Postmortem portraits, ghost photographs, and images of disfigured soldiers are just a few examples of photography from the past that might seem unsettling to modern viewers. The grainy and black-and-white aesthetic combined with the open acknowledgment of death and fascination with the supernatural world has produced many photos that now give off an eerie and disturbing feel.
For those who find this intriguing, we have a whole list of pictures from the past that are truly unsettling. Collected by the Old School Creepy subreddit, these images invite you to embark on a darker journey through history.
While you're scrolling through, don't forget to check out a conversation with moderators of this subreddit, nicknamed Seryan_Klythe and TheOddityCollector, who kindly agreed to chat with us more about old and unsettling photos.

Why is this supposed to be creepy? Just looks like three kids playing or talking.
If you watch the movie, it will be obvious why it's creepy.

The ghost dance has a very interesting background. It actually led to the m******e at Wounded Knee in 1890. Very sad history.
Question, is that censored word m a s s a c r e? if so, BP's censoring is getting really out of hand.
Load More Replies...Edward Curtis’ work is so underappreciated. If you’re looking for a good read, I recommend Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher.
I've seen these ceremonies before. Intense to see at night when they dance around a bonfire. It was a ceremony for a young woman who goes into adulthood. The " Crowns" atop the head are now larger and more colorful.
Interested to know if the crosses were Christian iconography or coincidental to native mythology?
That's what I was wondering. Was the cross symbol already part of the culture or was it incorporated later, as it was incorporated into Christianity earlier?
Load More Replies...I don't mean to be a downer, but this is beautiful and sad. Misunderstood and annihilated culture is definitely "unsettling", but this seems depicted as frightening.
Crosses were symbols for societies centuries before Christianity adopted it as its central symbol. After all, Rome used it for execu+ion before Christ. Cultures that didn't have an association with Christianity adopted the symbol after Christ's execu+ion centuries later. For example, a number of first nations used what would become the N@zi symbol. Some have made a little tweak to make it near the same but not actually it. Some don't bow to pressure because another group for a short time (as in centuries, not a decade) for evil purposes. Why should they be robbed of a symbol that was theirs long before? So we can't just laugh and say, that religion/culture/sociery would never use that symbol.

Bored Panda was lucky enough to get in touch with its moderators, who kindly agreed to tell us more about it.
"The subreddit was created for people who enjoy the eerie feeling of old photos. Unlike modern horror, old pictures can be creepy in a more subtle way—through strange expressions, outdated fashion, or imperfections in the photo itself," told us moderator TheOddityCollector.

Is this where Stephen King got the idea for the twins in The Shining?
Its other moderator, nicknamed Seryan_Klythe, said that what fascinates them about disturbing vintage images the most is the fact that they were taken in the time of pre-technological standards and bare-bones inventions. "The world was different and saw things differently too. The fascination is part of understanding what was creepy to someone then was simplistic and played more with their blunt fascination to take things at face value or without the use of high-sophistication gimmickry."
A Boy On Krampus Shoulders During A Parade, Mitterndorf, Austria, 6th Of Dec 1949
Honestly, this is pretty cute regardless of the fact that Krampus is the one who tortures naughty children. Look how happy that kid is! Krampus is clearly someone the kid is comfortable being around like his father or a relative.
When i was young parents could "book" nikolaus and krampus. They could choose if they wanted a wild krampus or the nice one entering our house. Maybe the krampus in the picture was a nice one. Nowadays Nikolaus is driving around alone i think. Parents don't want to scare their young children anymore. Krampusse are still there at "Krampuslauf" - a party on the streets for teens and young adults...
Load More Replies...Probably Dad under the mask. Or another close relative. My eldest son has a krampus costume too ( it's called Perchtenlauf here and my son is member of a Perchten club) and his siblings love this tradition and the costumes , as they are used to it, while neighbor kids use to run away screaming when they see him fully dressed in his costume.
Say what you will about Krampus, but he’s always known to be the life of the party.

I see them on news conferences sometimes. Very entertaining.
Load More Replies...Indeed, when people were taking postmortem photos with their loved ones, they weren't thinking that they were doing something morbid—they were just trying to capture a simple photo they could remember them by in the future.
When postmortem photography was popular, deaths were a frequent occurrence, which meant that many people, especially children, didn't have a photo taken of them while they were alive. So their relatives would usually take one after their passing.

Having a trinket of a deceased loved one definitely wasn't a new thing by then. People would cut locks of hair from the dead and put them into lockets and rings or create death masks from wax. However, attitudes towards them and post-mortem photography have changed as our view of death has evolved.
Our comfort with corpses decreased as the funeral industry appeared, the government removed post-mortem care from family members, and hygiene and modern medicine helped people live longer.

What fascinates moderator Oddity Collector the most about old unsettling pictures is that they are able to show us a world that’s familiar but different. Load More Replies...We just let them wander the streets and destroy themselves - far better, right?
Perhaps it is better to let them wander than to t*****e them, as long as they are not hurting others. First of all, if you put a sane person in those old places, they go crazy. So, obviously it's inhumane treatment and ineffective. Secondly, better to live a shorter, happier life than to lead a long, miserable life.
Load More Replies...A lot of the times, they weren't even mentally ill. Suffering from trauma, autistic, maltreated, sexually promiscuous (or thought to be), or disliked by their family could land them in a mental institution. So, they treat them in a way that actually would cause a sane person to go crazy. I don't know about this particular person. If they are actually dangerous, then you have to do SOMETHING, but given that she looks to weigh 92 pounds, this does seem excessive.
If they are dangerous, this is the only way. Many were there for the wrong reasons, but a person who is going through a psychotic episodes are sometimes unbelievably strong.

You beat me to it. Regarding its title I don't see anything tempting in that pic at all!
Load More Replies...Anthony is the man sitting under the tree. The lady beside him is there to tempt him. (She's lowering her blouse and has alcohol for him). The snakes and crabs are coming out of the eggs, indicating the torment from the devil and the lack of food. The big head represents Anthony's younger self and all the things he has given up. (painting, farming, and items deemed as luxuries. The head looks shocked as demons enter his mouth and work their sinful ways into his thoughts. A clever personification of the memories of sin and temptation.
Is St. Anthony the elder man with a white beard by the tree with a book in his lap?
Someone up above stated that it is him under the tree.

This was a case that necessitated a law. Previously, judges only had to sign off on marriages. In this case, the judge was tricked into thinking the girl was much, much older. But the fact that the deception was uncovered didn't nullify the marriage.

Very misleading. There are four states where it's up to a judge to decide if someone is too young to get married. In three of them, there have been no "child brides" in ages. The exception is California, where there have been recent cases of judges respecting "foreign customs" to permit child brides.

A Young Woman Writing A Thank You Note To Her Boyfriend In The Navy For The Skull Of A Japanese Soldier That He Sent, 1944
Maybe I’m projecting but she doesn’t look too thrilled about the “gift”
Wouldn't this be classed as a war trophy? Bringing an enemy flag or piece of equipment home is one thing, but a skull was probably crossing the line with regards to 'spoils of war'...even by WW2 standards (for Allied forces, anyway).
My dad fought in the Pacific theater in WWII. He brought back a packet of photos that showed piles of dead Japanese soldiers and one that I remember was of an American soldier holding up the severed head of a Japanese soldier. I asked him why he had these disgusting photos, and he said they were widely distributed to all of the soldiers as some kind of bizarre "morale booster" to show that we were winning the war. I seem to recall it being either a public "humiliation" style punishment for drunkards (having to wear the barrel while in public) but I also recall cartoons where a character lost their clothing (for whatever reason) and had to "wear" a barrel to hide the fact that they were naked. But I think the true origin was similar to the "stocks" - a public humiliation punishment.
