The spooky season is upon us and with Halloween right around the corner, you might find yourself craving content that is a bit darker than usual. I was lucky enough to find these horror-style comics by a Taiwanese artist, Ben Chen, that fit the seasonal mood perfectly.

What really stands out about Ben’s comics are the endings—I’ll admit, I was surprised by every one of them. The artist, who posts frequently for his 4.5K Flickr followers, describes his own style as “dark, humorous and full of imagination.”

Before moving on to comics, Ben has created a lot of other illustrations. Even though they still encompassed some darkness, these illustrations were lighter than the horror-style comics. The artist has created many t-shirt illustrations that got popular on Threadless.

In a previous interview with Bored Panda, Ben said: “I love creating art! It’s so much fun! So I will keep drawing until I can't".

Whether he’s drawing a comic or working on an illustration, Ben needs some time to figure out the idea he wants to express to the world. He also does a few sketches and scribbles before he gets down to business and starts drawing for real.

Ben told Bored Panda that it usually takes him 2 to 3 days to finish an illustration and 4 to 5 days to draw a comic. That’s not including the time he spends refining the idea and working out what elements should be in the final pieces.

As for his advice to other illustrators, Ben said: “Try out multiple things to find what fits you and works best for you."

Ben advises artists to “build up the character” they’re drawing and use their own personality for inspiration. According to him, art is also a great way to learn more about yourself. “Then keep having fun and keep passionate through your own works of art,” Ben added.

Horror as a genre seems to be getting more and more popular. According to scientist Coltan Scrivner, "The fact that people were more anxious in 2020 may be one reason why horror films were so popular. For example, horror fans often mention their own anxiety and how horror helps them deal with it. They may be more of an anxious bunch than a fearless bunch." In times like these, comics like the ones Ben creates can be a great escape.

Djinns were NOT Disney-esque creatures. Watch the movie Wishmaster. More like the actual mythos as far as their character
