I like the way they use reading to reduce the sentences of the prisoners with an activity that can help them in the long run. (The reading, not necessarily the book report writing.)

Makes sense that they do the book report writing though, it's to prove they really did read the book and didn't just sit staring at pages. I definitely would have tried to cheat if it lowered my sentence that much.

Yes for crimes like drug dealing or thief. But violent crimes like pedophilia, murder or rape should never have a shorter sentence.

I mean, if you're put away for life, the sentence is life. Where I live, sentences are notoriously long though also frequently cut short due to overcrowding. I'd rather have people getting out early because they're working on improving themselves rather than just that their number came up. If you're serving 20 years for murder, you'd need to write 913 reports to get your sentence cut in half. That's a large ask. I'd have to believe someone who devotes themselves to that grows as a person.

In America every time someone tries to enact any sort of similar positive system, prison officials pull out every possible trick, legal or illegal, to sabotage it. This according to my dad who was hired to help with just such a program. He said the level of hostility from the prison people to the program was horrendous and they eventually succeeded in killing it.

Well, it's not that simple. There were at least two projects to actually shorten sentences by reading. The prisoner had a list of books and was limited to one book a month in exchange for two or three days off their sentence. However, those were projects on two different states. The country however has a law from 2011 or 2012 that shortens sentences by one day every twelve hours the prisoner spends studying. The prisoner has to apply to be eligible for this and be approved by a judge. So... It is a thing here, just not as simple.

That's not a bad idea. It keeps their minds active and they can learn a lot from reading so they're better prepared to find jobs when they get out. And it might help them stay out of prison gangs.

Nice. I can read a 400 page book in a few hours, somehow I just need to kind of cross-read the page and my mind captures the entire story. Don't ask me how it works, never had it checked out, but it's really handy. I also remember the layout of a certain page and memorized my latin vocabulary as a "picture" of the page rather than learning the meaning of the actual word (pardon my english, it's not my native language)

This is really cool. Prison is supposed to reform people, and change them, but too often it becomes torture and just something to try and survive. Reading can legitimately change one's perspective and life and so this is really amazing.

Well, although it's true, it's also necessary to remember that Brazil is one of the most incarcerated countries in the world (more than 800 thousand people, 30% of wich are still waiting for the trial). Also, the prisons in Brazil have really bad structure, and are basically ruled by the militias and organized crime. They also have a really bad recidivism rate.

Every fact we stumble across on social media has to be taken with a pinch of salt, so that's why we must fact check it. You see, whether it's COVID-19, climate change or migration — fake news spreads six times faster on social media than facts. Those pieces of disinformation, known as fake news, are harmful. They are partially or often completely false and deliberately disseminated to influence political views or generate as many clicks as possible.

The danger of fake news is the fact that to an untrained eye, the average internet user, it’s very difficult if not impossible to separate it from credible information. To find out how exactly we can separate true facts from false information, Bored Panda spoke with Daniel Markuson, the cybersecurity expert at NordVPN, who shared some very useful tips and insights.

While there is no foolproof method to separate truth from misinformation, a general rule of thumb is to check the source’s credibility, Daniel said. “This particularly applies to social media platforms because they are optimized to increase engagement and lack appropriate gatekeeping features that filter out misinformation.”

“It is also important to weigh the claims against other sources. If a publication makes monumental claims that are exclusive to that platform, do not take them at face value,” he added.

When it comes to determining if the news source is credible, Daniel said that sometimes unreliable news sources impersonate well-known ones by misspelling their names in the URL. “Similarly, they might use unconventional domain extensions instead of the usual “.com” or “.org.” In general, make sure that your news comes from established, well-known sources. These types of outlets get information directly from primary sources and must uphold their reputation.”

If you’re still not sure, Daniel suggests looking into the author, researching them, and making sure their credibility is up to par. “It is also important to weigh our own perception and not let our biases skew our understanding of events. Seek out differing opinions and try not to associate facts with ideological dogma.”

I’ve never seen this picture and I’ve got to say, this is F***ing scary as s***. Like, there is absolutely no question as to this lion’s intention and it really strikes me that humans can read faces of different species so well; and also that the exact same expression can be read on the face of a human. That’s probably part of why I found it so scary. It reminded me of a human. “Here’s Johny!”

When asked about the reasons why fake news has become so widespread, the cybersecurity expert said that it’s “due to factors that concern both the content of the messages and the technological foundation of platforms on which the news is proliferated.”

“Fake news is usually related to current affairs and makes remarkable, emotion-inducing claims. This, combined with the fact that social media platforms collect data on what kind of posts users spend the most time on and feed them content with similar characteristics, provides the perfect conditions for the spread of misinformation,” Daniel concluded.

During a war his father took 2 year old him and his brother to the forest after a bomb killed the rest of his family. Fearing that the war wasnt over they built a shelter and stayed there for 41 years. When an explorer found him and exposed him to the outside world he simply went back to the forest inspite of the endless opportunities. EDIT: i may have phrased the last sentence wrong. I forgot to add that we should learn something from him

Is it me or is it that only the richest people seem to get free stuff. I mean, it seems that they could afford a box of chicken nuggets.

Most of the riches of the British royal family are loot and plunder from other people’s countries.

Like my retriever girl. I am sure that if you would leave her 25kg bag of food open she would eat it all and then die

What kind of a bug? Because when I try going on youtube on my xbox, sometimes the first icon works, but sometimes it crashes. But then I try accessing youtube by going in "other apps" and then it works fine.

This could be true, but the main reason is because the machines are hard to clean and can take a few hours to do so, they just say they're broken as an excuse.

As a German I can say, that it is not common. Ususally bride and groom spend the nights apart or at least prepare separately on the special day

Untrue. Our males have been becoming less and less big compared to females since the time that we split from chimpanzees. The sexual dimorphism of our species is much smaller than previous humans and smaller than chimpanzees and other mammals. This is done by sexual selection and occurs in species that are more social, less violent and whose males tend to cooperate in child rearing. In that case females prefer males that are more "feminine" looking, opposed to violent species where the males do not help with the offspring (like gorillas) where males are much bigger than females. Primitive humans were not huge brutes that needed to defend their females from other males. They cooperated with the females, who could also defend themselves.
