Keeps the blood supply going while they wait for the arm to heal enough to be able to have the hand reattached. They were doing this with flesh grafts, aka pedicles, as long ago as the second world war, when it was developed to help burn victims.

I once worked in health care. Went to place a catheter and found a nub. His penis was stitched to his abdomen to keep it alive while repairing the rest. He said he was cutting wood with a circular saw and it jumped. And zip it was off he said.

Seeing that it was just Halloween, we were curious to discover if we were more inclined to be frightened at certain times of the year.

Too many people die horribly this way in the South Texas heat. Many are tragically abandoned inside their transport vehicles while their smugglers flee.

I used to live in South Texas, and I remember back in the 1980s so many times they'd find box-cars in the rail yard, abandoned with no paperwork, filled with bodies of people who'd died from heat. The people would pay the smugglers, get on the train, with promises someone would let them out on the other side, but there was no one waiting. When it reached the train yard, with no tags or paperwork, it would be disconnected, the people at the time probably staying quiet so they wouldn't be caught. Later, no one would be close enough to hear them, and they'd die in the heat. Even all these years later, my heart breaks for those people.

Your comments remind me of a book we had to read in school. I don‘t remember what grade, but it was before 9th, so I must have been below age 15. „Das Schiff Esperanza“ by Fred von Hoerschelmann. I think we‘ve read it as part of WWII history class. A tavern keeper helped people escape Germany via ship. Everyone of them promised to write to her, but no one ever did. What no one of them knew (not even the tavern keeper) was, that the illegal passengers were dumped somewhere in the Atlantic ocean at night. They were told to swim in a certain direction to reach New York, but of course they were no where near that city. They all died in the ocean. As you can see, it left quite an impression on me. It was haunting and I‘ve never forgotten it in the 20 years since. There is a second storyline it it but I don‘t want to spoiler it in case someone wants to read this book.

Some mummies from South America died and then were tied/propped up into a sitting position like this: note that the hands are tied together. The mouth probably fell open after death. This does not necessarily indicate that this was the position this person actually died in.

The earth isn’t solid dirt or rock. It’s incredibly diverse below the surface. There could be ancient underground caves/caverns under the area, and the extra weight of human buildings caused the collapse. Or water seepage from and underground water table could have caused the surface to weaken and then eventually collapse. There are many things that cause sinkholes, unfortunately.

Yep. Gases accumulate within the body. If the gases are not adequately released, they can cause the carcass to bloat, increasing the internal pressure. Eventually, the pressure can become so great that the whale's body explodes. It's rare but it does happen.

probably not - the feet would have to be rebroken and at the time this was popular, i don't believe we had the medical knowledge to fix it - i am not sure if this practice went into the 20th century (assuming so by the pictures) or how far into it it went.

Also I just read about it, and the process of breaking the feet and binding them started between the ages of 3-5 yrs old since the feet contained more cartilage rather than all bone. It would be done in the winter so the cold could help numb the excruciating pain. Although I can't imagine it would help much.

That was almost me at the leaning tower of Pisa. The bells don't swing, but were/are rung with striker mechanisms. I was leaning on the rail on the low side, did not know it was the quarter hour, and the bell went off behind me, and it was almost me emulating Galileo's experiment. I jerked upward, but hung onto the railing, and thank you Lord, it was sturdy.

If the roof space is vented, then air going through the roof space can be at a lower pressure than that in the garage space causing it to lift. Mine used to make a bit of a noise sometimes. Since wrapping it in vinyl (rather than painting it), it seems to stay put, as it is a bit more of a snug fit.

Disturbing, but seems most likely caused by a wind gust causing a suction / updraft. Air pulled out of the attic vents, creates a vacuum and air tries to rush in via the access hole.

Wikipedia: Although their union was an arranged political marriage, and in spite of the age difference, Isabella and Richard developed a mutually respectful relationship. Due to the age of Isabella (the Canonical law for sexual consummation being twelve), the marriage was never sexually consummated. However, Isabella and Richard enjoyed a good platonic relationship, which has been compared to that between a father and his adopted daughter or between a niece and a doting uncle, and he was noted to have treated her not as a wife but rather as the daughter he and his first wife Anne never had. The king regularly visited her in Windsor, where he treated her with respect and entertained her and her ladies-in-waiting with humorous conversation, and pampered her with gifts and toys. Isabella reportedly enjoyed and looked forward to these visits

I am going to get downvoted for this i know - but the ONLY reason the marriage was not consummated is cause he died when she was TEN, not TWELVE like she had to be during that time. If he had lived, the marriage would have most likely been consummated WITH WITNESSES TO IT - or it would have been invalidated - the purpose of this marriage was to form a truce with a warring nation without subjugating himself to the king of that nation. Producing an heir would have been PARAMOUNT to an on going truce. History is just as ugly as the present.

Almost certainly regarding Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC). Some of the UK hospitals (and schools) were built of substandard concrete which has biodegraded and may collapse.....but they still have to use them till the new ones get built. There are several hospitals that are currently being held up with props floor to ceiling.

Even if that isn't the case, reporting something out of the ordinary is the best way to catch a problem before it becomes severe. As an example, I used to do maintenance for a rental property. The tennants called and said that the sump pump hadn't stopped running for a week (a bloody week!!) and maybe I should look at it? They called back an hour later to tell me "never mind, it stopped." No, it stopping is potentially a much bigger problem!

Yeah, we put them around buildings under construction. Usually for catching tools or small parts that are kicked or blown off a building. However, I imagine they aren't the same strength as ones meant to catch s falling human, and temp railings or human tie off is required to be within I think 10' of an uncontrolled edge on a slab or roof of a building.

What is scariest is we keep getting warnings about tipping points, or points of no return. What should really be alarming is not just the upward trend but the sudden and stark deviation this year. That's well outside normal distribution and if we aren't extremely lucky and it is an outlier we haven't encountered in the last 50 years then.... ooh boy could we be in trouble.

I was able to hike and see the volcano in Iceland. Completely breathtaking. We were far enough to not be hit, but close enough to hear the roar. This was my last night there and first time in a week that it was producing more than just smoke.

That happened in the case of the "Yorkshire Ripper." Peter Sutcliffe murdered loads of women in Yorkshire, England. He was pulled in for questioning several times, but someone with a Newcastle/North East accent phoned the police/sent them tapes several times, claiming he was the Ripper, so the police spent far too long tracing that false lead while other women were being murdered by the real Ripper. They found the imposter years later and he was arrested, but with him trolling the police, that meant other women died.

I hope the police were notified, just in case any crime scene is missing its weapon? Or any future crime scene had been discovered? Or was this after Halloween? I only ask because I can imagine kids leaving/dropping costume parts along the path to candy. Even when borrowing part of dad's real sword collection without permission...

There are no "abandoned" Tori gates. Torii are erected to indicate that you are entering sacred space. They can be found in many places that inspire awe, or a sense of reverence. The location of a Tori may not be well traveled .

If it's a partial blockage you might be able to do that, but for a complete blockage, you may have to get it out yourself. If the person is conscious you start with the Heimlich and patting their back. If they are unconscious one of the first things to do is to look and feel deep in their throat and mouth for the blockage, sort of like pictured above.

here you go: "Hairy tongue is a harmless condition that causes the tongue’s texture and appearance to change. It occurs because of a buildup of keratin cells, which are the proteins that also make up human hair. This buildup can give the tongue a rough, hairy texture. This rough surface also provides an excellent area for bacteria and fungi to multiply, which could also cause a green tongue. Hairy tongue is more common in older people than other people, though it can occur at any age. Hairy tongue may cause other symptoms, including: an odd taste on the tongue; a tickling or gagging sensation that may get worse when swallowing; bad breath; difficulty tasting food or changes in the taste buds. Factors that contribute to hair tongue include poor oral hygiene, the use of certain medications, such as antibiotics, or tobacco and caffeine." (source: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321481#:~:text=It%20occurs%20because%20of%20a,also%20cause%20a%20green%20tongue.)

I had that once, too, around 10-15 years ago. I'm 99% certain that mine was caused by some chewable Pepto Bismol that I had used before I went to bed the previous night (after I had already brushed my teeth). According to google: "Temporary “pseudo–black hairy tongue” can occur in patients who have used bismuth subsalicylate to treat upset stomach because the bismuth in such preparations can react with traces of sulfur in the saliva to produce bismuth sulfide."

Hairy tongue occurs when a certain type of cell on the tongue doesn’t shed as it should. This gives the tongue a rough or “hairy” appearance. This rough surface creates a place for bacteria and yeast to thrive. This can discolor your tongue, causing a green hue. A color change is even more common after eating certain types of foods or drinks, or using certain products

Kinda makes sense, as I know that some stores allow you to return mattresses after a couple of weeks, if you don’t find them comfortable. (And I personally know someone who has actually returned one after sleeping on it for a few nights - it would never have occurred to me that anyone actually does it otherwise). I’ve always wondered what happens to them.

My husband had a seizure and fell on the corner of a metal pallet. The area adjacent to the fracture, which was the temple area started to look like this. It was because the blood was leaking from the fracture and collecting in the area between skin and bone. He was not all smiles either. In fact, had he waited like he wanted to, he would have been a corpse. Hope that young man's injury was quickly remedied and that his recovery was swift and the last pain possible

We buried tons of highly radioactive debris under this 300 plus feet dome that is 18 in thick. Many of us who had to serve there are dying/died of numerous cancers, skin and bone disorders, breathing issues etc. With around 7000 who were there.. we are down to only hundreds left . This based on a war time army recruitment poster. In the original the father is not injured. It was supposed to make men feel guilty about not signing up because they would be ashamed to tell their children they did nothing in the war. I assume this version has been produced as a modern day protest or ironic artwork.

He was burned, lost parts of 4 limbs and spent hours with surgery and rehab. So much to happen to one person. I hope the poster is showing someone who is back with his family and going on with his life. I wish humanity could cease all wars somehow. I don't understand the types of hatred that lead to this.

Honestly? Not really. Pet carriers occasionally have to go through them if the animal isn't properly restrained. A spin through one exposes someone to 200 microsieverts. One chest xray is 100 microsieverts. Not ideal at all, but it won't harm the baby that much. That's the equivalent of 20 days of normal background radiation.

    Jon Steensen

I seriously doubt that! Such a big block of metal would be REALLY heavy, and sending it to space would cost a fortune (...or actually more than that as sending anything into space is really expensive). So anything that was designed for use in space would be constructed differently to save on the weight. If the purpose is armouring the station/space ship or probe, there are more efficient ways to deal with absorbing the energy of an impact. The usual fashion consist of several layers of materials, which will distribute the load.

Not in space but in a facility on the ground most likely. That speed (~7.2 km/s) is about or a little less than orbital velocity at ISS altitude. (7.68 km/s) so like the speed if the ISS were hit perpendicular to it's direction. If it was coming the opposite direction. the damage would be considerably worse (relative velocity ~15 km/s and energy is 1/2 mv^2). What does all that mean? The little stuff up there can do a LOT of damage, stuff you can't track or see. (Note also, since there's no banana for scale, this is probably not as big as it look here)

That's NOT the size of the collapsed star, that's the (much larger) size of it's event horizon, where light cannot escape.

It is not known whether supermassive black holes are even collapsed stars. It could be first generation stars that potentially were very large. And possibly ones that gobbled up a lot of gas and grew after they became black holes, but we really don't know how they were formed. Black holes are very simple in their buildup, they are just mass, electric charge and spin, just like fundamental particles in fact. So it is fine to call an event horizon the black hole, a lot of astronomers do, since it is the only way they act on our side of spacetime. We don't have any physical access to their insides so they are literally just an event horizon and Hawking radiation to us.

Supermassive black holes (typically found in a galactic center) are the result of black holes merging together. The theoretical mass limit for a stable star continues to be debated, but it is almost certainly below 300 solar masses. Therefore, any black hole over 300 solar masses has either grown through ingesting normal matter or merging with another black hole.

Yeah it's satire. I had a few baby turtles when my boys were kids. They were very careful to wash their hands before and after doing anything to the tank and a few had funny personalities- like, one would see us and race to the edge with it's head wayyy far out to get a little head pat and one would make cute faces when you rub their backs and bellies. But, their cousin came over one day and even though I told her multiple times to NOT touch them, she did anyway and they died. She had open sores on her arms (her parents were not exactly involved with her. at all). We all cried about it and my ex in laws kept saying "they're JUST turtles, you're gonna make the boys into sissys!". I'm STILL pissed about it

California has stricter labeling laws than the rest of the US. Almost everything has this label on it. It feels meaningless. If there is a danger, it's impossible to get more information.

Not all sharks are endangered, but they are protected under NOAA. You can only retain (catch) certain species, and there's minimum length requirements as well. Atlantic Smoothhound is the only thing with no size or retention limit, and you don't need a commercial permit for them. https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/topic/atlantic-highly-migratory-species (edit to add link)
