Okay, anyone who doesn’t enjoy feeding their brain with fresh random facts, raise your hand! I clearly sense a silence behind the laptop, and it’s no wonder that educational social media has become so popular lately.

While wasting much of our lives on the screens, we at least get to learn something useful to pump our brain muscles or get ready for trivia battles. And if you’re one of the facticionados (does this word exist?!), you probably know the Twitter page Uber Facts very well already. With a whopping audience of 13.6 million followers, it’s an ultimate powerhouse for random knowledge nobody knew they needed.

According to the account’s description, it features “the most unimportant things you'll never need to know,” so you get the fun aspect of it. Below, we wrapped up some of the most interesting bits of knowledge shared on the page, so I leave the stage to them!

With educational social media accounts getting more and more popular every day, you start to wonder how many of them are actually legit. After all, no so-called “fact” shared online can be taken as it is, as we have to remind ourselves that fake news spreads six times faster on social media than facts.

Also known as fake news, these pieces of disinformation can even be used as a political tool and weapon, and poses a real danger to those with an untrained eye. Sometimes, however, the information gets so disseminated that you may not even suspect it's faulty.

So to find out how exactly an average Internet user like us can learn to separate true facts from false information, we previously spoke with Daniel Markuson. Markuson is the cybersecurity expert at NordVPN and he shared some very useful tips and insights. Markuson explained that there is no foolproof method to separate truth from misinformation.

But a general rule of thumb is to check the source’s credibility: “This particularly applies to social media platforms because they are optimized to increase engagement and lack appropriate gatekeeping features that filter out misinformation.”

When it comes to determining if the news source is credible, there are some telling signs to look for. It turns out that, often, unreliable news sources impersonate well-known ones by misspelling their names in the URL. “Similarly, they might use unconventional domain extensions instead of the usual “.com” or “.org.” In general, make sure that your news comes from established, well-known sources. These types of outlets get information directly from primary sources and must uphold their reputation.”

But honestly, who would tell their boss they´re getting an abortion? This is a very intimate topic and I am sure for assumption of costs there are some forms to fill and some Becky in accounting that would gossip to others about it. At least that would be something I wouldn´t be willing to risk..

When asked about the reasons why fake news has become so widespread, the cybersecurity expert said that it’s “due to factors that concern both the content of the messages and the technological foundation of platforms on which the news is proliferated.”

“Fake news is usually related to current affairs and makes remarkable, emotion-inducing claims. This, combined with the fact that social media platforms collect data on what kind of posts users spend the most time on and feed them content with similar characteristics, provides the perfect conditions for the spread of misinformation,” Daniel concluded.

For the sake of context, is "mass shooting" defined as more than two people shot in the same incident, or is it a higher number? I'm not being flippant, I want to know the definition as commonly understood (there's a difference in defining murders as spree, mass and serial, and I wanted to know if shootings are the same)

A month, or so go, I had a look at figures available on wikipedia (not a great source, but it's what was available). I looked at school shootings in 2022, and compared them with school shootings across Europe. To reach the same number of school shootings in Europe, you'd have to sum up all of the shootings from 1907 to date (wars excluded). To put it bluntly, there were more deaths in American schools in 6 months than there were in over 100 years in European schools!

I know the population of the US is a massive 66 times greater than the country I live in, but I still find this statistic gut wrenching. My country is still in mourning for an appalling mass shooting here in 2019; prior to that the last was was 1997. It is hard to imagine living in the shadow of this level of shootings but I suppose in a country the size of the US it can still feel remote to individual citizens. And then there are the people who deny it's a problem that needs addressing.

It really doesn't feel remote to individuals. I feel like at this point there's been so many shootings that it's near impossible to not be geographically close to one.

Take the guns or at least provide health care FFS. Oh your child got shot at school, now you have to crowdfund for medical bills or lose your home. What a dumpster fire of a nation.

I hate that the most comments are on how many people constitute a mass shooting, rather then the fact that soo many people have either been hurt or killed by guns in the USA. And that these figures do not count those instances where only one person was shot and hurt or killed, or those instances that were not reported to the police. There is not a civil war happening in the USA but you’d be hard pressed to believe it…

Imagine you are on a boat. The boat strikes a rock, which punctures the hull. It begins to take on water. It is going to sink. Did the water cause the hole in the boat? No. But the last damn thing you need right now is more water. In fact, to solve the problem you must first get rid of all the water. And yet, gun enthusiasts insist that guns are not to blame and we need more of them. Any wonder the United States continues to sink into a sea of fun violence?

It's just sad that no matter how much we holler this. No one does anything about it and just act like it's normal and a part of our way of life now. It just proves how people don't care about humanity. If you're not one of those people than there's no need to be upset with this horrible truth that we are all living. It's directed at those who don't care, think it's normal, and refuse to do what's right to help stop this madness.

I can't. One mass shooting and we threw our gun laws out and drafted new ones.Same for Australia. Politicians sacrificed their careers to pass the aussie guns laws and protect the people. This should not be happening! I don't know ifits the lobbying, but something there is corrupt or broken

The National Inst. of Health considers a shooting a "mass shooting" if it involves four or more deaths or injuries not including the shooter.

MorgothBauglir

2 years ago (edited) DotsCreated by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

The definition of a mass shooting is misleading, however. It's simply defined as 4 people shot in a single incident. That means a group of gangbangers shooting up 4 other gangbangers in a midnight parking lot over a drug deal gone wrong is considered a mass shooting. Still tragic, though.

Mass shootings in the US are becoming the norm and therefore boring. Another one? Yawn… ah well. Pass me the salt, will you? I mean, they don’t intend on doing anything about it, so why should we care? They put themselves in this mess, but are not willing to take responsibility.

A travesty, of course, and it is absolutely necessary to regulate gun sales more and have stricter background checks. But I do not think all guns should be banned.

That is blatantly false. Here's a fact check for you: In 2020, homicide rates were a stunning 40 percent higher in the 25 states that former President Donald Trump won compared to the 25 won by current President Joe Biden. Of the 10 states with the highest 2020 per capita murder rates in America, eight of them not only voted for Trump in 2016 and 2020, they voted Republican in every presidential election this century. I hesitate to use political parties with regard to this issue, because it is a national problem. However, it's not okay for you to blatantly lie about the issue without being challenged. Maybe you're just misinformed.
