For this 80’s editorial shoot, I was inspired by the Memphis Art movement and the Vaporwave aesthetic that originated in the late ’70s, early ’80s. I created a set with all the elements that you would find in these retro styles (the Greek column, the first Apple Macintosh, a plant, floppy disks and vinyls) and I custom-made the Memphis-style wallpaper graphics myself. I wanted the model to look like he came out of a Patrick Nagel illustration and yet with the cool vibes of Ryan Gosling in “Drive.” Of course, this whole mood was enhanced by the neon light effect which I created with light gels.
We are seeing signs of the return of retrowave and vaporwave everywhere around us – from music videos to film and fashion – and I wanted to explore it in my photography, hoping that it triggers memories of things long lost in that era. What does it remind you of?
