Madeline L'Engle wrote some amazing books in the Wrinkle in Time series. She also wrote time travel mysteries which included an exploration of the history of Christian religion in a way that was not preachy, which I found very interesting when I was growing up. And I'm about as irreligious a person as there is, so that should tell you something.

I will always recommend Terry Pratchett to anyone and everyone. Been a huge fan of his work for about twenty years now.

Miss peregrine's home for peculiar children is a great book series

idk if this is really YA, but it treats the reader like a kid, and not in the patronizing way: the mysterious benedict society, and the extraordinary education of nicholas benedict

Tamora Pierce! I accidentally started with the wild magic series, which was not exactly in chronological order, but it didn’t really matter. Each set of her books is outstanding

The ‘Mortal Instruments’ series by Cassandra Clare and the ‘Ranger’s Apprentice’ series by John Flannagan. Plus, both series have a ton of spin-off series that are really good! Also the throne of glass

Wings of Fire, period.

Anything by Tamora Pierce, Hilari Bell, or Robin McKinley is usually pretty good and very rarely has depressing endings (none with depressing endings come to mind)

The Vampire Academy series. I read it once expecting to fully hate it and now it's my favorite series, along with the sequel series. The author has the shockingly rare ability to genuinely have characters grow within a great plot.

I don't know if you'll like this but I enjoyed the whole series: "Brimstone Witch Mysteries - Books 1 to 13 by April Fernsby. " Murder mysteries but with fairies and unicorns and witches and talking cats. I was enamored.

Ranger's Apprentice series and Razorland series (though I'm not sure if they're YA or kids)

Just about anything from Brandon Sanderson. I recommend the Alcatraz Smedry series of books, or, for something a little edgier (and longer), The Way of Kings series

The Outrage, it's only a couple of years old, but it is very gripping.

If you like Jane Austen, you should absolutely read Maria Edgeworths stories and novellas. The Parents Assistant is her most famous one. She was a contemporary of Jane Austen, and an educator who believed stories should be interesting to children so they could learn. The stories are old fashioned but very easy to read and charming. You can buy the complete set of her writings on Amazon in one download pretty cheaply.

Have you tried The Chicagoland Vampires series by Chloe Neill? I think there is like 12 or 13 books in the main series then I think 4 more in a spin off series and a few extra stories included. I read them as a teenager but they are definitely more for older teens or twenty-somethings.

okay, not everyone's stle and perhaps more teens but perfectly preventable deaths and precious catastrophe. (they're a set) Trust me, they seem sad at the end but everything works out perfectly. I LOVE them

Shadowhunters! It's amazing, very detailed and beautifully written. And even though it's technically a kids' book if you haven't read the Narnia books go for it. Absolutely amazing. Also I'm surprised and happy at the amount of responses it makes me glad that there are so many people who love to read!

The Stephanie plum series is great fun! And there's tons of them. First is "One for the Money."

Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer. romance, fantasy, sci-fi, humor, and happily ever after. plus some really hot guys and girls

Mercedes Lackey. I recommend both the Valdemar books (classic high fantasy) and the 500 Kingdoms (fairy tale retellings)

More fantasy, but I really like the Nevermoor series by Jessica Townsend, and Amari and the Night Brothers by B.B Alston.

DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE!! these books are under appreciated. I read the entire trilogy (some 18,000 pages) in a weekend. They were so good. And the Strange The Dreamer duology (is that the word??) by the same author, Laini Taylor. They don’t need to be both read, but if you do read them both, you see some awesome connections. 7 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton. (It is also called 7 1/2 deaths, it is the exact same book, just published in different countries.)

Aimee Kaufman she writes sci fi/ fantasy. The Aurora Cycle is a good trilogy. The teenager dialogue can be a little annoying but the plot makes up for it. The illuminea files series is a little hard to read as it is told through a series of documents but the story is good (I recommend listening to the audio books for this series).

Keeper Of The Lost Cities. It's an ongoing book series. There's some (a lot) of violence but it's very very good.

Book of Secrets by Ernest Burnett. You can download it on Amazon. If you are a fan of Harry Potter chances are this will get your broomstick going.

That is so stupid! If it was for English class it mightn't be so bad, but this is a library where you are reading for fun, why should they object to any book you choose?

Same for me, except in 3rd grade I wanted to check out a book that was on the 4th to 6th grade shelves. My mom got them to let me check the book out (it was Paul Brown's "Draw Horses: It's Fun and It's Easy"), and when they saw how much I loved it I got it for Christmas that year.
