'No Safe Space' is a comic panel on Instagram that was born with the rise of Covid in March of 2020. I had previously done cartooning for my college newspaper at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ). After graduation, I spent years developing comic strips for newspaper syndication, where I papered my wall with rejection slips. For several years I drew a number of freelance cartoons and caricatures at newspapers and local businesses.

I settled into work as a graphic designer and put comics on the backburner, until Covid hit the US in 2020. Working from home full-time, my daughter asked me to create a comic for Instagram, which I was unfamiliar with at the time. I started posting my panel using my iPad, Apple Pencil, and Procreate app. At first, I posted black and white cartoons, but inserted color on one comic, and like Dorothy seeing MunchkinLand for the first time, I was hooked. My style is simple with bold colors. I was influenced most by Jim Borgman (Zits) and Richard Thompson (Cul de Sac).

The comic mainly makes fun of American pop culture and wokeness. It is sometimes a fine line when ridiculing politicians, celebrities, and fairy tales, but humor is ultimately what matters to me. I grew up with 7 brothers and 2 sisters and I draw each comic thinking if it will amuse them. If it does, you will see it on my Instagram.

I was thinking “those sound more like millennial ninja turtles” and then I realized that millennials are middle aged now 🤯

That's not racism. It's simple stereotypical comedy. I'm Irish growing up in London where rentals had "no blacks, no dogs, no Irish on the window. The Englishman, Scottish man and Irishman jokes were funny. Some things are comedy, some are racist. Know the difference and your life will be better

My goodness some of you are so easily offended. Not all stereotypes types are racist or offensive. I’m Dutch - if there was a Dutch cherub up there, it’d probably have clogs or tulips or stroopwafels or even weed. Would I find any of this offensive? No.

I don’t think this would be something that I would be proud of.

Why not? Tell me which of these is incorrect? Jamaica is known for ganja; Sweden is known for meatballs; Canada is know for hockey; Ireland is know for Guinness; Mexico is known for burritos, and so on. I’m Dutch; if there was a Dutch cherub up there it’d probably be carrying clogs, or tulips, or stroopwafels. Some things are closely associated with a particular country eg the British and tea, the French and baguettes, Australia and kangaroos, and stating that fact isn’t racist or offensive. Not all stereotypes are racist.

What do "puffy lips" have to do with botox? It's NOT a filler. Too much botox makes you dead.
