Every millennial seems to look back at the 90s with extreme fondness, sometimes bordering on obsession. Who can fault them? It was a wonderful time, with constant new tech innovations, lots of outdoor activities, and entertainment in its golden age.

That’s why one man, Kiko Hermosillo, started an Instagram page called ‘90skidsdays’ that celebrates the past and helps people relive the millennial memories they might have forgotten. His page has over 203K followers for a reason, and that’s because people love reliving the 90s, which you can also do now by checking out the list below.

I grew up with the 60s version. The 90s version came out when I was 9, but I never bothered with it.

It isn’t just that people miss the past; it’s that they yearn for a simpler time when things didn’t feel so fast-paced and chaotic. That’s exactly what the 90s felt like to most folks, and they may even be romanticizing their experiences.

According to Daniel Miessler, a cybersecurity and AI engineer, millennials often feel nostalgic for how much creativity and self-expression was encouraged when they were younger. They might also miss their childhoods, when the focus was on more quality time rather than people constantly being captivated by their screens.

...for the last time, and neither of you knew.

An interesting thing about the 90s was that the culture seemed strongly focused on rising environmentalism and eco-consciousness. People tried their best to save the planet and swapped many commercial and materialistic possessions to go green. This was also when grunge and alternative fashion began taking society by storm.

It’s clear that people were inspired to believe that standing out, being bold, and being vocal mattered more than fitting in. This feeling was probably amplified by the emergence of the Internet and social media spaces where people could post about themselves and their thoughts.

When people think of the past in a slightly bittersweet way, it is called nostalgia, and researchers have found that this experience can stabilize mood when the present feels chaotic or unstable. Researchers have also observed that this sentimental longing for past events may stem from sadness or loneliness, but can be converted into stronger feelings of well-being.

Although nostalgia draws on the past, it is ultimately future-oriented, as it can motivate a person’s emotional states, behaviors, and even goals by making them want to be better and try harder to make their previous self proud.

I loved this show. I especially loved the stupid color+animal team names (like the Orange Iguanas and the Red Jaguars.)

Recalling the past can be quite a lot of fun because it brings to mind so many interesting memories. Murray Blehart, a self-proclaimed 21st-century philosopher, explains that idealizing bygone days can bring positivity, as long as you don’t get carried away.

People often feel gratitude and joy when thinking about their past, but if they aren’t self-aware, they might put those moments on a pedestal while ignoring their present. This can do more harm than good by making folks feel stressed and unhappy.

Nostalgia isn’t just a passing pleasant feeling; according to Medical News Today, it can actually cause folks distress and make them feel depressed if they believe their past was better than their present. This kind of unrealistic yearning could harm a person’s mental health if they keep repeating the nostalgic cycle.

Research also suggests that people who recall unpleasant memories tend to have more negative thoughts afterward. Some individuals also have a tendency to ruminate over the past and struggle to let go of what happened, which could cause them anxiety and even more tension.

I still have the shortcut to AIM on my desktop and my Quick Launch toolbar. Obviously the program is long-defunct, but it makes me smile to know the shortcut and icon is still there. My very first screen name, in 1992 when I was 10 years old, was "CCLakota"...

A good way to enjoy nostalgia without getting swept away by it is to practice mindfulness. This technique helps a person notice and focus their awareness on the present moment without judgment or comparison to the past. Then they can enjoy their childhood or other memories without feeling bad about what was and what could have been.

Another good way to stay grounded is to invest in your current relationships, since a healthy social network can greatly boost your mood. Sometimes reminiscing with friends can also help folks feel positively about themselves and their social connections, rather than bringing up any feelings of loneliness.

So how exactly do people experience nostalgia? It often seems like a random experience that people can't control, but University of Florida researchers explain that sensory experiences like smells, sounds, and even textures can trigger strong memories.

Whatever brings it about, the five senses are an incredible catalyst for memory recall and can stir up many old memories. This kind of experience, especially when shared with friends, can help bring about shared feelings of remembrance and belonging.

The 90s were full of people buying physical albums, enjoying MTV culture, and engaging with scenes like grunge and hip-hop. For people deeply interested in music then, this can serve as a strong sensory trigger for nostalgia. Songs from people’s adolescence and young adulthood can bring them straight back to the past and make it feel like it all happened just a short while ago.

Experts explain that because music is tied to emotional memories, our neural network activates and feel-good chemicals like dopamine are released. These music-triggered memories are associated with activity in the prefrontal cortex, which lights up when we think of autobiographical memories.

YES. Remember trying to frantically complete an essay-question test in the allotted test time? XD I'd be scribbling so hard that my hand would ache, plus I'm left-handed so I'd always end up smearing the graphite/ink. Also the horror of trying to change an answer on the Scantron forms and finding out that your pencil's eraser is one of THOSE erasers that only makes things worse...

The 90s are considered iconic because of the incredible tech inventions, cultural shifts, and music, which is exactly why people are so nostalgic for it. Of course, constantly ruminating over the past isn’t healthy, but appreciating what used to be and enjoying the present can be the best way to be nostalgic.

Behold (photo in the comment below) the sheet cake my mom got me for my 8th or 9th birthday... yes, it actually says "To my not-so-favorite daughter". I cried when I read it... I had found out that I was adopted when I was 6. My dad was píssed at my mom. I was devastated. My mom tried to pass it off as a "joke". XD It's a good encapsulation of how horrible my mother actually is.

My first car was an '86 Mazda 323 that I used to joke was only 4 years younger than I was. I was 16 and I bought it with my own money. My parents had gotten my sister a brand-new Honda Prelude (coupe) when she turned 16... no new car for me, I had to buy my own with my own money XD I loved that Mazda, though, even though it was definitely a hoopty. I named it Halfbeast (after a character in a video game, Bloody Roar.) My friend bought a Jaguar hood ornament for me as a Christmas gift and we drilled holes in the hood and attached the Jaguar to my mid-80s Mazda XD I loved that car.
