As upsetting as it is, there always was and there always will be ignorant people among us. And to make matters worse, they are often the ones who speak the loudest, spewing misinformation left, right, and center.
Nowadays, you don’t even have to be loud to reach a vast audience. Many people turn to the internet to share their nonsensical, sometimes evil, or simply foolish messages. But their means can be used against them.
Take the ‘Not How Girls Work’ community on Reddit, for example. Shedding light on posts misogynists upload online, they use the power of the internet to shame their lack of knowledge regarding women and their outdated or plain cruel views towards them. In their own words, the community is “a place to laugh at all those clueless to how girls work,” and so laugh we will. I have many platonic female friends (and am happily married) but, one night, one of them drunkenly confessed that she loved me. We're still friends (& she's a good friend of my wife) but it changed the way I saw her from that moment on and I err on the side of caution e.g. If we're all in the same bar, I'll go out of my way to make plenty of public displays of affection towards my wife just to make the point to her that it's never ever going to happen.

Yup. I was devastated when my best friend of 12 years dropped me like a hot potato the second my now husband n I got serious. He told my other best friend that since there looks to me no chance for him n I to get together, he doesn’t see the point in us being friends. He confessed his feelings to me after 6 months of us being friends. We talked about it. I told him that I don’t see us ever dating but that he’s one of the most important ppl in my life n I wanted to keep it that way. We moved on.or so I thought… He dated. I dated. It never came up again n never seemed to be a problem. At leash to me. Until I got a serious bf. This is not true. It is true that girls are rewarded for girly activities and sometimes punished for engaging in activities for which boys are rewarded. I understand. But I will attest to the fact, under oath, that as a man, I have definitely been or are too young for things. And I am already now or will eventually be too old for things. And, the too old part, at 55 y/o is pretty lengthy, especially because of numerous OTJI's. Breaking, Barring, Boxing, and Bouncing just being a few of things that I am to old for now.

I do most of the housework, not because I expect to be rewarded, but because my schedule gives me more time to do so. But, that being said, if I do something out of the norm, say like organize her closets, (yes plural, shoes and purses do need their space), or cut down trees, building a fence, stopping world domination, etc., (these are on the same scale as organizing her closets), then I do expect a reward... a nice dinner out, because I will be too busy or tired, or both, to cook.

The last one was so large we wouldnt come out, I had to get a towel and gently pull to help. He was also very clumsy, would walk straight into everything, fall over for no reason, just a doofus. Well since I delivered him, and he was awesome, I kept this giant wonderful cat. Named him Stimpy. I wan't allergic to him for some reason. Girls don’t mature faster. We were forced to by the people around us because there was no other option. When I was 9 or 10, I was left alone in the pool with the neighbours kids. They were about 3 and 5 at the time, and the most they could swim was doggy paddle. The younger one kept trying to jump away from the edges (he didn’t have any sort of floaties, so if he did he’d drown), but the older one kept distracting me. I’d been in the pool for about three hours already after a long day at school, and I was exhausted. People think that girls are so much more mature, but I cried for hours after that. The kicker: the oldest kid’s now the age I was then, and I can’t imagine his parents making him do what they made me do.

Where I'm from in the US, the term "doctor" is used for MDs, DOs, and NPs (though technically they might not hold a doctorate). If someone has a doctorate outside the medical field, they will say they're a "doctor of physics" or introduce themselves as "Doctor Sarah Belt." If a flight attendant asks for "a doctor on board", the joke is the history professor responds, but that's not what people actually expect.

I said programmer and he mansplained to me that I wasn’t a programmer, didn’t I mean I was a data entry clerk? Not surprised. I introduce myself as a vet, which turns into "oh, like a vet tech?" "No, a veterinarian" "like a real veterinarian?" It's a bit surprising. I know media tends to portray vets as some kindly older white gentleman or a hot young guy, not a middle aged woman. However, graduating classes from vet school tend to mostly female so it's jarring to be in that environment and then run into general public preconceptions (US and Canada). Also, almost without fail, if I introduce myself as"Dr. Jane" and a man doesn't like my treatment plan it turns into "Look here Jane, I think we should..."

The sad thing is there ARE systemic issues and biases that effect people in Appalachia—generational poverty, underfunded public education, elected officials who care more about big coal than their constituents, etc. He’s right that there has never been a true meritocracy, the children of rich people can succeed so much easier than the rest of us. A handful of people from a disadvantaged community going to college is good but it won’t fix the bigger issues alone. The problem here is that posters like this will fall for lies that blame immigrants, black people and “slutty” women instead of working WITH women and people of color to make the world better for everyone.

I'm from Appalachia and earned a doctorate from a tier one university. I was told within weeks of starting my bachelor's program that I needed to get rid of my accent as I would be seen as inferior. But your post is spot on. I look back and see these as glaring issues. I was 2nd in my highschool class and so very close to 1st. It was easy to hear people encouraging me to go to college but almost impossible to find funding for my undergrad degree. I'm the only doctor in an extensive family system because of all of the above. My mom is crazy smart but in the 60s, she was told she wasn't smart enough to go to college. So she never did.

I work in international transports, and find it very useful when people have Mrs./Mr./Ms. in their email signatures. Quite a few names from Asia or Africa can be hard to know if they are male or female (and our names might also be difficult for them). It's easier to talk ABOUT someone if you know whether to use He or She. It can be very cumbersome to use their name all the time.
Despite having come a long way regarding gender equality, we have clearly not reached the final stop yet. It’s also pretty evident that in order to do so, we will need to jump over quite a few hurdles and deal with quite a few misogynists spewing disgusting comments or incorrect information both in real life and online. And if you ever need a reminder of just how incorrect some people can be, come back to the ‘Not How Girls Work’ subreddit and you will most definitely find one that demonstrates exactly why misogynistic views are and should be laughed at.

I had a miscarriage, I went to the doctor 5 weeks later and he was amazed that I was pregnant again as that wasn't possible (it was!), so I don't think even a super fertile woman could get in more than 8 abortions a year. I'm also sure that has never happened.

I recognize some of those, there is Andrea Botez (currently over 1800 FIDE rating, which is pro-circuit level. Though more famous as a social media personality) and her sister Alexndra (over 2000 FIDE rating, though she has the title of Chess Master because she used to be over 2100, and she has a certain amount of time to get back over 2100 to keep her title). I recognize Grandmaster Jennifer Yu (who became a grandmaster at 16 in 2018, though she hasnt won a title since her 2022 USA women's championship, but has a huge social media presence and lots of brand deals). I think I preferred life prior to social media when I didn't know what men thought. I can't think that any of this does any good for male/female relations. Whilst I realize there are many good men around, often times men will flap their faces like this on social media and I never see other men calling them out.
