sleep. I wouldn't take a ride from a stranger and I won't sleep in a stranger's house. Second, how is that solving the problem? Homelessness is caused by a multitude of things, but if you leave out the d***s and alcoholism, homelessness is mostly caused by rents that are way too high and wages that are way too low. Start by doing something to solve those two problems alone and maybe we wouldn't have to worry about where most homeless people are sleeping.

This was posted 2 years ago at the height of groceries costing a fortune. I had a similarly sized cart for $100. Can get a lot more for that at Meijer now, although I'd ditch the frozen tuna steaks and the prepackaged beef. Cheap cuts of pork (country ribs) run like $6 for few pounds, chicken breasts aren't too much (I picked up a fcking ton of thighs for $6 last week).

Give me a $100 to use at Wal-Mart and my locally owned grocery store and I can make a killing! It's all about sales, store brands, amount of meals off one thing and I can make a penny scream (Thank you, Mom!) and get enough food to last a month. I'm on disability and literally every penny counts when it comes to my food budget for the month. There are so many things wrong with this picture that it's not even funny, because someone doesn't know how to shop.

Still expensive. Steak in the UK is from grass-fed cows by default (that's how we raise cattle), and while tuna can be a bit pricy, those particular steaks would only be about £12 in total. That whole shop, based on what I can see, wouldn't be more than £50 / $60 here.

This reminds me of the trick most pop singers use. They all say they sing live at the gigs even though many have been caught out. But yes, the do sing live but what they sing into the mic on stage is not what you her through the PA.

Somebody has to pay for the electricity. Most "free" things are paid for somehow or other. I wonder how many months the bill went unpaid, since $13,334.68 would buy around 51000kWh at the current average California commercial electricity rate. Or enough to charge a Nissan Leaf from 0% 1275 times.

I think that's coming from a local Whole Foods? I tried ordering something once from Amazon and when it asked for a tip I was like, "TF?!" Then went back and saw that's what it was (Amazon owns Whole Foods Markets).

I saw an item on Amazon that asked for a tip also. It was from a 3rd party seller, so it wasn't Amazon asking for a tip, however, I don't think that should be allowed on Amazon, if you want more money for an item just include it in the price, not ask for a tip & make me feel like if I don't tip that my item will either not show up or it will be "funky"

Give it a few years. Change is coming, and it's coming fast - most Americans object to the current anti-woman agenda being imposed by a frankly tiny minority of billionaire backed extremists who - well, it's complicated, but it is in fact a well organised conspiracy aimed at imposing their ideas on the whole nation. Biblical fundamentalism and all. It won't last and the backlash will, I hope, sweep them away. I might be wrong and if I am, try reading Robert Heinlein's "Revolt in 2100" for a preview of what's coming. 😉

Honestly, I'm so tired of getting my food wrong at fast food restaurants I'm not opposed to the food being cooked/assembled by AI. I generally push for human workers but I'm just so tired of it. It's literally every time I go. I get a sandwich with extra cheese and onions- which I pay $2 extra for, btw- and i don't get it. I worked for McDonald's for almost 10 years all through school and I know how stupid their systems are. There are no QA controls to make sure the sandwich is made right. 4 people are wearing headsets including the initiator (the person who builds the sandwich on the grill) and they still mess it up. And you get old, cold buns and meat that's been in the holding tray well over its time. It would be one thing if prices were still cheaper to offset the annoyance of not getting what you ordered but that isn't the case anymore. They've done this to themselves.

Used to work away from home a lot, had a van full of tools that we’d lug into the hotel and out again every day, most of my tools were my own and whilst they were insured the aggravation of replacing them / missing out on work was not worth taking the risk, we had a trolley in the van for shifting tools. If we were lucky we’d get a few days at one location and space to lock them in. Humans eh? Urgh.

Training to drive a powerful sports car is highly recommended. I'm sure many countries have stories where someone bought their dream car and then wrapped it around a tree a few days later because they couldn't handle it.

Famous in the Netherlands about 10 years ago. A guy bought a brand new Ferrari, waiting about a year before it was delivered. Picked it up at the dealership, exited the driveway, and crashed it 300m/1.000ft down the road. Totaled it.

I think there are many confused europeans in the comments on this one. That sticker is not regulated in any way. You can just buy one. In this case, I'm certain it was intended as a joke.

It's either a joke or a fancy driving school. I've seen Porsches, Ferraris and Maseratis as student cars here in Europe.

I'm sure that car has been wrecked by now.

doesn´t need to be a Porsche. Teslas, BMWs, Mercedes, Range Rovers, any large Pick up, all these vehicles do not belong in the hands of new drivers. They should drive, like, late 90s-early 2000s Geo Metros or unmodified Honda Civics for the first year or two.

Uhhhh...folks....while you're all flipping out about the sticker...there's no plate on the car. Nobody's driving it, student or pro

I would love this. I would follow it around - at a prudent distance - and watch the mayhem the kid works on this plutomobile.

This could be a joke- it would be funny if that was on the back of a school bus

Doesn't surprise me airlines would do this, regardless of country. My brother and his partner recently had flights from Noosa to Melbourne delayed and then cancelled due to weather (both on the way there and back). They had to stay in a hotel overnight when the last was cancelled and the next flight didn't leave until the day after. The only compensation from the airline was a $25 voucher to a local restaurant where that amount wouldn't even cover the full cost of the cheapest meal.

I'm just going to say this; we need to let it go. 9-11-2001 was TWENTY-THREE years ago now. There are people that have been legally able to vote for five years that have never known a pre-9/11 world. That is an entire generation. I am NOT advocating that we forget the past; the past is important. Memory and reverence are important. But wallowing in the past won't help anyone. We have got to move forward.

Sad that a tragedy has turned into a marketing ploy. Soon they'll have greeting cards and decorations for it.

Fiat Products sell commercial plumbing fixtures. I see nothing wrong with this.

This idiot really thinks they're trying to sell Fiats to Americans through drainhole advertising? I mean, guess there's a reason they're in a psych ward...

There are different levels of need at mental health hospitals. Many patients are there by choice and there is no reason they shouldn't have their phones. Your comment sounds naïve and disrespectful.

"Fiat" is Latin for "Let it be done". Yeah, get out of the shower and get on to work. There's no avoiding it.

The enormous percentage of American sports venues that are named after insurance companies and such make my head spin.
