Bored Panda got in touch with Frank T. McAndrew, Ph.D., a psychologist, professor, and essayist to learn more about why certain things fascinate and scare us at the same time. Seeing that it was just Halloween, we were curious to discover if we were more inclined to be frightened at certain times of the year.
“At Halloween, we are continually reminded by the decorations on houses and in stores as well as by the movies that are featured to think about spooky things. So yes, at this time of year the morbid and the creepy is in our thoughts more than at other times of year,” he shared with Bored Panda

Some people actively enjoy seeking out the morbid and spooky and seem to like the emotions associated with it, so we wanted to know what is the psychology behind that. “We are drawn to things that scare us (as long as we know they are not "real") because we can learn from them,” Frank T. McAndrew shared.

“We can mentally rehearse strategies for dealing with possible future encounters with terrifying people and places, and we also learn some things about ourselves. What scares us the most? What are we prepared to deal with and what will simply be too much for us?” In a sense, just clicking on this article could have been your way of answering these questions.

Lastly, Frank T. Bored Panda also got in touch with Coltan Scrivner, a behavioral scientist and expert on the morbid. We asked if Halloween in particular can cause some people to be more interested in this content. "People feel like it's less taboo or weird to be interested in creepy things around Halloween, so you see a lot more people acting on that interest around this time of year."

At the same time, we also wanted to know why some folks are so attracted to the morbid and seek it out. "Some people seek out experiences that make them feel scared because they enjoy the adrenaline rush," he shared with Bored Panda.

"Others enjoy the feeling of overcoming their fears when they experience safe instances of fear, like a horror movie or haunted house attraction. Some people even enjoy scary experiences because those experiences actually help them overcome the anxiety they may be facing." You can find more of Coltan Scrivner's work on his blog.

Rare Case Of Green Hairy Tongue Is Pure Nightmare Fuel
I was going to ask a question, and then I realised I actually didn't want to know any answers related to this.
Mine turned black once. It was the morning after I took Pepto bismol. Some weird reaction. It happens.
Load More Replies...Gross. This is why you should brush your tongue when you brush your teeth.
My dentist gave me a tongue scraper decades ago. If I don't use it, my mouth never feels clean enough, even if I brush it.
Load More Replies...here you go: "Hairy tongue is a harmless condition that causes the tongue’s texture and appearance to change. It occurs because of a buildup of keratin cells, which are the proteins that also make up human hair. This buildup can give the tongue a rough, hairy texture. This rough surface also provides an excellent area for bacteria and fungi to multiply, which could also cause a green tongue. Hairy tongue is more common in older people than other people, though it can occur at any age. Hairy tongue may cause other symptoms, including: an odd taste on the tongue; a tickling or gagging sensation that may get worse when swallowing; bad breath; difficulty tasting food or changes in the taste buds. Factors that contribute to hair tongue include poor oral hygiene, the use of certain medications, such as antibiotics, or tobacco and caffeine." I had that once, too, around 10-15 years ago. I'm 99% certain that mine was caused by some chewable Pepto Bismol that I had used before I went to bed the previous night (after I had already brushed my teeth). According to google: "Temporary “pseudo–black hairy tongue” can occur in patients who have used bismuth subsalicylate to treat upset stomach because the bismuth in such preparations can react with traces of sulfur in the saliva to produce bismuth sulfide."
Load More Replies...Hairy tongue occurs when a certain type of cell on the tongue doesn’t shed as it should. This gives the tongue a rough or “hairy” appearance. This rough surface creates a place for bacteria and yeast to thrive. This can discolor your tongue, causing a green hue. A color change is even more common after eating certain types of foods or drinks, or using certain products
So, honest question, even a mild tongue scraper wouldn't be of benefit? Have we tried?

*Mostly* poor oral hygiene and/or smoking. The normal skin of the tongue is not shedding as it should.
