If you grew up watching American movies, you probably have a certain image of the United States—a land where dreams come true, everyone’s chasing success, and patriotism runs deep. But hey, there's so much more to the US than what Hollywood shows us!
Today, we’ve put together a collection of intriguing and surprising things about life in America that might catch you off guard, leave you questioning some stereotypes, or make you realize that life in the U.S. isn’t always as glamorous as it seems in the movies. So, Pandas, let's dive into the real deal! This post may include affiliate links.
"We Don't Know Your Address"
American Health Insurance is beyond stupid. If it was a person, it would be unable to wipe it's own butt. That's how stupid American health insurance is.
Load More Replies...After my brother died, a life insurance company send me a letter which began "We note from Social Security records that your brother died recently." In the instructions for claiming the policy, they required a death certificate. Dudes, didn't you already just tell me you knew he was dead?
I got one of those! My insurance sent me a letter saying they need proof of my address. To determine if I'm within the coverage area
That wording makes sense, though. Account providers etc may ask for utility bills or similar to prove an address, to avoid people supplying fake addresses for fraud.
Load More Replies...I have insurance through the state, and every year I go through this. I haven't moved in six years, and they send me tons of junk mail. Stuff like, "Did you know, your child can get a flu shot?" But, whenever it's time to reapply, they say they can't find me, and tell me they sent it to some address I have never heard of. This year, I brought in all the mail they'd sent in the last two months, to prove they knew my address.

While it may make sense to put it in rhyme, it’s utterly appalling that it’s needed

Here in the UK, I often read of US folks trying to do something about the high rate of gun violence. Unfortunately, they are always up against powerful opposition. Maybe someone in the US ought to start talking about "the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." when arguing for measures to reduce deaths by gunshot - make it into a return to the original values of the USA and all that. After all, getting shot dead does rather deny a person to the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. America is a place full of quirks that can feel completely foreign to outsiders. From the suspiciously big serving sizes to tipping for a cup of coffee to even just how people go about their lives, the experience of being in America can be a real shocker for visitors and new immigrants.
And while some things don’t fully make sense until you’re actually there, these posts give you a fun glimpse into the quirks of American life. They might not prepare you for everything, but they’ll definitely show you a unique side of the States.
The Guy On The Left Has Had A Slew Of Signs Like This
Women voting is what will hopefully save America this election cycle!

Yes, there's knife crime in the UK but? Sorry to put it like this but? A knife is up close and personal. A gun is too, apart from high powered rifles et al... At the end of the day? There needs to be far more stricter gun laws but... Knives... Every single kitchen in the world more than likely probably has one... I just don't know or have any answer... Sorry it's... Just to make it ALL about me??? If a gun had been present the night my ex did what he did to me? I highly doubt I'd be alive right now, at least with a knife? I'd have had a somewhat "fighting chance"...

Florida Teacher Here. This Is Our School's "Library" Now
Florida passed a law that said no books can be displayed in a school until they've been reviewed and approved by an appointed team. If a teacher shows a book that has not been approved, they could be charged with a felony.

Reminds me of book burning in Germany/Hitler. And why aren't the books reviewed prior to going to the schools, if they're so intent on doing this?
Books have always been reviewed by librarians. Now, though, they must first be approved by the government-appointed team of (no-doubt) far-right bigots who call themselves Christians.
Load More Replies...I've heard of 'Florida Man', and all the weird stuff these Floridians do, but this has go to rank exceptionally highly on the 'They've done WHAT?!' scale.
Most Floridians oppose the bans but the governor and other elected leaders push them through anyway. Why? Because the far-right minority wants them to. Why do what the minority wants over the objections of the majority? Because that minority votes in much, much higher numbers making them the functional majority. Infuriating that so many moderates and liberals give away their power like that but hopefully things like this will wake them up before it's too late.

Yep, I'm in the UK but my employer also gives private medical insurance. Anytime I've tried to use it I gave to jump through 100' s hoops only for them to get so far and say the rest of the treatment isn't covered. NHS picks up mid treatment and guess what? It's the same consultant as they do both private /NHS. All doctors are NHS trained so private doesn't mean better doctors or care.

Insurance initially denied coverage because I didn't get advance permission for the hospital stay. It's not like I was there for funsies. Also, a doctor's office fought my insurance for over a year to get a treatment the insurance denied as "experimental" despite having been fully approved by the FDA for fourteen years. They pulled shady b******t by sending me completely illegible forms to try and fight my case, but the doctor's office used a third-party service that had pristine copies of the forms to send me whenever insurance pulled that garbage.
Not only is that cruel to you and everyone who cares about you but all of that time and effort just adds exponentially to the cost of healthcare in the first place. The whole thing is obscene. I hope you are all doing well.

He said I can't believe you are wasting y time on this when I have sick patients. The insurance person just stammered through the conversation & approved the CT scan. I once had my insurance company refuse to cover a doctor's visit when I broke my arm because it was a "pre-existing condition." Like yes, the condition existed prior to my arriving at the doctor's office, but I figure that's why we go to the doctor's office in general?!?!!?

United States Of Convenience
Just a reminder to anyone voting in the USA in November. 2020 SUCKED! It sucked harder than any year in my almost half century of life. Do you really want TFG in charge again?
Depends. If they're planning in advance for a time when it is safe to return, that's smarter than most school boards. "In the first place God made idiots. This was for practice. Then he made school boards." - Mark Twain
Or you dont close schools at all. These post really show how different covid was approached. We where just told to not send sick kids to school.
Apart from their supersized food, Americans have a reputation of being fans of sugared beverages as well. If you are planning on visiting the US, prepare for a lot of flavored sodas and sweet iced teas.
Compared to countries like Italy, where people sip on small, strong espressos, or Japan, where green tea is the norm, US drinks are super sweet and come in sizes that could last all day.
Only In America Would A Restaurant Display On The Wall That They Don’t Pay Their Staff Enough To Live On
The minimum wage needs to be a livable wage. That it's still $7.25/hr in so many places is beyond obscene. And it's not just about raising it. It's about including a provision in the law that automatically raises it every year or two to keep up with inflation. Otherwise we'll just end up right back in this same place again and again.
Load More Replies...Businesses here get named and shamed (and sued) if they don't pay the minimum wage. Ditto women not paid the same as men for doing similar work. Thank you trades unions.
Same here in the U.S. [Which isn't to say that some don't still try it.] But our minimum wage in most places is obscenely low. For context, if you calculate what a MW worker takes home after taxes and the rent for an average 1 bedroom, they have to work about 33.5 days just to cover one month's rent. Which is obviously f****d. That's what needs to change. Focusing solely on tipped workers (many of whom make *significantly* more than MW) is a distraction from the real issue.
Load More Replies...Yep, make cr@p wages the customers’ problem not the businesses’ - great. The sign needs to read ‘Did you know our servers survive on your tipping kindness because we don’t pay them enough?’
The minimum wage isn't enough no matter what kind of employment it is! At least these employees have the potential to earn more. Most don't. It needs to be raised and the law needs to provide for it to go up every year to keep up with inflation.
Load More Replies...This is a group of restaurants from where I live. They have mediocre BBQ and religious propaganda everywhere. I cannot recommend. 2024-09-23...469571.jpg
Did you know our servers have to beg for a living from strangers coz we don't pay them?
The problem is, restaurants have been allowed and even encouraged to run a certain way for a Very Long Time, they cannot/will not change overnight. BUT those people that don't tip anymore to try to force the business to change are ONLY HARMING THE SERVER, not the business. The business still got your money, because you came and dined there. So if you really want to get the businesses attention, don't go there. BUT (last one) the catch 22 is that boycotting the business only also hurts the servers, because the business will cut staff before paying them more.
If servers don't make enough in tips to add to the minuscule amount they pay to equal minimum wage, they get fired.

Load More Replies...Ah come on. This isn't a USA thing. There's plenty of idiots around the world. Perhaps it's just that more 'air time' is given to the American ones.
As a dual citizen of the US and the EU, I’ve experienced this firsthand. The absurd conspiracy theories and whining about masks and social distancing totally started in the USA, and only a few months later began to influence the rest of the world. While most people could have lived with some temporary restrictions, in the US it became part of the usual polarized and oversimplified political discussion. The hyperindividualistic nature of the US also hindered the understanding of simple concepts, such as that masks are not meant to protect you directly, but to protect those around you in case you’re already sick. Through the massive influence of American media, the European far-right adopted this rhetoric, successfully extending the duration of restrictions, by convincing many people to fight agains wearing a mask as it's some major human right issue.

Having free healthcare is something you just take for granted in NZ/UK. I had a baby, broke my arm etc, and never considered the cost at all! Why can't the US get Government funded/tax paid healthcare?! I don't understand.
It used to be all free in the Netherland, but thanks to Rutte and the VVD you have to pay more and more, only basics are covered. For instance, if you break your arm? wait 3 to 14 days for the surgery, if you are over 80? they will not help you anymore. And you have to pay for the ordinary painkillers yourself. On the other side: painkillers like oxycodon, lyrica, amytriptilline and all that addictive s**t are being given out as candy. I still wonder why...

On top of this, they have truly become successful at being able to do things quickly, especially when it comes to food. There are many fast food places in the States that come with drive-thru features. But that’s not simply it.
There are even drive-thru pharmacies, banks, and coffee shops. In other countries like Spain, people usually enjoy sit-down meals with friends and family. To these people, the concept of taking a cup of coffee through the window is quite alien.

I am pretty sure when that was written it was with muskets in mind not guns that can fire hundreds of rounds a minute. And regardless if how many kids are killed in mass shootings people still defend it basically they are saying their right to own guns trumps a kids right to go to school without worrying about being murdered.
my opinion is that it applies to muskets, you can own all the muskets you want (actually not, _well regulated_ militia) but the fact that we call AR-15s 'guns' like muskets is a sign of our language being wrong. It's like how if you lump Asian and African elephants, split 7 million years ago, together, you have to lump chimps and humans (split 6 million years ago) together. This is intentional. Some Christian groups buy these billboards near places they consider sinful, apparently under the impression that it might make people who want to buy adult videos have second thoughts. There's a spot on the highway we drive past a lot, with a couple of these 'Jesus frees you from sin' type signs around a strip club. I can almost guarantee that the purchasers of 'Jesus is watching' did not see the irony in the placement.
Completely agree, I am from this town and that was their intention. But all it did here was make way more business than they would have had otherwise. Funny af.

Load More Replies...What really drives me crazy about this is that a billboard, even in the most rural area, is about 1500-2k a month to run. 24k a year would go a really long way in helping the community, which is what a church SHOULD be doing. You could run a successful food drive or soup kitchen with that money once a month. It could go to rent space for a shelter. It would do so much more good than this sign would ever do to stop people from watching porn. But it's more important to police sex than to do what the leader of your faith actually taught.

America In 4 Words
Medical bills in the US can be shockingly high compared to countries with universal healthcare, like Canada or the UK. In those places, most people do not have to pay for doctor’s visits, surgeries and staying in the hospital, because this is financed by the state. Here, on the other hand, a simple visit to an emergency department could lead to a bill that runs into hundreds of thousands of dollars.
On Hold With Covered California For Over 11 Hours Because They Canceled Our Health Insurance
Most of what is wrong with medicine in the U.S. has to do with money. For profit insurance companies, for profit hospitals, and advertising d***s to consumers are by far the worst offenders. Said as a resident of the U.S.

There are different rules when you make that property open to the general public. But there still are rules.
Load More Replies...TBF, in most places it wouldn't be okay to protest (hold an actual demonstration) in a commercial or privately owned space, at least for extended periods. In a public space, it's fine, though often subject to pre-filing an announcement of a public demonstration. (Supposed to guarantee the safety of both the demonstrators and the passersby.) The problem with the USA is that they seem to consider all space privately owned.
They decided to have this text shown all big instead of just have some security guy accompany this protester to the outside?!
And... so what? Malls are private property, they are no more required to host protests than you are in your living room. People who go onto private property in the USA and refuse to leave when told to by the owner, are actually committing crimes.
When it comes to holidays, Americans don’t get much vacation time. With an average of just two weeks of paid vacation, they might feel rushed to squeeze in their trips. Compare that to countries like France or Germany, where five to six weeks of paid holiday is the norm. So it is no surprise that Europeans are said to go globetrotting more often.

My brother had a stroke at 32. One year in hospital including therapy, years of specialist and hospital visits, procedures for stents you name it, he went through it. Passed 11 years ago at 56. Total bill...$0. Except for medications which were capped at $500 annually, after that free.

One year, my husband (42ish) was too lazy (his words) to go and get the flu shot. He got the flu (of course), and the virus went to his heart and caused a heart attack (I thought he was having a stroke). The surgeon said his arteries were perfect, and this was just damage caused by the virus. He was off work to recover for 5 months, and required daily naps for about four years. Now, he has naps about 3 times a week. He never fully bounced back. Get the damn flu shot. He will never neglect his vaccines again.
Ohhhhh I can't even imagine what it's like when you're afraid to get poorly or have an accident! Good luck to everyone involved in these circumstances
And America thinks capitalism is the best economical system, when socialistic and socialdemocratic systems would get you these medical procedures for free. Go figure!
Paid Leave By Country
And yes Go Denmark! I am not sure what the flag looks like but it is above zero.
Load More Replies...30 right now in Germany. Plus paid days for when your child is sick, parental leave etc
Unfortunately that's not quite right. *By law* employees in Germany are entitled to at least 24 days of paid leave per year, assuming they're working six days per week. If working less days per week, this number is adjusted accordingly, resulting in a minimum of 20 days of paid leave for the common arrangement of working five days per week. However, a lot of employers contractually grant their employees more days of paid leave than legally required.
Load More Replies...It's actually 29 in New Zealand + paid sick + paid bereavement + paid parental.

One reason you might stay is you need to have a marketable skill to get into most developed nations. Or marry someone from there.

In the UK we have statutory maternity leave, where they must keep your job open for you to return to, of 26 weeks, and additional leave of a futher 26 weeks. We also have Statutory Maternity Pay of 90% of wages for 6 weeks (30 days) plus a further 33 weeks at a lower rate. And a lovely little caveat at the end for employers - they must pay SMP even if the stop trading!
I find it very strange you think we must like this situation. So many people here work themselves to death, hate the system and would love to change it. But you call us proud losers? It certainly seems like Americans aren't the only ones with problems.

It's not always the company's fault. Years ago I worked for a baseball stadium. We used to donate all food leftover after games to a local shelter. Then someone took the food to go and ate it like a week later and sued the stadium food provider for food poisoning and won. So they quit donating food.
Load More Replies...It is, but the litigation culture that prevents American businesses from donating food isn't prevalent elsewhere.
Load More Replies...Yep. Many supermarkets eg Tesco, Co-op and places like Pret in the UK ensure food goes to help feed people in need as part of Community Food Connection Scheme.
Load More Replies...To be clear, if food is donated in good faith, recipients cannot sue if they get sick/have allergic reactions/etc. Regardless, all across the US and Canada, good food like this is thrown out because uninformed people say "We can't give it away for legal reasons." Yes, you can give it away, yes you can help. You're just choosing not to.
But, also to be fair, a lot of people don't know they can't be sued. Just look at all the comments on this post saying you can be. Here's the U.S. law proving you can't: https://www.usda.gov/sites/default/files/documents/FAQs-GoodSamaritanAct.pdf Let's all spread the word.

I thought it was terrible because the homeless shelters could have used it. I know that the color of the tie on the bag is for each day of the week.
I am guessing they are doing it due to taxes. Around 15-20y ago there as something like this in PL. Somebody wanted to show how cool some bakery is by showing in the Internet they are giving unsold bread to homeless. Tax agency showed up, give GIANT fee for not putting this in income and I am not sure but I think it almost put owner in prison.
What income? This would be expenditure not income - and rich people etc give to charity as a tax write-off all the time. This doesn't make sense.

Load More Replies...22k for a bit of bloodworks??? O come on America! Who is pocketing all this money?
I worked hospital pharmacy, and that's where the majority of money is made in the hospital. We had a minimum charge of $10 per dose (for things like spirin, which literally cost us less than $0.01 to buy. Everything else had a %500 markup, across the board. At the time Zofra was selling for $14 a pill, so we charged $80 per dose; other hospitals charged MORE. This s**t should be regulated.
What happens when you can’t pay? Surely that’s the situation for the majority of Americans without insurance?
Well, if you have a house then you no longer have a house. If you have anything of value, it is reposessed and sold off. 600 000 people are bankrupted in USA per year for medical bills.

There is a big difference between "worth" and "cost to you". Is seems the US pays massively inflated prices for most things medical. However it is worth saying that some cancer medications do costs 10's if not 100's of thousands. In the UK we often have news items where the NHS is under scrutiny for whether they should or should not make very expenive medications available to patients for free.
$400 a pill. One cannot put a price on living... but insurance and big pharma sure can!!!
I have MS, my last treatment consisted of exactly 8 pills (and a battery of exams before and after). I live in Ireland, it cost me 0. I looked for the price in the US, out of curiosity: 10 mg Mavenclad oral tablet from $43,839.06 for 4 tablets (source: d***s.com)

I can't even, nor want to, imagine what it must be like in America to have Cancer (f*ck Cancer btw) and have these bills... I know enough from one friend who has Fibromyalgia that it's bad and I wish with all my heart that you had free Healthcare
The NHS doesn't provide free healthcare. The NHS is part of a social system whereby healthcare is provded by those who can pay and those who need healthcare get it - it's imperfect of course, but works pretty well for most people most of the time. It's an example of one aspect of communism actually working: those who can pay, do; those who need, get. Shock, horror! One of Karl Marx's ideas actually working in practice! Of course the USA will never go for it.

Drove To An Urgent Care To Have My Throat Looked At, Got To An Exam Room, And Learned They Were Only Doing Telehealth Visits When They Wheeled This In
Not to one-up..but went to an urgent care that I had visited before for a Upper Resp infection. Got a bill for the whole amount, when my BC/BS should have paid 80%. Upon investigation it was reclassified by the conglomerate as a Ready Care, or, an offsite ER. Oh...the hospital ER is 4 blocks away. I refused to pay any more than my 20% co-pay due to their "subterfuge". They threatened credit reporting after a few months. Called my (GOP) Rep. and explained the situation. I sent them 20% right after my call to my Rep. Got an e-mail from McClaren telling me it was paid in full.
I'll one-up your one-up. Friend has her son on her policy. Son went to Urgent Care. Insurance says that's out-of-network and UC says she owes $400. She calls insurance - the place is in-network and they've accepted it previously. Insurances says have UC send it thru again. Friend talks to UC. They were sold recently, have a new name. They send in the insurance bill again. And it's declined. Insurance says they tried it twice, so they won't consider it again. UC realizes they sent it under doctor's name instead of clinic's name, and doctor moved here recently. Whoops, they bad. Oh, and are you going to pay the $400, cuz we're sending it to collections.

For all non-US residents, this is not common here by any stretch. I've never seen anything like this anywhere.
This is because US chain stores forbid their employees to stop shoplifters. They are afraid of being sued if the employee is injured. Word has gotten around and thieves openly push full carts out without paying. The remedy: Lock stuff up or close stores in high-crime neighborhoods.

I have to say, grocery stores here in the US don't usually have any place for a customer to sit. Sure, you can use the electric carts to shop, but most stores have only 3 or 4 of those. There's always two in use and two charging. Stores need to get a clue and start putting a few chairs out as their customer base gets older.
An apple a day, keeps the doctor away but that's not how it works...
I see she has lettuce in her bag. I'm going to go sit on and fart on some lettuce and ask her to eat it afterward and watch the hissy fit she's going to have.

Meanwhile, Spain passed a comprehensive food waste reduction law which will require supermarkets to donate surplus food and sell at least some amount of wonky vegetables and other “imperfect” foods in their displays. Bank Of America Is Slowly Draining My Savings Account Because I Don’t Have Enough Money In My Account
Im from Estonia and I STILL managed to get disappointed by BoA - they somehow managed to loose 60K USD (not mine thank heaven). How does a bank even do this?
Load More Replies...i highly recommend everyone in the US find a credit union they can join. some of them have very easy to meet requirements like "live/work in this county/city" or "live in the same house with someone who is already a member". i've gotten some past roommates qualified for my credit union under that last one. there's even one near me that has eligibility for workplace, or residence location, or family members already members, or, failing all of the above, join a specific non profit community organization for a one time fee of $18, which comes out of your first credit union account deposit. $18 one time beats losing monthly account maintenance fees from big corporate banks.
I have a lot of money in my credit union, and from time to time contemplate moving ALL of my cash there. The only reason I keep anything at Bilk of America is the convenience of ATMs. It isn't easy to find an ATM or office for my credit union.
Load More Replies...We're having the same development in Germany. Banks are raising fees for everything, it's almost impossible to find a bank that doesn't, and it's also impossible to live without a bank account.
I had BoA accounts by virtue of them purchasing the smaller bank I had originally signed up with. They were an awful company from that day until the day I closed those accounts.
In Canada I have to maintain a balance of $4000 or it's $18/month for "service fees".
Why would you continue to stay in that type of account? This is clearly an account where you need to maintain a balance, probably to get interest. So get an account that doesn't require that. Sorry but this is your own stupidity. No one is holding you hostage there and you agree to these terms when you open the account. These fees are not a surprise.

When I went to Florida as a kid I was shocked by the abundance of obese people. I had never seen fat people on electric wheelchairs or whatever you call the things before
This whole list shows how expensive, dangerous and ridiculous it is to live here and you're wondering why we're fat when groceries are the only controllable cost in our lives? Our rent is ridiculous. Our health care is ridiculous. We pay crazy amounts for everything and we have no say about it. Meanwhile we can't afford to buy houses or have kids anymore. And then we get sh!t from other countries for being fat because cheap food is the only cheap thing we have. So yeah, with my 40 dollar grocery budget, I'm going to buy 10 packs of cheap but fattening ramen for 5 dollars that will last the week, and not the 4 dollar green pepper that will barely last 1 meal.
Poverty = worse food choices. Plus no public transport or very crappy public transport. Plus the factor that everyone overlooks: climate. I live in one of the darkest purple states and for six months of the year the heat and humidity is horrific. The other six months it's raining. There's a reason Colorado is orange and it's because the weather is beautiful 90% of the time.
It looks like a political map of the US. Darker purple is red, orange/pink is blue.

Happy Halloween? Found In My Kids' Bucket
One thing's for sure: whoever handed that out is pretty much the opposite of a Christian. The Bible has a lot to say about fake Christians and similar hypocrties.
A former co-worker of mine told me that he grew up in an extremely fundie household, and every Halloween they gave out crud like this, usually Chick "Satanic panic" rubbish. One guess as to which house on his block was a favorite target for eggs and teepeeing. He never got to go trick-or-treating. Now he is not on speaking terms with his parents, and is a confirmed atheist.
I grew up in a very religious household. My mom would only pass out candy if she had a card similar to this to give with the candy. On the card was a phone number to call and hear a bible story. Once she ran out of cards, she turned out our light and refused to pass out anymore candy.
Whatever your view of Christianity, you know Jesus hated people like this.

Got An Eviction Letter For Being 15 Minutes Late Paying My Rent. Look At These Fees
$180 just for writing an eviction letter? Like seriously? You had to write it once and I bet it was years ago. You have copies just lying around!
So, my $1,479 of rent after all these charges and the late fee really means my rent is $1,988. Why is it a bank can tell me I can't afford a $900 mortgage but $2000 for rent? Nah, you got this bro. Two-bedroom dumpster fire with a drywall missing. This isn't the luxury apartment that's advertised, so why charge luxury prices?
FYI: "Luxury Apartment" is only defined as a unit having its own laundry facilities. It could be a tar paper shanty, but it qualifies as a "luxury apartment" if it has a washer and dryer.
By whose definition? In what place? Where I live, luxury is in the eye of the beholder. The word has no legal meaning.
Load More Replies...And pest control fee? Yeah, landlord, you are required to ensure the place you rent out is not infested with pests.
Always check if there is a tenant/landlord ordinance where you live. The city of Chicago (US) has one of the strictest. Most of this is illegal there. If you don't have one, time to get active and contact your politicians.
this person was not "15 minutes late" on their rent, they were 3 months behind, which is why there are 3 different water bills. also means their rent was around $500/month.
this could be for one month. we have two different water charges, one for in our unit and the other for water in "common areas". we also pay our electric separate from the apartments but still have an electric charge for the common areas.

I am often told I am being too soft but on the other hand, when we are at big family gatherings my kids are praised for how polite and well-behaved they are and between all three of them we've only had 1 temper tantrum in a store. So honestly.... I think I am doing a good job doing this mom-thing. (My understanding of "being tough on them" is to be physically hurting the kids and screaming at them for little things. Yea.. City property until snow needs to be clear. Then it's yours. At least in PL.
Load More Replies...We have this in our town in the US. We have to pay half for sidewalk repairs!! But why? The sidewalk is the town's property and it's used by hundreds of people, not me. Taxes should cover all of it!
Well, this can happen in Germany or the Netherlands as well. Usually roadworks are covered by the monthly/yearly fees to be paid to the city and county. However, under certain circumstances it can happen that you are required to pay for the road or sewage system in front of your house.
If the city is going to charge me for the sidewalk, I'm putting up a fence and a gate and charging a toll.
If you own a home in the US and a pipe bursts on the street and it's connected to your property (in the sense that it's a main water line connected to everyone on the street), you have to pay for it. They usually split the cost between everyone on the street and if you escrow your insurance/taxes, there's a lien placed on your property and the bank will split it to your over all mtg payment each month over the course of a year. If you own the home and don't have a mtg, they just bill you and you are often forced to get a loan from the bank to pay it because it's usually too much for anyone to just come up with. These costs can be in the 10s of thousands, especially for old lines because they are required to be updated. Another reason I don't want to own a house.
Where? I'm 44, never heard of this. This is the kind of thing property taxes pay for.

Yup, a lot of businesses have different hours for different categories of members. I believe Costco does this too, or at least used to, so businesses could stock up before/after the hordes of retail shoppers. Same with Home Depot for contractors.
Load More Replies...Its for outside of normal hours, because the club doesn't open to the public until 10am. Sam's has Business or Advantage members that can come in at 7am, so they can get in and out without having to stand in line. Sam's Club and Costco both require paid memberships in order to shop there since they've opened. I worked at Sam's Club #8241 in Midwest City, OKLA that was the very first Sam's ever built. Until about 10 years after Sam Walton died that company treated us amazingly and ALWAYS took care of us Associates. Once upon a time that company Walton Inc. was considered one of the best places to work, because their starting pay was WAY above minimum wage and the Insurance, 401k, Profit Sharing and the annual Sam's Share (our yearly bonus) was a way to make serious bank. Cut My Finger And Got 4 Stitches. This Is Why Americans Avoid Hospitals As Much As Possible
That's why you should either go to your PCP office if they do stitches or an Urgent Care, it's a lot cheaper for you and the insurance
On two separate occasions, I have gotten a letter from my health insurance company saying essentially "We have to deny the charges your hospital sent us for your surgery because those idiots don't know how to fill out a simple form correctly. If they come to you for money, don't send them a dime. Sooner or later they'll figure it out." And they did.
I recently cut my finger and it needed stitches and I literally duck taped it together until it healed enough to take it off. I have a scar and I don't care because I don't want to go through paying that kind of money.
My ultrasound to check on lumps for possible BREAST CANCER are over $1k each time, after insurance. and they want to check them every 3 months. i was like, yeah i'll just take my chances and i'll come back if something starts growing outside my body.
It's ridiculous how many severe injuries I and my family and friends know how to treat at home (and just how much of the supplies needed for said treatment we keep in our homes).
$500 of that is only once per year, but still. It should be free.
Damn...how much do THEY pay for needle and thread? That's not the fee for stitching, that's the supplies.
Sutures and needles are surprisingly expensive, although maybe not *that* expensive. But there's dressings and fluids for cleaning, disposable gloves and aprons, the disposable covering for the chair/bed the patient's treated on, all sorts of things like that. Then, what with this being US healthcare, the suppliers of all these things have added a 100% markup before it gets to the hospital and the hospital does the same... I'm probably not even being cynical there. 😕

I wouldn't take a ride from a stranger and I won't sleep in a stranger's house. Second, how is that solving the problem? Homelessness is caused by a multitude of things, but if you leave out the d***s and alcoholism, homelessness is mostly caused by rents that are way too high and wages that are way too low. Start by doing something to solve those two problems alone and maybe we wouldn't have to worry about where most homeless people are sleeping.
And then they complain because the homeless in Las Vegas sleep in the tunnels under the city.

Cheap cuts of pork (country ribs) run like $6 for few pounds, chicken breasts aren't too much (I picked up a fcking ton of thighs for $6 last week).
To be fair, tuna steaks are quite pricey everywhere! Beef too! Just the tuna steaks, beef and the coconut milk would add up to more than 50-60 dollars in most European countries as well! That isn't to say it is fair, by no means!
Give me a $100 to use at Wal-Mart and my locally owned grocery store and I can make a killing! It's all about sales, store brands, amount of meals off one thing and I can make a penny scream (Thank you, Mom!) and get enough food to last a month. They have 1 steak dinner for at least 2 and 2-3 other meat dinners (tuna chicken is family sized) and breakfast for a week. $100 sounds about right.
Still expensive. Steak in the UK is from grass-fed cows by default (that's how we raise cattle), and while tuna can be a bit pricy, those particular steaks would only be about £12 in total. That whole shop, based on what I can see, wouldn't be more than £50 / $60 here.

I might be wrong and if I am, try reading Robert Heinlein's "Revolt in 2100" for a preview of what's coming. 😉

Yes, but a safe gun user doesn't just drop unused ammo and leave it lying around.

Like the bit on 60 Minutes I saw last night on Scrip prices. The patent was expiring on a medicine, making it available for generic mfg status. They added a cap keeper strap to the inhaler so the patent wouldn't expire, same medicine, different bottle, essentially.

Tipping Culture Is Getting Out Of Hand
I'm thinking out figuring tip amounts using imaginary numbers. You do have i (the square root of -1) on your cash register, don't you?
How about we have no context here. Why is this "out of control", aside from an overall pro/anti-tipping stance?
how about the server didn't put the tip percentage recommendations on the receipt, the owner did. just give them 20% for good service. it's not that hard.
Went To A Drive-Thru And They Were Using An AI Instead Of A Person To Take Orders (It Was Basically Like A Glorified Automated Phone Call)
My sister would hate this. She has a problem getting Alexa to understand her. She speaks well but at a lower level than most. She was in a fire and it affected her voice.
I don't have any reason for my voice being hard to pick up, but any time I have to call Centrelink (government assistance etc) their voice recognition just says 'sorry, I didn't get that'! I am a teacher and do a lot of reading/speaking at church where I'm complimented on how clear I am.
Load More Replies...If I realized that an AI was taking my order, I'd nope out of there and find a place where an actual human being would take my order.
Have you seen the video where a guy asks the Taco Bell AI ordering system for 12,000 free water cups, and he's immediately connected to a real person?
Load More Replies...Who do they think is going to come buy their s**t if no one has a job anymore, because AI took their jobs and now no one has any money?!!
Honestly, I'm so tired of getting my food wrong at fast food restaurants I'm not opposed to the food being cooked/assembled by AI. I generally push for human workers but I'm just so tired of it. It's literally every time I go. I get a sandwich with extra cheese and onions- which I pay $2 extra for, btw- and i don't get it. I worked for McDonald's for almost 10 years all through school and I know how stupid their systems are. There are no QA controls to make sure the sandwich is made right. 4 people are wearing headsets including the initiator (the person who builds the sandwich on the grill) and they still mess it up. And you get old, cold buns and meat that's been in the holding tray well over its time. It would be one thing if prices were still cheaper to offset the annoyance of not getting what you ordered but that isn't the case anymore. They've done this to themselves.
When I find myself having to speak to an AI, I suddenly develop a speech impediment.
A Fine American Education
That's how summer vacation works for us teachers. June just ended, and suddenly August is arriving.
It's birthdays, but the problem is the order.

If you go back in time you will find that Fox news stated that they are an entertainment channel and not a news channel.

I once stayed in a hotel in San Diego that had a mandatory, non-refundable $25 parking fee per night. The hotel had like 125 rooms, and only 25 parking spots on premises. We parked on the street the whole time because the garage was always full. They refused to give us a refund because they had no way to verify whether or not we parked in the garage or on the street.
back in May we went on holiday and the hotel had a very small car park. They recommended that I pay every day rather than all nights in one go. The last 2 nights I had to park in another car park which turned out to be cheaper.

We have them all over Australia- Owner Onus, don't leave valuables in cars
Load More Replies...Used to work away from home a lot, had a van full of tools that we’d lug into the hotel and out again every day, most of my tools were my own and whilst they were insured the aggravation of replacing them / missing out on work was not worth taking the risk, we had a trolley in the van for shifting tools. If we were lucky we’d get a few days at one location and space to lock them in. Humans eh? Urgh.
Living In A 3rd World Country, It's Crazy To Me That This Is Legal In The US
Oh yeah, the only time i tried to purchase something from epic, the payment went through but no game was delivered to my account. They've claimed to never have received the money despite me getting a confirmation email with an order number from them and money being taken from my credit card. Thankfully i've paid through paypal and money was back in a couple of days after making a claim. Never bought anything on epic store again.
$250,000 Porsche 911 GT3 RS With A Student Driver Sticker
Attention world: This is not an "everyday thing" in the USA. The level of wealthy that would do this is probably 0.001% of the population. I be it happens in your countries, too.
but the student driver sticker is absolutely an every day thing in the US. And it's obnoxious. Basically like "hey I know normally you're a d**k on the road but in this instance could you be less of a d**k pretty please?"
Load More Replies...Training to drive a powerful sports car is highly recommended. I'm sure many countries have stories where someone bought their dream car and then wrapped it around a tree a few days later because they couldn't handle it.
Famous in the Netherlands about 10 years ago. A guy bought a brand new Ferrari, waiting about a year before it was delivered. Picked it up at the dealership, exited the driveway, and crashed it 300m/1.000ft down the road. Totaled it.
Load More Replies...I think there are many confused europeans in the comments on this one. That sticker is not regulated in any way. You can just buy one. In this case, I'm certain it was intended as a joke.
It's either a joke or a fancy driving school. I've seen Porsches, Ferraris and Maseratis as student cars here in Europe.
doesn´t need to be a Porsche. Teslas, BMWs, Mercedes, Range Rovers, any large Pick up, all these vehicles do not belong in the hands of new drivers. They should drive, like, late 90s-early 2000s Geo Metros or unmodified Honda Civics for the first year or two.
I would love this. I would follow it around - at a prudent distance - and watch the mayhem the kid works on this plutomobile.
This could be a joke- it would be funny if that was on the back of a school bus
American Airlines Changed A Friend's Flight To Spain. The Change Added A 7-Hour Layover In Chicago And Removed Almost $100 From The Value Of The Trip. No Refund Or Voucher Was Issued To Her
Doesn't surprise me airlines would do this, regardless of country. My brother and his partner recently had flights from Noosa to Melbourne delayed and then cancelled due to weather (both on the way there and back). They had to stay in a hotel overnight when the last was cancelled and the next flight didn't leave until the day after. The only compensation from the airline was a $25 voucher to a local restaurant where that amount wouldn't even cover the full cost of the cheapest meal.
Yikes
I'm just going to say this; we need to let it go. 9-11-2001 was TWENTY-THREE years ago now. There are people that have been legally able to vote for five years that have never known a pre-9/11 world. That is an entire generation. I am NOT advocating that we forget the past; the past is important. Memory and reverence are important. But wallowing in the past won't help anyone. We have got to move forward.
My Psych Ward Shower Drain Says Fiat. You Can't Escape Advertising

Carl Roberts apparently thinks voting for the "cackling idiot" appointed without a primary vote is somehow worse than voting for the orange, cackling, narcissistic, lying, convicted felon who his party ACTUALLY VOTED FOR. True patriotism is not "My country, right or wrong." True patriotism is being willing to criticize what is wrong with your country and taking what measures you can to improve it: petitions, voting, peaceful demonstrations, etc.
