On top of this, they have truly become successful at being able to do things quickly, especially when it comes to food. There are many fast food places in the States that come with drive-thru features. But that’s not simply it.

There are even drive-thru pharmacies, banks, and coffee shops. In other countries like Spain, people usually enjoy sit-down meals with friends and family. To these people, the concept of taking a cup of coffee through the window is quite alien.

While tipping is a common practice in many countries, it is practically a requirement in the States. And no, you can't skimp on tips—15-20% is the expected norm at restaurants.

On the contrary, in countries like Japan, there is an actual cultural principle not to tip anyone, and a good number of European nations include the gratuity within the bill itself.

Medical bills in the US can be shockingly high compared to countries with universal healthcare, like Canada or the UK. In those places, most people do not have to pay for doctor’s visits, surgeries and staying in the hospital, because this is financed by the state. Here, on the other hand, a simple visit to an emergency department could lead to a bill that runs into hundreds of thousands of dollars.

It's not always the company's fault. Years ago I worked for a baseball stadium. We used to donate all food leftover after games to a local shelter. Then someone took the food to go and ate it like a week later and sued the stadium food provider for food poisoning and won. So they quit donating food.

To be clear, if food is donated in good faith, recipients cannot sue if they get sick/have allergic reactions/etc. Regardless, all across the US and Canada, good food like this is thrown out because uninformed people say "We can't give it away for legal reasons." Yes, you can give it away, yes you can help. You're just choosing not to.

Anyone who says it's a liability doesnt know the law. The US has a Good Samaritan law that protects individuals and businesses. It provides immunity from prosecution should someone get sick...any company, store or individual who says they throw away food rather than donate it because they don't want to be sued are lying. Period.

That's ridiculous, there's a food pantry in town and the grocery stores like Food Lion literally right down the road from it donates bread, cakes, pastries, etc that's getting ready to expire. The bread store that I go to gives expired bread to pig farmers or they did several years ago. Gonna try to remember to ask when I go this week. I thought it was terrible because the homeless shelters could have used it. I know that the color of the tie on the bag is for each day of the week.

I am guessing they are doing it due to taxes. Around 15-20y ago there as something like this in PL. Somebody wanted to show how cool some bakery is by showing in the Internet they are giving unsold bread to homeless. Tax agency showed up, give GIANT fee for not putting this in income and I am not sure but I think it almost put owner in prison.

When my daughter was in high school a bunch of kids had part time jobs involving food. They started taking all the day olds that would have been tossed and making sandwichs that they would distribute to the street people in the park near their school on their lunch break. Their teachers liked the fact that they had organized this themselves and decided to give them all credit for community service. Many times companies would do the right thing if they have someone who is willing to physically take responsibility for doing it.

In my country (EU country) stores after working hours (especially before they close for weekend or holidays) prepare all leftover food - that can't wait few days (baked goods, dairy products before expiration, sliced salami or cheese) and they have special companies pick the food up and give it to people that can not afford to buy them.

It has to do more with government regulations, and what they are allowed to donate, rather than if the company wants to donate, a lot of the time. The laws vary state to state. For instance, in South Carolina, pretty much anything goes, even already cooked pizzas can be donated. Idaho, takes pre-made sandwiches and salads from gas stations. Massachusetts, can't take either of those, but can take bakery items. When I worked at a 7-Eleven, in Mass, the owner would let us take home the sandwiches, and put the extras in a strategically placed bag for the hungry. Some jerk ratted him out, and he had to pay huge fines.

Every once in a while I see these types of posts and it bothers me because there are real reasons not to give away food. Giving away food opens your company up to lawsuits by anyone claiming to be sick from the food you give away. You also create a culture of theft by people knowing they can have what isn't sold, so they make more purposely. And you could end up with people--people who statistically already have some form of mental illnesses- getting angry if you aren't able to give them anything that day. We had a homeless guy come around every night to take any extra muffins or bagels we had and one day it just turned out we sold everything and he got super violent and broke our window. So I get it. But this is a waste problem. You need to control your waste a lot better if you're throwing away this much food. You have to be okay with maybe not making a sale because you ran out. It's a waste of product and labor.

Not to one-up..but went to an urgent care that I had visited before for a Upper Resp infection. Got a bill for the whole amount, when my BC/BS should have paid 80%. Upon investigation it was reclassified by the conglomerate as a Ready Care, or, an offsite ER. Oh...the hospital ER is 4 blocks away. I refused to pay any more than my 20% co-pay due to their "subterfuge". They threatened credit reporting after a few months. Called my (GOP) Rep. and explained the situation. I sent them 20% right after my call to my Rep. Got an e-mail from McClaren telling me it was paid in full.

Came For Boxer Briefs. Everything Is Locked Up. I Had To Track Someone Down Just To Get These Unlocked

Came For Boxer Briefs. Everything Is Locked Up. I Had To Track Someone Down Just To Get These Unlocked

I pointed at a 10-pack and said “The 10-pack in medium” and they grabbed a 6-pack… Of course, I didn't check (which adds to my mild infuriation) just because I thought they saw and heard. They were both the same price so it only made sense. Didn't realize until I got home. Thought it was fine cause I had to get tums, to find the same thing… And find another associate. Finding someone took about 5 minutes. The funny thing is they just hand it over right after and let you take it to the front.

Note that she had way more items than you should for self-checkout, and a recommendation was made by the employee that she consider going to the standard checkout, which had nobody in line, and she refused.
