Life before the digital age has become a distant memory for many who lived it. Thankfully, we have photographs to remind us about those simpler times.
Today, we’re not just doing any other throwback. We’re winding back the clock to the 1890s to give us a glimpse of how massively different things were. These antique snapshots are from a Facebook group aptly named “Photographic Traces from 1890 until 1950.”
If the group name isn’t enough of a giveaway, expect to see historic pictures of a tattoo parlor in the 1930s, a dance class in the 1900s, and a rare image of the ever-stunning Marilyn Monroe in a potato sack dress from the early ‘50s.
Enjoy scrolling, as these vintage photos may also enthrall you.

Angela Lansbury ('princess Gwendolyn' And Her Hamburger....) Eating With Basil Rathbone ('sir Ravenhurst')
From The Court Jester (1955) starring Danny Kaye. A hilarious movie.
Yeah, I once lived in the same town as her. It was horrible. A murder every week, like clockwork.
Try living in Midsomer in the UK, higher death rate than anywhere else 😂
Load More Replies...This is from the Danny Kaye film, The Court Jester (1955). One can surmise it's American because "Sir" should be followed by a first name, eg Sir John of Ravenhurst (although a similar error is made in For Your Eyes Only where they refer to Sir Havelock rather than Sir Timothy)..
Just following the cast names (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0049096/). A whole bunch of Sirs with no first names.

1942 - Navajo Mother, Rose, And Her Son Ben Chee Henry, Canyon De Chelly, Arizona
I love learning about and watching other cultures. Native Americans from the time America was colonized through the 1950's is my favorite subject and era. I wish they were treated more kindly so that so many groups weren't wiped off the map and we could learn from them instead of speculating what they must have been like based on so few facts.
It looks like what would function as a sun hat with adjustable shading screen/windbreak.

Nostalgia is a powerful emotion. Everyone enjoys a trip down memory lane, even if that journey goes back to a century ago. It’s also why the vintage aesthetic is a popular photography trend, so much so that digital cameras have retro filters.
According to wedding photographer Lena Christine, the use of vintage and film “taps into our yearning for the good old times.”
“The grainy texture, muted tones, and soft focus of images invite us into the past the way we experience an old family album,” she wrote in an article for her website.
On Easter Morning In 1941, A Group Of African American Boys Dressed In Their Finest Clothes Gathered On The South Side Of Chicago, Posing Atop A Parked Car
So tired of seeing this gorgeous picture butchered on social media I now keep my own copy to share. The full picture and name: Negro boys on Easter morning. Southside, Chicago, Illinois, by Russell Lee, 1941. You're welcome! Negro-boys...3-jpeg.jpg
LOL, thank you! I actually guessed that they were either going to, or coming back from church. As at that time, you wouldn't "wear your best" unless it was for church, a funeral, or wedding.

A Reflection Of Notre Dame Cathedral And A Sitting Dog Photographed In 1958 By Inge Morath In Paris, France
Gorgeous, but I don't that's Notre Dame. Or is it an odd angle?
Its not a reflection either. its a model in the window.

For some reason, details seem to blend in color. Or maybe it's just me
Load More Replies...Checking out the photographer, Inge Morath, one thing led to another, and I ended up on a road trip from New York to Reno (she was on assignment to photograph Marilyn Monroe's last movie, The Misfits, filming in Reno). Vintage photography can also be an excellent storytelling tool, which is why Lena uses it for engagement photo shoots. As she explains, the intention is to “create a timeless narrative” and transport the couple back into the moment for each photograph.
“Film aesthetic invites us to slow down, to appreciate simplicity, and to connect with the human experiences that lie within each frame,” she wrote.

1890s - Tibetan Lady Ani Chokyi By Photographer Thomas Parr, Darjeeling, India (Albumen Print)
Well, if folks had to pay $$ to have actual film processed and printed like we did in "the olden days" there would be far, far fewer of them around.
Load More Replies...You don’t need to be a seasoned photographer to take awe-inspiring vintage photographs. However, you will need vintage equipment to capture the authenticity.
According to photographer Jennifer Froula Weber, one way to do so is by using point-and-shoot cameras that predate the 1950s. Expired film from decades ago is another great option.
Unknown Photographer. School Teacher At Her Desk 1899. Cyanotype
Imagine what it would take for a cheeky kid to take a candid of the teacher in those days!
I absolutely HAD TO zoom in on that chalkboard. What an incredible photo. 💙
At some point my classroom slate boards were replaced with white boards. I missed the chalk board so much.
This really demonstrates the old photo exposure times. Old photos took several minutes to capture a scene, sometimes as much as a half hour, though as short as fifteen minutes if you were lucky. Since you can see that the teacher's head is blurry, you can tell that she kept moving during the shot.
Thing is, by 1899, photography was highly developed from the first long exposure technologies (1820s-1830s). In 1878, Muybridge had captured the motion of a horse using photography - exposure times of well under a second. People were paying to see "movies" in 1895. 1899 exposure times could be very short if the light was good enough. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film#Before_celluloid. The Cyanotype process is explained here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyanotype. It seems likely to me that the picture in question is a print made using the Cyanotype process from a "conventional" negative.

But of course, we now have technology at our disposal to manipulate images and make them look a certain way. However, overdoing it may ruin the aesthetic you’re looking for.
Photographer Paige Mercer advises sticking to minor adjustments, such as adding a hint of warmth or lowering the dark spots. You can also increase exposure by a small notch to achieve a rustic look with lens flares and light leaks.

It always amazes me how pointe shoes have evolved over time. Notice how tiny that platform (the part of the box the dancer's toes stand on) is and how narrow the box (the part of the shoe that holds the toes and metatarsals) is. The vamp (top part of the box) is very low. Interestingly, the ribbons are tied up just like how they are supposed be today.

The photographer, Lewis Hine, notes this as being "Italian immigrant from Albania". Which unfortunately, if that's accurate... would not bode well for her entry into the US. The issue at hand, is one of the factors which could get someone turned back, was if the person in question were deemed "to have a likelihood to become a public charge." Basically, unaccompanied women or minors. Keep in mind, things like "Social security", "medicaid", and "Medicare" didn't exist in this time; and "poor houses" were still a common thing. So, if she's there by herself, there is a strong chance that her look is a resigned reservation accepting that she's being sent back to port of origin, and being denied entry.
