Nobody’s an island—we need other people not only to survive but also to thrive. On top of that, loneliness and isolation have thoroughly negative impacts on our health. So it makes sense that we want and need active social lives and the respect of our peers. That’s why many people copy what others do in order to conform with the crowd and create relationships with others.

However, just because everyone’s doing something doesn’t mean that it’s right for you or even the ethically right thing to do. Reddit user u/avaspark started up an interesting conversation when they asked everyone to share the things that society normalizes, but that they absolutely refuse to do. Scroll down to see what these internet users had to say.

We reached out to the author of the thread, redditor u/avaspark, and they were kind enough to share their thoughts on the topic. You'll find Bored Panda's interview with them below.

Companies realised instead of dpending tons on real ad campaigns, they could throw some freebies toward some random wanna be and they could get their products marketed. Bonus, because all the pesky " paid endorsement" rules dont apply, so most people dont resluse the brand they are pushing has paid them. On the flip side, influencers think, oh i prmote you, you give me free stuff, right ?

Social media influencers are the same thing as an advertisement model you’d see in commercials or printed/online ads. The difference is they decide to promote themselves much more rather than relying on an agent to get them work.

According to the author of the thread, what made them ask the question on Reddit was how out of place they felt in society as a whole. "The thing that inspired me to create the thread was due to how much I feel left out from the society," they told Bored Panda.

The redditor explained their position that even though society has created a "way of living" that's commonly accepted by most people, there will always be some aspects of it that individuals refuse.

"So I began to think if there would be anybody who felt as much left out as I did," they said.

At my old job, we had plenty of paid sick days. The issue was a nasty boss who would give you so much c**p, literally, for not working. I remember one time, I and a few others called out of a stomach virus. She was pissed off because she worked the day before while sick with diarrhea, so why can't us younger women still work. So, she obviously gave it to all of us. Plus. We worked with ELDERLY patients, while she sat in the back in an office and could come and go to the bathroom as she pleased.

Yes. Many companies have changed vacation and sick time to one standard call paid time off (PTO). So, if you use your PTO for being sick, you are cutting into your vacation time or holidays you want off. Had a manager who showed his dedication by coming in sick. Next month most of the management staff had to call in.

It took me literal years to train my employees to call out when they were contagious. If they did come in and were obviously sick, I would send them straight home. Apparently, no boss had ever told them to call out before. (We had unlimited paid sick days, so sending them home did not impact their paycheck.)

I had a job in quick serve where I was forced to run an entire shift from the bathroom. I gave my keys to my top employee and told her to call me if she needed anything. I ended up at urgent care after my shift with an IV for dehydration. I sent a picture to my boss... they didn't care.

I worked a job with an hour commute both ways. I had a bad case of diarrhea, but my boss doubted me and said I "needed" to come in no matter what. I informed him that I would have to get some adult diapers to make it in and I would happily leave the used ones on his desk as proof. For some reason, he didn't "need" me to come in after all. Put in my two week notice the next day.

In the author's opinion, it's precisely because there are some individuals who don't conform to social norms that they're pressured to do so. The more they don't conform, the greater this pressure will probably be.

Meanwhile, Bored Panda was curious to get the OP's thoughts on marriage, something that they mentioned in their post they refuse to accept, even though it's normalized in society.

"From my perspective, some people frown on others who don't want to get married because of the differences in personal opinion and preferences. Some people might think marriage is beneficial, some might not," they said.

I do like marriage even if the benefits are next to nothing these days but the normalization of a $20-$30k wedding in America is ridiculous. My wife and I spent maybe $100-$200 on our wedding. The most expensive thing was her dress at around $800 but her mother paid for that. Granted, not everyone has that option, but, like my wife has said numerous times, it's only a day. What you do with the days, weeks, years and decades after is what counts.

One of the best weddings I ever went to was a small registry office ceremony followed by going back to the brides mothers house, beautiful sunny day, all told to bring drinks not gifts and the food was typical Brit buffet, sandwiches, sausage rolls etc and a silent disco so the neighbours weren’t disturbed too much, I can’t remember have laughed so much that my face hurt, wonderful day

I rented a pavilion at a state park near the playground. That way, the kids could play, we got an outdoor wedding and it was all very lovely. Hired a justice of the peace, too. The more you spend, the higher rate of divorce. That’s what statistics say. Well duh. Who wants to start married life at that price when you could’ve had a down payment on something longer lasting than a single day of luxury?

I got married in my 40s. I was an established professional and a home-owner. I paid for our wedding; we had a nice formal ceremony. Since we needed nothing, we put out the word that $ would be the best present. After totaling all costs of the wedding, against the presents we received, we CAME OUT AHEAD about $300 on our wedding.

I'm semi retired, so I have quite a bit of free time. I do a lot of craft-embroidery, cross stitch, needle felting and wet felting. As soon as I mention hobbies, the reaction from so many people is 'you should sell it!" and then tell me about renting stalls at craft fairs and farmers markets, or selling online. I do it because I enjoy it and its relaxing. I'm pretty good (except wet felting, that's a relatively new one so I'm still learning), so I've given things away as presents or donated items for charity auctions, but I'm not in it to make money, I don't want to sell it. I don't want to hustle at a market stall, I just want to play in my craft room and see what appears.

You should sell it! Away from friends and family though! I am 60 now...back in my early 20's I was into painting the backs of jean jackets, doing glass etching on car windows, and doing 4x4 foot recreations of album covers with oil paint. Oh yea my friends loved my work...did it for free for them, then friends of friends came along, and of course did it almost for free (expenses for paint I'd charge) BUT then friend of friends of friends.....and I started charging...and my work stopped. BUT my stuff was on request, not just me doing my own thing. Hated when people thought I would put hours of work into something for FREE. Collect up your stash of artwork, then post it on EBAY or something. Cross stitch never had the patience to learn, but there is some beautiful cross stich out there selling for a nice $. Best of luck to you! :)

This is wildly false. It took most of them a lot of hard work, but they generally have had ingenious ideas or the intelligence to make something work when others couldn't. This is especially the case in tech (Gates, Zuckerberg, Jobs, Musk, etc.). Feel free to hate the rich for having more than you, but at least do so honestly.

Interesting fact: according to Forbes.com, 30% of billionaires work 60 hrs/wk, and 30% work more than 60 hrs/wk. Obviously, not all are like Musk, working 85-100 hrs/wk, but most are working far more than the average American. People want to work less hours, be employed by someone else, not climb the ladder but stay on the bottom rung, and still be wealthy. That's just not how it works.

Social disconnection is as bad for your health as smoking 15 cigarettes per day, and many are now worried that there is an epidemic of loneliness in the United States. However, it’s not just people’s physical and mental health that suffers—this social isolation has economic impacts, too.

I think this should have some limits. One thing is liking an actor, painter, comedian, scientist, sportsman,... basically anybody with some skill and wanting to see what this person will do next. But when you get obsessed with this person to the point where you watch their every move, you know where they live, do they live with and what is their shoesize is crazy.

The politician thing is mind blowing to me. They are public servants. Presidents have a huge reach so to some extent I kind of understand, but senators and congressmen? WTF? I don't get all giddy because I have county recorder Gary doing the city books. Personally I think the only reason I know most of these folks names is they are acting despicably. They are famous because they deserve to be publicly horsewhipped.

Exactly. If you don’t give AF (which I don’t blame you bc I don’t give AF) then just don’t be on social. I’m not. And this is exactly why. I don’t want to see your pics. They are for you, really. Not for me. I don’t care. If you text me them I have to pretend to care. Maybe I actually truly like a pic you send me once in a blue moon. But I don’t need to see your meals your animals. Your kids. Yourself. Frequently without anything of importance in it. If you shaved half your head off, yes send it to me. If your dog just did a triple flip in the air, sure I wanna see it (once).

But this also mean that you can’t care when no one else cares about your food. I take pics of my food too. Bc I like to. I keep it. On my Phone. It pretty much goes no where bc I’m not on social. If I made a dish someone told me to make, I may send it to them and say look I made it. Thank you. People can do Whatever they want. Take the pics they like To take. Share what they wanna share. But if you’re someone that doesn’t wanna look at it constantly then that’s when you don’t go On social media then.

TikTok has been proven, time and time again, to collect data and send it to the state-controlled companies in China. Hundreds of millions of people use the app and it’s just an ever-growing resource of potential espionage material for the government. But then again, it’s likely that almost all social media does the same thing.

Because it exists for China’s version of the CIA to collect data on foreign citizens. This is why both of the last two presidential administrations have had the US government look into it. Had TikTok been a British creation, SIS & GCHQ would have directed the UK government to ban or heavily limit it. It’s in direct violation of several articles of the EU charter. But as a narcissistic social distraction, it has more value to society than personal protections. https://www.vox.com/open-sourced/2019/12/16/21013048/tiktok-china-national-security-investigation

Exactly. It is a highly intrusive data gathering tool, operated by a part of the Chinese Communist Party. By using TikTok you've agreed to send all your unencrypted data to China. Including data from other apps and from your device even if you're not using TikTok

For example, Forbes points out that disconnection costs businesses $154 billion per year due to productivity loss. So there are both humanitarian and utilitarian reasons to encourage people to connect with others and develop deep, meaningful relationships.

However, it’s important to find balance in your connections with others. If you simply copy everything that your social circle does—from values and attitudes to style, body language, and life choices—you might feel like you’re losing your sense of self.

Meanwhile, they probably beat their own kids just the same. Indoctrination just leads to mental health problems later in life, and anyway, kids naturally develop an aversion to anything pushed upon them against their will. If they will be religious, let it happen naturally. It is a personal choice, and your kids should not have to think and live exactly like you do. Leave them be.

This depends a lot on where you live but religion is never a simple matter. In the US bible belt, they may see atheists as ignorant people who are too stupid to accept big Jeepers as their Lord and saviour. In Northern Europe, we see religious people as fools who believe in fairy tales. I pity the fools.

It was drilled into me in 8th grade to always proof read before turning something in. I just can't break that habit. It's been a long time since school but, I always try to get the commas correct. Anymore, I just put them in where I think they should go. I can't stand those run on sentences, they can change the whole meaning sometimes. At least use periods people. Trying to read something with no periods just drives me nuts.

The only time I really use improper spelling, or shortened word/phrases (like NGL, LOL, or SMH) is when communicating with my friends and family, and sometimes texting my co-workers. I have this force of habit where I try to type things out with proper punctuation or spelling in general discussions, probably because I reply to emails most of the day.

I'm mixed race and when I was at primary and secondary school in the 80s and 90s, I would get bullied relentlessly for having big lips and for not having eyebrows that had been tweezed to within an inch of their lives, I was only one of three brown people at my school. Now it seems that big lips are a thing and some women pay a lot of money to have lip fillers. I wish I knew that would be the case when I was a child, it might've helped to make me feel less s****y about it. Maybe not though, I don't know.

I don't have a problem with this; if that is how a person truly sees themselves or wants to play in a healthy way, it is their body. I might cringe sometimes as it isn't something I would do or even be attracted to but I always find it interesting how they got there.

You can tell the ones who like the look they shoot for, and accept them. I mean the ones who are overly competitive socially, and trying to leverage their appearance rather than being a better friend or romantic partner. They end up with someone who mistakes them for who they pretended to be, since a fake personality often gets involved too.

Being an individual with your own particular set of values, opinions, dreams, and ambitions is nothing to sneer at. It’s pleasant to be part of a collective and we strive for this. But at the same time, every human being is more than just the community they belong to.

You should live with the courage to stand up for what you truly believe in, instead of fearing that you might become an outcast if you go against the grain. You shouldn’t find yourself in a position where you shut off your critical thinking just because it’s easier to follow everyone else’s expectations.

I have naturally long eyelashes but they get to be a pain in the bum because I wear glasses. The worst is when they curl under and stab me in the eye. Contact lenses? Tried that and I’m sure my screams could be heard in outer space.

I see these as potentially dangerous. Long nails can hurt others and yourself by being in your way or getting cut on things. And long eyelashes is almost asking for something to scratch or infect your eyes.

I love painted nails but I hate those long artificial things. I work in daycare ansehen some colleagues have those. Like you have to change diapers (and wear gloves while doing so and no, gloves arent optional) and carry kids around, I seriously get how they do it.

There's a difference between buying something you need, that serves a legitimate purpose in your life, and buying stuff that you don't need, just because you want a shiny new PoS with no regard to the consequences of your short sighted entitled actions. Like all the people that prop up the "fast fashion" trashtailers, the people that upgrade their gadgets every 6-12 months, the people who replace easily repairable or cosmetically imperfect items with new ones and toss the old thing in the trash. The planet is in such dire straights, because no one can acknowledge the fact that, as they blame everything on "corporations", those corporations can only do their damage because of the $hitty, thoughtless actions of the masses.

When my husband and I discussed for 5 hours what we wanted from the relationship (prior to starting one), my husband said I needed to let him know one week in advance if I felt like cheating on him. I said the same about wanting to smack me. We both came from those behaviors from partners and didn't want a repeat. Neither of us ever used the advanced notice. We've been together 32+ years and started as almost strangers.

Nothing. It sucks when it’s not forthright. And one is clear they are dating for a potential relationship and the other is just looking for hookups but won’t say it bc they don’t want to ruin their chances of getting laid and will just be done with this other person once they get the prize. That’s when hookup culture is a problem. Just be honest there are plenty of people that want to just hookup. You don’t need to trick people looking for a relationship.

I think it's personalized preference. I work 2 jobs and don't have a vehicle due to a foot injury I had years ago so I can't physically drive. So getting around isn't always easy. SO for me, it's easier to order most things online. I have not had any issues ordering from Amazon. I look at what I want, pick which of those items is best price, quality, user rating, purchase then use. Mostly I'll buy things like cologne, clothes, or various household items. It's a means to getting what I need so I use it.

Depends. I'm a once or twice a year Amazon user. It's for things I can't find and/or don't have time to look for and absolutely need without delay. That said, I much prefer going to the store. And, there will forever and always be a list of items I refuse to buy online: * vehicles * shoes (because of different fits) * clothes (one company's medium isn't going to fit the same as another company) * perishable food or canned food

I bought several big ticket items from there, same quality and price as anywhere else, then 5% back with my card. Saved hundreds. No worse for society than the alternatives of WalMart or Best Buy. I agree a lot of the little cheap c**p is not worth it.

When I was an Internal Auditor, the minimum hours were 60 and it was salaried. Even though we would travel all week and worked over the 60 hours minimum, we were expected to show up on Friday if we were not travelling. Sucked big time. Edit: changed "you" to "we"

As much as I hear more than 40 hrs is something to be avoided, I supported the family (wife stayed home) by working 7 day weeks (2x Sunday). Sucks, but it worked. Thankfully I had enough seniority to catch most sporting events daughters were in.

If you're an hourly worker, that's illegal. Hourly workers are being paid for their labor. If you're a salaried employee, you're being paid to achieve a goal, to meet a deadline, provide a service. Sometimes, that will work in your favor, sometimes it won't.

Wearing makeup to work, I used to because I felt like I had to. The transition got me comments that I look tired and/or sick, but now I throw on mascara only when I want to 😊 I'm not good at make up and am lazy so I'm glad that women aren't expected to as much anymore 👍

On one morning preparing for work, I remember thinking, "Oh, my under eyes are dark again. I look tired, I should use more concealer." And it hit me. I AM tired. I am working six days a week and I do not get enough sleep and I AM TIRED! Who am I hiding it from? My co-workers who are in the same condition? My boss who should know that we are not getting enough rest?! I started putting on less make up from then on, especially in the eye area. If I am tired and it shows, it shows! I don't have an obligation of pretending I am well and energetic and all chipper when I am not. Live with it.

Good for you! I do wear a little make-up most days but it's just so that, if I catch a glimpse of myself in a mirror in passing, I can trick my brain into believing I'm actually wide awake and ready to play with my kids instead of collapse in a heap!

I've never liked makeup and never worn it regularly - special occasions only. I've never understood (but am not trying to judge) people who won't leave the house without a full face of makeup. It just seems like so much work, and then to spend the whole day feeling like I can't touch my face and having to touch it up repeatedly? Blech. No thanks.

I was the "can't leave the house" girl for years since I was a young teen up until probably 4 years ago. I just got tired of it tbh I decided to concentrate on taking care of my skin instead. It took a while to really be comfortable facing the world "naked" but I love it now. I just wear mascara and chap stick.

Oh, that’s completely different. You enjoy makeup for any reason? Wear it, have fun. It can be a great creative outlet. I’m just glad I started to question the oh-so-common thought that I needed to wear makeup to be seen as acceptable and appropriately dressed for work. Now it’s west when I want to but don’t feel obligated to.

As a woman, I agree. I sometimes choose my path according to the safety of the place and cameras make evil doers think twice. Example: choosing between the stairs and the lift. No cameras in the stairs? I'll get the lift, thank you.

I agree but only with security cameras. I have a real problem with random people filming strangers - if I "hilariously" Fall down some stairs in public I accept that people will see it but I absolutely don't accept that there's a chance it gets filmed and goes viral online.

You have explained people quite well. There’s no pleasing people. Certain people. Most people. Unfortunately. Unfortunately most people want to complain that you’re not anticipating what they wish you were doing in the exact moment they wish you were doing it. Their expectations are a swinging door and you’re supposed to know which way the wind is blowing to suffice them.

The only reason I understand this is because Corporate America sucks. If you can monetize a hobby that you enjoy doing, as the saying goes, it'll never feel like work and you work for yourself instead of some rich fat cat corporation. The problem is the grind one has to go through in order to make a hobby into a steady stream of income, I imagine, could make one lose interest in the hobby.

People are enormously cruel to overweight people and it's just unnecessary. The number of people I've talked to who think bullying overweight people is "good for them" because it'll motivate them to lose weight... JFC. I totally understand why there's a body positivity movement. I don't think it's normalizing obesity; I think it's saying people deserve love and respect regardless of their weight.

Not "normalizing," but accepting and respecting. Some people have health conditions and naturally cannot/have a very hard time losing weight, and they shouldn't be considered "ugly" or have less clothing options or be stereotyped as lazy. They should be treated just as normal as any other human beings. Normalizing would be telling your kids that they can eat however many hamburgers they like because it is okay to be fat. As far as I am concerned, nobody is doing that.

I think the post is referring to the general hostility towards people who innocently suggest that someone should lose some weight and instantly get accused of "fat-shaming." If I advise someone to lose weight, it's because of a sincere concern for their health, not due to a desire to hurt or humiliate them.

Thinking that more than one third of the society being overweight is normal is normalizing obesity. I have amazing + sized friends, love them to bits and never once shamed them. I have a couple of friend who lost a person worth of weight. And they sure as hell are the first ones to consider obesity should not be normalized. Their health vaslty improved, and their self esteem as well.

By calling it "Plus sized" or "Thicc" you are normalizing it. It's overweight. But I completely agree not to shame people who are overweight. That is cruel. Just call it what it is.

This one should be MUCH higher in my opinion. There are far too many people who are delusional in thinking that being obese is okay because of “body positivity.” It’s perfectly fine if you want to feel comfortable and choose to live your life however you want. But don’t you dare try to lie to people and say that it’s healthy. It’s not. It never was and never will be.

I have to put my 2 cents in on this. Yes, it is out of control. On my Late husband's death certificate, it was NUMBER ONE cause of death. Never shamed him, but tried over and over to help him (food, walking, etc) It was always my Christmas/Birthday wish, just to start walking to the corner and back. It can be done. The result of NOT controlling it is devastating!

How about just not butting into someone else's health issues, whatever they may be? There used to be a time when plump was beautiful and skinny meant sickly. Standards of beauty change every century or so. So maybe stop concerning yourselves with other people's bodies and mind your own business.

While I agree that we should not "normalize" obesity, I also think that it is insanely cruel to bully and shame people who are overweight or obese. Obesity and overweight can be compounded by a number of factors from depression to some medications (antidepressants, steroids, and some anti-rejections medications can cause significant weight fluctuations in some people), and I don't think it is fair to bully people when you don't know what they are dealing with.

Let's see.. when I stopped taking my medication I lost so much weight, "looked good" and had people complimenting me. Then I was in the icu and nearly died because, although I knew what I was doing was bad for me, I was more acceptable looking. When I'm fat I'm taking care of myself, but I'm also treated poorly. I guess it's better than being dead, right? Mind your business about people's weight, you have no idea what the situation is.

I feel like people don't realize that vaping IS the same as smoking. it's just flavored. both are inhaling nicotine, and both are bad for you. this is coming from someone who has gotten over a nic addiction from both vaping + smoking cigs. obviously, it's very difficult to quit, but I feel like people need to know that they are just as bad for you.

As a mother of an almost teen girl, I can't agree with this. I will admit, I don't love that it is hard to find cute tops that aren't cropped, but that's more because my child has no interest in wearing them. Otherwise, she often dresses in "adult" clothes. Which may mean a band tee and shorts. Or a flannel hoodie and leggings. Gasp!

Please don't stifle their creativity at a time when they're struggling to figure out who they are. Let them be.

Teenage girls never dressed as anything but grown women before the 'invention' of the teenager in the 1950s - prior to that you went straight from childhood to young adulthood, with girls dressing like mum & boys like dad, it sounds quite grim. If you mean teenage girls dressing in a sexually provocative way, teens don't see it that way, they're experimenting with their identity, copying celebs, and trying desperately to shock parents & other grown-ups. Most of us did it & we all grew out of it.

I must admit I am a bit shocked by the reactions on this one, but I think this might be a cultural difference. If I went shopping in my pyjamas here (Germany), someone would probably call the police to bring me back to the asylum I obviously just escaped from... Just because this is a thing people outside of America simply do not do. There is a lot of controversial discussion at the moment whether sweatpants can be worn in public, but never once have pyjamas entered this discussion.

It depends on the situation. Dropping kids off to school in their pjs, who cares. Work, please dress. In my own situation, I am sick more often than not so in PJs more often at home. I dress in day clothes if shopping or have regular doctor appointments. But, if I have a short window of feeling well enough to pick up a carryout order, knowing I will be back in bed 15 minutes later, I don't bother. Same if I am going to have a procedure done at the doctors that I will be sedated for. With so many pjs that can pass as day clothes these days, I tend to get those so it's not as noticable.

40 "Normal" Things That These People Absolutely Refuse To Do Consumer debt. Don't care if it's electronics, vehicles, or anything else - if I don't have the money to buy it outright, I won't buy it. Edit: to exclude a mortgage Edit 2: the comments have been interesting to see the 2 different schools of thought on the matter. 1 hand is the people who take a similar approach and mention how much of a relief it is to not have debt and the freedom it awards. On the other is people telling me how I'm missing out, foolish, "good luck getting a loan" (which is funny because that's the whole point is to *not* get one), or how I must be privileged because I don't have debt (even though I have a very modest income, I just choose to approach purchases differently and delay them so i can and pay myself the interest over several years to pay cash at the time of purchase vs getting that item now and paying someone else later). It definitely takes a different mindset than society pushes and a lot of financial discipline to maintain that lifestyle, but to me it's worth it. I don't have to stress over small hiccups life throws at me because I'm not burdened by monthly payments.

Why dealing in absolutes? There is a reasonable amount of consumer debt that could make your life much better. While waiting to get the money to buy cash something (a car, a computer, whatever) you’re not enjoying it. You’re not using it to work, to do something else.. The opportunity to use it one year earlier may definitely justify the interests cost. OP obviously doesn’t have a rational educated economic mindset.

Like yours this is just my opinion, but not buying something you don't actually need is not irrational. That goes for unneeded cars, computers, whatevers, too. Consumerism is anything but rational, let alone a "rational educated economic mindset".

There's a middle ground to be had in this. Loans can be necessary for necessities. However, for 'wants', rather than 'needs', save up half of the cost. Then you know you want it enough to spend actual money on it rather than swiping a card. You also know you are able to afford it!

Except you won't be able to get a mortgage without a credit history of three different types of credit, such as car loan, credit cards, and perhaps a small loan for something like a signature loan. If you apply for mortgage with no other credit lines (both open and closed) on your credit bureau they'll laugh you out of the bank.

When someone has repeatedly ignored the boundaries I've set and thoroughly communicated, I'm left with no choice. I'm not going to bother with a person who kicks a hole in my fence, acts surprised when I object, apologizes, then does it again...multiple times. That person clearly does not respect me, therefore I feel no obligation to respect them.

This happened to me with someone I regarded as a friend. She invited my child away with her and her family (the kids were pals) and a couple of weeks before they were due to leave, she stopped all communication. My child was asking if they were still going so I messaged to ask if it was still going ahead (all I needed was a yes or no so that I could tell my child) and nothing. Not a single response. I didn't care so much for me but was angry she let my kid down. To this day, no explanation, no apology, no nothing. Nowt as weird as folk.

Ghosting isn't the same as just cutting communication even if effectively it is the same imo. Ghosting is when you are just dropping communication because you just don't care enough to respond or you're gutless coward who doesn't want to feel bad themself for hurting someone. Cutting communication to protect yourself from verbal and/or physical abuse is not ghosting. If it's something like after meeting someone and afterwards either one doesn't feel motivation to keep in contact it's not ghosting. If you just stop replying without explaining you are not into having follow ups, it's ghosting. If you do explain and the other one continues to send messages and you don't reply after that it's not ghosting. That's how it works in my vocabulary.

@Corvus As a songwriter/visual artist I feel this on such a deep level. AI pictures and song lyrics can be beautiful, but at least for me, they will NEVER replace the real art. Art is made where the heart and mind connect, not computer keys and the internet. There was even a story where a picture won an art contest and then it was found to be AI. The reports said there were "mixed responses," but ultimately, they kept first place. I was like, how can you do that? you literally just typed a few words, not to mention being deceptive that it was AI, and still won? That is something I cannot wrap my head around. AI is not art, AI is a tool.

I'm probably one of AI's staunchest critics on this website, so I'm going to say this. If you use AI for fun, then that's something I find to be okay. If you are using it to try and get clout or for easy money (as I've seen some people use AI for profit), then that is morally wrong. It's a lazy crutch, and those people who do it and proclaim things like "I made *insert subject here* with AI" and proclaim yourself to be an "artist", or are egotistical about it... just know that a computer program did all of this "hard work" for you, and you aren't a true artist. AI is a subject that gets me heated like crazy.

Ha. Exactly. We are built to reproduce. That’s the point of any species. But we are of higher intelligence and get to decide if we want to do so or not. No one should be putting societal pressure on anyone to have children. Plenty of people will have kids. We are not at a point where people need to be convinced of their requirement to have children to keep society going.

The absolute best thing you can do to save the planet is not have kids. To quote Sir David Attenborough: “All our environmental problems become easier to solve with fewer people, and harder – and ultimately impossible – to solve with ever more people.”. The only true solution to a problem is to resolve the root cause of the problem.

There are good times and difficult times to both choices. Its a choice. I'd say that choice is influenced most by how we ourselves were raised. I can totally understand that if you came from a cold, broken, or disconnected family, the drive to create your own won't be great. Wife and I are on opposite sides of the fence. I had a great childhood, she didn't. I wanted kids, she didn't. We did have two and she had some resentment for "making her have kids" (I didn't, she just didn't say no). Today, no resentment and she couldn't love the kids more than she does. Her brother, no kids and is doing just fine without them. Its a choice!

And there are so many children in need of loving adoptive parents already. People who want to raise children should give priority to those children who are already alive in the world, but who are parentless.

Although it's hard to enjoy life when you're poor because you're worried about keeping a roof over your head, whether or not you can afford gas to get to your crappy minimum-wage job, and whether you'll have to eat ramen noodles for dinner again.

I'm confused by the post. You work a normal work week and say you don't earn enough but you don't want to work more? Maybe upgrade your skills and make more for your 40 hours or settle for what you have.

40 "Normal" Things That These People Absolutely Refuse To Do Not being forthcoming on the prenup part of Marriage. I've always felt that when/if I fall in love, I will be with that person for the rest of my life. That said, a prenup goes against my vision of love and romance. Perhaps that's why I'm still single at 42. 🙃

Wanting to be with someone for the rest of your life is the entire point of marriage. But having a prenup is just being realistic. People change. Things happen. Divorce is a thing for a reason. Not at all romantic and neither is banking but one should always be financially responsible lol

A prenup is not "part of marriage". Only about 10% of marriages have prenups. When my wife and I were married, neither of us had any money or property. A prenup would not have made any sense!

100%. My boyfriend and I agreed if we ever get married we'll have a prenup stating anything we had coming into the relationship (money, assets, debt) we take out of the relationship.

Prenups should be by default. The only things that should be split during a divorce are what we're attained together during the marriage. Anyone who disagrees is either out for money from the jump or is entitled.

Consumerism. I will on off be a binge consumerist sometimes, but for the most part I strongly prefer to be a minimalist! The idea of it really helps me find what I really enjoy in life, i find groups of “my people” easily, and I love being connected to my identity significantly more than random things.

Is it though? Some years ago an Australian university wanted to study the effects of porn usage on young adult males, but on order to do so they had to find a control group of non-porn users. The study had to be abandoned because they couldn't find any. True (ish).

I don't see anything wrong with porn as long as it is consensual, it may create unrealistic ideas in the younger generation, but all that is needed is better sex education at school.

Porn would be ok if it showed what sex really is like. But, because of most of the mainstream stuff these days, men think they have to have gigantic schlongs to get a woman and some women think they can't be satisfied unless a man has a gigantic s*****g and can go for hours on end. Yes, better sex ed would help, if not for the parents out there who are ashamed to admit to their kids that sex exists, an no, not all of those parents are religious.

I don't think porn is any more or less normal than it used to be. But, I will say that movies and TV have upped their game. Honestly, I often feel the only difference between a sex scene and porn is the actual act didn't take place (and of course all the pasties and tuckies for privacy sake of actors). They still look the same.

Depending on the culture/region, tattoos can be considered a form of tradition/social norm. I know that Polynesian cultures, like the Samoans or Maori, have tattoos as a big form of their culture. Same thing with Inuit women, or Vikings when they still roamed around. That said, certain tattoo styles in certain parts of the world do have negative connotations, like big Japanese traditional pieces in Japan are usually indicators of people who are members of the yakuza (the Japanese mafia).

Tattoos are a personal choice, and not something for everyone. The stance on tattoos have lightened quite heavily in recent years compared to a few decades ago, and now they are socially more accepted in today's society. As someone with 7 tattoos now, with his most recent one barely a week old, I am glad that they are more accepted, but I'm not gonna shame someone for choosing not to get one.

But some people get tattoos in honour of a dead or sick relative... personally I think that's ok? Even if it's not for that reason, people can do what they want to... I'm not opposed to people getting tattoos, it's a very personal decision that other people shouldn't dictate for you.

There are definitely some people who get them for remembrance of a deceased friend/family member, but there are some people who get tattoos for personal reasons, or that have deeper meanings to them. I have 2 that have deeper meanings to me. A Daruma Doll with one eye coloured in (meaning that no matter how many times I fall, I get back up until I've achieved a dream of mine), and a Ram's head (as my Zodiac sign, and as a symbol of strength and willpower). The rest I got are from some of my favourite series: Fire Emblem, Attack on Titan, God Eater, Mobile Suit Gundam, and just recently, Spider-Man.

On the long list of words which have become functionally useless because lazy people can't be bothered to use them correctly, "antisocial" is right near the top. "Antisocial" and "asocial" mean completely different things, and people who use them interchangeably are contributing to the ongoing diminishing of accurate communication. And "introverted" does not means asocial or shy. It describes a person who needs time alone to mentally and emotionally recharge.
